Actress Mischa Barton has reportedly been placed under involuntary psychiatric hold at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The reports come a day after Barton called police to her L.A. home for help with a “health problem.” Details on her condition were not released, though LAPD officer April Harding confirmed that authorities had removed Barton from her home. “We assisted her with a medical issue and removed her from her home,” Harding said, adding that no paramedics were involved.

A rep for the 23-year-old tells People magazine the police were called to help protect Barton from the media while she was transported to her doctor.

Sources now tell Access Hollywood that the former OC star has been put on a 5150 hold, which means police can hold a person involuntarily in a psychiatric ward if they present a danger to themselves or others, or suffer from a mental disorder. The same hold was placed on Britney Spears twice in 2008.

A rep for Barton says the actress will not attend the world premiere of her new film Homecoming Thursday night in NYC.

Although hair stylist Kim Vo recently insinuated that Britney might perform based on the number of hair styles he was preparing for her, Britney’s manager told Ryan Seacrest this morning that “Britney Spears will not be performing at the VMAs this year. Oops…the court did it again! A judge decided this week to extend the conservatorship overseeing Britney Spears’ financial and legal decisions. The conservatorship, headed up by Brit’s dad Jamie, is expected to continue until at least until the end of October and possibly through December 2008. In short, Brit remains a Slaaaaaave 4 Her Dad!

On Wednesday, Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky and her father were arrested for an alleged violent airport altercation in Turks and Caicos. Nikki was charged with assault, while her father is facing charges for causing bodily injury. Nikki’s anticipated defense: “You Can’t Stop The Beat…ing!“

And yesterday, the LA City Council entertained hearings to address ongoing problems with the paparazzi. Speaking out against any further regulations, LAPD Chief William Bratton implied that celebrities are to blame, stating: “As you notice, since Britney started wearing clothes and behaving, Paris is out of town, not bothering anybody anymore, thank God, and evidently Lindsay Lohan has gone gay, we don’t have much of an issue.” No joke needed.

Sam Lutfi says he’s not Toxic!

Because you are a faithful Popsquire follower, you remember that Britney Spears’ father, Jamie, was successful in obtaining a temporary restraining order against Lutfi on February 1. Since then, the order has been extended three times and is scheduled for a hearing tomorrow, along with the conservatorship trial.

According to E! News, a Lutfi insider says that he intends to fight any attempt to make the order permanent. “If they want to go to trial, he will go to trial,” the source said. “He did nothing wrong.”

That’s not what Lynne and Jamie Spears told the court back in February! In Lynne’s declaration signed under penalty of perjury, she told the court, among other things, that Sam drugged Britney, hid her cell phones, and disabled her cars. Click here to read more from Lynne’s declaration.

Popsquire’s prediction: If the Spears family offers Lutfi enough loot, he will stay away.

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have settled their family law dispute! According to E! Online, K-Fed gets sole legal and physical custody of their sons, while Britney will have visitation rights.

Popsquire’s Pop Quiz: What is the difference between “legal” and “physical” custody?

Legal custody refers to the ability to make major decisions — e.g., medical, educational, religious — about the course of the children’s lives. Physical custody simply refers to the parent with whom the kids primarily live.

Popsquire’s perspective…

Although the parties are awaiting court approval, there shouldn’t be a problem. All courts, especially family law courts, encourage parties to negotiate and settle. Avoiding an emotional, high profile trial is likely a good idea for Britney Spears, especially given her recent history.

Remember, however, that this arrangement does not have to stay in place forever. The parties can mutually agree to a new deal or go back to court to modify the arrangement at any time.

Amid reports that Britney Spears may be filming footage for Madonna’s upcoming Sticky & Sweet tour, Popsquire wants to be a helper.

So, this is a friendly reminder to Madonna and anyone else who is contracting with Britney Spears for services, money, or anything else…

Britney can’t enter into any contracts on her own. As the court-appointed conservatory, Brit’s dad must sign off on any contract because he still is the court-appointed conservatory in charge of her financial and legal decisions.

It’s been a good day for Britney Spears.

Widely respected family law attorney, Laura Wasser, is back on her team, and Los Angeles Commissioner Scott Gordon approved a new visitation/custody agreement that gives Britney overnight visits with her sons.

Los Angeles Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told reporters that “both sides have been very cooperative the past couple of weeks,” and, according to E! Online, the boys are tentatively scheduled to start the overnight visits this Saturday. The next court hearing is July 15.

Popsquire’s perspective…

This is what family law courts are all about. Circumstances change and, as a result, so do custody and visitation arrangements. So long as Britney continues to show progress, we can expect the custody and visitation arrangement to continue to change.

Of course, K-Fed may not want her to re-gain primary custody because that’s when his child support payments could be materially decreased!

In short, it looks like Britney is getting closer and closer to getting back “On Top Of The World.”

Britney Spears left LA this morning on a Delta flight headed for Louisiana to be with her sister, Jamie Lynn, who is expected to give birth imminently.

While other blogs may tell you what she was wearing or feign shock that Britney is flying a commercial plane, Popsquire brings you the pop culture/law collisions…

(1) While Britney was en route to Louisiana, one of her many attorneys sought an extension of time to resolve charges arising out of her alleged August 2007 hit-and-run accident. The new court date is August 11.

(2) Britney’s sons did not travel with her. Due to ongoing visitation/custody restrictions, permission to travel outside the state with them likely would require an agreement from K-Fed and possibly approval by the court.

(3) Popsquire previously explained that Louisiana’s anti-stalking statute presents a much lower standard than California’s anti-stalking laws. So, although this likely won’t stop the photogs from bombarding the Spears family, they have been warned!

Popsquire wishes Jamie Lynn and the rest of the Spears family all the best. Raising a kid at her age and with all the media attention, Jamie Lynn will have to be a “Brave New Girl.” Right, Britney?

The conservatorship overseeing Britney Spears’ finances received court permission today to sell Britney’s house (on left) located in the Summit, a gated community near Beverly Hills.

The court approval comes only days after Britney was spotted looking at this $5.6 million, 7,300-square-foot house in Encino (on right) located closer to K-Fed’s house where Britney’s sons currently live.

The next hearing date for Britney’s conservatorship is July 31. If the parties do not agree to voluntarily extend the conservatorship, the court will set a trial date to decide Britney’s fate.

Coinciding with Britney Spears‘ second appearance on “How I Met Your Mother” tonight, K-Fed’s family law attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, was interviewed during the third hour of The Today Show this morning. In case you have a job and missed it, here’s what Kaplan told Natalie Morales…

1. In response to a question about a future 50/50 custody split, Kaplan explained that we shouldn’t be fixated on percentages. Instead, Kevin’s intent is to have an order or arrangement that allows both parents to participate in their kids’ lives.
2. Although Kaplan will not confirm exactly how much time Britney is currently spending with the kids under the new court order, he did tell Natalie that the new arrangement “reflects improvement.” He also explained that further expansion of visitation will depend on how things progress.
3. Kaplan said he knows nothing about any rumors that Britney and K-Fed are rekindling their relationship.

Popsquire’s perspective…

Popsquire is thrilled for Britney and her family. However, it’s important to realize that custody battles often last years, especially when significant amounts of child support are involved. In California, family law courts typically calculate child support based on the the parents’ income and the percentage of time they have with the kids.

Despite what Kaplan said this morning, he likely may be fixated on the percentage of visitation for this very reason — the more time Britney gets, the less child support Kevin may receive.

According to ExtraTV, Maria Shriver and a friend were overheard at the Beverly Hills Hotel saying that “there ought to be a law against those guys,” referring to the Britney-crazed paparazzi.

Popsquire trusts that California’s First Lady is aware of current laws, but just in case, Popsquire is here to remind everyone — especially the paparazzi — some laws do exist and must be followed, including:

Amid rumors that Sam Lutfi may be looking to sell stories about Britney Spears to various outlets, Popsquire wishes to remind everyone — including Britney, if she gets the internet at UCLA — that confidentiality agreements, if drafted properly, can play an essential role in protecting a celeb’s privacy and/or business interests.

Um, have you seen the declaration filed by Lynne Spears in support of the restraining order granted against Sam Lutfi? Popsquire highly recommends that you read the entire document here, but if you are impatient (like Popsquire), then here are some shocking quotes that will allow you to keep up with the water cooler crowd:

1. “Sam disabled all of Britney’s cars (she has several at her residence).”
2. “Sam had told Britney that she was an unfit mother, a piece of trash and a whore, that she cares more about Adnan, her current boyfriend, than she cares about her kids, and that she does not deserve her kids.”
3. Sam allegedly said to Lynn, “You people throw everyone under the bus, if you don’t listen to me I’m going to make your name sh** in the papers.”
4. “Although Britney has several cell phones, he told us that he disposed of all of the phone chargers and had made the house phones unworkable.”
5. “Sam told Jackie and me that he grinds up Britney’s pills, which were on the counter and included Risperdol and Seroquel. He told us that he puts them in her food and that that was the reason she had been quiet for the last three days (she had been sleeping). He told us that the doctor who is treating her now is trying to get her into a sleep-induced coma so that they could then give her drugs to heal her brain.”
6. “Sam told me, ‘You’d better learn that I control everything. I control Howard Grossman, Britney’s business manager. I control her attorneys and the security guards at the gate.”

This stuff seriously reads like the scripts from Julia Roberts’ “Sleeping With The Enemy” or J-Lo’s “Enough.” If Popsquire could perform voo-doo on Sam Lutfi, he would. Alas, Popsquire’s only power is to invoke the Interpol hit, “Evil,” and send it in his direction.

Feb. 4: (a) After a court challenge, Brit’s dad and independent attorney remain conservators of her estate at least until Feb. 14; and (b) Amid alleged concerns that Sam Lutfi contacted Britney by telephone, the court confirmed that Lutfi is not permitted to contact Britney, even by telephone or email.

Jan. 15: Complaint filed against Dr. Phil, arising out of his hospital visit with Britney.

Jan. 21: Britney attends deposition for approximately 2.5 hours.

Jan. 23: Britney unsuccessfully seeks to modify court’s no-visitation order. Britney’s lawyers withdraw motion to be relieved as counsel, previously scheduled for Feb. 4.

Jan. 31: Britney is placed on another 5150 hold, this time at UCLA Medical Center.

Feb. 1: Britney’s dad and independent lawyer were appointed as conservators of her estate; Court issues temporary restraining order against Sam Lutfi, prohibiting him from getting near Britney.

Feb. 3: Britney’s 5150 hold is extended by 14 days.

Upcoming…

Feb. 19: Court hearing regarding custody of children. This date was set a while ago, so Popsquire wonders if it will be vacated, especially given current circumstances.

Apr. 9: Trial begins.

Popsquire trusts you know that Britney Spears’ 5150 hold has been extended by 14 days. She will remain at UCLA unless the doctor releases her or she successfully contests the extension in court.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Britney is locked away without any rights. Instead, she maintains all of the following rights while on the 5150 hold:

1. Religious freedom and practice;
2. Participation in publicly supported education;
3. To be free from abuse or neglect;
4. Refusal of medications except in emergency situations where danger to life is present or by court order;
5. To wear their own clothes;
6. To have visitors;
7. Access to private phone conversations;
8. Ability to speak with a Patient’s Rights Advocate;
9. To go outside for exercise and leisure (usually in a fenced area); and
10. Access their money in amounts for small purchases.

Popsquire previously informed you in this post that Britney’s parents were scheduled to appear in court to establish a conservatorship. According to TMZ, the hearing produced two results:

1. The court established a conservatorship to manage Britney’s financial matters, placing Britney’s dad and an independent attorney in the driver’s seat; and
2. The court issued a restraining order against Sam Lufti, barring him from visiting Britney for 22 days.

Popsquire is pleased that someone is stepping in to take care of Britney, yet still wonders whether the Spears parents will seek a conservatorship to make medical decisions.

According to TMZ, Britney Spears’ parents are scheduled to attend a court hearing today at 1:30 pm to establish a “conversatorship,” which would allow them to make medical and financial decisions on Britney’s behalf.

When a developmental or mental impairment limits an adult’s capacity to exercise her rights, a conservatorship can enable the parent to act on behalf of the person subject to periodic reviews by the court.

A conservatorship is crucial to medical treatment. For example, the “informed consent” of a patient is required before most medical treatments. If the patient is an adult with a developmental disability, parental consent frequently is not accepted unless the parent is also the patient’s conservator.
