I love this time of year…time to re-evaluate who we are, where we are going and what we want to be doing…just in time for the new year! My journey is moving toward trying to figure out how I gained 2.0 lbs per year for the past 20 years and ended up now where I am ….overweight…and just not happy about it!  With more and more literature out there about how fat is toxic to the body,  my mind says, “It’s time to do something about this” but my reluctance to get started stands in my way. Oh, I have given it the half hearted attempts at going to the gym “to get in shape” but never really getting serious about losing 40 lbs!  Today I am SERIOUS about weight loss!

To get started, three things must be in place for success:

1). I know something MUST change today!

2). I understand to my core that I MUST be the one to change it!

3). I believe I CAN change it and will change it.

My blog, beginning December 1, 2009-April 30, 2010 will be the outline of the ALPO DIET!  This  blog is my way of keeping myself accountable and by sharing my thoughts, ideas and outlined plan, I will keep myself on track!

What is the ALPO Diet you ask?

The ALPO Diet is the diet that if I don’t succeed in losing the 40 lbs by April 30, 2010, then I will EAT a can of ALPO DOG FOOD on May 1, 2010!!!!

The ALPO can is sitting next to the frig to remind me that horse-chunks don’t taste good and by using a little leaverage (the ALPO can) I  can keep myself on the path to success. Using leaverage to accomplish  goals helps intensify the negative (pain) and increase my desire for pleasure (feeling when I lose the weight).

I am going to specifically focus on the number 2 on the list below however, we will be working on the other four areas also!!!

The Five Things That I Believe WE MOST want in Life:

1). Emotional Mastery: Control over our thoughts and emotions.

2). Physical Mastery:  Eating for health and wellness, not for security and comfort.

3). Relationship Mastery: Feeling valued and creating value in the relationship with others.

4). Financial Mastery: Knowing how to generate income in an up or down economy and the security and comfort of knowing I live below what I generate in order to become financially secure.

5). Time Mastery: Utilizing my time wisely to create efficient “operations” in my daily life. Do things once, the right way and eliminate ineffective efforts and misuses of time. This is also the concept of using “time” to my advancement and gaining MY time on a daily basis.

More later….on my way to the gym right now for an easy, long workout to get started. I will be running only for 1 minute this week and increase it by a minute a day so that my January 1, 2010 I will be up to 20 minutes per day.

I am working out Monday-Friday for 1.0-1.5 hours per day and resting on the weekend. On the weekend it is my JOB to walk the dog (which I love) so I will do that but not go to the gym. That’s why after 31 days I will only be up to 20 minutes per day on the treadmill!

Onward and Upward…won’t this be exciting to accomplish this goal! Finally, no more procratinating…setting the goal and staying focused! Love it!

I have a passion for books…if you were to walk into my room on any given day you’d find tons of books surrounding my bed..novels, non-fiction, spirituality books, textbooks.  Over the last few months I have been working towards becoming a Kaizen Muse Creativity Coach and so sitting next to me right now are Jill Badonsky’s The Nine Modern Day Muses, Martha Beck’s Steering By Starlight,  Eric Maisel’s Creativity for Life just to name a few.

The resounding theme for these books is that FEAR is our biggest reason for not doing something.  Fear of rejection, fear of being criticized, fear of failure, or even fear of success causes emotional and creative freezing.   In his book One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way Dr. Robert Mauer says that  “fear can cause you unconsciously to sabotage your best intentions.”

How do we overcome this powerful emotion of fear?  Well, one way to help ovecome fear to be prepared.  Twila Thorp’s says in her book The Creative Habit “In order to be creative you have to know how to be prepared to be creative.”   One way to prepared yourself to be creative is by incorporating some type of  ritual or habit into your creative life.   You need rituals to flex your creative muscles.  Having a ritual is the start to being prepared.  Eric Maisel states that’s “we live in an extremely ceremony-less culture.”  By crafting our own rituals you can make life feel more special.

By using Kaizen, or small steps, we can begin to bring that feeling of special back into our lives.  A small step of journaling one word everyday can become a ritual that helps you to move past creative blocks and to start writing.  Remember intention is the mother of invention.  Other small rituals could be lighting a candle before you sit down to draw or paint.  It could be mind mapping your creative intentions before you start on a mixed media project.  What ever ritual you create, make sure its small and simple.

Yesterday was my 40th birthday.  Being 40 puts you right in the middle of life.  I feel like my mom is saying “You’ve played around for 40 years now its time to get down to the nitty gritty and make something of yourself…or on the other hand maybe its time to stop doing all the nitty gritty and spread your wings.”

I just completed my first Research Paper that is now available on my Research Paper section of my blog.

The paper is titled “Why The Behemoth is Unlikely to be a Dinosaur”

In this paper I use the sexual reproduction system of dinosaur to demonstrate how the behemoth is unlikely to be a dinosaur as many Young Earth Creationist claim.

December’s coming soon. Very soon. I keep thinking it’s only half way through November, when in truth its not. Which is pretty scary, considering that the last major thing I remember was dressing up as Mario, which was only eight days ago!

So, surely there must be a special plan for the last month of good old 09? Considering plans and I go together like ice cream and curry, it seems doubtful. But the reasons plans didn’t work beforehand was because I expected too much, and I expected all this to just happen on its own.

Well, not this time.

This time, I’ve got some realistic goals set in mind. They’re not going to revolutionize anything, but hey, you’re reading this blog now- its not going to revolutionize the blog’s popularity, but if you keep visiting, maybe, and eventually, it will. This plan will work not because it’s viable- but because its doable. Not because it could be done, but because it would be done.

A part of the plan is to write three chapters of Intensity by 5th January 2010 (that’s a date, folks). Considering that Intensity has been going slower then a turtle these past few months, setting a bar for three new chapters certainly seems like the best thing to do.

Another piece of the plan is to have drawn a total of 40 Pokemon by January- so I’ve already drawn 9, only 31 to go! It does seem like an unrealistic goal, but it can be done. Especially if I set myself in a drawing mood- then there’s nothing that can stop me from committing a drawing spree. =D

And finally? Nothing much. Just a load of coursework and homework, and possibly some sort of Christmas gift to the friends of Facebook. I never know what happens when it comes to me- I end up doing the exact opposite of what I want to do, which is pretty ironic. >_>

And that’s my plans for December. Will it work? I suppose you’ll have to wait and see!

Perteneció a la denominada “Quinta del Biberón”. Especialmente combatió en la 40 Brigada Mixta, al mando del Tte. Coronel Antonio Ortega Gutiérrez.

Combatió en la batalla de La Casa de Campo de Madrid… bueno, os puedo contar de todo, según me contó mi abuela, mi abuelo llegó a luchar con cadáveres en las trincheras, es decir, que un día estabas con un compañero pegando tiros, y al día siguiente se lo cargaban de un balazo, y ahí quedaba, en la trinchera muerto, eso es uno de los detalles que me cuenta. Otro suceso que recuerdo, es que mi abuelo llevaba una cicatriz en una de las manos, debido a que en uno de los combates, una granada estalló cerca de él, saltándole metralla a la mano, dejándosela herida. 

El 26 de Marzo de 1939, 1 día antes de que la 40 Brigada Mixta se disolviera de por vida, se pasa a las armas nacionales para no correr peor suerte. Entonces es capturado, seguramente pasaría 2 noches en el calabozo, la noche del 26 de Marzo y el 1 de Abril. Al día siguiente, el 2 de Abril fue deportado al campo de concentración de Ronda, en Málaga. Allí compañeros suyos fueron fusilados, pero la suerte estuvo de su lado, un oficial nacional era conocido suyo y gracias a él logró salir. Mi abuelo estuvo 32 días concentrado, desde el 2 de Abril  hasta el 3 de Mayo de 1939, que se le entregó un documento firmado por parte del tribunal, en el que se le concedió permiso provisional para marchar.

El 6 de Mayo de 1939, por fin le llega otro documento, en este caso un tipo de salvoconducto, otorgado por la comandancia militar de Ronda, en el que expresa que no se le ponga impedimento en su marcha. Eso sí, nada más llegar a Granátula de Calatrava, su pueblo natal, debía presentarse en el cuartel de la Guardia Civil para demostrar que no había huido ni nada.

Prosecutors demanded a 40-year jail term Wednesday for Khmer Rouge prison chief Duch, as the former cadre made a final apology for his role in the deaths of 15,000 Cambodians at his torture centre.

The country’s UN-backed war crimes court heard closing arguments from both sides in its first trial delving into the horrors of the communist regime behind the “Killing Fields” atrocities three decades ago.

Under their leader Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge wiped out nearly two million people through starvation, overwork and execution in their bid to turn Cambodia back to a rural “Year Zero” between 1975 and 1979.

Lawyers for the prosecution said expressions of remorse by Duch — whose real name is Kaing Guek Eav — did not amount to a full guilty plea for his time in charge of S-21, or Tuol Sleng, the movement’s main prison.

“We submit… that the sentence to be submitted by this trial chamber should be 40 years in prison,” prosecutor Bill Smith told judges.

“In imposing this penalty, you are not taking away the accused’s humanity but you are giving it back to the victims of S-21,” he said. “Let’s recall that unlike the prisoners at S-21 he is being met with open and evenhanded justice.”

Duch’s crimes on their own warranted the maximum life sentence that the tribunal could impose — but a previous period of unlawful detention should reduce that to a 45-year term, Smith said, explaining the prosecution’s demand.

The 67-year-old’s partial acceptance of responsibility and cooperation with prosecutors meant they had allowed a further reduction in their request to a sentence of 40 years, he said.

But he added that “no one should make the mistake that this case is equal to an unqualified guilty plea before an international tribunal.”

Duch, formerly a maths teacher, faces charges of crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture and premeditated murder. A verdict is not expected until early next year.

After the prosecution finished its arguments, bespectacled Duch began his concluding remarks, sitting in the dock and recounting how Khmer Rouge leaders ordered people to be “smashed” during the regime’s internal purges.

“To the survivors I stand by my acknowledgement to all crimes. As for the families of victims, my wish is that you kindly leave your door open for me to make my apologies,” Duch said.

“In order to express my most excruciating remorse I have fully and sincerely cooperated with the court whenever it is needed of me.”

The defence has sought to portray him as merely obeying orders to protect his life and those of his family — while the prosecution has said he was the “personification” of the Khmer Rouge’s “ruthless efficiency”.

The trial has heard how inmates at S-21 — a former high school — had toenails and fingernails pulled out and had the blood drained from their bodies in primitive medical experiments.

Inmates were forced to give false confessions of betraying the regime or working for foreign intelligence services. Only around a dozen of the 15,000 men, women and children taken there are known to have survived.

Most prisoners were taken to a so-called “Killing Field”, an orchard at Choeung Ek, near Phnom Penh, killed by a blow to the base of the neck with a steel club and then had their bellies sliced open.

The prison and the orchard now form a genocide museum.

The Khmer Rouge were toppled by Vietnamese troops and Vietnamese backed Combodian forces in 1979 but continued to fight a civil war for nearly two more decades. Pol Pot died in 1998.

For Cambodians the controversial tribunal, established in 2006 after nearly a decade of negotiations between Cambodia and the United Nations, is the last chance to find justice for the Khmer Rouge’s crimes.

Duch has been detained since 1999, when he was found working as a Christian aid worker in the jungle, and was formally arrested by the tribunal in July 2007.

The joint trial of four other more senior Khmer Rouge leaders is expected to start in 2011.

This “mublecore” film really suprised me. It probably has to do with the fact that this is really my first time hearing the term “mumblecore” and I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. But gladly that stupid term didn’t change the film much. Something in the movie really resonated with me. I had an easy time relating to a lot of the conversations that they had as well as the awkward situations they were placed in. I thought I might have gotten bored with the constant quick dialogue but I found my attention wholly on what was going on the entire time. I know this type of movie would not be for everyone but if you can relate to the things going on like I could then you would probably really enjoy it.

Over the last few years I have definitely seen a rise in the number of small boutique hotels. Probably because I entered the hotel industry and became more aware, or maybe the trend is such that small boutique is now the vogue?

In London, I believe that Kit Kemp definitely made an impact on the genre of boutique style hotels, as did Anouska Hempel. They both created fantastic hotels, which felt like a home away from home, but with that touch of glamour and all the attention you require and of course deserve! Both very different in style, but each very intimate and luxurious.

Hempel styles the hotel in a very minimalistic design, using “the elegance of simplicity” (as stated on the hotel website). The entrance is very warm and welcoming with carefully selected pieces, all of which are very carefully placed. Walking into the rooms at the Hempel Hotel one does not feel like touching anything; as beautiful as everything is it’s almost a museum like style. Everything looks so perfect and set in its place, it feels like a great dishonour to the designer to move things out of place.

On the contrary Kemp’s style is more homily and involves lots of different pieces being almost effortlessly put together. For me, walking into a Firmdale hotel feels like going to a well-travelled aunt’s home. There are fascinating artefacts, books and fabrics everywhere. Clearly all is very well thought out and designed, from which light to place the wing chair and desk under to what fabric and old china plate can sit together. However, even though the interiors are given all that consideration there is not that feeling of being staged. Clearly I am a fan of Firmdale, but I am afraid of the group churning out another “Soho”, or “Pelham”. This would, in my opinion, defeat Firmdale’s aim of exclusivity.

So boutique hotels, as most other hotels, obviously vary in style. But what makes a hotel boutique? Is it just the design? The attention to detail? The luxury? In my opinion it is probably a combination of all these, plus a small size helps with the intimacy and also the lack of branding. Although on the branding topic there are probably various views. Most hotel groups seem to put their stamp on their property in some way; either by using the similar signage, having the magazines in a certain order on the desk or just having a “style”. However, to keep it boutique and unique, I really think the branding, or that stamp, is not required. This I really believe about the Fox and Anchor; run by the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin group it is a pub with rooms, but I think it can definitely be classified under the boutique hotel category. However, in my opinion the originality of the hotel is let down, not by the design, which is brilliantly thought out and well planned, from door handle to skirting finish, but by the branding. It is all too much like a mini Malmaison or Hotel du Vin; from the similar font on the food menus to the same roll top baths in bedrooms. In my opinion the property should have been standalone and it really would have made even more of a statement, but then these are small details not noticed by many. Nevertheless it is a well designed pub with rooms, a complete transformation from the original building thanks to the in house interior design team in charge! The rooms are all named after areas around the City and with the nearby meat market in mind. Artwork was especially selected to complement each room, so once again a lot of thought went into every detail.

Somewhere warm and cosy and VERY close by, after all those pints!

The opposite to the Fox and Anchor with branding is a very small hotel I only discovered last week – 40 Winks.  The branding here is non- existent and unlike most hotels nowadays (especially in London) there are not even televisions in the room; so really going back to what hotel rooms are for!! This is truly an individual boutique hotel. Designed by David Carter, this hotel has a great collection of diverse objects and has a very intimate feel. This is most probably due to only two bedrooms being available for occupancy. It is an old townhouse, restored fully to ensure that its true grace is flaunted. The collection of furniture has been carefully selected and placed to enhance the beauty of each room and of the furniture itself. The whole style is very bohemian, well suited with being situated in the artsy end of East London.

In front of the looking glass…Do I look beautiful dear? Of course!

So boutique hotels are definitely all the rage now and confidently for the future, but hopefully they won’t turn into “another” one of those hotels and they will be kept unique and most importantly …boutique!
