An inverted chord means that you’ve moved the root of a chord to some upper position, leaving a note other than the root as the lowest sounding note. It’s a really great device that will add colour to your musical palette. But chord inversions have to be treated with a bit of care; randomly opting for an inversion can lead to a chord progression that sounds a bit disorganized.

A triad is a three-note chord that includes a root, a third and a fifth. For example, in C major, a C triad is comprised of a C, E and G played simultaneously. With the root on the bottom, you get this triad in its most stable position.

By moving the root upward and away from its bottom position, you now have the 3rd of the chord as the lowest-sounding note (C/E). This triad, called a first inversion triad, is slightly less stable, in the sense that we usually don’t end musical phrases with this type of chord. Ends of phrases need the solidity that comes from having the root at the bottom.

One other possibility for triads is to place the 5th at the bottom, and this gives us an even-less stable triad (C/G). This chord begs for a resolution to G (i.e., C/G  - G – C).

But to say that a triad is unstable is by no means a criticism. In fact, you will find that musical progressions sound fresh and interesting when they are comprised of a balance of root position and inverted chords. The question is… how do we know when to use them?

Here are some quick tips to guide you:

1. Use an inversion to animate a static bass line. If your progression requires your bass to do a lot of jumping by 4ths and 5ths, you can smooth this out and get the line moving by using an inversion. Here’s an example: C  F  C  G  C, with each chord played for 4 beats. Try modifying it with inversions (each chord played for 2 beats:) C  C/E  F  F/A  C  C  G  G/B  C
2. Use an inversion to make a boring progression more interesting. Related to point 1 above, if your progression has you dwelling on one chord for a long period of time, get the bass line involved by creating inversions.
3. If your melody line moves from the 3rd of a chord to an upper root of the chord, you can mirror that motion by moving the bass from the root of the chord up to the 3rd. It creates interesting interplay between melody and bass.

There are times when you need to be careful about using inversions:

1. If the melody and bass line are on the same note, don’t invert the next chord if it means both melody and bass move to the same note (i.e., avoid parallel octaves).
2. Be careful about leaping to inversions if there seems to be no good need or reason. For example, this might be hard to make work: C  F/A  Dm  G/B… etc. These inversions will often result in the ear being confused.
3. Avoid inversions if it means that the bass note following the inversion is an augmented 4th or diminished 5th away. In other words, this will be a bit hard on the ear: C  G/B  F, because the bass moving from the note B to F will be somewhat unpleasant.

Inversions can be a great way to make an otherwise boring progression a bit more interesting, and can get some motion in your bass line, but as with most elements at your disposal, be careful how you use it.

That was five years ago on World of Warcraft’s welcome page, and we are still in Azeroth having fun with no intention to leave. Blizzard is always trying to improve and balance the game, and are constantly adding new content and services - lets face it, even if we wanted to leave, they just wont let us go.

To celebrate the anniversary Blizzard prepared several nice features for us. They just launched the Warcraft anniversary website where we can find lost’s of fun stuff like “video interviews featuring personal anecdotes from some of the shapers of Warcraft, as well as the Battlecry Mosaic where you can show off your faction pride” (Zarhym) , and everyone who logs in to World of Warcraft in next few days will receive feat of strenght achievement WoW’s 5th Anniversary (just like last year), and so cute Onyxian Whelpling pet.

Mrs. Alves and Mrs. Filkins led two great sessions of Drum Circle Club this fall. Third, fourth, and fifth graders met after school for rhythm, movement, and interaction.  And don’t forget the pizza party!

The words from Dave Holland’s game in the book Drumagination remind us what drum circle is all about:

So what are chakras and where are they located?

Each chakra relates to a particular energetic function.  The first chakra, at the tip of your spine, relates to survival and the energy of your physical life.

The word ‘chakra’ is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel’; but perhaps even a better translation would be spinning wheel. If you could see chakras (as many of us whom work with them do) you would be able to see each primary chakra as a spinning vortex or wheel of energy.

There are 7 main chakras in the body and the first one is at the tip of your spine.  It’s about survival.  The second one is located 2 finger widths below your belly button and is about sensuality, sexuality and relationships.  The third chakra is located in the soft part of your solar plexus and is about control, resistance and manifestation.  The 4^th chakra is located where the sternum bones meet in your chest.  This one is about love and self love, and love of others.  5^th one is communication and creativity, and is located in the soft part of the neck.  The sixth is the 3^rd eye and located just above and between your physical eyes.  It’s also the spirit part of you.  The seventh is located 2 inches above your head and is the connection to the source, supreme being or whoever it is for you.  It is also how you take yourself out into the world and how people view you.

Was gibt es genialeres als nachts durch New York zu laufen. Schade das es nur noch einige Tage sind, ich könnt hier wohnen.

I was pretty surprised just now. I made an impulsive and brutally honest reply to a post that made it to the WordPress homepage, and my comment on that piece  appears to have been intercepted. Could that be?

Is there some kind of “big brother” who oversees your comment on a blog you’ve just read?  And if you’ve expressed a gut-level (soul level), negative response, (such as that you’re offended by the use of the f-word) are you supposed to tuck your tail and back away?

Sure, I know that blog comments are subject to editing and I understand why they have to be and I approve of that practice. Still, I sincerely hope that at least the blogger who offended me, had a chance to read my comment.

I’m not denying anybody their right to say whatever they need to say.  But I represent a few people, mostly elders, I suppose, who are offended by blatant disrespect for God’s sacred gift to man, sexual union.

And don’t lie to yourself and think that it “doesn’t mean that anymore.” That most POWERFUL word never has and never can mean anything other than what it says.

It’s angry, sick, demeaning and should be expected only on sidewalks and public restroom walls where it used to shock decent people when I was a kid. It can never be justified or cute or clever or lifted up. It cannot be other than what it is: sacrilegious.

I’m sorry for those who have to use that word to express themselves. I appreciate people not using it in my home. There has never been a movie, a show, a relationship, or a life, or a blog, that has been improved by use of the f-word.

Guy Fawkes & The KJV

This past Thursday, November 5, 2009 a fellow by the name of Malik Nidal Hasan shot up the army base at Fort Hood killing 13 and wounding 31. But something you may not know is that the British celebrate November 5 (Guy Fawkes Day) kind of the way we celebrate 9/11.

November 5, 1605 was the day a group of Catholics had plotted to blow up the King of England along with the entire parliament. Most Catholics of that day like most Muslims of our day wouldn’t have participated but wouldn’t have felt too bad about it either.

In 1605 the economy was on the rise and thriving kind of like it was in 2001 when terrorists flew planes into the twin towers. The King knew he had opposition but never imagined it would escalate to the level it did.

The name of the King was James and he was a student of the Bible.  He wrote a paraphrase of the Book of the Revelation and even translated some of the Psalms.

But being king of England wasn’t James’ first crowning achievement.  In fact, James was only 13 months old when he was crowned James VI of Scotland on July 29, 1567. Five months earlier his father had died in a bomb blast at his home. Then 20 years later his mother was beheaded at the age of 44. Finally, in 1603 when Elizabeth died, James VI of Scotland was crowned King James I of England.

I don’t know if James was a saved man but when you study the history behind Nov 5, 1605, you can’t help but see the hand of God at work.  Historians speculate that they would have carried out the plot sooner but for some strange reason the meeting of parliament had been delayed.

If you’ve ever noticed in football, sometimes when one team goes to kick a field goal the other team will call a timeout.  They don’t call a timeout because they need it.  They call a timeout because they want the kicker to get shook up thinking about his next kick.  And when God delayed the meeting of parliament those men got nervous.

Some of them even took the time to try and warn several members of Parliament to stay away from the court that day (all of which were Catholics too). One of those was Lord Chamberlain Monteagle.  When he received an anonymous letter telling him to avoid parliament that day, he immediately brought it to the attention of the King

The king and his people had little to go on. On November 4, 1605 they were still investigating and looking for clues, when, at the stroke of midnight they discovered Guy Fawkes standing outside the cellar door of Westminster Palace. The men had searched the cellar before and found nothing.  But after finding a tinderbox and some matches in the pocket of Guy Fawkes, they decided to search it again.

This time, under a pile of firewood and coal they found 36 barrels of gunpowder sitting right under the spot where King James would be standing in just a few short hours.

So at 1 AM they woke up the King and drug Fawkes in to stand before him. Historians say that he stood emotionless, regretting only that he had failed in his attempt to kill the King. If I’m not mistaken they used “enhanced interrogation techniques,” otherwise known as “torture” to make him give up the names of his buddies.   None of them ever stood trial but died in a shootout when authorities tried to apprehend them. Not long afterward, Guy Fawkes was tried and hung all by himself in St. Paul’s churchyard.

400 years later the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Day as a day they killed the Catholics who tried to kill their King.

Now, why would Satan have wanted to destroy the King and his parliament? Perhaps because only a year before that day the new King had given permission to a large group of scholars to begin work on a new translation of the Bible.   This translation would never have been completed had Fawkes and his Catholic co-conspirators been successful.  But they weren’t and in 1611 the new translation was completed, presented, and dedicated to King James.

Most King James Bibles still have this dedication in the front of the Book.

I can see why young sports-fan readers would like this book and others in the series. The mixture of many real-life details of the sports and sports journalism world and a mild mystery (with a surprising, heavier twist toward the end) is just right to keep these readers’ interest up.

However, for someone who seeks more intense mystery or actions and cares less about the sporting aspects, this title will fall short in sustaining their attention.

I do appreciate that there are two young sleuths, one boy and one girl, and that they are smart and mature, but still rely on some help from the adults.  It lends realism and credibility to the story.

Cheryl Cole is being pursued for a guest spot in the next series of Doctor Who, according to a report in The Mirror today.

The X Factor judge has yet to sign a deal with the show but could play “a big part” in the fifth series, which is currently being filmed in Wales. An insider told the newspaper: “If she can find the time, a part will be written for her.”

A BBC spokesperson refused to deny the speculation, saying: “The BBC will not be commenting on casting or storyline speculation for the new series of Doctor Who.”

It was previously confirmed that Alex Kingston is reprising her role as River Song for a two-part story in the new run.

In Art class we will be learning about narrative art; art that tells a story.  My Story Maker is a fun, intereactive site where you can practice your storytelling.  Check it out here!

The fifth and final instalment of the Xbox Summer of Arcade was released this week, Shadow Complex. This was a game that I had been looking forward to for several months, since I saw a demo at E3. It appears by the sheer amount of people I saw playing the game on release day, that a lot other people were also anticipating the title. Shadow Complex is the story of a guy, and his girl. Guy loses girl. Guy goes after girl. However this time the guy is not a super-trained spy. He actually has had no training at all. He learns new abilities through items that he picks up throughout the game. The items can be upgraded through secret pickups that you find. These pickups let you hold more of an item usually (for example, each grenade secret will let you hold 2 more grenades). There are several different cut scenes for melee combat which look nice. When you use mounted gun emplacements, your view turns from a platform angle, to a more familiar 3rd person shoot angle which is a nice touch. I also liked how you had unlimited gun ammunition.

The controls are very simple and easy to use. The graphics also look great, especially for an arcade game. Shadow Complex is pretty long considering. You get your moneys worth in that department. As for the story, in general, I liked it. It seemed like there was always a reason to be doing what you do, though sometimes cheesy. The cut scenes look great a smooth. The difficulties are well made. Easy/Normal are straightforward, whereas the harder difficulties provide the ‘experts’ with a challenge. To be honest though, the hardest part I found in the game was finding your way around! Even though there is a map which tells you where to go, often you have to detour off this. If you can’t find where to go, there is usually a hidden vent somewhere which you have to shoot and crawl through.

One of the main criticisms of the game is that you get items which you barely use. Just before the end of the game, you pick up several pieces of equipment which you may use 5 times before you finish. It feels like there is no point to them. Another annoying element is the constant sense that it is not actually an action game. More of an exploration game, with a bit of shooting thrown in. I would have loved to see more fighting, rather than climbing and crawling, and generally, trying to find the way all the time. The game also has a bit of a rubbish ending. I won’t spoil it for those of you who have not finished it, but I will just say it was a disappointment. I would have loved to see some multi-player in there as well, but that would only have been a bonus. Once you complete the game, it offers very little except to go back and collect every single item which I find tedious and boring to be honest. Another point which I found bewildering, is what the hell is the point of the bit at the beginning? Aside from being mentioned once more in the game, it has no relevance what so ever.

Now time for the mark. Due to the great graphics, entertaining storyline, and good gameplay, I give Shadow Complex 4/5. If you are into your XBLA games, then I recommend you buy this. If not, only if you have a few spare Microsoft Points you wouldn’t mind spending. The game will take the average player 4-5 hours to complete (not looking for the hidden items).

Was not quite wowed by it as I had expected. I love the final book design (I read the galley) with its gorgeous cover and the amazing map on the inside of the cover.

Reading the extremely detailed passages about how all the mechanics work and each movement of the “machines” (be they purely mechanical or bio-mechanical) echoed back to my experience with the second Transformer movie: I wanted to get over the technical parts and the visual effects to reach the core of the STORY. It’s a frustrating experience.

Leviathan does have better storytelling than some of the recent big budget movies and as I approached the end of the tale, witnessing the two main characters develop respect and affection toward each other, I thought, “Now let’s hope the second book is a better read, with a more solid plot and more character development.” Also have to note that the world-building is definitely superb.

Daniel aka Juelz celebrated his 5th birthday over the weekend. Solange has mentioned in the past that Juelz is addicted to Sushi and some Japanese characters.  Solange was under the weather for the birthday celebration but that didn’t stop her from bringing Japan to Texas for her son’s birffday! I thought that re-creating cake into sushi was very innovative!
