I did get a nice workout yesterday, but today is technically my first day of this project, so it will be day 1 of 365. To clarify this goal, any intentional physical activity for any amount of time will fulfill #37. While I will strive to get a good workout as often as possible, if all I can get in is 10 minutes of stretching it’s okay – this is just about being intentionally active in some way everyday.

Top floor landing

Much as I pretend to be creative and arty once in a while I don’t actually do very much arty stuff very often. I’m not particularly great at drawing or painting things but it is really relaxing to sit and concentrate on something for a while and see what you come up with. This week I had a suprise trip to the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill on Sea and ended up drawing part of the building – another accidental list thing yey!

The De La Warr Pavilion is a Modernist icon for contemporary art situated a pebble’s throw from the beach in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex.

This magnificent Grade One listed building has welcomed over half a million visitors since re-opening in October 2005 after a major £9 million refurbishment and redevelopment.  As well as being one of this country‘s architectural landmarks, it also has an enviable reputation as home to some of the best contemporary art on the international circuit today, exhibited in two beautifully restored galleries. – De La Warr Pavilion website

We had a wander round their two current exhibitions about architecture before settling down to draw something that caught our eye. I chose to draw the staircase as it is one of the most noticeable features of the building. The staircase winds up through the three floors of the building and has amazing views out to sea.

It was so peaceful sitting at the bottom of the stairwell and concentrating on the different lines. The building combines lots of curves with really angular sections and details and I’m sure my quick sketch doesn’t really do it justice. It seems none of my Art GCSE skills have really stayed with me (I’m not sure I had many to begin with; my teacher told me not to bother applying to art school) but I really enjoyed my accidental drawing session.

We saw it on a super windy day so I imagine it looks even nicer on a gloriously sunny day (though the sea won’t be as impressive, the waves were enormous!) plus they have all sorts of exhibitions and performances on. TPM/—South Carolina’s ethics commission is investigating 37 allegations of lawbreaking by Gov. Mark Sanford in connection with travel and use of campaign funds — charges his lawyer described just last week as “minor, technical matters.”

Sanford is accused of violating ethics laws barring officials from buying high-priced airfare — including on trips to visit his lover in Argentina last year — as well as using state airplanes for personal travel, The State reports.

Sanford’s lawyers told The State that amid the investigation, the governor had added disclosures of flights he took on planes owned by friends and donors, as required by law.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan panel of South Carolina legislators are set to take up impeachment proceedings against Sanford on Tuesday. He has over a year left in his term.

Not that it makes any difference to you but I’m typing this on my new laptop ooooooo. It is purple ooooooooooo. Much as I will miss the 20 minutes or so of faffing about while my old laptop turned on and got up and running I’m excited about my new toy. It is quite dinky so I can blog from anywhere – I’m going mobile!

I’ve had another hectic week (why did I enrol on a course at the start of this? That really would’ve been a much better end of the year thing!) but I managed to accidentally do one thing and (once again!) not quite do another. The best thing this week was definitely having my guest post published, I’ve had loads of visitors here and felt a bit like a teeny tiny minor celebrity!

One thing I have done is lower my expectations slightly about doing list things. Initially I had great plans for getting people involved in loads of things, waiting until I had the perfect drawing/idea/thing before counting it as done but I’ve realised that this means I’ll never get anything done (not that I’m exactly speeding through things at the mo) hence my slightly rubbish sketch (find out more here on Tuesday…)

Uyan dostum, uyan(7)! Işık artık ne doğudan, ne de batıdan yükseliyor… iş başa düştü. Bu birbirine düşmüş iki kutup arasında ne idüğü belirsiz bir köprü olmak ve kuralları şartlar tarafından belirlenen bir senteze zorlanmak kaderimiz olamaz. Sanatçılar, bilim insanları ve düşünce üretenler şartlara göre hareket eden değil, şartları belirleme durumda olanlardır.

Batı kendini 21. yüzyıla taşıyamamıştır. “World Music” adı altındaki ticari çırpınmaları, klasik müzik orkestralarının Hollywood filmlerine, Caz’ın da porno filmlere meze olması, Rock müzik denen hareketin, bülbülün ölmeden önce söylediği son şarkı olduğunun kanıtıdır. Rock öleli çok oluyor. Diğer sanat dallarının da sinemadan başka sığınacak yerleri kalmamıştır. Sinemayı kimin yönettiği de ortada.

Batının felsefesi çökmüştür. Doğudan yakın bir gelecekte zaten bir umudum yok. Olsa olsa Çin’dir yeni kaynaklardan biri. Bu da hoş bir durum, rakibimiz var demek. İşe yarar. (Ya Rusya?)

Sentezci olmak yerine taraf olmak hep daha doğru gelmişti (sentezciliğin de taraf olmak olduğuna yeni uyandım). Benim kişisel örneğimde bu “Rock”çılık anlamına geliyordu. Hem 70′lerde hem de 90′larda Türkiye’deki “Rock” batıdan oldukça farklı, bambaşka anlamlar taşırdı (80′leri atladım acaba niye?). Ama görünen o ki Türk Rock’ı da sentezden kurtulamadı… köprüyüz ya. Yeni bir oluşum yaratmak ve çocuğa bir isim koymak zorundayız. Artık dünyanın bulunduğu noktayı anlamamız, Türkiye ve de özellikle İstanbul gibi bir ortamın bize yüklediği görevden kaçmamamız gerekiyor. Zaten belli isimler daha adı konmamış bile olsa bu yeni yapılanmanın tohumlarını atıyor. Ben elbette ki bunun sadece müzik tarafının detaylarına şahit oluyorum. Eminim ki diğer sanat ve bilim dallarında ve düşünce gerektiren konularda da böyle bir hareketlilik yaşanıyor. Bunun aksini düşünmek bana akılcı gelmiyor. Zira ortada mecburi bir tarihi görev var.

2005 yılı itibariyle Türkiye’de en çok kullanılan silah, inkar ve görmezden gelme silahıdır. Yapılması şart olan bir yığın iş şu an içinde bulunduğumuz bu sisli ortamda yanlış ellere teslim edilmekte, pırıl pırıl bir yığın gence de baskı uygulayarak sırf ticaret uğruna saçma sapan işler yaptırılmaktadır. Ortaya konan eserler de ya sentez tuzağına düşüp gerçek amacına hizmet edememekte ya da artık kısır alışkanlık haline gelmiş bir takım siyasi mücadelelerin oyuncakları olmaktadır. Böylelikle de beslenebileceğimiz kaynaklar yok edilmektedir. Bu durum başka bir yığın konuya da çok benziyor; mesela bazı yer altı kaynaklarımızın kullanılamaması ya da yabancılar tarafından kullanılıyor olması gibi… İlginç bir benzerlik değil mi? Buna direnmeye çalışan, ya yapayalnız ya da çok küçük izole gruplar olarak mücadele veren bir avuç çılgın da çevresine ve kendine güvensizlikle yaklaşmakta, fikir ve yeteneklerinin ancak küçük bir kısmını aktarabilmektedir. Bu çılgınlar, kanalların ne miktar tıkalı olduğunu bilmektedir. Diğer yandan çok daha büyük bir kesim küsmüş olarak kaçma yollarını aramakta, green card ve benzeri tuzaklarla hayaller görmektedir. Ve ikinci kesim için kanal diye bir şey zaten yoktur. 2004 yılında 1.800.000 gencin üniversite sınavına girdiği, 2005′te ise bu sayının 2 milyonu aşmasının beklendiği, bu kadar genç bir Türkiye’nin gençlerine umut aşılayamamasının tarihi faturasını acaba kim ödeyecek? Umut konusunu geçtim… acaba istihdam sorununu ne tip bir kavramsal yapılanmayla çözmeyi planlıyoruz? Avrupa’yı istilayla mı? Hatalar silsilesi… üstelik belki mecburi ama anlamsız hatalar. Işık artık ne doğudan, ne de batıdan yükseliyor. İş hepimizin başına düştü!

Türkiye’de şu anda müzik adına bir şeyler yapıyoruz ama hiç bir aleti üretemiyor, penalarımızı bile dışarıdan satın alıyoruz. Belki bilgisayar programı yazıyoruz ama CPU’larına muhtacız. Resim yapıyoruz ama bilemiyorum boyalar nereden geliyor… Bu örnekler daha da artırılabilir. Ve bunlar demin bahsettiğim sisli ortamın sonuçlarıdır. Zira üretim zincirlerini ikna edebilecek ve “Çin’le yarışamayız” safsatasını yıkabilecek fikirlerin yaratılabilmesinin önündeki engelleri bizzat biz kendimiz kuruyoruz. O fikir havuzudur ki bunu ancak sanatçılar ve bilim insanları oluşturabilirler. Ancak bunun hep böyle gitmeyeceğine dair o kadar çok gösterge var ki… Eğer bu yazıyı bu noktaya kadar sabırla okumuşsanız zaten bu göstergelerden biri de sizsiniz. Çünkü her ne sebeple olursa olsun şu ana kadar ortaya koyduğum tezin ne olduğunu sınamaya çalışıyorsunuz. Burada anlattığım sorunların en azından bir kaç tanesini bizzat yaşadığınıza eminim. Sorunları fark etmek çözüme doğru giden yolda ilk adımdır. Ve bu bir göstergedir.

Ancak bu göstergeleri bu fikir havuzunun varlığını tescil etmekle yükümlü ancak bu konuda zaafı olan geleneksel medyadan net bir şekilde takip edebilmek mümkün değildir. Çünkü o medya da elbette ki tüm bu sisli ortamdan nasibini almış, aynı kafası karışık felsefe içinde mutsuzluğuna ve umutsuzluğuna katlanarak hayatını idame ettirmekte, anlatmaya mecbur kılındıklarını aktarmakta ya da doğudan, batıdan aynı tükenmişlikleri yeniden ve yeniden sıralamakta, geçmiş hayallere methiyeler düzmekle vakit kaybetmektedir. Bir yanda kaynana, diğer yanda da din pazarlayanların arasında sıkışıp kalmış, sanat adına ne varsa batıdan satın alarak ve bunu allayıp pullayıp kara dönüştürenlerin dünyasından bahsediyorum. Ancak burada da (sayıları az bile olsa) belli isimler bir şeylerin yanlış olduğunun farkındadır. Şartlar uygun olduğunda kendilerini gösterecek ve gelişmeye tüm desteklerini vereceklerdir. Şartları uygun kılmak da elbette ki sanatçılar ve bilim insanlarına düşer.

Yeniden söylüyorum; doğu ve batı tükenmişliklerinin savaşını veriyorlar. Bu bir petrol veya toprak savaşı değildir. Bu ancak çökmüş vizyonların kapışmasıdır. Umutsuz insanların hayvani yanlarının ortaya çıkmasıdır. Söyleyecek bir lafı kalmayanın tekme tokat saldırmasıdır. Artık bize beslenebileceğimiz bir fikir ortamı sunmaktan çok uzaklar. Bu fikir ortamını biz yaratmak, geliştirmek zorundayız. Hem tarihi hem de coğrafi olarak bulunduğumuz durum bunu gerektirmektedir. Bunun ayaklarından biri elbette ki müziktir. Sanat insanlık tarihi boyunca bir yandan durumun ne olduğunu saptarken, diğer yandan da geleceğin nasıl olacağına dair yönlendirme işlevi görmüştür. Belki yeni enstrümanlar yapacağız (bunu yapabilenler var biliyorum). Belki nota sistemini yeniden yazacağız (matematikçiler, fizikçiler tanıyorum). Belki de kayıt teknolojisinin yerine yepyeni bir kavram getireceğiz (kafası açık gençler var eminim). Yaratıcı güce mecbur kalacağımız yıllar geliyor. Bundan kaçış yok. Dünyada yapılmış hemen herşeyi yapabilecek teknik altyapı, işgücü ve organizasyon kabiliyeti çok ama çok kısa bir sürede bu topraklara yerleşti. Sıra artık fikir liderliğindedir. Bunun da tek yolu bu güce sahip gençlerin birbirlerini ciddiye almasından, kıskançlıktan uzak ama acımasızca bir eleştiri ortamı kurmalarından ve doğruyu çevrelerine yaymalarından geçer. Türkiye’li ve İstanbul’lu sanatçılar ve bilim insanları üzerlerine dikilmiş milyonlarca gözün artık farkına varmalılar.

Ben bu yazdığım satırların bir öngörü olduğu kanaatindeyim. Bıyık altından gülenler, hayalperest diyenler, konuyu tamamen yanlış anladığımı düşünenler ve de hiç işlerine gelmediğinden dolayı yine aynı taktiği (inkar ve görmezden gelme) uygulayacak olanlar olacaktır. Bu sisli ortamda bu çok doğal. Zaten çoğumuz bu duruma alışığız. Ancak şunu net olarak görmek lazım; bu dediğim değişim hareketi halihazırda mevcuttur ve inkar edilemez örnekleriyle hakim medyaya bile sirayet etmeye başlamıştır. Türkiye’de değişimler hiç bir zaman yavaş olmadı. Bunu bir de dünyanın içinde bulunduğu çıkmaz perspektifiyle değerlendirirsek tarih içindeki yerimiz, önemimiz ve görevimiz çok daha belirgin bir şekilde görünür. Elbette ki görmek ve sorumluluğu almak isteyenler için.

Sonuç olarak soruyorum; dünyanın çivisi çıkmış, onu yerine kim çakacak? Doğu mu, batı mı? Yoksa?

Another plus (I guess) is that I’m actually in this thing. On the stage, saying words, in front of people. This is my first time acting in about three years, so I’m terribly nervous and excited. I’ll be playing two small roles, which is fun for me because I like playing multiple roles whenever I can. I’ve been working hard on my vocals, trying to have distinctly different character voices for both parts. Hopefully I’ll be successful!

We will only have three rehearsals (well, two, really, since one is just for the two noble kinsmen themselves) that last just a few hours each, and then boom! Right to the stage.

This is just a small part of an ongoing series of incredible plays being staged in a somewhat impromptu fashion at Richmond Shakespeare, so please be sure to check out as many as possible. I attended the reading of Cymbeline in the spring and had an absolute blast, and will be stage managing the reading of The Lion in Winter which will be presented this December (more on that when the time comes).

I hope to see a packed house this Tuesday night!

Back in high school, sleepovers were a regular occurrence with my group of friends.  We would usually have them at Lindsay’s house, sometimes at mine or Joan’s to mix things up, and occasionally at Tracy’s house. We would watch movies, eat snacks, and stay up really late (sometimes as late as 3 or 4  in the morning).  While we never drank or did drugs, we did occasionally get into a little trouble.  There are 4 instances  in particular that immediately come to mind:

1) We were spending the night at Lindsay’s house one Halloween and we decided to sneak out of the house and cut down a plastic penguin that hung from a tree, year round, at a house in the neighborhood. We waited until after her parents went to bed, we sneaked out of  the house, and made our way to the house where we successfully cut the penguin down (I still have a scar on my ankle from when I accidentally slipped down the wet hill). However, on our way back home, Lindsay’s dad, who had heard us leave and came looking for us in the car, intercepted us and sent us straight home.  He was pretty mad.

2) Once when we stayed at Tracy’s house, we decided to go TP someone’s house.  I don’t remember how we chose our victim.  As we were finishing our work, I stumbled upon some bags of warm, smelly grass clippings at the end of the driveway.  Jackpot.  After sprinkling them all over the driveway and sidewalks, I shoved a bunch in between the front door and the storm door.  I  finished the job by filling their mailbox, making sure to flip up their mailbox flag before we left.  You’ve got mail!

3) New Year’s 1999 we had a sleepover at my house. If you remember, that was when everyone was panicked over Y2K. Nobody knew what was going to happen, so when the clock struck 12 and the power went out at my house, we all screamed. Turns out it was just my dad playing a joke on us and all was well in the world.  We were feeling antsy after that, so my dad agreed we could all go out and TP the house of my neighbor (and friend of the family) Randy, who lived at the other end of the block.  We set out and, of course, we were giggly.  My dad, who came with us, told us we needed to be quiet or we’d turn around and go home.  We all quieted down, and began our work. What we didn’t know, and soon found out, was that my dad brought a bunch of M80’s (large firecrackers) along.  So, while we were instructed not to make a peep, he started setting them off outside Randy’s house.  The neighbor next door burst out of his house, mistaking the blasts for gunshots.

4) After our last day of Junior year, our catch phrase became “We’re seniors…holy shit!”  We, of course, celebrated with a sleepover (at Joan’s, I think).  At one point in the evening, we decided it would be fun to drive my car on senior circle, a small circular patch of grass in the parking lot that the seniors parked around. (Oddly enough, the school got rid of it during some major renovations to the school and we never got to park around it).  Our new favorite inside joke became “Look, we’re on senior circle!”  Afterward, since that wasn’t enough fun, I drove my car around on the precious Guido Kauls Soccer Field. The event became known as “dandelions” because, when I got home the next morning, I noticed I had grass and dandelions stuck in my front license plate.

Since Andrew was up North hunting this weekend, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to have the girls over to relive one of our favorite activities in high school.  Unfortunately, due to two girls living out of the country and conflicting work schedules, only 3 girls were able to make it last night – Liz, Lindsay, and Natalie.  It was a pretty laid back evening: we ate some snacks, watched YouTube videos, got visited by my dad (in the words of Lindsay, “It wouldn’t be a sleepover without the parents checking in on us”), watched movies (Wallace & Gromit:  A Close Shave and Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone), caught up on each others’ lives, and then went to bed relatively early (around 1:30am).

While it wasn’t a typical sleepover in the sense that everyone slept crammed on the floor in one room (hey, we’re getting old and prefer to sleep on comfy surfaces!), it was still a lot of fun.  It brought back a lot of great memories from high school with a group of wonderful girls who played an influential role in the person I am today.
