Exploring Sabayon 3D Desktop Effects Using Beryl

To enable the 3D desktop effect, you need to firstly to go to the Sabayon Linux Desktop Acceleration Menu i.e by clicking Menu–> Applications–> Settings–>Acceleration Manager.

Once you are in the Sabayon Linux Desktop Acceleration Menu, click on the radio button to select XGL Desktop Acceleration. Then click on the “Activate Desktop Acceleration” button.

You then have to restart your PC and after it reboot logging to another user of your choice and choose GNOME as the Window manager. (You can also try logging to root user, but mine works with other user, using GNOME.)

After login to another user in my case user idris and chose GNOME for the Window Manager (GNOME works for me better than KDE), go to System–>Preferences–>Acceleration Manager.

The system will prompt you a root password, to launch the Acceleration Manager.

After you have keyed in the root password successfully, the Sabayon Linux Desktop Acceleration menu will be displayed. Select the XGL Desktop Acceleration and click on the Activate Desktop.

In the Beryl Settings Manager (mine is version 0.1.4) you will only need to explore the Desktop and Visual Options.

You have to reboot the system.

On another user which has a KDE window manager, Beryl’s 3D effects also worked.

These are some allday’s desktop features I simply cannot do without (anymore):

• Virtual desktops / workspaces, known from Apple and *ix, but not available ootb in windows.
• A screen shot utility that immediately saves new shots into a specified folder without the need of any interaction.
• A tool to organize shortcuts on the desktop.

On the search for a good and free solution I stumbled upon following tools:

• yodm3d - Freeware desktop manager. Provides 4 desktops on a nice semi-transparent 3d cube; download e.g. from http://www.klitetools.com/comments.php?catid=58&id=5280. Unfortunately I found that yodm3d is no longer available as freeware. Starting from version 1.5, the product is called “DeskSpace” and sold as Shareware.
• sysinternals desktops – Advertised on Microsoft Technet, claims to be less error-prone than other tools because it uses Windows internal objects to manage multiple Desktops.
• lightscreen – Open source screen shot utility. Very intuitive and lightweight.
• After being used to manipulate the background image and insert semitransparent boxes into it faking organisational units for shortcuts, I found now fences which provides such organisational units. fences is free for personal use.

My experiences with them:

• yodm3d: The last version 1.4 seems to have some bugs (at least in Windows Vista). The worst bug: Sometimes, during rotating the cube, yodm3d silently closes some arbitrary open window/does not open it again when switching to the corresponding Desktop. Thus I sometimes lost a program’s state or even some unsaved data. This led me to remove the tool again.
• Desktops has several disadvantages and also bugs:
  • You cannot move a window from one Desktop to another. You have to open it on the right Desktop from the beginning.
  • The systray icons and bubbles showing up are only visible on the Desktop on which the program has been started.
  • Some programs, e.g. PDFCreator, always display their dialog on the first Desktop, even though it was triggered from another Desktop.
  • After some time a very strange behavior showed up: On pressing “Enter” in an arbitrary program, the input was ignored by the program and the Windows Media Center was started instead. This only occured as soon as I had multiple desktops.

  This led me to uninstall the program again.

• Fences dramatically compromised performance of Windows Vista with and without SP2.

1. Pastikan BIOS elo pada telah diset BOOT from CD/DVD.

2. Masukan CD Image yang berisi OS Installer Ubuntu.

3. Gunakan tombol panah kiri kanan dan atas bawah ↔ ↕ pilih Bahasa Indonesia.

   

4. Lalu tekan ENTER dan akan muncul layar sepreti dibawah ini:

kemudian akan muncul layar seperti dibawah ini :

2. Perhatikan layar sebelah kiri harus telah terpilih Bhs Indonesia, lalu klik Forward atau Lanjut.

   

3. Ubuntu secara automatis sudah memilih Lokasi + Time Zone tinggal klik Forward.

   

4. Keyboard layout biarkan pada posisi USA tekan Forward atau Lanjutkan.

5. Nah kalo keluar seperti langsung klik aje Forward (Lanjutkan)
   

6. Terus isi dech nama sesuai keingin elo. Kolom keduanya akan terisi sebagai nama login elo, catat kalo perlu supaya jangan lupa. Terus isi passwordnya sesuai keinginan elo pade, jangan lupa catet. Kalo ingin nech Ubuntu automatis login kolom kotanye elo centang. Klik Forward ( Lanjutkan ).

1. Mo install Boot Loader di partisi mane? Biasenye di /dev/sda1 lalu klik OK

   

2. Terus klik Install.

   

3. Asyik doi mulai proses installnye, tunggui dech!

   

4. Kurang lebih 15 menitan bisa lebih cepat ato lama tergantung ame jeroan kompi elo.

   

5. Klik Restart.

   

6. Keluarin CD nye terus tekan Enter.

   

7. Kalo dilayar kaya begokin elo kudu masukin user name abis itu passwordnya terus

Enter, selanjutnye drendengdeng asyik tinggal make atau ditune abis dech.

Its barely been a week since I installed Ubuntu and I can’t see reasons to boot XP.

1. Almost virus free compared to windows: I don’t hesitate to connect pendrives and stuff to my computer anymore. Wat more? You can see viruses creeping in mass data storages only waiting to get blasted.

2. The height to customisation: I can sit for hours customising my desktop, I love to do it and when you are in Ubuntu you can’t see any limits to customising your desktop. Only if you are connected to web and have Ubuntu installed . Wat more? You can customise it to look exactly look like MacOSX leapord or Vista.

3. Open source applications: Superb open source applicaion which provide as better replacements to their ‘buy’ counterparts. eg: GIMP, Open office, compiz fusion, Beryl, Gparted. Wat more? You get awesome free games and with ATI supporting openGL in ubuntu it like…….ahhh.

4. Huge workspace: With number of desktops running you just can’t think of finishing up the workspace. Wat more? Compiz Fusion’s 3d windows, cube desktop make an awesome combination.

5. Damn good eye candy: Ubuntu is a host for deadly software which make ppl burn their eyes when they come to see your Rig. Compiz Fusion is one such great tool for adding prudiest eyecandy for least memory usage. Wat more? the minimise, maximise, close, open etc animations of applications are in your control now. You can explode, burn windows while closing or make a paper plane out of the window when minimising or when you get bored shake windows to experience the inertial physics.

6. Panels: Put panels everywhere and anywhere of any size to access things at the tip. Wat more? Panels can be made transparent, or you can make your own tileof the panel size and tiled horizontally to put as a background of the panel.

7. Strech icons: Right click and strech icons. Use text files like sticky notes or put small pics in desktops or anything you can imagine.

For the first post of 2009, I have some videos to show. The first video is about a new 3D interface for the desktop environment that tries to mimic and enhance the real world work spaces.

The second video is about a system that allows users to visualize social networks, namely the relationships between the users of networks. With that they can explore that network, seeing the information of it’s users and the groups that exist inside the network.

The last video is about a new calendar interface, that was built in the Human Computer Interaction Lab of the University of Maryland.

pagi-pagi iseng coba baca artikel tentang 3D desktop di ubuntu, pingen coba install di komputer, tapi ada kendala memori vga yang ada di komputerku tidak cukup untuk install 3D desktop. ah…kecewanya.

akhir-nya browsing sana sini. nggak pulang-pulang. he. he.. ketemu juga paling tidak themes sama window login aja yang berubah sudah cukup menyenangkan untuk menghilangkan kejenuhan dengan tampilan desktop yang monoton… bosen aja..tidak ganti-ganti… he.. he.. he.

ok. dari pada panjang lebar kayak jajaran genjang. lansung aja.. kemon install ubutu satanicnya.

catatan: jangan lupa sediakan camilan dan peralatan perang seperti selimut dan kasur (emangnya mau tidur).

Langkah pertama pastikan sistem operasi ubuntu anda sudah terinstall, disini saya menggunakan ubuntu-8.10 yang telah terupdate dengan baik, dan pastikan juga komputer anda terkoneksi secara langsung ke internet.

Catatan: perintah ini hanya untuk GNOME aja. untuk KDE XFCE dll. silahkan searching sendiri di internet.

jika tidak ada kesalahan. restart komputer anda. dan seakarang tinggal lakukan perubahan-perubahan kecil pada komputer anda. yang membuat anda lebih bersemangat.

untuk mengganti login window anda dengan ubuntu satanic yang tadi telah terinstall. klik System –> Administartion –> login window. pilih login windows ubuntu satanic yang sesuai dengan selera anda. emangnya mau maakan pake’ selera. he. he..

No one there is unaware of Linux OS’s now, many of them has even given it a try. The reason is simple its freely, legally and easily available. No issues if you share your copy with your friends. It’s synonymous to freedom. There where times when Linux use to lag behind in compatibility and user experience, but things have taken a steep turn and it’s time to recognize that Linux has crossed the windows standards and is making it way setting new standards.

When Richard Stallman and Linus Torvald sowed the seed of todays GNU/Linux little did they know the revolution it was to make. Richard Stallman was the man behind behin GNU and Linus behind the Linux Kernel.

Linux now has many distros actively developed and mostly targeting a group of user. We have Ubuntu one of the most popular distro of today home and laptop use which is easily installable and is available for download online or by post for free if you register online.

Projects  like CompizFusion contributed in make Linux Experience really memoreble. It makes use of your system graphics and give  a whole new desktop of special and 3d effects. You switch to different desktops (Linux by default have feature for multiple dektop) in 3d rotation etc. Other feature that is worth mentioning is the option to backup your system to a CD/DVD that can be installed on another system or used as a Live Cd.

Should we use Windows by paying huge sum (or pirated at the risk of being sued) or should we shift to Linux that is free, beautiful and packed with more features? The answer is yours! We have decided, Windows is no more for us, we have breathed new life in to our desktops and soon you will too.

One of the biggest benefit in Linux is the ease in getting softwares you need. Each distros of Linux mainatain their on repositeries where the softwares are stored. You can install the application using the Add/Remove Software in the menu. Just search what software you want, you will get the whole list, mark the required software and apply. The Os downlaods and installs the application for you. You can also download the DVD of repositories. Another application for this purpose is Synaptic Package Manager. It also installed the dependencies with selected app. And its nice to know that all the application in the repositories are free and open source.

So its time  for people of world to rethink  and take a intelligent decision. I spend half of my time with Windows and the other half with Ubuntu. However when I last use Ubuntu and switch back to Windows I just can’t bear the windows shell’s unstability and other related issues. So transforming desktop into completely replaced with a new interface, reffered to as shell replacement and can be a very good idea if you are still using windows shell.

For first timers using a shell manager like shellon which would let you choose which shell to use when starting up makes your work easier.

Apparently Cairo shell another Windows shell alternative appears to be the most used shell to replace the windows UI. Cairo is really easy to install, anyone with no eperience in shell replacement can replace using the cairo desktop. Other downloads like the Cairo desktop, start bar, desktop concept, desktop switching and revolution wallpaper.

Another good and easy to install shell is the Talisman. Helps to keep your desktop more organised.

Black box is a window manager for the X Window System shell with lot of development activity currently going.It is fairly simple to make it look really cool using premade skins from the forum, though it isn’t basically to look cool. It has a dedicated forum to dicuss problems, bugs and to find modifications and cool plugins for the shell.

If you want to make your desktop 3D, with physics enabled. You can try the recently released simple to use Bumptop shell. A boon for microsofts surface. It makes your desktop easy to organise if you prefer to keep a lot of files for easy access there. Still I could not adjust with it due to its first release and lot of  lack of some essential features. But it is really worth a try, nothing to loose.

Aston shell-It replaces the standard Windows Desktop

and provides you with a host of new features, such as Sidebars, clock, weather monitor, animated buttons, transparency effects and much more. Several other partial shell replacements like aston menu and panels are available at the Aston’s website. Aston shell with panels make the dektop look really cool.

Shells like Flyakite(Mac OS X transformation pack), Vista transformation pack and 7 transformation pack are more or less self explainatory.

Previously discussed sharpE now SharpEnviro shell is another good to use shell.

Lastly, FYI it is also possible to transform your Windows environment to KDE or Gnome shell (Linked to the tutorials) with limited usability. Not recommended for non experienced.

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) , we posted a brief  post to focus your attention on Cooliris in its, not well known, Linux version. In fact on Linux, you are not always allowed to install directly Cooliris as Firefox add-on and the same happens when you try to install Cooliris using the Firefox Add-on official webpage   In this case, the only solution we have, is represented by surfing on the Cooliris homepage and click on the Linux version in the Downloads Page. The xpi file will be immediately opened and in just few clicks it is installed. Cooliris allows you to search videos, images and photographs in many sites (Google Image Search, YouTube, Flickr, Hulu, online retailers, and other sites), watch them on a 3D wallpaper or on a full-screen slideshow using the toggle button. This program contains also an interesting bunch of channels as News, Sport, Photos of the day, Music Videos, Comedy, etc.. UsingCooliris you can also share your multimedia stuff with friends or keep them in your Favorites. At the moment this Linux version of Cooliris runs on Firefox 3.1+ using Ubuntu 8.04+, Fedora 10.0+ or OpenSuse 11+. Recommended!

Wer in den letzten Tagen die IT News verfolgt hat ist um das Programm “BumpTop” nicht herumgekommen. BumpTop setzt sich zum Ziel den Desktop dreidimensional zu machen um ihn “realer” zu machen und um das Arbeiten zu erleichtern.

MS-Bob

Ein ganz ähnliches Projekt gab es bereits 1995 von niemand geringeren als Microsoft. Die Frau von Bill Gates schaf das Projekt MS-Bob – eine Oberfläche die den Desktop von Windows 95 (funktioniert aber auch mit Windows 98, ME und XP) ersetzt. Als Oberfläche gab es virtuelle Zimmer, in denen Dokumente (Dateien) abgelegt wurden, Programme gestartet werden können (zb. durch den Kalender in der Küche) usw. Dabei funktionierte MS-Bob erstaunlich gut, jedoch wollte es trotz des großen Erfolgs von Windows 95, niemand kaufen.

Nun ist die Version 1.0 von BumpTop erhältlich, ein ähnliches Projekt – aber mit 14 Jahren technologieunterschied. BumpTop verwandelt die Desktopoberfläche in einen Raum mit Wänden. An allen Wänden können Dateien, Notizen, Widgets, Bilder usw. abgelegt werden. Einzelne Dateien können zu Staplen zusammengefügt, durchgeblättert, sortiert, verschickt… werden. Die grossen Zukunftschancen von BumpTop liegen vor allem in den Widgets. Bisher gibt es ein Facebook und ein Twitter Widget, die es ermöglichen Bilder per Drag and Drop hochzuladen bzw. ein Statusupdate zu machen (leider war es mir aber nicht möglich mich in Twitter einzuloggen). Die Möglichkeiten sind hier, sobald es eine aktive Community gibt, praktisch unbegrenzt.

Ich habe BumpTop bereits ausführlich getestet. Die Grundfunktionen funktionieren sehr gut, der Desktop ist schick und lässt sich gut anpassen. Vor allem das Stapeln und durchblättern von Dateien ist ein Feature, das ich mich schon lange von meinem Desktop wünsche. Einige Funktionen werden durch BumpTop jedoch auch verkompliziert. So ist es nun zb. umständlicher eine Datei umzubenennen oder den Papierkorb zu leeren. Auch die Ordneransicht (Grid) auf dem Desktop ist nicht immer ideal. Der Ressourcenverbrauch ist nach 2 Stunden Nutzung relativ gering (63 MB Arbeitsspeicher). Jedoch gibt es bei einigen Tätigkeiten, wie das Anzeigen von Bildern, immer kleine Verzögerungen wodurch das Programm noch keinen “runden” Eindruck macht.

Fazit: Zurzeit ist BumpTop vor allem viel Eyecandy. Wenn es den Machern jecoch gelingt eine grosse und aktive Community aufzubauen, die aktiv an der Weiterentwicklung und Erweiterungen arbeitet sehe ich großes Zukunftspotenzial.
