These films get longer and longer. Now it’s two hours and nineteen minutes. It is impressive that the tension is kept high the whole way through. Only the necessary final scene is tiring, and possibly that the story keeps taking another turn even though the team fails all the way to the final battle. The choreography is okay though I enjoyed more the freedom of thought in John Woo’s sequel. This film marks the complete transition to franchise, without respect of the background story. Now there is no longer a limit to how many movies you can do. And Tom Cruise produces.

De blir längre och längre, de här filmerna. Nu två timmar och nitton minuter. Det är imponerande att spänningen ändå hålls uppe hela vägen. Bara den pliktskyldiga slutscenen känns riktigt tröttsam, och möjligen att storyn tar ytterligare en vändning hela tiden fastän gänget misslyckas hela vägen till slutstriden. Koreografin är okej fast jag njöt mer av John Woo’s tankefrihet i tvåan. Med den här filmen har man tagit steget fullt ut till franchise, utan att ta hänsyn till ramberättelsen. Nu finns det inte längre någon gräns för hur många filmer man kan göra. Och Tom Cruise producerar.

Expectation and hairline alike - the lower the better. A romantic comedy with Steve Carell is not really appealing, but I like this. It’s not exactly The Seventh Seal, but sympathy with the married man is still commendable – and exceptional.

Det är med förväntningar som med hårfäste – ju lägre desto bättre. En romantisk komedi med Steve Carell brukar inte precis väcka sympati, men jag gillar det här. Okej att det inte är sjunde inseglet, men sympati med den gifta mannen är fortfarande lovvärt – och ovanligt.

A legendary film about a few doctors working in different locations with the French branch of Doctors Without Borders. A fairly well-made documentary, although you always want to see more attitude and psychology. What is depicted is not very nice - a new person in the organization is left alone in a hospital deep in the jungle, and there is drinking, smoking and arguing about egos. But it’s honest and insightful. And all the dirt is pretty romantic too! The film is perfect for getting rid of excessively romantic notions of fieldwork. And if you already are cynical – like me - it’s not too bad for inspiration.

En legendarisk film om några läkare som arbetar på olika platser med Läkare utan gränsers Franska gren. Ganska välgjord dokumentär, fast man alltid vill se mer ställningstagande och psykologi såklart. Det som skildras är inte så snyggt – en ny person inom organisationen lämnas ensam på ett sjukhus långt in i djungeln; man dricker och röker och grälar om egon. Men det är ärligt och klarsynt. Och allt det skitiga är ju ganska romantiskt också! Filmen är perfekt för att göra sig av med orimligt romantiska föreställningar om fältarbete. Och om man som jag redan är cynisk är det inte så dumt som inspiration.

The story of Jung and Sabina Spielrein is really interesting. And with the interaction with Freud at the same time, it’s even better. David Cronenberg is a hero for making The Fly and Crash (during a college course in film science we had Scanners for graduation!) which is promising with a history of sexual perversion and psychoanalysis. But unfortunately it’s a bit flat. Keira Knightley is overacting even more than usual as the neurosis patient/lover and the film sways between Jung’s relationship to Freud and to Speilrein. Fassbender is great as usual, but would on the other hand do well to exaggerate a little more in such a screwed story. As a historical presentation, it is very interesting, but the drama doesn’t impress.

Historien om Jung och Sabina Spielrein är ju jätteintressant. Och med förhållandet till Freud på samma gång blir det ju bara bättre. David Cronenberg är en hjälte efter Flugan och Crash (under en delkurs på filmvetenskapen hade vi Scanners som examensfilm!) vilket lovar gott i en historia med perversioner och psykoanalys. Men det faller tyvär lite platt. Keira Knightley spelar över mer än lovligt som neurospatient/älskarinna och filmen stapplar mellan Jungs relation till Freud respektive till Speilrein. Fassbender är skitbra som vanligt, men skulle å andra sidan må bra av att spela över lite mer i en så skruvad berättelse. Som historisk presentation är det jätteintressant, men dramat imponerar inte.

It is dreamy and with acrobatic slapstick. Everything in pastels and a passionate humanist story. Couldn’t really get any better, but here is the proof that it takes more than nice form to make a good movie. A night porter falls for a psychotic woman who both think is a fairy. They rescue refugees, flee the police and dance on the roofs. It’s a little shallow, with slapstick comedy about orphan kids. If the laughter had a serious point, I would have liked it but it actually felt like the dance was more important than the kids. Then again, the dances were really nice.

Det är drömskt och det är akrobatisk slapstick. Enfärgat i pastell och med en passionerat humanistisk berättelse. Kan inte bli bättre egentligen, men här bevisas att det faktiskt behövs mer än form för att göra en bra film. En nattportier faller för en psykotisk kvinna som båda tror är en fé. De räddar flyktingbarn, flyr polisen och dansar på taken. Det blir lite fattigt, med slapstickpoänger om föräldralösa barn. Okej om skrattet fastnar i halsen, men det kändes faktiskt som att dansen var viktigare än barnen. Sen måste man säga att danserna var väldig snygga.

Could it seem any better? Sean Penn as a retired rock star on a revenge tour through the U.S. to understand himself! But it’s a little weird. Without Sean Penn it would probably have been unbearable, now it’s kind of exciting and feels good all the way. The underlying psychological motives might be reasonable, but I must see this film many times to see that. I don’t understand much.

Kan det låta bättre? Sean Penn som pensionerad rockstjärna på hämndturné genom USA för att förstå sig själv! Men det är lite för knasigt. Utan Sean Penn hade det nog blivit outhärdligt, nu blir det lite spännande och känns bra i magen hela vägen. Sen förstår jag inte mycket. De underliggande psykologiska motiven kanske är rimliga, men jag måste se den här filmen flera gånger till för att se det.

“A city hero saves a girl but she is an alien which needs sperms to reproduce. She seduces the city hero who has taken a vow of chastity.” What else could you ask from a movie?

“En beskyddande stadsvandrare räddar en kvinna men hon är en utomjording som behöver sperma för att fortplanta sig. Hon förför hjälten som har tagit ett kyskhetslöfte.” Vad mer kan man begära av en film?

We all know how dangerous corn fields may be (ask Mel Gibson in Signs). In Colombia, that carries another meaning, whith people dying in numbers by the drug wars and end up in piles of corpses in – corn fields. Just addressing the issue is probably the film’s greatest accomplishment, and that should not be underestimated. The corruption of the police and of the mayor and their inability to act are central in the story, but someone who does nothing is quite boring to watch. Though, I really want to give credit to the acting and above all the beautiful and clever photo. And the chamber play next to the pile of corpses is a good thought – but loses intensity.

Vi vet alla hur farliga majsfält kan var (fråga Mel Gibson i Signs). I Colombia får det förstås en extra innebörd, när folk dör som flugor i drogkrig och hamnar i likhögar på – majsfält. Att filmen ens tar upp det här är troligen dess främsta förtjänst, och det skall man verkligen inte underskatta. I storyn är polisens och borgmästarens korruption och handlingsförlamning centralt, men nån som inte gör något är ganska trist att titta på. Sen vill jag verkligen ge eloger för skådespeleriet och framförallt för ett vackert och smart foto. Och kammarspelet invid likhögen är bra tänkt – men tappar intensitet.

Gus van Sant‘s films score fairly high on indie culture, and I was always a bit sceptic about them. Elephant and My Own Private Idaho made me not so eager for Paranoid Park. Until I realized Good Will Hunting and Milk! This one is a bit slow too, about a guy who is very angry with his parents death and cannot handle it. And meets a dying girl… But it is also very beautiful and incredibly cute. And I did cry.

Det är ganska höga kulturpoäng på Gus van Sants filmer, och jag har alltid haft lite svårt för dem. Elephant och På drift mot Idaho gjorde att jag inte var så sugen på Paranoid Park. Tills jag insåg Will Hunting och Milk! Det här är också lite långsamt, om en kille som är jättearg på att hans föräldrar dog och inte kan hantera det. Som träffar en döende tjej… Men det är också väldigt vackert och otroligt gulligt. Och ja, jag grät.

When I recently compared a film with Twelve Monkeys, I got the tip of this film. And indeed, this is a bit like the pilot for Terry Gilliam‘s movie. But even cooler. Only in black and white, and after the introductory flying camera above Orly Airport there’s only still images. It is kind of striking and together with the voice-over gives an evocative sense. It’s not always easy to follow the plot, but on the other side it’s fine to view the movie again – it’s not even half an hour long. In addition, you feel quite intellectual. Thanks for the tip, André Esbjörnson!

När jag nyligen jämförde en film med De tolv apornas armé fick jag tips om den här filmen. Och mycket riktigt är det här lite som piloten till Terry Gilliams film. Fast hårdare. Bara svartvitt, och efter inledningens åkning över flygplatsen Orly är det bara stillbilder. Det är ganska effektfullt och ger en väldigt suggestiv känsla tillsammans med berättarrösten. Det är inte alltid lätt att hänga med i handlingen, men det är å andra sidan helt okej att se filmen igen – den är inte ens en halvtimme lång. Dessutom får man känna sig riktigt intellektuell. Tack för tipset till André Esbjörnson!

Snatch was an informal sequel to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Extract was the lack of ideas after Office Space. But I have never before seen a chronological sequel that is this identical to the previous film as this one. Willem Dafoe disappeared in the first film and there is a similar character – but a gorgeous woman – who doesn’t get as much space. The sidekick is Mexican instead of Italian. You want to curse Duffy because he does exactly the same thing again, but cannot because it’s all still pretty cool. Two cool-as-hell brothers who avenge the murders of a priest in Boston, and bicker. The executions are tastefully hidden with camera angles, city cops are classically stupid and – there’s actually not much nudity. Dafoe’s “There was a fire FIGHT”-scene is included but is of course not half as good, and the final battle is pretty lame. Afterwards, it feels like you’ve seen a short film because you saw this once before. But there’s promise of a third movie - with world domination – and I cannot help looking forward to that.

Men jag har inte förr sett en kronologisk uppföljare som är så identisk med föregångaren som det här. Willem Dafoe försvann i första filmen och man sätter in en likadan karaktär – fast assnygg kvinna - som inte får lika mycket utrymme. Sidekicken är mexikan istället för italienare. Man vill förbanna Duffy för att han gör precis samma sak igen, men kan inte eftersom allt ändå är ganska coolt. Två stenhårda bröder som hämnas mordet på en präst i Boston, och kivas. Avrättningarna är smakfullt dolda med kameravinklar, stadspoliserna är klassiskt korkade och – det är faktiskt inte så mycket naket. Dafoe’s “there was a fire FIGHT”-scen finns med men är naturligtvis inte hälften så snygg och slutstriden är ganska tam. Efteråt känns det som man sett en kortfilm eftersom man sett det här en gång tidigare. Men de lägger upp för en fortsättning – med världsherravälde – och det kan jag kan inte låta bli att se fram emot.

It’s a fascinating thought, that if you just don’t lie or have a hidden agenda, you can go as far as you want to go. The problem is that you also have to say almost nothing. It gets a little artificial in this film, and the story is not exactly credible. But still it’s interesting as an experiment. Peter Sellers was probably perfect for the role as a slightly autistic, mentally retarded man whom everyone takes very seriously simply because of their preconceived ideas. Overall, the acting is really good. The photo is decent though the pace is rather slow in the first half.

Det är en fascinerande tanke, att om man bara inte ljuger eller har en dold agenda så kan man gå hur långt som helst. Problemet är väl att man isåfall också måste säga nästan ingenting. Det blir ganska konstruerat i den här filmen, och storyn är väl inte precis trovärdig. Men ändå spännande som experiment. Peter Sellers var nog perfekt att spela den lätt autistiske ach förståndshandikappade mannen som alla tar på mycket stort allvar bara på grund av sina förutfattade meningar. Överlag är skådespeleriet riktigt bra. Fotot är hyfsat om än tempot är ganska segt i första halvan.

Stephen King, filmed by Joel & Ethan Cohen with a script by Luis Buñuel, that’s a pretty good referentia on David Lynch, I think. Which coincides with my personal favorites, apart from the spooky books. His later films seems really weird – except The Straight Story of course – and while I watched it I thought that Wild at Heart was an exercise of form leading up to the great weird films he made later. But realizing he had already made Eraserhead, Dune and Blue Velvet made me take that back. It’s simply David Lynch.

Stephen King som filmas av Joel & Ethan Cohen med manus av Luis Buñuel, det är ganska bra referentia på David Lynch tror jag. Och bortsett från skräckböckerna så sammanfaller ju det med mina egna favoriter. Hans senare filmer verkar iochförsig himlans knasiga – förutom The Straight Story förstås – och medan jag såg filmen tänkte jag att Wild at Heart var en formövning inför De Stora Märkliga. Men med insikten att han då redan hade Eraserhead, Dune och Blue Velvet bakom sig får jag ta tillbaka det. Det är David Lynch, varken mer eller mindre.

This is really cool. A bunch of disabled men (and a healthy young guy) plays music on more or less ragged guitars and some homemade instruments. They ride around on tricycles because polio took their legs. The music is really good, though you’d like more full songs – it’s a little fragmented. The photo is also enjoyable with dynamic images of nighttime Kinshasa. The band is the center among the disabled and disadvantaged, and different things happen. We watch as the shelter burns down and we travel on a crowded train during Joseph Kabila’s election campaign. These sequences add to the image, but I miss a coherent story or theme. Maybe it’s my bias that creates irrelevant expectations, but at least I would like to see what happened after the tour with the concert in Norway.

Asså det är riktigt coolt. Ett gäng handikappade män (och en frisk kille) lirar musik på mer eller mindre trasiga gitarrer och hemmagjorda instrument. Man åker omkring på trehjulingar eftersom polion tagit benen. Musiken är riktigt bra, fast man skulle vilja höra mer hela låtar - det blir lite fragmentariskt. Fotot är också ganska njutbart med dynamiska bilder från nätterna i Kinshasa. Bandet står i centrum bland handikappade och förfördelade och det händer olika saker. Vi är med när härbärget brinner och vi åker överfullt tåg under Joseph Kabilas valkampanj. De sekvenserna kompletterar bilden, men det framgår ändå ingen sammanhängande berättelse eller röd tråd. Kanske är det mina fördomar som skapar irrelevanta förväntningar, men jag skulle iallafall vilja veta vad som hände efter turnén och konserten i Oslo.

It took me a while to realize how strong the realism is in the film. Not that it isn’t obvious – the film starts off with the protagonist buying a doll for a fuck – but it’s never for shock or to shove it up your nose. On the contrary, we meet the characters in the middle of their daily lives and everything is down to earth. This is probably one of the best told character descriptions I’ve seen. You know the artificial feeling when two persons talk about the main character just for us to know its background. None of that here. Actually, we don’t get to know much at all. A woman bumps into a man in a cafe. They mention personals. She’s got obvious social problems and a son with the father’s parents. The man lives with his mother and doesn’t get anywhere. They apparently share a troubled interest in continuing together, but the background to that interest is evolved parallel to the story and becomes part of the film’s engine. Then there are of course some problems with the film. It’s quite slow. The identification doesn’t work very well, though that’s individual to some extent. Afterwards, it was beautiful and promised a lot, but is a parenthesis in the great cynical world.

Det tog ett tag innan jag insåg hur stark realismen är i filmen. Inte för att det inte är uppenbart – filmen börjar med att huvudpersonen köper en docka för ett skjut – men det handlar aldrig om att chockera eller skriva nåt på näsan. Tvärtom träffar vi karaktärerna mitt i sin vardag och allt känns helt naturligt. Det är en av de snyggast berättade karaktärsbeskrivningar jag sett, tror jag. Ni vet, det där krystade när två bifigurer pratar om huvudpersonen bara för att vi skall få veta dess bakgrund. Inget sånt här. Vi får faktiskt inte veta mycket överhuvudtaget. En kvinna träffar en man på ett café. Man nämner kontaktannonser. Hon har uppenbara sociala problem och en son hos pappans förlädrar, han bor med sin mor och kommer ingen vart. De har tydligen ett motsträvigt intresse av att fortsätta umgås, men bakgrunden till det intresset vecklas ut parallellt med berättelsen och blir en del av själva filmens motor. Flmen har ändå lite problem. Det är ganska långsamt. Identifikationen funkar väl sådär, även om det förstås är personligt. Efteråt var det vackert och lovade mycket, men en parentes i den stora cyniska värden.

For a long time, I was irritated with the stupidity and narrow-mindedness of the American in-laws. And I don’t understand why it took me so long to let go. But when I did, I appreciated Woody Allen’s sarcasm even more. Owen Wilson is in Paris with the fiancé and in-laws and gets nostalgic over the twenties, and gets transferred to that era in some magical way. There, he befriends a lot of writers and artists. Allen cares not for the actual happenings in the film, so neither should you. Of course, there must be love (heterosexual) and the girl of the twenties is in turn nostalgic of la Belle Epoque (turn of the nineteenth century Paris) which is intertextually perfect, as the very concept of Belle Epoque seems to have been an expression of nostalgia. It is beautiful, fun and semi-smart. There is over-acting, postcard-photo and pretty well timed telling. Perfect in the middle class of high culture – not too trite, but not too complicated. In addition very romantic. But Woody Allen can do better, like all of the actors.

Det tog ett tag innan jag kunde släppa att de Amerikanska svärföräldrarna är så förstockade och korkade. Och jag förstår inte varför det tog sån tid att sluta irritera mig över det. Men desto roligare när det släppte och jag kunde uppskatta Woody Allens sarkasm. Owen Wilson är i Paris med fästmö och svärföräldrar och blir nostalgisk över tjugotalet – som han förflyttas till på ett magiskt sätt. Väl i den tiden blir han kompis med en massa konstnärer och författare. Allen bekymrar sig inte för själva handlingen, så det behöver inte du heller göra. Självklart måste det finnas kärlek (heterosexuell) och kvinnan från tjugotalet är i sin tur nostalgisk över la belle époque (sekelskiftet i Paris) vilket är intertextuellt klockrent eftersom själva begreppet belle époque verkar ha varit ett uttryck för nostalgi. Det är vackert, kul och halvsmart med överspel och vykortsfoto. Och ganska rappt berättat. Perfekt i finkulturens mellanklass – inte för banalt, men inte för svårt. Dessutom väldigt romantiskt. Men Woody Allen kan bättre, liksom alla skådisarna.

Four brothers raised by the fists of their alcoholized religious father, making a living as post office robbers in deep Finland. Not the kind of background you need to face the dificulties of life such as love and losses. One of the leathal but lovelable boys sums up the entire movie when he looks back at their childhood: “There should be a law against beating others. People should hug each other more.” The logic of the story is sometimes hard to follow but the film looks professional enough. And it’s all like a prejudgement of Finland – sad and beautifull as hell, without bullshit but with a bone-dry humor.

Fyra bröder som spöats upp snarare än fostrats upp av sin alkoholiserade far, hjälpligt förklädd till laestadian. Inte mycket att falla tillbaka på när de möter kärleken och döden - men de är stenhårda och har orubblig moral. Och livnär sig på postrån i mellersta Finland. En av dessa livsfarliga, älskliga grabbar summerar filmen när de ser tillbaka på sin barndom: ”Det borde finnas en lag mot att slå andra. Folk borde kramas mer.” Även om det inte alltid är så lätt att förstå logiken i storyn jämt så ser det oväntat proffsigt ut och hela filmen känns som en positiv fördom om Finland – sorgligt och jävligt vackert, utan skitsnack men med knastertorr humor.

I had to go right home after the movie and listen to The Smiths or Swedish band Kent. Pictures of abused, struggling mothers always makes me feel bad. Not so much during the film, as it keeps switching to the present life of the children, but when the story settled. It would be interesting to compare mother characters, in for example Swedish, and in Italian films. With films like Sebbe and Beyond you might think it’s simple, but consider Evil, Together and the recent The Crown Jewels and similarities appear. We all struggle to cut the umbilical cord. In this film, we still get some good acting and character development, skillful but insensitive cutting and fine photo – though it’s a bit too easy to tint the seventies in red and pale out the present, to get that genuine nostalgic feeling of the seventies.

Efter filmen var jag tvungen att genast gå hem och lyssna på Kent eller The Smiths. Utsatta, kämpande mödrar får mig alltid att må dåligt. Inte så mycket under filmens gång, eftersom man hela tiden klippte tillbaka till en ramberättelse om barnen i nutid, men när hela storyn smälte in. Det skulle vara roligt att jämföra moderskaraktärer i exempelvis Svensk, och i Italiensk film. Med filmer som Sebbe och Svinalängorna tror man kanske att det är enkelt, men ta med Ondskan, Tillsammans och den nyligt aktuella Kronjuvelerna så framstår likheter. Vi har alla en liten morsgris inom oss. I den här filmen får vi ändå lite bra skådespel och karaktärsutveckling, skicklig men okänslig klippning och helt bra foto – om än det är för enkelt att rödfärga sjuttiotalet och bleka av nutiden för att få den där genuina nostalgiska känslan av sjuttiotal.

Brad Pitt as a mean father getting troubled children. It’s amazing how such a skilled actor can disguise pretty ugly traits by making the character living. And the child-actors are incredibly natural as family members with a spiring agression. Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape isn’t far away – though in a totally different way of course.
But this film wasn’t made to show that a poor father gets poor children. There are dream-like sequences where Sean Penn wanders a moon-like lanscape, and a long episode where artificial and authentic photo picture the destruction of earth – and rebirth. Complete with dinosaurs and all. And the film begins with the mother’s voice telling of the two ways through life – the way of grace and the way of nature or lust.
After watching the movie I looked at its website, where the two ways are illustrated with clips from the film and called the way of the father and the way of the mother. That’s pretty smart – tale and telling as an illustration of different approaches to life. But that was never clear to me during the film. The symbolism was tempting, but I didn’t have the mental stamina to think it through properly.
It is all very beautiful – in photo and as a parabel. But it simply gets to much. Maybe I’ll understand more in a few years.

Brad Pitt som elak farsa med bråkiga barn. Det är lustigt hur riktigt osympatiska drag slätas ut av en skicklig skådespelare som levandegör karaktären. Sen är barnskådespelarna otroligt trovärdiga som familjemedlemmar med groende aggression. Leonardo DiCaprio i Gilbert Grape känns inte långt borta – fast på ett annat sätt förstås.
Men den här filmen gjordes inte bara för att visa att en dålig pappa får dåliga barn. Det finns långa, drömlika sekvenser, bl.a. där Sean Penn vandrar i ett månlikt stenlandskap, och en episod där vi i artificiella och autentiska natur- och rymdbilder ser jordens förmodade undergång och återfödelse. Komplett med dinosaurier och allt. Och hela filmen börjar med moderns röst som berättar om nådens respektive naturens/köttets väg genom livet.
Efter jag sett filmen tittade jag på filmens hemsida där man visar moderns respektive faderns väg, med klipp från filmen. Det var ganska smart, berättelsen och berättandet som illustration av olika förhållningssätt till livet. Men det gick mig nästan helt förbi under filmen. Jag anade en symbolik och det var kittlande, men orkade inte dra det hela vägen.
Det är vackert – i bild och symbolik. Men det blir lite mycket. Kanske förstår jag mer om några år.

Leonard Cohens I’m your man summarizes the movie by the closing titles. I could really stop here, but let me explain a little. Barney shows us true passionate love, and the consequences of that - beeing a regular guy. As usual, there is a build up and an animation of the character before the subject can be handled. That isn’t very well done, really quite schematic. In the beginning, I did consider whether my lack of interest actually was the feeling of the main character. Paul Giamatti is practically in every scene and gives a pretty good show as the tired and desillusionised man with a great passion. Which I like a lot. Barney’s incipient dementia is pretty well played too, but that part of the script is a bit shaky. Checking up some facts had made it more interesting – but that’s easy for me to say. So watch it to be inspired in your blind, passionate love - if you watch it at all.

Till eftertexterna summeras filmen av Leonard Cohens I’m your man. Egentligen kan jag sluta här, men jag skall förklara lite. Barney visar oss den passionerade kärleken, och vad det får för konsekvenser när att man är en vanlig snubbe. Som vanligt krävs uppladdning och karaktärsbeskrivning för att själva ämnet ska kunna avhandlas och det är lite schablonartat och skött med vänsterhanden. Ärligt talat funderade jag på om det var huvudpersonens leda och ointresse som jag kände i början av filmen. Paul Giamatti gör det ganska bra som trött och desillusionerad snubbe med enormt glöd. Och det gillar jag – hög identifikationsfaktor. Den begynnande demensen gör han också ganska bra men där är manuset lite klent – en gnutta inläsning hade gjort det hela mer intressant – men det är lätt för mig att säga. Så se den för att inspireras i din blinda, passionerade kärlek. Om du ser den.

There’s a little determinist in every one of us. It’s so appealing to avoid responsibility for ones mistakes since fate has already decided what will happen. Here, Matt Damon still works pretty hard against the predetermined PLAN and have the help of a humaitarian fate-agent. For love, of course. As well as escapism on a higher level, we get fair action and a pretty good politician character. I’ve only seen a few movies from Philip K. Dick‘s short stories, but they sure fit the screen perfectly with the well-constructed fantasy worlds and very human characters. Perfect for Hollywood, and here the result is very Hollywood – stylish and moderately clever but not very revolutionary.

Vi är alla små determinister. Det är otroligt tilltalande att slippa ansvaret för sina misstag eftersom ödet redan bestämt hur det skall gå. Här arbetar Matt Damon ändå ganska hårt emot den förutbestämda PLANEN och har hjälp av en medmänsklig ödeshandläggare. För kärleken naturligtvis. Dessutom får vi en ganska bra action och en skön politikerkaraktär. Jag har bara sett ett fåtal filmatiseringar av Philip K. Dicks noveller men de gör sig onekligen bra på vita duken med sina genomtänkta hittepåvärldar och väldig mänskliga karaktärer. Perfekt för Hollywood, och här är resultatet väldigt Hollywood – snyggt och lagom smart men inte så revolutionerande.

This is strange. Here’s a fine and complex story of belonging – and of crazy men! It’s well done, good craft. Pretty good acting. But what happened to the script when it went from great idea to confused film? The focus of the film becomes completely the men, and their issues, though the celar subject of the film is the women. What on earth has Afghanistan to do with Norwegian adopted children? Maybe there is a clever connection here, but that eludes me.

Märkligt. En fin och intrikat berättelse om samhörighet – och om knäppa män. Det är bra gjort, bra hantverk. Helt bra spel. Men vad hände med manuset mellan idé och film? Betoningen i filmen hamnar helt och hållet på männen, och deras problem, fast kvinnorna är filmens självklara subjekt. Vad har Afghanistan med norska adoptivfamiljer att göra? Det kanske finns en vacker och smart koppling, men jag fattar det inte.

What to do with such a picture? It’s just so corny and simple. You don’t want to think twice about the plot, and the Jolie character is just too much. But it’s so freakin neat! Colour coordination – almost – in Matrix class, photo – almost – worthy Orson Welles and there’s a freedom of mind  as… well not at all as free as Tim Burton’s, but still. Beeing a nerd of film form I laughed out loud a few times merely from the composition of the picture. Mr Depp is adequately handsome but is actually acting over (!) and Mrs Jolie… does what she shall. In the end you get a while worth of entertainment but also frustration.

Hur skall man värja sig? Det är jättefånigt och banalt till tusen. Storyn har hundra luckor och jag blir förnedrad varje gång fru Joile visar sig. Men det är så in i bänken snyggt. Färgkoordineringen är - nästan – i nivå med Matrix, fotot – nästan - värdigt Orson Welles och lekfullheten – nja okej inte ens nästan som Tim Burton men det är ändå lekfullt. Som formbög skrattade jag högt flera gånger bara av bildkompositionen. Hr Depp är lagom snygg men spelar faktiskt över (!) och fru Jolie…. gör det hon skall. Sammanlagt får man ett par timmars underhållning, men också irritation.

The mother abandons him, he gets in trouble and ends up in jail. So he does anything to avoid the younger brother to end up the same lane. Sure, it’s an emotional story. And exeptionally well played. Well done in most ways, so what do I want? I don’t really know. Maybe a little more complexity, but let’s admit that Romanian drama has it tough keeping up with the flooding of American culture.

En fundering dyker upp: hur mycket skall man bry sig om människors historia? Plötsligt framstår det som skiljelinjen mellan politiska ideologier. Silviu sitter på ungdomsanstalt för brott han begått när hans mamma lämnade honom. Spelar det någon roll? Tja, men man får ändå inte slå ihjäl folk och kidnappa snygga praktikanter. Hur som helst så är det otroligt välspelat och ganska snyggt gjort. Vad skall jag mer begära? Om jag skall gnälla så kanske det krävs större komplexitet, men mest tror jag att rumänska dramer inte har det så lätt med amerikansk kulturimperialism.

Det är nåt med Ben Affleck. Han klarar nog inte att spela riktig badguy. Det är därför han inte funkar som snut. Det finns mycket att invända mot i den här filmen, men jag måste resignera, för jag blev helt blödig. Jag minns inte när jag senast blev så upprörd av en film (The Man Who Sold the World satte mig i existentiell kris och extas, men jag blev inte så upprörd). Den goda viljan, underdogperspektivet, den hyfsat vettiga snuten och inte minst hantverket – det är ganska snyggt; det är mycket som funkar. Så det vore att hyckla att skriva ner den här filmen.

There’s something about Ben Affleck. I don’t think he can do nothing but goodguys. That’s why he doesn’t work as a cop. There’s a lot that doesn’t work in this movie, but I have to resign, cause I got all touchy. I can’t remember the last time I got so upset from a movie (The Man Who Sold the World put me in existetial crisis and exstasis, but I wasn’t as upset). The good will (!), underdog characters, the decent cop and not least the craft – this looks pretty good; there are a lot of things working fine in this movie too. So downtelling it would simply be hypocrisy.
