Zaraki y Byakuya siguen “cortando” a Yammy a diestra y siniestra…

kisses

I headed east, and uphill, to the Sierras, which in my opinion, are at its best after Labor Day, as the weather stays stable, the crowds disappear, and the colors start to change on the trees.

The first part of the journey was a slog up the I-80 to Truckee, semi-scenic, and well, the weather didn’t quite cooperate, with rain showers most of the way. I don’t like driving the 80, so the highlight was perhaps the hamburger and pie at Ikeda’s in Auburn. I did turn off before Donner Pass and took the old route past Donner Lake, then south into good old South Lake Tahoe via Emerald Bay. This is a funny, but endearing town, mostly sprawl along the 50, full of cheap motels, average dining, and it’s hard to even get to the lake shore. But I lived there for a few months one winter.

Ikeda's, now and forever.

I met my friends Anthony and Karen for coffee the next morning, under clear skies, and caught up on things. Hadn’t seen them in a couple years, but it left me pining for the calm relaxed pace of life in Tahoe, with all the outdoor stuff nearby.

Donner Summit, the old U.S. 40

Lake Tahoe from Kingsbury Grade

I made my slow way to Mammoth Lakes, via the Walker River Canyon, Bridgeport, and Mono Lake. Mono Lake is one bizarre but beautiful body of water, with the shores covered in this alkali chalk-like substance, a strong sulfur smell, and millions of flies swarming at the shore. It’s extraordinary!

Mono County Courthouse, Bridgeport

Mono Lake

The shore of Mono Lake, a white crust and spongy mud

So most of this part of the trip was about hiking, and unlike last year, which was a rainout, I got in plenty of awesome scenery and lots of walking. Here we go:

McLeod Lake, around Mammoth- the trail is short and sweet, just over half a mile each way, so a nice little walk to start my morning. I just about froze camping the night before, and somehow the Thermarest doesn’t make for a comfortable night sleeping. The start of the trail at Horseshoe Lake is perhaps the most interesting section, with elevated CO2 levels leading to an area of grayish, dead trees. Despite having a beach, it’s not advisable to be low to the ground, where the CO2 concentration is nearly 90 %. It’s a reminder of the volcanic origins of the area, in fact Mammoth Lakes sits in the middle of the ancient Long Valley Caldera.

Dead trees, Horseshoe Lake

Pine Lake- I drove south towards Bishop, and turned west on the Pine Creek Canyon Road. This starts in Round Valley, a pretty area of orchards and rangeland, then goes up the very narrow Pine Creek Canyon before reaching a dead end at the pack station and the tungsten mine. Then it was a 4.5 mile hike that climbed steeply out of the canyon, and towards the lake. This is pretty scenic throughout, with nifty striated granite features on the walls of the canyon, and looking eastward, a spectacular view of the canyon and the White Mountains. A nice huffer and puffer to get me back in shape and used to the altitude.

Convict Lake and Mt. Morrison

Pine Creek Canyon and the White Mountains

Tyee Lakes- Hiked this the next day, the trailhead was a short drive up the 168 from Bishop. I was looking for solitude, I definitely got it, since I didn’t run into anybody on the trail. I’d say that it was not as scenic as Pine Lake, but the last lake was in a pretty gorgeous setting, with a small beach to chill out at. And there was some color change in the canyon, with some trees already yellow. 3.8 miles to the last lake.

Tyee Lakes basin

Grüezi aus Zurich, California

Kearsarge Pass and Lakes- I camped just uphill from Independence, got the most spectacular star display, and got an early start on this hike. Also, the temperatures were warm, making it a refreshing and comfortable 60 F at the top of the pass. It’s long, 5.8 miles to the pass, and another mile downhill to the lakes. The trail is very well-graded, but the scenery is outstanding all the way, especially as you finally approach the narrow pass. As I was already pretty tired, the steep hike back up to the pass from the lakes was brutal, and the last two miles felt too long, as you see the parking lot, the cars, and the road and somehow never quite get there! At the end of the day, it was a well-deserved dinner at the improbably located, very French Still Life Cafe in Independence, and a real bed in a motel.

Early to bed, early to rise, camping near Independence

Big Pothole Lake and Onion Valley from Kearsarge Pass

Entering Kings Canyon National Park, Bullfrog Lake

Kearsarge Lakes, pinnacles, and the Great Western Divide

And that was it, 3 days of hiking in a row, 33 miles, around 8000 vertical feet, and fabulous scenery. I think it’s the minimalism of the high Sierra that’s so captivating, just granite, lakes, and deep blue skies. But as a final note, I also visited Manzanar War Relocation Center, now Manzanar National Historic Site, which commemorates one of America’s less magnificent historical episodes. Indeed, beautiful places have their ugly sides.

It was time to head back to L.A., but I always have a hard time pulling myself away from such a nice part of the world. But a few meetings and some work-related stuff brought me back there earlier than I would have wanted to.

Manzanar and Mt. Williamson

Cemetery, Manzanar

I’ve been up most of the side roads off of the 395 leading towards the Sierra crest, and have been up many of the passes. But as always, there’s plenty more to explore, and I shall be back!

The Chestnut-collared Longspur and the Golden-crowned sparrow are found in the Canadian West, inland as well as on the seacoast. They rarely visit the East of the country, they nest respectively in the humid steppes, where the vegetation is dense and tall, and in the peat bogs of the tundra. The Hooded Siskin is a South-American species that nests in the coastal regions and forest edges of Uruguay and eastern Argentina. Not very fearful, it feeds on seeds, berries, insects and grassy plants. As for the Rufous-sided Towhee, its habitat is southern Quebec. Comfortable in dense underbrush, it feeds on berries, weeds, insects and grasses. The length of the Chestnut-collared Longspur is 15 cm, the Golden-crowned sparrow’s length is 18 cm, the Hooded Siskin’s is 12 to 13 cm, and the Rufous-sided Towhee’s length is 19 to 22 cm.

The Black-throated Gray Warbler and the Hermit Warbler are found in the western United States, in conifers forests and shrubbery. The Yellow-rumped Warbler nests throughout Québec and the Maritimes and spends the winter along the south-eastern coast of New Brunswisk and along the south-western coast of Nova Scotia. Found in mixed or conifer forests, it feeds on spruce budworms and small fruits, and drinks sap. The length of the Black-throated Gray Warbler is 13 cm, the Hermit Warbler’s length is 14 cm, and the Yellow-rumped Warbler is 12 to 16 cm in length.

The Glaucous Gull is a Nordic bird of Alaska, the Arctic and the Nouveau-Québec region. Passing through all the regions of Québec and the Maritimes during the migration period, it spends the winter in the Saint Lawrence gulf and estuary, along the Atlantic coastline and in Fundy Bay. Its diet is quite varied, and made up of penguin eggs and fledglings, adult birds, invertebrates, fish, insects and small fruits. A carrion-eater, it clears beaches of carcasses and eats the fæces and placentas of seals. The length of the Glaucous Gull is 66 to 76 cm and its average wingspan is 152 cm.

One place that gets me through the dawg days of summer is the little Ghost Town Get-a-way of Ritter

One place that gets me through the dawg days of summer is the little Ghost Town Get-a-way of Ritter Hot Springs. It’s a little spot where time has literally stood still. A room with a bed in the old hotel will run you $30 per night, or you can simply pitch a tent on the cool green lawn for $11 per night, with the dips in the hot springs and pool included. You can also call ahead and reserve a private cabin, 541-421-3846. To start your little vacation you just slide your dues into a coffee can in the abandoned little store, and maybe even purchase a popsicle or ice for the summer evening.

I fell in love my first trip there last summer. The stars were aligned, and everything was just so divine. I have since realized that you should always sign the Guest Book when you visit a place, that way you can verify that all those fond memories you have created in your mind truly did take place. I was in love with life, in love with my boyfriend at the time, and in love with finding such a little gem tucked away along the Middle Fork of the John Day River. Somewhere in between Long Creek and Ukiah off Hwy 395 you take a left for roughly 10 miles and leave your everyday life and chores behind.

One year later, life is still great, the work seems to have gotten longer, the love life a little sparser, but hey, Ritter Hot Springs is still there! I packed the dogs in the car a few nights ago and drove along the windy roads to this little pet friendly oasis. I stopped at the Thomas Orchards in Kimberly along the way, a destination in itself. Open from 8am to 6pm daily during the summer. You can pick Peaches, Plums, Pears, Nectarines, and Cherries right off the trees, or purchase fresh fruits, preserves, and homemade slices of pie right out of the little country store. The prices at Kimberly are most reasonable, a must stop indeed. http://www.thomasorchards.com/

The swimming pool at Ritter is a great place to grab a complimentary water noodle, lay back and float until the stars come out and twinkle in the summer night sky. If you want a more private and rustic experience, then you simply take a hop over the swinging bridge and meander up the hill to soak in 1 of 4 old tubs. The tubs are built of turquoise painted cement blocks and remind me of old ruins in Greece, and while I have never been to Greece, I image there is a little out of the way place there that looks very similar. At Ritter, there is also a one of a kind shower, which must truly be experienced. You simply step into this little outdoor stall, yank down on this big isolation valve, and let the hot water come pouring down over your head. I doubt there is a shower on this planet that pumps out more gallons per minute of hot water to wash your cares down the drain.

If you are lucky, the owner may share with you a true ghost story or two while you heat up you cup of coffee and breakfast at a picnic table on the lawn or enjoy a soak in the pool. Before you head that way, I should mention, Ritter Hot Springs is open to the public Sunday through Thursday, closed on Fridays & Saturdays. It’s also seasonal, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which makes this place even more of a special get-a-way. Check out: http://www.ritterhotsprings.com. You will also need to pack in your own meals, and my best advice is to pick up some fresh fruit at Kimberly along the way up the John Day!

Country Cupboard Bean Dip

I came up with this little recipe after a recent visit with some friends who brought out all sorts of yummy foods from town. I don’t think I had had bean dip in over a year, and quickly decided I was missing out. Here is what I threw together and gosh darn it if it didn’t taste better than the store bought stuff.

1 can pinto beans, drained

Juice from 1 lime

A couple home grown hot peppers

Fresh Herbs from the Garden: cilantro, basil, mint, etc.

Cupboard Spices: salt, pepper, cayenne, paprika

I think a few cloves of garlic would also make a nice addition. Puree it all together in a food processor. Serve with tortilla chips.

01. Faruk Sabanci & Nurettin Colak – Anatolian Emotions (Myon & Shane 54 Remix) [Addictive Global]
02. Nv & Noy – Ocean Drive
03. Arnej – Dust In The Wind [Coldharbour] [Future Favorite]
04. Sander van Dien – Aurora [In Trance We Trust]
05. Pulser feat. Josie – Undo The Silence (Club Dub) [Maelstrom]
06. Martin Roth & Alex Bartlett – Losing Gravity (Martin Roth Nu-Style Mix)
07. Marcus Schossow – From My Heart [Tone Diary]
08. Cliff Coenraad – Gone South [High Contrast]
09. Rafael Frost – Red (Ferry Corsten Remix) [Flashover]
10. Gareth Emery – Exposure [Garuda]
11. Randy Boyer – Thrust [Ultra]
12. Passive Progressive feat. Rachele Warner – Hide Away (7Skies & Static Blue Remix) [S107]
13. Boom Jinx & Oliver Smith – Sunrise (Van der Vleuten’s Sunset Remix) [Anjunabeats]
14. Cressida – Onyric (Stoneface & Terminal Remix) [Euphonic] [Tune Of The Week]
15. Reverse – Distant Destiny [Vandit Digital]
16. Misja Helsloot pres. Just D – Spreadsheet (Vast Vision Bangin’ Mix)
17. Ronski Speed & Jared Knapp – Encompass [Euphonic]
18. Carlo Resoort – Lifetime (4 Strings Remix) [Liquid]
19. DJ Ton TB – Dream Machine (First State Remix) [In Trance We Trust]
20. Thr3shold & Detune – Shapeshifter (Riot Mix) [A State Of Trance]
21. GTR – Mistral [Five AM] [ASOT Radio Classic]

It’s one thing to decide not to attend the inauguration but it’s another to decide to at

It’s one thing to decide not to attend the inauguration but it’s another to decide to attend. In the back of your mind there are thoughts of something might go wrong where you may MISS THE EVENT!!!!! The story below is horrific as about 3,900 people had to deal with the reality of missing the swearing in – AND THEY HAD TICKETS!!!!!

We say this all the time, especially to our kids – “Stay alert and be Street Smart.” Some have no clue what that means but basically it means watch out for the pitfalls or other issues which stand in the way. While we suffered through some of what these people had to deal with, we went into “street mode” and wound up in our section. The bad thing about these people’s experience is they were in a tunnel, so had no clue what was going on above them. We can’t figure out why they arrived at 5am, 6am, 7am and after hearing repeated misinformation about when the gates would open simply didn’t get the hell out of the tunnel and if even having to walk 100 miles………get on open space and find your way to the mall, even if it meant forfeiting your standing section, at least they would have been able to witness history.

All we can think of is many were hung up on where their section was…….and PURPLE was near the front, but somehow they fell for the hustle and waited and waited and waited. We truly hope they are compensated with perhaps a private session with President Obama and other things which make up for the calamity. Can you imagine when they get home and someone ask…….”so how was it??????” and their reply is “oh we were blocked underground!!!!!!!!”

They came for the inauguration but got stuck in a tunnel

Many holders of purple tickets spent hours in a tunnel under the National Mall instead of witnessing Obama’s swearing-in. Officials are investigating what went wrong.

By Robin Abcarian
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

January 23, 2009

Reporting from Washington — You wouldn’t think a presidential inauguration would require a survivors group. But shortly after thousands of ticket holders were trapped in an underground tunnel beneath the National Mall on Tuesday, a new Facebook group was born: Survivors of the Purple Tunnel of Doom. Membership as of Thursday evening: 3,950.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), head of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which was responsible for the event, has apologized to the distressed visitors — whose color-coded tickets were purple — and called for an investigation by the law enforcement agencies that planned the event, which include the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Capitol Police.

“Sen. Feinstein was very displeased,” said committee spokeswoman Carole Florman. “Word has gone out to get some answers.”

Among the nearly 2 million people who streamed onto the National Mall on Tuesday were thousands of purple-ticket holders. Some were campaign volunteers, some were well-connected donors, others had simply requested tickets from elected officials.

Many arrived five or six hours before the noon swearing-in, and were told that gates would open at 8 a.m. They formed themselves into a line that stretched south, more than a mile by many accounts, into the city’s 3rd Street tunnel, which is part of Interstate 395 and runs under the mall.

Then they waited. And waited. Nine o’clock came and went. The line stayed put. Parents grew uncomfortable holding small children because strollers weren’t allowed on the mall. Men relieved themselves against the tunnel walls because there were no portable toilets. To the tune of “We Shall Overcome,” they sang “We shall get inside.”

Eventually it became clear that not only was the line not moving, but that they had no way to get to any part of the mall in time to take in the inaugural moment. Some later said that the entrance gate to the purple area was closed, seemingly abandoned by security personnel.

“There was no one to aid or guide us,” said Pat Silberfeld, a Democratic activist from Beverly Hills. “I guess security totally broke down.” Silberfeld, who did not arrive at the tunnel until about 8 a.m. because she was suffering from food poisoning, saw a man writing “Free the tunnel people” in the grime of the tunnel wall.

“I don’t believe anybody who was not there fully understands the real potential there was in the line at the purple gate and in the Purple Tunnel of Doom for disaster,” said Lulu Chiu, a 23-year-old federal government employee. “It was only through the grace and civility of the people who are only now speaking out about it after the fact that there was not a fatal stampede or disruptive mob. It was only because we were all just happy that Obama was going to be our president that kept our spirits up.”

Clare Fader, 34, who’d taken the train from Baltimore that morning at 3 a.m. with her husband and two teenage cousins, had scouted the area the day before to make sure she knew where to go.

“We were doing as we were told,” Fader said. “At first the police seemed like they had things organized; they checked our tickets and told us to go into the tunnel. We were there for four hours. And they were the only authorities we saw. The most incredible part is that it could have been so dangerous if people had not behaved so beautifully.”

When she and her family finally left in frustration, they passed a police station and joked that perhaps if they were arrested, they could watch the inauguration on TV inside. Eventually, they ended up with about 20 strangers crowding around a parked car whose driver had turned up his radio so people could hear.

Late Thursday, Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terry Gainer, the Senate’s chief law enforcement officer, attended a meeting with the head of the Secret Service and the Capitol police. He also had spoken by phone with the District of Columbia’s police chief. They reviewed video of the purple gate taken by a fixed security camera as well as satellite and still photos, trying to figure out what had gone wrong. He disputed much of what eyewitnesses described, but admitted the situation was “clumsy.”

Gainer said the purple gate opened at 7:33 a.m. and did not close until moments before noon, when the metal detectors had to be removed to accommodate exiting crowds. He also said that people may not have realized how many law enforcement officers were in the crowd because many were not in uniform.

It appears, he said, that the tunnel backup occurred because some people with silver-colored tickets were misdirected to the parade route and had to be redirected to the mall. Also, President Bush’s motorcade blocked movement for a time.

“It was painful to people who had a bad experience,” Gainer said. “But I think it went very well for about 240,000 people with tickets and about 1.7 million people on the mall. Obviously, it did not go well for between 1,000 and 4,000, and I feel bad about that, but on balance, one couldn’t conclude anything but that this was a pretty well-run operation. . . . We did a good job on about 98% of this.”

Elected officials who were responsible for disbursing tickets heard from unhappy constituents and began pressing for answers.

In a letter to Feinstein, Maryland Democrat Rep. Chris Van Hollen wrote that he was “baffled by the breakdown, on such a broad scale, of the processing of people who followed the rules and came only to see, hear and be part of this remarkable moment in our nation’s history.”

Florman, the inauguration committee spokeswoman, said attempts would be made to compensate people for the foul-up.

“This won’t make it up to people,” she said, “but we are working on a plan to provide people who had this terrible day some commemorative materials.”

She said that would probably include invitations, programs and a color photo of Obama taking the oath of office. How the committee expects people to prove they were shut out is unclear. “We have to come up with something that is workable,” Florman said, “but doesn’t allow just anybody to say, ‘Hey, I was one of them.’ “

Natalie Baack, 27, works for an entertainment market research company. The Palms resident was with a friend and her friend’s 60-year-old mother. When they finally made their way out of the tunnel, and even hopped a fence, they ended up in front of the Canadian Embassy. She was so distraught, she was weeping as she craned her neck to see a television at the embassy.

“I was just crying and crying at this point,” Baack said. “A woman took my picture, and I asked her to delete it. She said, ‘I want to capture the moment.’ Then I told her why I was crying and she felt awful.”

Obsidian Dome is located a few miles south of the June Lake Loop along Hwy. 395. It’s easy to figure out how to get there though if you just look at a map online. One takes a dirt road off of 395 to get there, but I drove my Honda to the site if that is any indication of how easy the road is…

The eruption that formed Obsidian Dome, which is over a mile long and 300 feet high, took place only 550-600 years ago which is yesterday in geologic terms.

It’s harder to climb than it looks, but it is certainly not impossible – just slow.

The view at the top is worth it.

That’s Mono Lake off in the distance.

This is a tough place for life to scratch out an existence.

These Spanish tourists showed up as I was leaving and were afraid to climb the face of the Dome. So, I had to stick around a little longer to show them how it was done.
