It was raining, which scrapped outside shooting. And frankly, it will probably rain on the day of shoot. So here are my ideas for turning this into an indoor shoot.

Here’s my house

Place the keg in the kitchen, and have a separate scene in the living room

Here’s the same shot with a one second burn to bring in the ambient light

(note the light at the top of the stairs, back of the kitchen, lamp)

and another angle

Thanks Caitlyn for all the help!

Cet automne, j’ai pris un gros plan du dernier local apparemment ouvert de cet immeuble. Je vous le livre tout de même, d’abord parce que je préfère celui-ci et pour jouer au jeu des 7 erreurs.

AKA “Fuji Doesn’t Want Our Business“

No, they haven’t discontinued the emulsion, but they’ve made it more expensive (and less GREEN) now by forcing us to buy only 10-sheet boxes, which effectively now makes this film 20% more expensive. But I’m stubborn and cannot be forced into anything. So, Fuji, because you’re making it hard to do business with you, I’ll just do less business with you. You first took away my Acros Quickloads, and now this. I’m left with no choice other than to switch emulsions and purchase from your competitor. My color negative film from here on out will be Kodak Portra 160NC.

B&H is already out of the 50-sheet boxes, but you can still find it at other online retailers.

Please, please, Fuji: don’t kill my Astia.

I have been kind of depressed here in Seattle because there are no labs that process 4×5 color.

I have been kind of depressed here in Seattle because there are no labs that process 4×5 color. What the hell! Even po-dunk Portland has a lab!

This throws a big wrench in my plans for Bunker Hill. So here is my thought. With a conventional 4×5 of the house this is the image with my 65mm Grandagon:

Using fuji FP100b45. Ah it looks so good, and can be framed so well.

Here is my idea, use the 6×7 back on the camera

And shift it back and forth to create a stitched image on 120 film

I made a mask for the polaroid pack film back that would mask of a matched 6×7 area. This is what it would potentially look like with two options:

#1 Vertical 6×7 which should give about a 12×7 stitched image

Or the very panoramic horizontal 14×6

An added benefit to the horizontal is that, if set up properly, the images could appear side by side on the same roll of film and therefor keep the continuity of the image.

I shot a roll of 120 in all of these different configurations–look for the results here next week.

Some came to strike it rich; some came to escape the city; some came to get away from others. All became too familiar with the trials and tribulations of living on the desert – it ain’t easy. The money runs out, the water runs out, or the patience runs out, and what’s left long behind are the forgotten possessions and stories of those who tried but failed.

A few years back, during the midst of the summer monsoon on the Mojave Desert, I used the often useful WWW (indeed, there is more to it than just Facebook and Twitter) to watch radar and satellites to determine the locations of the fattest thunderheads. And then I went chasing.

Some have assumed that this photograph is a composite. No way! This was the scene as I found it; I have not digitally added or changed the clouds. The unusual lighting adds in some part to the suspicion, I suspect, as the entire foreground is in open shade, while the cloud structure receives full sun. This beautiful Cumulonimbus cloud structure was fortuitously “parked” behind the abandoned structure and building in volume, and the addition of the Joshua trees on the left side made me excited (the desert equivalent of an old oak tree in the yard!). I used my 4×5″ large format view camera, black and white film, and an orange filter. The final look of this photograph came at the printing stage, where I turned the sky black for maximum impact and imparted the overall look and feel I was after.

The image is Thomas Trundle’s Battle of Bunker Hill. Though I have not quite thought out every part of this image it will involve America vs the EU, or Americana vs the Arty hip people (of which I have to count myself of course). Not sure.

Here are the test polaroids for the back ground

To call Francis Ford a fixture of the Milwaukee photo-culture would be a serious understatement. Frank, a Milwaukee native, has been photographing for nearly 40 years, always creating unique portraits in a style all his own. Having (in my mind) made a mark with his skillful large-format portraits, Frank has very, very successfully made the transition to digital capture.

Frank currently has a show on display at Milwaukee’s Cedar Gallery –what he calls “The Lifeboat Show.” I was lucky enough to meet with Frank recently, and to make his portrait at the gallery.

A couple quotes from our morning’s conversation…
+(re: Photoshop)..it can get you date..(really) Photoshop can do anything.”
+(re: the digital transition)…”a friend described it like this…digital technology is the train and it’s pulling away from you at the station. You can chase the train, maybe almost keep pace with it, but you’re never gonna fully get on it.”
+(re: darkroom printing)…”a (photo-)print in a (darkroom)tray is still a romantic thing. Computers are not a romantic thing, in any way, shape or form.”
Simply put, Frank rocks.

A prologue to a new chapter in my life, the return to England. It has been two months since I arrive

A prologue to a new chapter in my life, the return to England. It has been two months since I arrived back home after five years on the island of Tanegashima and surprisingly, the transition back into English culture has been relatively smooth. There are times of course, that I wish I was back in Japan but they are becoming less frequent as I re-discover the country I once knew.

I began looking at things in a new light. Carpets and wallpaper seemed alien to me after living in an apartment where tatami and fusuma were the norm. Chopsticks and soya sauce have been replaced with cutlery and HP sauce. Rubbish bins with their wonderful green lining are a novelty – everyone seemed to take their litter home with them in Japan.

As I begin my new life back in England, I also begin a new phase in my photography – large format! Unlike my use of 35mm and medium formats, shooting with an old view camera is a slow and meditative process and one that I have fallen in love with. The below photographs were taken with a Graflex Speed Graphic and an old WWII lens that was originally designed to take aerial shots of enemy targets!

A new environment for sure, but my passion for film photography hasn’t wavered and expect lots of new work here on my photoblog. I am keen to exhibit my work and meet fellow photographers both on the Wirral and in Liverpool. If you are reading this and would like to meet up for a cuppa and some photos, please get in touch!

A day after the onslaught of typhoon Ondoy in Manila, I decided to take a look at the devastation it left behind. I went to visit the system of rivers that swelled up in and around Marikina, Cainta and Pasig. I brought my 4×5 along and 5 film holders loaded with enlarging paper.

Everything was still quiet. The rescue operation was still going on and the survivors were taking their well-deserved rest in the evacuation centers. I went to Marikina River, the Manggahan floodway and the Pasig rivers which are near where I live.

I took these pictures which belie the destruction they have caused the day before.

Titlis (3,238 m) is a mountain in the Urner Alps of Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland, overlooking Engelberg and is famous as the site of the world’s first revolving cable car. The cable car system connects Engelberg to the top through four principal stages (Gerschnialp, Trübsee, Stand and Kleintitlis (3,020 m). The last part of cable car way leads above the glacier. In Kleintitlis, it is possible to visit a glacier cave.

Theme of Rant/Suggestion: 2 parts – Sidebar & Icons in menu Have you been watching Nokia W

Theme of Rant/Suggestion: 2 parts – Sidebar & Icons in menu

Have you been watching Nokia World 09 Online? Perhaps you’re actually there? Some big announcements of devices we’ve already heard of (Booklet 3G /N97 mini/n900), and some new ones too (X6, X3).

But something a lot more interesting for current S60 5th edition owners is that a new software update for the N97 maybe shrinking the fat sidebar that you see in menus and applications . I’ve ranted about it a few times (e.g. here and here).

However, this is all only in Ovi Maps Beta. [For Comparison: Ovi Maps 3.0] You can still see from the video that the old fat sidebar is still there.

Nevertheless, this is a step in the right direction as to how the sidebar (for the menu/all applications/all parts of the UI) could look. Instead of something obtrusive, they could minimize it into icons or just shrink the font.

Ovi Maps new layout - blends in better with S60 5th edition UI. Note status icons.

- screenshots from the Ovi Maps Beta Video

Is this a sign of what a future firmware could bring to the S60 5th edition’s appearance? The current sidebar (especially in landscape) consumes way too much space than necessary.

Out of the 640×360 screen, in the menu, users only get an application size of 502×288 (at least according to PhoneInfo)

[Note: How icons appear in Landscape with S60 5th edition. So much screen is wasted!]

Either shrink it down as we’ve seen in Ovi Maps Beta or better yet, ideally like digia web browser’s controls, give the option to show/hide so that users can have full screen and possibly even have a 4×5 grid, or at least a 3×5 grid of icons (see later).

This may cause a problem with how icons rotate from landscape to portrait as they reorder themselves into a new position on the grid. Why can’t the icons just stay where they are and then rotate on that fixed point?

How icon rotation should work in S60 5th edition

Start: Portrait

Rotate…

Icons rotate about their own axis. Not being re-ordered.

[note: just to demonstrate how icons should rotate on their own axis. Sidebar and status icons obviously have to be sorted out]

Much like how photos rotate in Nokia Photo Browser – all at a fixed axis – no moving around to a new location (unless more photos are introduced). This is beneficial in that you always know where an icon is located. It hasn’t been moved about after switching orientation. (Well, that’s just for me anyway, I understand that others will like things as it is.)

Eventually they could even add a new row with the extra space. As for status icons like battery/connection/time, like in Ovi Maps Beta, it could be superimposed at the bottom (see first screenshot from Ovi Maps)

[Note, just to demonstrate 3x5 grid of icons. Status icons (reception/battert etc) and sidebar need sorting out. They could even shrink the icons a bit if it seems too cluttered.]

If you have more icons than can be displayed on a page, then can’t we just implement side-swiping? (This would be up/down swiping in portrait)

This started as a mistake.

I bought a 4×5 camera from eBay. I saw the pictures, and the read the descriptions. It was being sold very cheap, a Seneca b. A very old field camera. The lens is also a Seneca, very old and has very small full aperture, f/8. It arrived quite speedily and was delivered to my doorsteps. A very lucky transaction. Until I opened the box and discovered that it is not a 4×5 but a 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 camera. It was a beatiful camera, indeed, but I thought I could never use it, because one of the most difficult film holders to find are the 3×4s. Then I remembered that once, I got hold of a bunch of assorted film holders which I left with Jay Javier, so I picked them up one day and found out that only three holders were working. That means 6 shots. I could go on a walkabout with just 6 shots. That means I will have to think a lot, before I shoot.

Here are three test shots.

I loaded them with 3×4 sheets of enlarging paper. Exposed using a very low ASA rating, and developed with D-72.

This experiment is nothing new. What I find interesting with this technique is that I can use an ordinary flatbed scanner to scan large format negatives (4×5, 5×7 and 8×10). If I were using film negatives, I would have to resort to more expensive options like buying a large format negative scanner, or use a medium format negative scanner to scan the film by sections and then stitching them together.

I find this simpler, although I can’t use a red filter for better-looking skies.

I loaded my Speed Graphic film holders with enlarging paper and exposed using a rating of ASA 25. After a couple of tests, I learned that the paper is more responsive to fluorescent light than incandescent. This is what came out after developing th paper on D-72 for 1 minute, with a dilution of 1:2.

I scanned the paper negative and inverted it using Mac’s Preview editor. This is what came out.

Here are a few more shots.

.

.

My first day light photo using the same technique. With a Nikkor wide-angle lens.

.

.

.

.

In the next photos, I used studio lights, and an old Anastigmat lens. At full aperture of f/4.5, the exposure was 30 seconds.

Alan and Jim – Under Tent

This is really my first attempt at a psuedo-self-portrait with the 4×5. My partner Jim has always mentioned that we never have a large format portrait of us, until, the moment finally arrived.

It just so happened to be a final hurrah weekend with close Bear friends outside of Rochester. The state park we visited hosted a wedding tent. I knew in my head that I wanted us to be holding hands, but what I didn’t realize was the subconscious image that was really burned into my head.

Kodak killed their Readyloads in 2008. This means that the hiking/backpacking large format black and white photographer is now faced with having to carry multiple film holders, extra sheet film, a changing tent, and an empty box to change out film during hikes and backpacks. What were they thinking?

I’m disappointed, but it’s not the end of the world. Unfortunately for Fuji, this now means that Ilford gets ALL of my black and white business. And before the hell-bent digital camera crusaders blurt out “FILM IS DEAD!”, let me assure you that many emulsions are still available in all formats (with new emulsions still being released). The loss here is specific to those who prefer the convenience and weight-savings of carrying black and white packet film over multiple film holders on long hikes and backcountry saunters.

It would appear that nothing can really be done about this, as many a letter and email (mine included) regarding previous business decisions have fallen on deaf ears over at Fuji. Your choices are to complain (likely without results) or start shopping for a new emulsion. Best of luck either way.

You can read more about this topic over at the Large Format Photography Forum (an excellent resource for large format photographers).

UPDATE, Nov. 16, 2009: reader Doug asks if I have found any alternative to using multiple 4X5 film holders. There used to be more than one alternative, but from an availability perspective, only ONE choice now exists: the Grafmatic sheet film holder. Although they are long out of production, these are readily available on eBay for $50-70 or so. I own one, but have only ever used it for demonstration purposes during my Introduction to Large Format Photography workshops. The operation is just slightly clunky, and I’m not fond of the fine metal shavings that are produced by friction/moving parts within the holder. Fuji made the short-lived Quick Change Holder (which had plastic instead of metal septums), but it is no longer available and I have never seen one on eBay. For me, there are currently no decent alternatives, so I’ll be sticking with multiple film holders for now.
