Afghanistan

Afghanistan got much attention and frankly only two things stood out from the discussion.

Senator Joe Lieberman: The war(s) should be paid for.

and

Liz Cheney: “I think it’s just completely inexcusable that we’ve now had month after month of photo-op out of the White House and no decision.” She said “the President is very fond of saying, “before I commit troops I’m going to think very carefully about it,” somebody in the White House needs to remind him he’s already committed troops. We’ve got American men and women in Afghanistan today.

Now, personally, I don’t think the tenor of Cheney’s blast was warranted. It’s not just about the number of troops on the ground but the strategy and direction. Committing troops too soon could be even more dangerous. Moreover, I think it’s entirely unclear that sending more troops will make it safer for troops already in Afghanistan and not just widen our risk exposure. Also, the President did commit more troops to Afghanistan earlier this year.

That said, it’ll be devastating to the president if it comes out that our troops in Afghanistan are or have been made more vulnerable without the larger troop increase, the President is sitting on.

I also think the various camps are being incredibly coy about the downsides to their own advocacy and actions. Not to mention overdrawn comparisons are being made to Iraq left and right. The first major difference, Iraq is/was a country. Afghanistan is/was not a country. It’s neither a nation nor a state.

The get out now/sooner crowd just glosses over what it would mean for our allies and the people – particularly the women of Afghanistan were we to leave. Especially as we orient our domestic priorities to spend on jobs, education, healthcare, etc… I mean those are all needed things but perhaps less important in the global scheme of things that ensuring tens of millions have basic access to education, freedom of religion, etc…

I’m really, really put off by the callous almost selfish disregard for Afghani citizens demonstrated by those who think we’ve been there too long.

The double down crowd is crowing about the success of Iraq and the necessary nature of a commitment to the Afghani people without recognizing the extraordinary cost and sacrifice that entails and the lower likelihood of success. They also, I think overstate the importance of an Al-Qaeda free Afghanistan to our national security.

Asia Trip

I accidentally caught about five minutes of Bill Kristol and Mara Liasson going on about wretched and terrible the President’s trip to China was. Honestly, it was ugly and mean-spirited. Most of all it was uninformed and stupid. Conservative commentators who talk about how we need to approach China and how the President is weak, yada, yada, yada are just willingly ignoring how they cheered similar things when President Bush was doing them. They all talk about how effectively bad conceptions of American weakness are but never talk about how ineffective American criticism of regimes is. Can they name one. One single country in the history of the world that has crumbled or become more free because we stonewalled or chastised them into accepting our version of democracy and freedom?

No, because it hasn’t happened. Yet, that doesn’t stop conservative commentators from going on as if moral pontificating were effective policy and morally good enough to feel smug about one’s self. Gag.

I think, if a criticism is to be found, it is from Bob Reich on the This Week roundtable that the President’s foreign policy team needs to more carefully consider his presence and the optics of strength and weakness. The fundamental relationship between China and America is the same this week as it was last week and the week before but perceptions of weakness and strength matter and while I might go on about how idiotic commentators are being about it here in America. Impressions of the President by foreign leaders and governments do matter.

1 – Contexte de l’activité

France Telecom dispose d’un service de « help-desk » de 150 personnes réparties sur 3 plateaux en France et en charge du support de premier niveau pour les postes bureautiques du personnel de France Telecom. Le parc de postes est d’environ 100 000.  Dans le cadre de cette activité de support, France Telecom a mis en place une cellule de pilotage des 3 plateaux help-desk qui a pour rôle :

le pilotage à chaud de l’activité (prévisions, planification des ressources et supervision temps réel)

le pilotage à froid de l’activité (analyses du fonctionnement, des signalisations et des retours clients)

la gestion d’activités transverses (process qualité, formations des experts, mise en place d’outils, mise à disposition de documentation nécessaire à l’activité)

Cette cellule est composée de 5 personnes pour l’animation des 3 plateaux.

2 – Objet du stage

Faire l’analyse de l’ensemble de la documentation existante auprès des différents acteurs du domaine

niveau 1, helpk-desk bureautique

niveau 2, experts des back Office bureautique

niveau 3, maîtrise d’œuvre

Proposer une organisation de mise à disposition centralisée des documents en concertation avec les différents acteurs répondant aux besoins et spécificités de chacun

Travailler en collaboration avec un chef de projet technique qui proposera des solutions de mise en œuvre selon les préconisations du documentaliste

The Winchester Mystery House was bought by Sarah Winchester, as a normal house, around 1884. She was the widow of William Wirt Winchester, who had been the second president of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and only son of the company’s owner. When he died, at the age of 44 in 1881, she was grief stricken. Having already lost her only child to marasmus in the 1860s. Believing her family to be cursed she consulted a medium who, it is said, told her that the spirits of the people who had been killed by the winchester rifle were many and they wanted vengeance. The medium told her she had to move west, she originally lived in Connecticutt, buy a house and begin continuous construction on it so that she and the spirits could live in it. She was never to stop building on the house and if she did, she would die. She followed what she had been told, buying the house and beginning work on it immediately. She had an income, from her husband’s death and owning half of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, that gave her the rough equivalent of $22,000 (£13,262) a day. The house was originally an 8 room farmhouse that stood on 162 acres in what is now San Jose, California. Construction work began on the house and continued for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the next 38 years. When Sarah Winchester died in 1922 at the age of 83 work on the house immediately ceased. The house itself is set out in such an odd way that certain doors open onto walls and has staircases that lead nowhere. It is claimed this was ordered by Mrs Winchester so that the spirits would get lost in the house. Staff also needed maps to find their way around. There are around 160 rooms including 40 bedrooms, 10,000 window panes, 7 chimneys, 2 basements, 3 elevators and 2 ballrooms. The number 13 also features heavily in the house. It once reached 7 storeys high but following damage in the 1906 earthquake it is now 4 storeys. The total cost of the building work has been estimated at around $5.5 million ($70 million;  £42,079,285 in 2008) After her death she left the contents of the house to her niece. It reportedly took the removers eight trucks a day for six and a half weeks to empty it. Today it is a tourist attraction, it is said to be haunted, and is open every day except for Christmas. So, I have this habit of pretending like I have free time and filling that imaginary time with all sorts of projects. As though work, school, and life in general aren’t enough, I fill my “spare” time with things like writing articles for Examiner.com, writing this blog, doing various theatrical things, and other various activities.

My newest project is re-reading Shakespeare’s entire canon. I’m talking plays, poems, and sonnets. Anything he had a hand in, I’m going to read. I’m giving myself one week – just in case school gets crazy or work prevents me from reading or I forget or something – but hopefully I’ll be able to get through all of it faster than that. Ideally, I’d like to have read everything before this 365 project is over.

I’ll be starting with the comedies, going in alphabetical order for no other reason than the fact that my OCD says I have to pick some order, and alphabetical is as good as any. So starting tomorrow, I’ll be reading All’s Well That Ends Well and reporting back with my thoughts…wish me luck on this possibly insane endeavor!

Following up on some earlier reports about Lieberman and DADT repeal earlier, the Hill, Blade, and Advocate are all reporting on Representative Barney Frank’s assertion that a DADT repeal will be folded into next year’s defense reauthorization.

Frank said,

“The House will take up and the Senate will take up ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal,” he said. “That will again, like hate crimes, even more so, will have to be done, I believe, in the context of the defense authorization. You can’t do the standalone bill. It belongs in the defense authorization.”

and

“Military issues are always done as part of the overall authorization bill,” Frank said, insisting that this has been the strategy for overturning the policy all along. “’Don’t ask, don’t tell’ was always going to be part of the military authorization.”

So there are a couple of optical things here that are worth commenting on. Namely, the most politically necessary quote in the article, “The Administration is totally committed to this and has been from the beginning,“

The White House needed this and it needed this now. After two years of campaigning, Team Obama went from fierce advocate for the gays to marginally better and slightly less insulting than the Bush team in about six-seven months. I think the lack of enthusiasm on the left has Democrats worried and, frankly, they need the gays. They need their money and their energy. So you can bet looking at 2010 and the immediately subsequent Presidential re-election campaign, this is the start of their “remind our constituencies why they need us/have supported us” campaign.

First stop, gays. I’d bet money that it’s a race to the environmental lobby and hispanics next. Throw in some anti-Wall street populism and the Democrats will be firing up their base by early next summer. The flip-side of this or its complimentary campaign is to convince people that the Republicans are scary and out to get them, which is basically the GOP playbook from 2002-2004, with some slight substitutions.

That said, a DADT repeal, domestic partner legislation, and ENDA will be an effective trifecta, throw in a gay marriage expansion in at least one state by 2011 and come re-election time, LGBT groups will affectionately love the Obamas the way African-Americans loved Bill Clinton in the 90’s. This, of course, assumes that Senate Democrats remember this is 2010 and not 1994.

The timing here is important for a reason beyond electoral proximity. There’s a wide, grey line between just what I needed and too little, too late. The carelessness of the administration’s treatment of gays and lesbians was running out the clock on gratefulness and approaching too little, too late. In fairness, they did inherit serious problems. However, that explanation only holds as long as people think you’re preoccupied. When less urgent issues find their way onto your docket and you actively insult a group, a perfectly valid explanation looks more and more like a poorly-crafted excuse.

Let me emphasize, I’m not concern trolling here, just highlighting that Barney Frank just did the administration a huge favor because the administration was having optical issues – many of their own making with gays despite the “everything’s fine” prostrations of HRC. Optically, the administration was headed towards less benefit from action rather than much. Politically, the sweet spot for DADT repeal passed and now the White House is going to have to wait till after this Afghanistan kerfuffle gets dealt with. So they get, Barney Frank to tell people that it will happen at a more opportune time and to reveal their secret plan.

Which is funny because there was no reason to make the plan secret in the first place.  None. The President and his staffers had made very clear, unspun commitments on this issue. Which makes me personally skeptical that there was some secret plan to repeal DADT in the first place.

I would guess that originally they wanted to do it at a time of benefit to themselves, probably in the summer or late spring. However, optically it would look radical right before pushing liberal healthcare reforms and the military was not on board. So they shelved it until gaining the respect of the military establishment and wrangling DoD into line. Smart.

As for disappointment, I only have two things. First, the likeliness that Democrats will throw something anathema to Republicans into the defense reauthorization so as to force the R’s to vote against repeal. It’s smart politics but I’d like to see an honest vote so we can really see how Congress would vote on this one issue. The second is that I think a separate bill for repeal is the stronger symbolic statement. There are plenty of executive and judicial rebukes of  discrimination. This would be a momentous legislative one. Not to mention it would open up the bill to restore benefits to those directly affected by the legislation. That said, I’ll be pleased when it passes. In this case the good is great and the perfect can wait.

When living in a small town, you often live in the shadows of legends, or hero’s. Those who have made such an impact on the town, you will forever see photos, or hear their names mentioned.

Well for me, I never realized how much one person made such an impact on a town, more then Nick Brandemarti. I didn’t know Nick, and I feel like I was one of the unfortunate ones. But attending West Deptford High School, I was surrounded by his legacy. From teachers, former students, and athletics. By the end you almost felt like you knew him.

He was loved by all who knew him, and even by those who didn’t know him. “He was always smiling,” said West Deptford Police Officer Sean McKenna. “He was never in a bad mood.”

Brandemarti set the school record for most rushing yards in a game (347), and rumor has it, that record will most likely stay for a while, because West Deptford High football coach Clyde Folsom has allegedly stated that if anyone gets close to breaking the record, he will get taken out.

“The kid was a horse,” said McKenna, remembering him as an athlete. “He was a powerful running back, and just barrel kids over.”

The days after 9/11 when the country was still at a lose for words, the feeling in West Deptford was no different. People wondered what was going on, who was responsible, and: did anyone hear from Nick?

This week in my Q&A. I will sit down with Nick Brandemarti senior. It is my honor to talk with him, and I’m truly interested to hear his story.

Missions

- Recherches iconographiques, contacts téléphoniques avec les agences d’architecture pré-sélectionnées, enregistrement des données dans la photothèque du CAUE gérée avec le logiciel Alexandrie, gestion des droits d’auteurs des images

- En partenariat avec la Maison de l’architecture, le stagiaire travaillera au sein du centre de documentation du CAUE et sera en lien avec la documentaliste

I know this article is a month old but it’s just so amazingly well put, well said, and on point. Salon’s Glenn Greenwald on gay issues, the “fringe left” and the liberal veal pen.

Highlights:

The only thing remarkable about the comments Harwood passed on is that anyone would be surprised by them.  In that regard, the furor over Obama’s complete inaction on gay issues vividly illustrates the same elements that shape political controversies in virtually every other area — from war to civil liberties to health care and beyond:

• Pretty words and inspiring pageantry from the President, accompanied by endless inaction or contradictory policies;
• Hordes of people who believe in their heart of hearts that the administration is led by such a nice, just and likable man that it couldn’t possibly be guilty of anything worse than a little benign political calculation (just as the evangelical, Texas-swaggering Bush did for Red State loyalists, the urbane, charming and highly intelligent Obama possesses all the cultural markers of a good and decent person for Blue State loyalists, and thus simply can’t be capable of anything malicious or destructive — there’s a reason Bill Maher tried to remind liberals:  ”He’s your president, not your boyfriend”);
• Organizations (exemplified by the truly dreadful HRC) that suck funding out of progressives and serve as liberal validators of administration conduct whose overaching devotion is to the Democratic Party and the administration rather than the causes they claim to promote (fortunately, civil liberties groups are the exception, as they have remained steadfast, unapologetic, independent and principled in harshly criticizing Obama); and,
• Deeply personalized scorn directed at those who try to hold Democrats and the Obama administration accountable — since they’re the ones who control the levers of government with huge majorities — rather than devote all their energies to the cheap and easy partisan task of ridiculing and blaming a marginalized, impotent conservative movement which is a small minority and currently wields no power in Washington.

I’m 100% for AMERICAblog’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Give campaign, especially after reading their why and examples list.

In general, I’m not one for protesting and what not. I’m almost certainly not one for single-issue voting/challenges. However, in this case, I think this is a community of the left that has long been taken for granted by Democrats and have little to show for it other than the unprovable counterfactual that things would be worse otherwise. Cold comfort doesn’t do it justice.

Personally, I’m incensed at the “internet left fringe” comment hurled at the NEM from a month ago.

I’d also be a bit more sympathetic to the political struggles of passing pro-gay legislation if, in fact, things other than gay marriage weren’t solidly supported.
