Finding a guitar teacher in today’s world who REALLY knows how to play and is well rounded is next to impossible. Or, slim to none and Slim left town. If you can find a player who can burn, and by burn I mean similar to my definition of this, you are one incredibly fortunate son-of-a-bitch. Now, they CAN be a guy who burns but may not be able to teach you anything other than technique, which is just fine. And, also has the ability to “teach.” (Having the ability to actually teach someone something, impart knowledge to another, really is a talent unto itself.) If that’s the case, that player is worth his proverbial weight in gold. Again, this is based on my definition of a real technician player. Which, by this time, if you’ve been keeping up with my columns, you should have a very good idea what this means. If not, get your fuckin’ ass back to the beginning and start reading.

If you have the misfortune of living in a one horse town, well, your going to have to make due with some other things that I’ll be covering right here in this installment. Some things can ONLY be learned through human contact. You’re very limited by reading text. You can get a much better idea by watching a video. But, to have someone, one-on-one in front of you telling you, “Don’t do this, don’t do that. Do this, do that,” this is what NEEDS to be done. There is no two ways about it and ABSOLUTELY NO WAY around it.

You see, I am about doing it RIGHT the FIRST mutherfucking TIME. I don’t like the term “old school” since every rap/hip-hop cock-suckin’ walkin’ pile of pig shit uses this once cool term, but I really am “Old School.” And, you as a player must take on my attitude of doing it right the first time too. Now, if you just wanna to play guitar a little, get together with some neighborhood pals and start a garage band and have fun getting shit-faced drunk doing it, then my columns are not really for you. You can certainly get something out of them, but they’re directed at people who want to take music seriously and for it to be their life. Becoming a real musician is a serious business and YOU must take it seriously just as I have. And, not forget that this IS a BUSINESS, and YOU must treat it as such.

I feel that I’m beginning to get into my new, soon to be started column entitled, “Crappys Music Business 101,” so I’ll bring it back to the topic at hand. You need to audition the teacher you’re considering to take lessons from. Did you find him through an advertisement? Did you walk into a music store? Did a friend or some jack-off you don’t know, tell you about this guy? You need to hear this guy go off in some way to get an idea what he can do, and if what he can do is what you’re looking to learn. If he looks pretty good at this point, you may have to actually pay for a few lessons with him to see if he can teach you and is patient with your learning curve. Some guys are kick-ass players but can’t teach you how to spell C-A-T. So, after 1-2 or 3 lessons you will know if you want to continue with this guy, or drop this cock, and continue looking.

If you can’t locate an instructor, you’ll have to make due with video’s and the Internet. There are many places on-line you can go and I’m sure you know some already. Technically, Paul Gilbert’s videos can give you a great foundation in that area. As for your musical education, you can get a nice, sizable chunk learned at your local junior/city college, and supplement that with the video’s and on-line stuff.

Yep, I’m back and with a bloodthirsty vengeance. This subject is CRUCIAL. In fact, being able to correctly pick is the “do-or-die” ability of being a proficient player. If you can’t pick CORRECTLY and WELL, you are half the player you are supposed to be, and you will NEVER be the COMPLETE, WELL ROUNDED player you could be and SHOULD BE.

Now, I’ve gone off on so many dip-shits on the Internet that I may as well talk about picking too. There are many, many variations to picking. But just a couple that are the most proficient. And, after all, if you’re going to put in the hours, days, weeks, months and in some cases years to do something, it’s pure logic you should do it the best and most proficient way possible. And, with comfort, endurance and longevity in mind.

There is a guitarist who made the following statement coming up that I found really fucking funny and I can’t argue against his comment. This guitarist who is very, very good, said this then later retracted it. So, because he retracted it, he may have realized he shouldn’t have said it. So, I won’t tell his name but I will repeat his comment which was about Paul Gilbert. I paraphrase,

” Paul Gilbert isn’t doing anything that a trained monkey with arthritis and a metronome couldn’t do.”

This comment is one of the funniest fuckin’ things I’ve heard in many years. Paul has come up with some neat and fun shapes, and I like some of the stuff he’s done quite a bit. But, most of it if not all of it are very simple things done very fast.

Paul Gilbert has showed you how to play his stuff. He’s done the exact same things, “concepts” in great detail for well over 20 years. And, you blind and deaf mutherfuckers still haven’t learned. So, I doubt my contribution will put much of a dent in things, but, what the fuck.

The Problem: Not doing what I’m telling you.

The Fix: Doing what I’m telling you.

Rather than going into all the bad habits and poor techniques, I’m going to just cut to the correct things to do.

For the visual portion of this lesson, watch any of Paul’s instructionals. Ignore his left hand completely. Watch his right hand only. His right hand is completely relaxed. His shoulders are level. Meaning he doesn’t have his right shoulder raised up by his ear (except when he’s sitting down with the guitar on his right leg). For the most part he doesn’t bend his thumb while picking. I say, don’t bend your thumb for any reason. You’re resting the heal of your palm the portion where your little finger (the blade of your little finger) is connected on the bridge, just in front of the saddles.

When you are sitting down to play, have your guitar on your left leg. NOT your right. Having it on your left leg puts the guitar in a neutral and center position. And, is the most ergonomic and easy position to be in and to be in for a long period of time. Your thumb is straight with a very small part of the pick sticking down and out from the side of your thumb. You’re resting on the strings slightly in front of the bridge. Chose which way you’re most comfortable holding the pick in the direction it’s going to slice the string. You’ve only have two choices. It’s a diagonal angle, left on top down to the right, or right on top to down on the left. Again, that’s how you’re holding the pick with only one of those two directions. Close your hand. Keep your fingers curled in a little like making a fist but looser. Don’t flex your arms when playing. If you do, relax and focus on the loose, relaxed wrist movement.

Unsynchronized picking is when there is no control in your picking and some notes get picked 2 or 3 times, some picked once, and some may not get picked at all. There is no coordination or precision of any kind and it’s just a mess. Remember, you’re not fooling anyone with this shit.

The key visual is watching Gilbert. And, only use the bridge (rear) pickup and a metronome. Speed comes naturally from doing the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over and a fairly slow speed with the metronome and making small incremental increases over some time.

That’s about it. Don’t anchor any fingers anywhere on the guitar body. Don’t have your fingers sticking straight out either. And, stop making things harder than they really aren’t. Watch his vids. He’s showing you how to do it. I think that’s it. But, I may add or do some refining to this “Picking” section so be aware. After all, I’m NOT getting paid for this!!

The only thing bad about this song is that it’s too short! The end is like the climax and you

The only thing bad about this song is that it’s too short! The end is like the climax and you are left wanting more. So I keep on having to push replay over and over , and over again! It’s addictive, once the beat it’s in your head you will find yourself humming this song through out the day. Just a brilliant song. But I guess he had to make it short like the songs in the early to mid 60’s that were no more than 2;35 seconds. It was all intentional.

I love the way a lot of artist are taking the music back to the Motown sound. This is the way music used to be, good. It’s danceable, headbopping, singing in the shower, riding in the car singing kind of music. All my friends thought I was crazy for saying this a few years back, but everything (especially MUSIC) has been so “RHETRO” over the past few years that I knew the 60’s sound was coming back! There’s was no other pure, untapped sound out there for inspiration right now. Then WINEHOUSE, JOSS STONE, RAPHAEL, and a few other newer artists dropped and now it’s becoming crazy. That’s cool though, because this sound can’t be manipulated; IT’S ONLY FOR THOSE WHO CAN REALLY SING!

Raphael you have no idea how PROUD you make TRUE music-heads with this joint!

You can tell by her smile shes such a love child.
And every man in this place would love to be in her space.

…and it’s a strange tale (tail?). City Winery on Varick and Vandam in NYC has got to be

…and it’s a strange tale (tail?).

City Winery on Varick and Vandam in NYC has got to be one of the oddest music venues in town. Not a bad venue. Not at all. But odd. The layout is ludicrously large and sprawls out in such a way that the stage is only truly visible from a few tables. Kirsten and I sat one table back from the stage – so our view was just fine. However, we glanced over at the alleged VIP section and saw all kinds of visual obstructions. There’s a column and an I-beam right in the middle of the room at that point of the layout that seems placed not as an architectural necessity – but a Lloyd Wright tribute. It makes no sense and seems to serve no purpose. (If architects are reading this – or the City Winery engineers are reading this – please illuminate.)

Even the video guy that had to climb over our table to adjust one of the cameras for the eighteenth time because of the bizarre feng shui of the place had no reasoning for any of this. He did claim, however, that all of the money had probably gone into designing the place for sound.

I’m no audiophile – but when Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs (working under the moniker ‘Sid ‘n’ Susie’ ) kicked into an acoustic cover of Sweet’s 1995 hit “Sick Of Myself,” bizarre feng shui and acoustic resonance was immaterial.

Matthew Sweet was paramount in the early nineties musical scene. He reconciled the growl of grunge with the honey-touch of radio friendly pop. And how many of us survived our first high-school break-ups with the rich valentine that was “Girlfriend” or were aided into teenage disaffection by “Altered Beast?”

Lyrics from “Knowing People” –

‘Are you made like God / When you start to bleed
Do you really know / What it is to breathe
Without a mind to think / Or a hand in fate
You’re an animal / Filled with love and hate.’

It’s a misanthrope’s fucking ANTHEM! And definitely something this young man at 16-years-old amped-up on his CD-player while thrashing on his school-loaned Fender Precision.

So, between songs Sweet cleverly banters as the band sets up for the next. His energy is charismatic and his enthusiasm is infectious. Hoffs, for the most part, sits pretty and says little. This works for me because she looks better at age 50 than she ever did as a twenty-something Bangel.

And Sweet starts talking about the band’s “merch” – merchandise the band provides – which needs to be kept down a back hallway so that it won’t conflict with the winery’s merchandise. And he starts talking about his pottery.

The man makes and sells pottery at his gigs to make some extra cash.

This is a man who helped soothe my aching, 16-year-old broken heart and – after all the radio play and all the chart success – he’s still hawking his wares at the fair to make a little extra bank.

And then he mentions that all the cat-lovers in the audience should head back there and check it out.

So – after the gig is over – cat-lovers Kirsten and I head back down this hallway. I should preface this by saying that – while I love and adore cats – nobody loves cats the way that Kirsten loves cat.

And – on this little table – covered in a simple, black velvet table cloth – there lays a simple, white sign written in black permanent marker that says “Sid ‘n’ Susie” – with accompanying star-burst that reminds me of a “stop for lemonade” sign my neighbors and I made when we were 8.

Surrounding the sign were dark blue ceramic cats with elongated eyes that made them look – oddly enough – like extra-terrestrials in a typical alien-abduction story.

And Kirsten just had to have one. Because she just had to have a ceramic cat made by Matthew Sweet.

She has now deemed it the talisman for her new office (she’s moving into a spiffy new office this weekend…hooray…and she’s all kinds of stressed) and will be displaying rather prominently – I would imagine.

There was a great lesson I took away from the whole affair – no matter how far you go in the business or what success you gain – it can all be so easily taken from you – and fame and fortune are not guaranteed to last even if you have them…

…and if you’ve got talent you need to keep your guitar tuned, your case open, and be sure to have a ceramic cat to hawk at the fair because no one’s gonna look out for you the way you are gonna look out for you.

It was a solid show of mostly covers. It was a relaxed affair as they took questions from the audience. Musically, the highlights of the evening were the above mentioned “Sick of Myself” and a beautifully rendered, vocally agile “Here Comes the Sun” by George Harrison – made even more memorable by the affectionate way Sweet ribbed Hoffs after she had forgotten the second verse and they had to start the tune over.

Other songs they did last night (not precisely in this order):

“I’ve Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People” (Yes)
“Willin’” (Little Feat channeled by Linda Ronstadt)
“What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding” (Nick Lowe/Elvis Costello)
“Cinnamon Girl” (Neil Young and Crazy Horse)
“Different Drum” (Stone Poneys/Linda Ronstadt)
“She May Call You Up Tonight” (The Left Bank)
“Hello, It’s Me” (Todd Rundgren)
“Maggie May” (Rod Stewart)
“To Sir With Love” (Lulu)
“In Your Room” (Bangles)
“Manic Monday” (Bangles)
“Sick Of Myself” (Sweet)

This has been a decent week in terms of movie watching, after a dry spell for me. Ever since I start

This has been a decent week in terms of movie watching, after a dry spell for me. Ever since I started working full time, I know our basement-movie-theater at home is missing me, I can see it become more and more gloomy and morose these days; feels neglected because that was my lair earlier and now I rarely see it..mostly over the weekends. Anyways, I resolved to spend as much time as I can get in it, henceforth. Afterall, a relationship needs nurturing from both sides – and to it I promise: I will spend more time with it – hang out and watching movies together, starting today.

So I am happy to announce that I have been quite successful so far in keeping up my resolution – saw 2 movies over the weekend, and not just any tripe, 2 decent movies after a dismal hindi movie the previous week (Main Aur Mrs. Khanna – refer earlier post)

I just happened by chance to stop at the dvd rental place on the way back from work with very little hope of finding anything decent. After going through both of the piles of crappy movies, I almost gave up, when he put in front of me, a last small stack of dvds. Flicking through it, I was surprised to find a movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman (henceforth referred to as PSH), Bill Nighy, and a few others, The Boat That Rocked. I only saw the metaphorical meaning in the beginning, and thought its probably a drama (the caption said 1 boat, 8 djs, no morals .. and I still didn’t get it, dumb idiot that I am!); still, I had to watch it cos of PSH and it had 70s colours for some reason. I took a chance, thought “how bad can it be, the poster looks kind of fun” and took it, along with The Brothers Bloom, which Id been meaning to watch because of Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz.

Boy, was I in for a surprise. As the name suggests, the movie is literally about the boat, which rocked! 8 DJs – PSH known as the Count, and 7 others cast well – broadcast from a boat belonging to Quentin (played by the elegantly quirky Bill Nighy), because rock and roll music was banned by the conservative government in the 60’s in Britain, and this broadcast from the North Sea (apparently these are called Pirate Radio Stations – there were quite a few back then, and were quite popular with the youth. So these being rock ‘n’ roll djs, there was lots of lovely music, drugs, and ofcourse, sex. Women not allowed on the boat (other than the lesbian cook), except on one night of the week, when each dj is allowed to invite one (not very strict if they can find more).

Into this despicable, godforsaken place where everyone just has a lot of fun and no morals, is sent (by his mother) Quentin’s godson, when he’s expelled from school, for some straightening under his godfather. James quickly adjusts to the rocking lifestyle on the boat under the tutelage of the djs, and also comes this close to losing his virginity (which he could never do at school), before a sneaky, suave dj steals his girl. Meanwhile, the govt is trying hard to find laws and means to ban pirate radios as well, since they dont want England’s future to be spoiled by the rock and roll lifestyle. When the desperate government bans advertising to hit the station’s only source of revenue, Quentin brings back a retired but hugely popular DJ, Gavin (Rhys Ifans, who is a real eye opener – never imagined this guy could look good!), the last word in Cool & Sexy, as demi-god as a rockstar, with his sexy voice, to save the station. This proves a success, and the vile Twat who serves the govt, is forced to look for better ways to beat the station.

Meanwhile, life is rocking on the boat, but there are also times when the boat is rocked for some of the cool djs..some happy and some sad moments. Theres a weird sequence where The Count and Gavin compete with each other over Simon, a fellow dj. It was well-shot and put me on the edge of my seat even though I knew it wasn’t going to be of much consequence. As my sis pointed out, it was curious that almost every frame of the movie had atleast a spot of red in it, and I think it made the movie more good looking (this grammatical error – I could have said “better looking” – is intentional).

Finally, after poring through several legal texts, Twat discovers a legal loop by which the Pirates can be banned on sea as well, and manages to shut it down…for a brief few minutes, before the djs realise they’d rather die or be arrested, rather than give up playing their music, and rock & roll on….

…until murphy plays spoilsport and sinks the ship. Watch the movie to see how it ends, and for the fun 60’s music. I play it in the car everyday and am loving it

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Donovan. Donovan is someone who I think has been really under-appreciated in the music world. When you listen to his music (more specifically his later stuff), it just doesn’t sound like anyone else’s. Obviously he started out as the ‘Scottish Bob Dylan’ (and many saw him as a pale imitation of Dylan, in fact), but as his career progressed, he added more psychedelic and world music influences, and with his backing band of John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and the Jeff Beck Group, he added a hard-rock element that makes his songs still sound fresh today.

Some of my favorite Donovan songs are: “Barabajagal”, “Colours” (original version), “Superlungs”, “Hurdy Gurdy Man”, “Sunshine Superman”, “Happiness Runs”, “Epistle to Dippy”, and “Season of the Witch.”

My ultimate favorite Donovan song, and perhaps one of my favorite songs of all time is “Wear Your Love Like Heaven.” Pure genius.

Wed Sep 23, 12:37 pm ET

CHICAGO – Former child star Mackenzie Phillips said Wednesday her father, John Phillips, who was a leader of the 1960s pop group the Mamas and the Papas, raped her when she was a teenager and that her sexual relationship with him later became what she termed “consensual.”

Mackenzie Phillips writes in her new book, High on Arrival, that she had sex with her father on the night before she was to get married in 1979 at age 19, according to People magazine.

“On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it,” writes Phillips, who was 19 and a heavy drug user at the time. “I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad’s bed.”

“My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.”

On tour: Mackenzie (left) on stage with father John (centre) in 1982 with the New Mamas And Papas after their sexual relationship had become consensual

She told “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in an interview that aired Wednesday that her siblings “definitely have a problem with this.” Winfrey also read a statement from Genevieve Waite, John Phillips’ wife at the time of the alleged abuse and Mackenzie’s stepmother that said he was “incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, of having such a relationship with his own child.”

Phillips, who starred on TV’s “One Day at a Time,” said the sexual relationship with her father lasted a decade and ended when she became pregnant and didn’t know who had fathered the child. She had an abortion, which her father paid for, and “and I never let him touch me again.”

Phillips told Winfrey that she first tried cocaine when she was 11 years old. Her father did drugs with her, taught her to roll joints and injected her with cocaine. Phillips said she’s been clean for a year after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine and entering a drug treatment program.

Phillips said the sexual relationship, although she believes it became consensual, was “an abuse of power” and “a betrayal” on her father’s part. She said she forgave John Phillips on his deathbed.

“I can’t be the only one this has happened to,” Phillips said. “Someone needs to put a face on consensual incest.”

Here is a video of the Mamas and the Papas singing “California Dreaming.” MacKenzie Phillips’ father, John Phillips – “Papa John” - plays guitar, wearing a fur hat. The other band members are Michelle Phillips (at the time, John Phillips’ wife and MacKenzie’s stepmother), Mama Cass Elliot, and Denny Doherty.

Friday’s song is #313:

Michael Caine – It’s Over

The Roy Orbison original may be a classic, but it’s the version by Michael Caine in the 1998 film Little Voice that’s the best. Caine’s character is a villain, a drunken clubowner singing this song onstage with his house band in a moment of particular unease, and his acting is amazing. Caine is actually a decent singer impersonating someone who can’t hit a note to save his life, imbuing a pretty despicable character with some actual humanity. Here’s a torrent of the whole movie.
