Well, in one year, if all goes according to plan, I will have found a way to be passionate about my job.

Truth be told, I don’t feel like I’ve made a lot of progress towards that goal over the past 35 days. I have made time on a more regular basis for my crafts, which helps me think more about what I like to do rather than what I feel like I should be doing. I have remained committed to the Blogtoberfest kick-start. Give credit where credit is due, right?

I feel like I need some sort of program, though, some sort of “creative life workbook” with daily assignments. Hmmm. Maybe the most impactful creative assignments are the simplest in concept? I’m thinking the 365 self portrait project, project spectrum, the ABC-along…all online, participate-if-you-want, type of endeavors. Or a random Wednesdays, Friday finds, etc type of structure?

Yeah, HELLO. After typing that, I realize my personality is shining right through. I need a plan to be creative, oh yes I do. I’d be open to your suggestions, as I think the best plan for me to be in that “uncomfortable space” of having to think differently is to not have a plan (!).

One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot this week is when I have actually loved my job, and was excited to get to work, when getting up and out the door didn’t feel like a chore. I’m trying to draw out what it was I liked so much about that particular job. The job I keep thinking about is when I worked at Cookie Bouquet.

I worked the front counter, taking orders over the phone, assembling bouquets, helping with the window displays and ringing up walk in sales.

I liked that I knew when my work was done and that there was something you could see for your day’s work. You left when all the bouquets for the morning delivery run were assembled and ready to go, all lined up on the delivery shelf.

I believed in what I was doing (I know, it’s a stretch, but bear with me…) It’s easy to believe in a cookie. Almost everyone likes them, and if you don’t like oatmeal, we had 11 other kinds to choose from. Selling a cookie was easy.

It was a team effort in order to get everything done. Everyone’s job was very clearly stated. You were either the Manager, a Decorator, a Delivery Person, a Baker or … me. Sales rep, cashier, cookie icer, order taker. If we needed dough, the Baker made it. If we needed a bear in a doctor’s coat, the Decorator frosted it.

There is a clear process and objective. Cookies start with flour and sugar and end with a ready-to-go-bouquet. It’s business with a simple profit and loss statement – buy ingredients, make cookies, sell bouquets. Revenue – Expense = Profit.

I was creative. Oh yes, I sold a cookie basket with 50 picnic themed cookies, including ants, red-and-white gingham tissue paper. Or a favorite things basket for a couple including rollercoasters and a spaghetti dinner (the decorators didn’t always love me, but we got repeat business)!

Oh yes, there were long hours and cookies that crumbled and once, just once, a vulture bouquet sent to a graduation party instead of lily-shaped cookies. We had an employee stealing cash and sometimes ran out of dough (the to-be-baked kind). The frosting recipe is best kept secret (Crisco, ew). You need to start work at 7:30 and work in shifts. You’re standing up the entire time and clean the bathroom. Nothing’s perfect.

I think it’s possible to feel that way about my work again. I’m just not sure I’ll ever feel that way about mutual funds.

Sometimes I wish that someone had told me that a private college and student loans would mean I HAVE to make a certain amount of money in order to pay them back. I KNOW, sounds so simple, and obvious, but I really didn’t understand the full implications of what starting my adult life in debt would mean to my options. I’m paying over half the amount of my rent in student loan payments. Sometimes I think the only way to get the life I really want is to win the lottery and pay off those student loans – if nothing else, I do know working at Cookie Bouquet wouldn’t cover the bills I have now.

I wish I knew what I wanted to do, other than Not This. Sometimes I think other people have already found my dream job, but then they have skills and talent I lack. I wonder if I could do an interview series on people who’s creative jobs I wish I had…? Or a vocation vacation…?

Eudocimus ruber  Ibis rouge  /  Scarlet Ibis  

Originating from South America, the Scarlet Ibis is regularly found in Florida’s mangroves, mud-flats and marshes. The greater part of the world’s population of Scarlet Ibis, however, is found in Venezuela. Threatened, it is hunted for its feathers, which supply the local crafts industry in Guyana. The length of the Scarlet Ibis is 50 cm.

Originaire d’Amérique du Sud, l’ibis rouge est régulièrement observé dans les mangroves, les vasières et les marais de la Floride. L’essentiel de la population mondiale de l’ibis rouge se trouve toutefois au Vénézuela. Menacé, il est chassé pour sa chair et pour ses plumes qui alimentent, en Guyane, l’artisanat local. L’ibis rouge mesure 50 cm.

The Clay-coloured Sparrow and the Dark-eyed Junco are two nesting birds from Québec and the Maritimes. Their habitats are clearings, dry lands, pastures and conifer forests, and they feed essentially on various sorts of insects and seeds. Both birds spend the winter in the United States, though the Dark-eyed Junco is well capable of spending the winter within its nesting range. The Lazuli Bunting nests in the riverside shrubbery and the mixed forests of the western United States. The length of the Clay-coloured Sparrow is 13 to 14 cm, the Dark-eyed Junco’s length is 15 to 17 cm, and the Lazuli Bunting’s is 14 cm.

Le bruant des plaines et le junco ardoisé sont deux oiseaux nicheurs du Québec et des Maritimes. Ils ont pour habitats les clairières, les terrains secs, les pâturages et les forêts de conifères, et ils s’alimentent essentiellement d’insectes et de graines de diverses natures. Tous deux hivernent aux États-Unis, bien que le junco ardoisé peut tout aussi bien passer l’hiver dans son aire de nidification. Quant au passerin azuré, il niche dans les buissons riverains et les forêts mixtes de l’ouest des États-Unis. Le bruant des plaines a une longueur de 13 à 14 cm, le junco ardoisé a une longueur de 15 à 17 cm et le passerin azuré mesure 14 cm de longueur.

The Blackburnian Warbler and the Black-throated Green Warbler both nest in the boreal fir forests and the mixed forests of southern Québec and the Maritimes. Essentially insect-eaters, they feed mainly on budworms that they capture on the surfaces of leaves or at the tops of conifers. During the winter season, they are found in the United States, the former in the North-East and the latter in the West. MacGillivray’s Warbler is found in the dense underbrushes of the American West. The length of the Blackburnian Warbler is 11 to 14 cm and the Black-throated Green Warbler’s length is 12 to 14 cm, while MacGillivray’s Warbler is 13 cm in length.

La paruline à gorge orangée et la paruline à gorge noire nichent toutes deux dans les sapinières boréales et les forêts mixtes du Québec méridional et des Maritimes. Essentiellement insectivores, elles s’alimentent surtout de tordeuses qu’elles capturent à la surface des feuilles ou à la cime des conifères. En saison hivernale, on les retrouve aux États-Unis, la première dans le Nord-Est et la seconde, dans l’Ouest. Quant à la paruline des buissons, on l’observe dans les sous-bois épais de l’Ouest américain. La paruline à gorge orangée a une longueur de 11 à 14 cm, la paruline à gorge noire a une longueur de 12 à 14 cm et la paruline des buissons a une longueur de 13 cm.

I was just inspired by a commercial for a tooth whiting product.

The ad started with testimonials for how “it” ‘was better than she ever expected’ and how he ‘just couldn’t have imagined this a year ago’ made me stop and think that it was a sign, that this project I want you to help me with is the first step in the right direction.

And when they showed what they were talking about – whitening molds – I had to laugh. If I’m finding inspiration before 6 AM from teeth cleaners, I really need some help.

Over Labor Day, I started really thinking about how I labor… in a windowless office for a boss I’ve never met, in a company selling products that you can’t  touch, and my actual day-to-day job is summarized in buzzwords: “implementing standardized and scalable solutions”. It’s a good job, if good means well-paid, something I do well and right now, in this market, a pretty safe bet.

Except that I don’t really feel good about it anymore. I’ve been daydreaming about what I would really be passionate about and haven’t been able to pin that down either. I do know that since I spend the majority of my time at work, what that work is overflows into the rest of my life. Since I do think you have to know what you’re looking for in order to find it, here’s what I know so far…

Creativity is important to me. I want to be able to make and act on my own decisions. I want to do minimal work behind a desk. I enjoy working with a core team of people and like having a leadership role. Long hours are okay with me as long as they have a purpose and I enjoy what I’m doing. I want to be able to see my work. I would like to be able to wear jeans rather than suits. Predictable income is important. I like goals and projects with clear deadlines. I like tasks that can be completed. I’m organized and can think through things step by step. I prefer not to be the only person worried about the smaller details. I like to travel and see new places and meet new people. I want to be able to say yes more than no. I like to work hard at something I love.

So, I’m giving myself from September 9, 2009 until October 10, 2010 to find a way to be passionate about my job. I’m going to things against the wall, so to speak, and see what sticks.

My new buzzword are Play, Make, Believe and am going to work every day to do each one everyday.
