No need to do any introductions on these cars, but as I was wandering around the Central Hall, these beauties were beckoning to me to have their features showcased. How about this 1959 Chevy Wagon? This is powered by a big block, but since the owner was no where to be found, I don’t know what engine is under the hood. All I know is that I want it bad. Take a look at a super sanitary 1962 Chevy Biscayne with the monster 409 under the hood. Every body panel is smooth, and the interior is factory correct, and it sports a 4 speed manual.

This Chevelle Super Sport is located at the Original Parts Group Booth, and is a great rolling advertisement for the company. It is very stealthy, as the car is equipped with a 396 Cu. In V-8. This car is truly drool worthy.

In the same booth is this very slick 1967 Buick Skylark Gran Sport, with the Buick 400 Cu In V-8 housed between the front rails. Check out the Star Trek inspired Air Cleaner.

The Chestnut-collared Longspur and the Golden-crowned sparrow are found in the Canadian West, inland as well as on the seacoast. They rarely visit the East of the country, they nest respectively in the humid steppes, where the vegetation is dense and tall, and in the peat bogs of the tundra. The Hooded Siskin is a South-American species that nests in the coastal regions and forest edges of Uruguay and eastern Argentina. Not very fearful, it feeds on seeds, berries, insects and grassy plants. As for the Rufous-sided Towhee, its habitat is southern Quebec. Comfortable in dense underbrush, it feeds on berries, weeds, insects and grasses. The length of the Chestnut-collared Longspur is 15 cm, the Golden-crowned sparrow’s length is 18 cm, the Hooded Siskin’s is 12 to 13 cm, and the Rufous-sided Towhee’s length is 19 to 22 cm.

On rencontre le bruant à ventre noir et le bruant à couronne dorée dans l’Ouest canadien, autant dans les terres que sur la côte. Rares visiteurs dans l’est du pays, ils nichent respectivement dans les steppes humides, où la végétation est dense et haute, et dans les tourbières de la toundra. Le chardonneret de Magellan est une espèce sud-américaine qui niche dans les régions côtières et les lisières des forêts de l’Uruguay et de l’est de l’Argentine. Peu craintif, il se nourrit de graines, de baies, d’insectes et d’herbacés. Le tohi à flancs roux, quant à lui, a pour habitat le sud du Québec. Amateur de sous-bois denses, il se nourrit de baies, de mauvaises herbes, d’insectes et de graminées. Le bruant à ventre noir a une longueur de 15 cm, le bruant à couronne dorée a une longueur de 18 cm, le chardonneret de Magellan a une longueur de 12 à 13 cm et le tohi à ventre roux a une longueur de 19 à 22 cm.

The Black-throated Gray Warbler and the Hermit Warbler are found in the western United States, in conifers forests and shrubbery. The Yellow-rumped Warbler nests throughout Québec and the Maritimes and spends the winter along the south-eastern coast of New Brunswisk and along the south-western coast of Nova Scotia. Found in mixed or conifer forests, it feeds on spruce budworms and small fruits, and drinks sap. The length of the Black-throated Gray Warbler is 13 cm, the Hermit Warbler’s length is 14 cm, and the Yellow-rumped Warbler is 12 to 16 cm in length.

On retrouve les parulines grise et à tête jaune dans l’ouest des États-Unis, dans les forêts de conifères et les arbustes. La paruline à croupion jaune, quant à elle, niche dans tout le Québec et les Maritimes et hiverne sur la côte sud-est du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur la côte sud-ouest de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Observée dans les forêts mixtes et de conifères, elle se nourrit de tordeuses, de petits fruits, et s’abreuve de sève. La paruline grise a une longueur de 13 cm, la paruline à tête jaune a une longueur de 14 cm et la paruline à croupion jaune mesure entre 12 et 16 cm de longueur.

The Glaucous Gull is a Nordic bird of Alaska, the Arctic and the Nouveau-Québec region. Passing through all the regions of Québec and the Maritimes during the migration period, it spends the winter in the Saint Lawrence gulf and estuary, along the Atlantic coastline and in Fundy Bay. Its diet is quite varied, and made up of penguin eggs and fledglings, adult birds, invertebrates, fish, insects and small fruits. A carrion-eater, it clears beaches of carcasses and eats the fæces and placentas of seals. The length of the Glaucous Gull is 66 to 76 cm and its average wingspan is 152 cm.

Le goéland bourgmestre est un oiseau nordique de l’Alaska, de l’Arctique et du Nouveau-Québec. De passage dans toutes les régions du Québec et des Maritimes en période de migration, il hiverne dans l’estuaire et le golfe du Saint-Laurent, sur le littoral atlantique et dans la baie de Fundy. Probando que el blues no distingue color ni país, Chris Duarte se unió con Bluestone Company, la principal banda de blues en Japón, para esta colaboración llamada “396”, que se presenta como una manera para que Duarte se consolide ante su fanaticada japonesa y, a la vez, darle una exposición en Estados Unidos a Bluestone Company. Aunque “396” aparece como un jam session, los japoneses no se muestran muy sueltos y, por el contrario, tienen un sonido muy preciso, sin trucos escondidos en los bolsillos, cosa que no es mala, dándole a la grabación un toque muy de las agrupaciones que suelen tocar en los bares.  Esto no permite que la guitarra de Chris Duarte sea muy fluida, como en discos anteriores, pero lo presenta como un buen colaborador y a Bluestone Company como una banda soporte que fácilmente puede encontrar un punto de equilibrio con cualquier músico. Este lugar común suena extraño, pero seguramente los fanáticos de uno y otro lado encontrarán algo para entretenerse.

La nit passada ha servit d’inspiració a més d’un compositor com és ara Mussorgski. Diuen que rebé l’encàrrec de posar música a un acte del drama “La bruixa” de Mengden, en què es descrivia el sàbat de les bruixes a la nit de Sant Joan: així nasqué “Una nit a la Muntanya Pelada”. De Mozart (qui va ser batiat, per cert, com Joan Crisòstom Wolfgang Teòfil Amadeus) podem dir que en el Catàleg Köchel no hi trobam obres dedicades concretament a Sant Joan, però, vés per on –avui que parlarem de violins-, el seu Adagio per a piano i violí en do menor està catalogat com KV …396

A popolio selection of today’s New Releases.

Last week began the seven part series on the history of the Corvette, starting with the first generation of Corvettes.  This week, we’re looking at the Corvette’s next evolutionary leap:  the 1963-67 “C2.”

With an established reputation and a (finally) profitable product line, the guys in the Corvette design and engineering team got down to the business of building a second generation of “the poor man’s sports car.”  Japanese-American designer Larry Shinoda had already conceived a prototype, dubbed the “Mako Shark” after the deadly sea creature that inspired it, which toured autoshows across the country in 1961.  Thankfully, basing a sportscar around the shape of a fish worked out for GM’s design department, something that BMW couldn’t pull off forty years later with the “Moby Dick” shaped Z4 roadster.

Of course, with the mechanical wonders that Zora Arkus-Duntov’s team put under the ride, The General could have signed off on a goldfish-shaped car and still sold thousands.  Right off the line, the new ‘Vette featured four-wheel independent suspension, something that’s still not available on many rear-wheel drive cars.  Up front, engine options were limited to the 327 c.i. small block V-8, in both carbureted and fuel-injected versions, kicking out 260 and 350 horsepower, respectively.  1963 was also the only year to have a split rear window and fake chrome hood louvers, both of which had disappeared by 1964.

1965 came in with more goodies than a fat kid on Halloween.  For starters, the Duntov dream team had installed 4-wheel disc brakes on every single Corvette.  And in order to make use of the improved stopping power, Chevy offered the all-new Mark IV 396 big-block as a 425 horsepower alternative to the 327 small-block.  Within a year, the big engine was bored out to 427 cubic inches, and by 1967 came with an optional “tri-power” triple Holley carb setup, grinding the pavement with up to 435 h.p.  And if you were one of the lucky twenty buyers that year, you might have driven away with the L-88 427 c.i. engine package.  Although it was officially rated at 430 horsepower, most owners claimed the car felt closer to the 550-horse range.  Today, the L-88 has become the most sought-after Corvette, fetching over $600,000 at auction.

Although the Corvette was slowly drifting closer to its American musclecar roots than its European styling influences, the little coupe that could was quickly coming of age.  Zora Arkus-Duntov himself was even overheard saying “finally, a Corvette that I would not be ashamed to drive in Europe.”  And now, with a battle-hardened design and engineering team behind it, the Corvette was ready to enter the big-engine era of the North American automobile in high gear.

And here’s where I reveal my dirty little secret;  this fuel-injected ‘63 split-window is the centrepiece of my own personal collection, spanning over 15 vehicles in almost every automotive genre.  I’ve always preferred to stay modest about my garage, but it’s time I came out and showed my loyal readers what I’m really all about.  In fact, here’s a picture of my ‘Vette parked in its usual spot:
