KITE IN THE AIR

When looking at ’super groups’, making a whole that is greater than taking it’s individual parts is often one hell of a hit or miss business.  Just check out rock’s attempts, with Velvet Revolver missing it badly, or the more recent Dead Weather, who made it work with a little more success, (although Jack White could join Jedward and make it work as far as we are concerned).  Kite In The Air isn’t quite a ’super group’, but the members have previously existed in separation.  Mike Genius, one half of the dark electronic riff section that was the American duo WZRDZ, has joined forces by playing the laptop behind another duo, Jed & Lucia, who are more used to providing us with a sweet blend of Californian gaze folk.  So they seem to have previously occupied very different genres and it seems rather impossible to imagine they’d ever have a middle in which to meet.  As individual groups their music seemed born from a type of drug infused haze, only the drugs of choice in WZRDZ case were mountains of petrol-infused crack, where Jed & Lucia were drifting on a purple cloudy wave of weed.  However, the music they’ve created whilst pulling together is nothing short of astonishing!  It’s music you will instantly adore, made equally for the headphones as the dancefloor.  It’s what The Golden Filter would have loved to have made, with it’s four beat pace and electro riffs, but with Emma Lucia’s vocals the music totally takes off.  There are the kind of peaks on each track, all available for free on their website, that would make anyone jealous.  Clear headed, or mind fucked beyond repair, this is music that makes a bee-line for your cerebral cortex and stays there until the morning.  Enjoy the sunrise.   (MB)

If you’re from the UK you would be forgiven for thinking this artist is named after the 1980s show starring Arthur Daley, but sadly not.  It’s actually pronounced “Man-dar”, as in her real name, Amanda Warner, and she’s one of those very special finds!  Locating a diamond cut like this is all too rare and it’s commonly followed by plenty of whoops and over-enthusiastic yelping.  Apologies if you involuntarily produce some these noises too, but at least you’ve been warned.  Like all good music, this is best played very loudly, so the synth punch goes straight through you, Bruce Lee style.  Don’t be fooled for thinking this is too basic either, as simplicity is a lot harder to create than you would think and Amanda’s jams, and they are proper jams, have mastered this art.  Jerked dance hall drum machine beats, of a kind not seen since Santi White, jump over modulated synths in a style claimed to be nerdcore.  However, her thumping tunes have plenty of pop and melody fitted inside too, in the same great way those other nerds, Hot Chip, achieve so effortlessly, (she even shares their love of big geek glasses!). The key to it all wrapping up so well is the vocals, which reflectively remind us of Kim Wilde.  She’s previously worked with Har Mar Superstar, Deerhoof and Yeah Yeah Yeahs in various ways, so we will try and get her over to the UK so she can headline a Recommender gig next year.  Hopefully plenty more will arrive from her between now and then as she’s currently busy piecing together her debut album.  This is one space we will all be watching intently!   (MB)

CITADELS

We’ve known about this Shoreditch three piece for some time now, but as always the packed inbox of the blogger is both a blessing, giving us many introductions, but also a bastard, as it takes such a long time to get around to listening to, and ultimately writing about, each new discovery. Citadels seem to be well known around the trendy East London circles, with two out of the three also performing as the dance duo Labyrinth Jackals to reflect their schizophrenic love of dance music. So good was their recent remix of Seven by Chew Lips that we may well have to write Labyrinth Jackals’ own Recommender in due course. If we get around to it of course! Anyway, back to the band Citadels, their original construction, which they formed upon moving to the capital from their south coast roots. The regular comparisons to The Flaming Lips electro pop would only work if the Oklahoma giants had Brett Anderson fronting them! However, their vocals enjoyably crescendo in the same excellent way that Wayne Coyne’s do and they similarly produce a type of playful, dreamy, layered peak to each of their songs. It’s intelligent and totally fearless music, absolutely rammed with melodies and contagious vocals. When they reach the summit of their songs, and they build a song as good as anybody, it turns out the view is truly beautiful. For fans of imaginative, aspirational guitar pop, you will do well to watch this band, as they are due to really deliver their master plan during 2010.   (MB)

Basil Grande
A living classic – Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur and Grand Marnier shaken with fresh strawberries, cranberry juice, fresh basil and black pepper

A double shot of Ketel One Vodka combines sublimely with fresh lime, sugar syrup and lemonade in an Angostura rinsed glass to create this true classic

A gloriously crisp and refreshing drink combining Ketel One Citroen Vodka, Old Fashioned Bitters, fresh lemon and sugar

A refreshingly long drink with Ciroc Super Premium Vodka, Cointreau, fresh ginger, Seville orange marmalade, pressed apple, sugar and lime

I met up with four internet weirdies on Friday, only one of whom I’d met very briefly a long time ago. We had a lovely meal and then went for drinks and I had a really great time and I might even be able to mark of part of No. 64

Everytime I visit home, it seems my schedule is always so full with business related activities that I never have much time to visit with anyone. I have to schedule in anyone I want to visit with, including grandparents. Last month I was able to visit home for almost 2 weeks and I finally had a chance to take a few pics of my Granny P playing cards with her friends. They have been doing this weekly for a couple of years and she’s asked me a few times when I’m going to take pictures of them playing. Here are just a few shots…

Quarta-feira é o dia da minha rúbrica da praxe no FNintendo, é onde eu aproveito o meu momento de fama para refilar como qualquer idoso saudável de 17 anos.

O tema da semana deriva de uma relação entre o momento actual da Wii e o sucesso (ou pouco sucesso) da Nintendo 64. Nada como ler o excerto, e depois ir ao FNintendo ler. Obrigado.

Tem-se falado bastante no facto da Wii estar um pouco abaixo das mais directas concorrentes em termos de hardware, o que poderá vir a prejudicar a sua competitividade e posição no mercado a longo-prazo. Quer-se uma Wii em HD, com DVDs maiores, com maior capacidade, que dê para ver filmes, com um online melhor, e que, em todos os aspectos seja igual à PS3 e à X360, só que branca.
Ora, decidi pensar um pouco neste aspecto e relacioná-lo com a época do jogo que ando a jogar nos últimos dias, o Zelda: Ocarina of Time, definido pela crítica como O Melhor Jogo da Vida (juntamente com o Final Fantasy VII) e apesar de as revistas de videojogos todos os meses atribuirem este tipo de títulos a um jogo diferente (lembram-se quando o GameOver no espaço de 5 meses definiu nada mais, nada menos que 12 “Jogos do Ano”?). Enfim, o facto de nunca ter terminado o Ocarina of Time tem-me dado montes de problemas sociais e as pessoas olham-me de lado, na escola gozam comigo e chamam-me nomes, os meus avós não sabem o que me hão de fazer, e como fã da série, não vou querer que os meus futuros filhos tenham vergonha do seu pai.
A Nintendo 64 trouxe uma revolução e uma grande aposta tecnológica para a sua época. Marcava a transição dos jogos com sprites (2D) para modelos e polígonos (3D), permitia um multiplayer até 4 jogadores, um comando com botões suficientes para encher um guarda-fato, cores para todos os gostos e feitios, franchises de sucesso, enfim, tinha tudo para dominar em grande a geração de consolas.

Super Zaxxon beziehungsweise ursprünglich nur Zaxxon genannt, ist ein klassisches Arcade-Spiel aus dem Jahre 1982. Der Entwickler Sega schuf mit diesem Spiel eine Art Shoot’em up, welches man mit der Kontrolle eines Raumschiffs meistern soll. Meistern deshalb, weil einem auf dem Flug, wie soll es auch anders sein, zahlreiche Gegner entgegen fliegen, die nur darauf aus sind, dich bzw. dein Raumschiff vom “Himmel” zu holen. Daher bleibt dir nichts anderes übrig, als jene ebenfalls zu beschießen und somit ins Jenseits zu befördern. Umso mehr Gegner man besiegt und je weiter man sich durch die kosmische Basis kämpft, desto mehr Punkte gibt es dafür, was demzufolge eine Highscore-Jagd fördern soll. Schließlich wurde es, wie so viele Spiele aus diesem Zeitalter, auf dem Atari 2600 veröffentlicht, wo das Erzielen von Rekordpunktzahlen an der Tagesordnung und notwendig für’s Geschäft war. Als weitere Startplattform ist der ColecoVision zu nennen.

Das Besondere an Zaxxon war der Einsatz einer isometrischen Perspektive. Mit deren Hilfe konnte eine gewisse räumliche Tiefe erzeugt werden, weshalb man es kurzerhand als quasi-3D-Scroller bezeichnen kann. Nerdig ausgedrückt, wäre das  dann ein Upper-Right-Diagonal-Scroller – jedoch wäre es damit nur halb beschrieben. Es gibt nämlich desweiteren die Möglichkeit, das Raumschiff nach links und rechts, sowie nach oben und unten zu steuern. Dadurch kann man auch Hindernisse, wie etwa Mauern, überfliegen. Das Spielprinzip wurde dabei vom quasi 2D-Vorgänger Scramble kopiert. Um sich davon ein genaueres Bild machen zu können, hier ein Vorschauvideo:

Zaxxon war, vermutlich gerade wegen des revolutionären Spielprinzips, äußerst erfolgreich. Daher folgte noch im gleichen Jahr Super Zaxxon, bei dem es am Ende einen Roboter zu besiegen galt -  es wurde ein Bossgegner hinzugefügt. Außerdem wurde es innerhalb von 2 Jahren, also bis 1984, auf sage und schreibe 13 Plattformen portiert: unter anderem auf den Commodore 64 und das Sega Master System. 1987 erschien der Nachfolger Zaxxon 3-D und ein Klon namens Panther. 8 Jahre später (1995) folgte dann der letzte Teil der Serie für den Sega 32X: Zaxxon Motherbase 2000.

Confession:  I bought the iPod Touch for this app.  Ok, not really, but I thought about it.  Unfortunately, the C64 app got pulled from the iTunes store for violating Apple’s Terms of Service about a week before I got the iPod Touch.  (Why that happened is a story unto itself.)  Manomio revised the emulator and Apple finally approved the re-release last week.

Premise

The C64 app is a Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone / iPod Touch.  It plays authentic, licensed reproductions of classic C64 games.  The app currently comes with 8 games built in:  Arctic Shipwreck, Dragons Den, International Basketball, International Soccer, International Tennis, Jack Attack, Jupiter Lander, and Le Mans.  The games are not the first that come to my mind when I think C64 games, except maybe International Soccer, but it’s a nice spread of genres.

Presentation

The graphics used imitate a classic look and feel.  I’m not overly impressed with the rounded screen effect, and really don’t like the fake screen glare they added (you can see it in the upper half of the gaming screens on my screenshots, especially when there’s a dark background).  I hope future version will allow you to turn these on and off per your preference.  You can play games in portrait and landscape modes.

The game audio is  the original SID (Sound Interface Device) sound, and sounded good to me.

Interface

Controlling games is a matter of using the old joystick and fire button combination.  In portrait mode, the game takes up the upper half of the screen and the joystick and fire button take up the bottom, similar to a Nintendo DS.  In landscape mode, the game is fullscreen and the controls are invisibly overlayed on the gameplay screen.  Both seem to work fine, but I haven’t decided which I like better.  The games are not like the type where your character stays in the middle of the screen and your fingers don’t get in the way much when they are positioned over the gameplay screen.  I’m starting to think that it depends on the game.

Freshness

The app is groundbreaking in terms of it being on of the few emulators of a gaming platform that is officially approved by Apple.  Apple would not allow the inclusion of uploading your own games to it (not sure why Frotz is still allowed to).  It works well though and gives me a serious C64 fix.  Hopefully we’ll see other official game platform apps like this, rather than a separate app for each

Value

The app is $4.99, which is not overly expensive.  Manomio LLC has already submitted the first round of downloadable addon games to Apple for approval, which they say will be priced from free to $1.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the price doesn’t go down around the time those are released, probably in December.  Being a Commodore 64 fan from years back, I’m definitely enjoying the C64 app.

i didn’t even use my card at all until yesterday, but i did check my account when i got home. i also just got done shopping with my mom and am glancing over those purchases now. my dad sprung it on me this week that i’ll also be paying for my gas now. i can’t really complain though, it is about time! i’m so spoiled. i’m hoping that my tips will be able to cover all my gas expenses.  (2/2 times for 2/131 weeks)

my hair is really oily still. i was under the impression that the baking soda would dry it out some. still washing my hair with no-poo every other day. this is what i did with regular shampoo oh well, i am still enjoying it and i actually really like the gritty feeling. is that weird? (2/4 weeks)

goal #82, shop at thift stores before going retail:
well, i needed new work shoes, and i didn’t want to spend a lot of time trying to find them. i don’t even know if a second hand store would carry the kind opf work shoes i need. i’d have to be soooo lucky. so i went to target and i spent$30 on work shoes. that were comfortable in the store and once i got home, i put them on, walked to the front door, took them off and went straight back to my room to put my old ones one. goodbye shoes, hello return!

Преди 8 дни получих един пакет, който съдържаше туй, за което иде реч. (Ще се опитам да съм кратък.) Пакета съдържаше iPod Touch (Победа!). Най- накрая, след като и аз се сдобих с тая ‘чудесия’, реших да направя ‘ревю’ на самия продукт. Но поради технически причини този пост позакъсня (с 8 дни). Но няма значение.

iPod-ът е трето поколение, с капацитет 8 GB. Ако смятате да си купувате точно този модел iPod, надявам се поста да Ви помогне в решението.

В самото начало кутията изглеждаше така:

Много хубава, гладка бяла хартийка. И точно посредата- стикер.

Мисля, че тук е момента да спомена мястото от което закупих продукта. Apcom- ауторизиран дистрибутор на Apple. Доволен съм от обслужването, всичко стана лесно и много бързо. (Доставката стана за 2 дни и без никакви проблеми- 1 ден- поръчка, 2- ден- получаване на потвърждение за поръчката, 3 ден- пристигане на продукта)

Обратно към стикера- Има едно нещо изписано на него, което всъщност е голяма лъжа. Опитайте се да познаете… Кърпичка за почистване!!! Няма я!!! Как така Apple намалиха толкова бързо цената на iPod-a на 9 септември? Еми много лесно, като махнаха малката черна кърпичка за почистване. (Като че ли, след известно време, ще си купувате iPod и без слушалки… Ми така си е, защо махнаха от второто поколение iPod Touch насам Movie Stand-a от кутията? -Малката ‘уж’ безсмислена пластмаска, на която можете да си оставите iPod-a например и да си гледате филм или подкаст, без да е нужно да държите iPod-a в ръка)

Но както и да е, преодолях го и си намерих друга кърпичка.

След като разгънете хубавата бяла и гладка хартия виждате следното нещо.

Вътре в кутията ще намерите:

-Dock adapter. – Много хора така и немогат да проумеят за какво е тая проклета пластмаска. Тъй като всички iPod-и (Без най- малкия представител- iPod Shuffle) имат еднакъв порт за зареждане/синхронизиране, но тези iPod- и имат различен профил (форма), са нужни такива dock adapter-и. Например- имате Apple universal dock- той затова е ‘универсален’, защото всеки един модел на iPod може да се ‘закачи’ за него, просто трябва да сложите съответния адаптер на самия dock и след това iPod-a пасва без проблем. (Стана малко объркано т’ва обяснение, дано сте схванали нещо)

-USB 2.0 cable- Това представляват двата края на самия кабел, единия е с обикновен USB ‘жак’ а другия е Apple 30- pin connector който се свързва за самия iPod.

-Stereo Headphones- Слушалки с 3.5 милиметров (стандартен) жак. Слушалките са леко извити в горния край и влизат удобно в ушите, околко огрната си част (тази която влиза в ушите) са ‘обвити’ с материал, подобен на гума при допир, който не позволява на слушалките да се изплъзнат лесно от ушите. Смея да кажа, че по- удобни слушалки не съм притежавал. Дори след 2 часа носене, няма нито изтръпване, нито болка в ушите, нещо, което е често срещано при много от подобните модели слушалки. За звука просто не може да се говори, качествен, чист и естествено- стерео.

Ако си поръчате 32 GB или 64 GB модел, ще получите малко по- различни слушалки. На самия ‘кабел’ те имат т.нар. капсула, в която има микрофон, а на нея има бутони за контролиране на звука. (Дори и да си поръчате 8 GB модел, няма никакъв проблем, защото ‘слушалките с капсула’ се продават и отделно.)

-Instructions- В кутията също ще намерите и Quick Start Guide, Important Product Information (на английски и италиански, ако не се лъжа), Apple стикери и нещо много важно- гаранционна карта (Гаранцията е едногодишна)

И естествено самия iPod.

Да, наясно съм, че ръката ми и апарата се виждат, но тая чудесия е като огледало (само в началото, по- нататък се мърси с какво ли не и поради липсата на кърпичката за почистване, неможете да си почистите iPod-a), естествено аз си изнамерих кърпичка (горе- долу свястна) та от време на време го почиствам iPod-a.

Долната страна на iPod-a. Headphone jack-a, или ‘дупката за слушалките’ ,е 3.5 милиметров и можете да си сложите каквито си искате слушалки.

Като цяло съм доста доволен от iPod-a. Определено го препоръчвам на всеки, който обича да слуша музика докато пътува, да сърфира в интернет, та дори и да играе игри.

I only realised that COD 6 and Modern Warfare 2 were the same thing 2 days ago. I guess it shows how much I really know about videogames. The full title must be Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 or something.
I’ve never had a COD game, because my dad doesn’t like FPS games (or any these days) and I’m too young for them. Even though I’ve heard year 7s talking about how far they’d got on the latest one. There are even films I’m not allowed to watch. I can’t watch the Big Bang Theory (even though I like it and we’ve got pages of it on our PVR) and my parents don’t even think of letting me watch something like Heros or Lost or other stuff people watch. My parents don’t like soaps or the X factor but they do watch I’m a celebrity get me out of here. I can’t because it’s on ‘too late’ for me. (My bedtime is supposed to be 9:00) Back on topic, I never get games as soon as they come out either. I always have to wait for Christmas or my birthday. If you ask me, that was a big mistake in parenting, because when I’m older I’ll do it all the time because I’ve been waiting so long to do it.
Another problem is not having the latest consoles. My family has a PS2 and 2 PSP 300s (one for me and one for my brother) We also used to have a Commodore 64 from my Dad’s childhood (or teens or something) which he threw away cos he couldn’t sell it. I used to enjoy playing the odd ancient game on it. Ah well. PS2s will be like that soon too.
I’m not exactly sure what the general topic of this post actually was. I don’t think I’ll change the title though.

I hope my parents don’t read this; I know my grandparents sometimes do, and my friends from school sometimes do. (Especially James. He even comments sometimes) My parents never read this as far as I know.
You know you’re in trouble when your grandparents are more technically advanced than your parents. (My mum mainly. I swear she has technophobia)

Next, our tour guide took us to the Jewish quarter to see ruins of the Carto Maximus (or main north-south street) through Jerusalem in Byzantine times – the times of the crusades. This was a pretty cool thing to see, especially a mosaic map (called the “Madaba” map) that had been found in a nearby church that depicted what the city would have looked like many hundreds of years ago. Here’s a picture…

This main north-south thoroughfare directly connected the Damascus gate to the north and Zion gate to the south. The crusaders had turned most of this are into roofed markets. Like the other carto maximus streets we saw on our trip, there were stone columns down the center with shops lining either side. The cool thing about this particular incarnation of that architecture was that today the northern half of the strip was still there – a thriving marketplace where we shopped for 30 minutes or so between stops in the city. One other thing I found particularly of note was the way the street was constructed. We were walking on the same stones that were there during the crusades 800-900 years ago. In the middle of the street was a little trough. This is where the sewage ran down the street before the concept of sewer systems. I can’t imagine how badly it must have reeked there. Seeing stuff like that made the black death a bit more understandable / imaginable. Here’s a picture…

Bom…voltando ao assunto

Depois de sair o filme, querem ressurgir aquele espírito que existia em que cada nerd que era fã de Star treck e  queria sua própria nave (principalmente os que falam Klingon rsrs).

Para isso, a  Cryptic e a Atari mostraram um novo vídeo para deixar os fãs de Star Trek loucos. trata-se do novo MMORPGs Star Trek Online, video este dedicado a uma das raças favoritas dos fãs, os Klingons!

Da uma olhada no game…

O game para PCs deve chegar às lojas em fevereiro de 2010.

Particularmente eu gostaria que volta-se essa febre em star Treck (mas acho difícil), os tempos são outros, mas é bacana para quem não conhece esse universo tão rico e criativo que é Star Treck. Mas tenho que admitir que eu gostava mais de Star Wars do que de Star Treck rsrs mas gostava dos dois rs.

Apesar de toscas hoje, as lutas na época eram dramáticas rs (serio pra época eram rsrs). Cara eu não esqueço a treta que teve entre Spock e o Capitão Kirk

mas as veses, vc encontra seres estranhos…se vc não viu nenhum desses seres…tem sorte. Mas se quer continuar a ler esta mateira ESTA COM AZAR PORQUE VAI VER ELES AQUI. Se vc ja viu todos e vai dizer “a mas ja vi todos esses seres ai…” vale a pena ver d..digo, vale lembrar porque a coisas que a humanidade não deve esquecer …para não PERMITIR TAIS ERROS.

Antes de mais nada, eu adoro cosplays. Não sou nada contra quem faz. Tem uma galera que adora meter o pau em quem faz cosplays e quando tem uma festa ou balada “a fantasia” vai la compra uma fantasia barata e vai, sabe porque?!?!? PORQUE QUER SE DIVERTIR E ZOAR e é o mesmo com a galera que faz cosplays, eles vão para eventos para se DIVERTIR. É hipocrisia um cara criticar a galera que vai em eventos como esse, sendo que ele tambem gosta de se divertir ao modo dele. “a mas toda essa grana poderia ser revertida para outras coisas” …sim concordo que se a entrada fosse um quilo de alimento ajudaria muita gente, mas tem muitas pessoas que se dizem intelequituais e são maduros de mais para isso e a grana poderia ir para outros fins…e torram a graninha deles com um copo de  wHISKY Mega caro ou viagens para zoropa.

“Mas du, então porque vc colocou esse cosplays sendo que o que importa é se divertir?!?” Ai que ta, na minha opnião se é pra fazer, fassa bem feito rsrsrs ou seja criativo só isso, é facil eu colocar um saco de lixo no corpo e falar que estou fasendo cosplay de VENON. Mas isso ai não é criatividade. Eu nem pensei pra fazer isso entende?!? Ou mesmo gastar uma nota no personagem que eu gosto…e eu nem pareço com ele rsrs…eu tambem queria fazer o cosplay do Hulk…mas digamos que eu não tenho porte para fazer um bom rsrs (iria parecer o seu madruga pintado de verde pelo chaves que errou o balde de tinta que estava direcionado ao kiko), mas sei que se fizesse um cosplay tentaria ver um que eu pareço e que eu gosto (estou pesquisando pra isso rsrsrs…pombas é mais dificil que parece…persongens negros com naris fino rsrs só em mangá KKKKKK).  Se eu fosse mais cheinho faria do chouji. Cara acho esse personagem bacana mas pouco explorado no universo narutones rsrs. Bem …voltando ao assunto…
