Another photo of Butterfly Milkweed. I shot this wide open, very late in the afternoon on a sunny day a few weeks past the Summer Solstice. The result … surreal colors & an unearthly bokeh.

Also, yesterday I mentioned that I’m considering designing a website for my photography. I’d offer prints for sale in various sizes with a choice of different types of photographic paper. I’m excited about the prospect and will tell you a bit more about it in tomorrow’s post.

It took some time but friday night I was finally able to unbox my new pieces of gear: My precious Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G and the Nikon SB-600 had arrived!

I’ve not yet fully tested. But I’ve been photography my parents and my sister with this lens and flash all the time. I knew that an external flash would make a great difference, but I was still surprised. I really love how you can use walls to bounce light indirectly on your subject. And in combination with the 50mm everything looks so incredibly sharp. Seriously, this lens is soo sharp and soo fast.

What a great weekend .

It’s that time of the year again. Everyone is pulling out the Christmas lights and decorations. All the locals are getting their holiday shopping done. Everyone is out and about in town just to enjoy the pretty lights and have hot beverages. Life is such a clatter. I love it.

The Christmas Market is finally up and happening downtown here in Ansbach, Germany. The smell of grilled sausages and hot milk beverages fill the air. This year is my second year to be here for Christmas only this time I can actually enjoy it and see more of it. I’m pretty excited about getting my cup of hot sweets and buying some authentic German hand made ornaments. This year, I’ll be able to experience the holidays to the fullest. I’m ready.

Saturday night my husband and I headed downtown to just walk around and enjoy the scenes. I got in some shots of the Christmas market and what not in. I was able to actually use my new 50mm. I love it to the fullest. Just for now, I’ll post two of the first photos of the night.

I absolutely love Germany this time of the year. It’s my favorite holiday and Germany does it up the right way. I’ll be posting more photos and such periodically. I hope you guys enjoy them and I hope your holidays are swell.

I wanted to shoot something with natural light this evening and this caught my eye. Since it’s night and our kitchen is dimly lit I had to shoot at high ISO and a large aperture. The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is a decent little lens for the money, but I don’t really find the results usable until it is stopped down to f/2.8. It’s relatively sharp there, but still needs a bit of sharpening in post processing. I quite like the shallow depth of field in this shot.

This photo was taken approximately half a year ago when Spring was in all its glory. No textures, filters or layers have been applied to this image. I love the way this shot turned out.

The wife and I took a hike in Tilden Park last weekend and came across this old car in the middle of nowhere. The closest road was about 1000 vertical feet up a cliff, so its obvious that the passengers didn’t survive the plunge. Relying on the model of the car, this incident happened long before I was even born and it still made me pause and think about the lives that were lost. I could imagine a family trying to escape the summer heat of the Central Valley to enjoy a day on Lake Anza. In the back seat children tightly grip their floaties in anticipation as the smell of a cooler, moist environment replaces the stench of the valley in summer. The next thing they know the whole family, as they say in the medical field, are expired.

I guess the moral of the story is to enjoy every moment of this life. You never know when your demise may come, leaving in your wake a photo op for hikers on a long winding trail in the woods.

As always, shot on the T1i/500d with a 50mm 1.8 lens.

I’ve been thinking about how rarely I appear in photos. I’m always taking pictures of other people.

To my shame, pictures of me in family photographs fade out at about aged 8, because I went through a phase of pulling faces at the camera. So there is very little of me from then on. Which is a bit sad really.

I took this picture in front of my sofa in a flat on Ealing Common (I would have been about 34).I’m wondering if I’ve changed or not.

Was it supposed to be sharp or not? I don’t know.

Recently I had bought a Nissin Di622 for strobing purpose from Mitmivec – Eric. To summarize it, the flash has a rather slow recharge speed. It is good to use for strobe, but not really for event covering. As usual, I still prefer to have the own party flashes to stay on the camera’s hot shoe. Else, it is fine to trigger via Radio Trigger or Optical trigger.

Other than that, to fullfill my needs, I had DIY some color film that can work as gel and to be used on the flash. That was how I create these two photos. By using the color films on the top of stofen. The ingredients are listed in the DIY GEL for flashes.

As usual, the setup will be shared. This time I had draw it into a pcs of paper and scan into computer. First it is easier to keep track on what I had did before, and also I may need similar setup in future. Here the setup for this round and please forgive my ugly drawing:

Note: Both flash doesn’t really direct flash to the Chivas. To avoid reflection, it is somehow the feather light hit on the chivas.

Since the gel is on top of stofen, there are still some white color flash to be produced. The reflector is to reflect some of these lights to fill some lights on the Chivas.

Please feel free to comment on the setup. You may have better idea and help me to do better. Thanks in advanced
