Mac OS X is a wonder. When it comes to personal information management, entertainment and the Internet, it’s got all the basics covered. Beyond that, there are a handful of “essential” apps most Mac owners install on a new machine within minutes of booting it up for the first time. Handbrake is undoubtedly one of those essentials. And it just got a serious new upgrade.

Handbrake is a very handy (pun intended) DVD-ripping utility that converts DVDs to self-contained video files that can be played back on a computer or mobile device. (Contrary to the outright lies of major motion picture studios, there’s nothing wrong with having digital backups of movies you already own). In addition, DVDs can be converted into a number of formats, resolutions and aspect ratios. For many years, it has served as the single easiest way to get my movies off-of DVD discs and onto my iPods, iPhones and even my PSP.

The latest release, Handbrake 0.9.4, includes support for Snow Leopard, and is also available in 64-bit editions for both Leopard and Snow Leopard. It also adds the ability to include multiple subtitle tracks to exported video and a new “live preview” for viewing the likely outcome of an export before committing to a lengthy rip.

According to the release notes on the Handbrake website, the latest version includes new features like “macroblock tree rate control” and “weighted P-Frame prediction.” I’ve absolutely no idea what any of that means, and although they do provide links to explanatory articles, it made my head swim. I’ll just assume it’s all very swish and futuristic and good for my rips.

The introduction of a 64-bit version is good news for those of us using true 64-bit multi-core processors, though the performance increase is a fairly modest 10 percent. The software also supports non-DVD encoding, which is great news for those of us who do a lot of video editing. (I prefer to use Final Cut but often have to import raw data into iMovie only to export it out to a format Final Cut will accept. Handbrake won’t cut out this extra conversion step, but it performs far faster than the monolith that is iMovie and provides more flexibility in export formats.)

It’s not all about video, either. Handbrake offers great audio encoding options, including the newly-added ability to encode AAC using OS X’s Core Audio (which means far higher quality than was possible previously).

Of course, there are a lot of other software titles that offer similar functionality (Aimersoft’s popular DVD Ripper, for instance) but Handbrake is free. Although this means it has no official support, it does enjoy an active and enthusiastic user community so if you get stuck you won’t have far to go to find answers and help.

If you are using a 64 bit machine and want to get the full 64-bit goodness from Handbrake, you’ll need the 64-bit version of VLC Player, the latest nightly builds of which can be found here. (Please note that VLC Player 64-bit is beta software and as such offers no end-user support.) Handbrake 0.9.4 is available from the Handbrake website now.

I am slightly disgruntled that this blog only sees the more geeky side of me, and all of the more normal posts get pushed to other services, blogs and the sort.  The reason behind this is because I feel like the vast landscape of the posts outside of this blog are should be veiled in some sort of anonymity.   Although there is nothing inherently wrong with the posts, I have many reasons to believe that the posts can cause more issues than their are worth being linked to my name and thus get pushed to other posts.   I assume from some quick sleuthing work one can determine some sort of correlation in my posting times, or some sort of inverse relation between posting here and other places.

That said,  bring on the video games.     This week has been pretty awesome.   New computer,  with a 9800gt video card.  so far every game that I have played I have just cranked it up to ultra and played.    Although my sleep schedule has been pretty aberrant, I have not been happier for a long time now.     It is a quad core i7 with 8 effective cores due to hyper threading.  Also 6GB of ram, and 750gb of hd.  in general it is very quiet, except for a nice fun gaming session, but even still this is blocked out by my sound system.

In addition to gaming I have begun to do virtualization of node03 and the sort so that I can start developing again.   I have been living with vista for a bit, since windows 7 is in the mail.   HP has a program giving away copies of 7 for people who bought hp machines.   The three main issues I have with the current machine have nothing to do with the hardware, but the software.

1.) Vista 64bit, still is fucking awful.   Some of the HP software is fighting with it, and I will run into random programs dieing from time to time.   Although you might say that this is the fault of the third parties, however vista will just crash from time to time, with nothing running.    I am hoping that windows fixes this somewhat.  but I guess that I more believe that the computing  industry is going though this growing pain of transitioning to 64bit, and that is causing a huge issue on many sides of computing.   on the linux box at work, IDL segfaults every time that I quit.  on Snow Leopard, Marc has many issues with all the normal things that work on my 10.5 box.  and so forth.  I had some though that  they would sandbox all of the 32 bit programs and only allow 64bit tested programs out of it, to save many of the issues with this conversion.    Honestly I do not know what is the root cause of all of these issues, but it seems like that is the majority of the problems.

2.)  Windows Update.   For years I have left windows update off, since it would sometimes cause issues with drivers and windows pushing instable security fixes.  I have left in on to find that it is god awful.  it will decides to take a full core or two to install an update, and lock up the disk.   (ok, I guess this would be an hardware issue, but a minor one if Windows was not a fucking hog)   And one would think that they are not pushing out that many updates, but that I have a new machines…  no.  over the last three days I have updated every day with some other inane update, all of which was after a full 4 hours of downloading and installing updates the day I received the machine.

3.)  Norton Internet Security.  Every time I go back to the main stream anti virus companies, I understand why people are scared of computers  in general.   NIS leaves lots of the understanding and just pushes crazy amounts of warnings to users.  Like it flagged a downloaded file, as being bad, but said nothing about where it was, or what the file name was without some extra clicking.  Besides it bubbly yellow interferences,  it kills the disk bandwidth by scanning all the time, slowing down this fast computer.  (honestly, I have not even come close to maxing out the system and although I have enough cores now not to notice as much, I do notices a huge disk usage drain.)   Earlier I was just browsing the web, and the disk was a frenzy doing  whatever Norton thought was best for the system.

But other than that,  Games have been amazing.  Dirt, Burnout Paradise and Torchlight have all blown me away how nice, and awesome the game play has been.

ps.  Since original onyx, is pretty much all but down for the count,  I have decided to replace onyx with this machine. [ AMD K6 processors with 96mb of ram, is not worth resurrecting  at the time being. ]     This might change when I go to seven, as that I have always been a fan of se7en.

Linksys has not yet released any Windows 7 drivers thus far for the WMP110 Wireless Adapter. My initial experience with the WMP110 wireless adapter has been extremely poor. The only assistance from Linksys Technical Support was to “check the linksys support website frequently as there is no information available on release dates for Windows 7 drivers”. The Linksys forums are flooded wtih people looking for Windows 7 support

After searching for a work-around solution I finally arrived at a post in the official Linksys support forums: “Hi, it’s Shujinko again from post #10.  I got the Version 1.0 of this product to work with Vista x64. I saw a few posts in other threads about folks using the Atheros AR5008 chipset driver instead of the Linksys one.  Long story short, after finally finding the correct version of that driver, it worked!  The driver you are looking for is the Atheros 7.6.1.204 driver.  I find mine here…”  

So a huge thanks goes out to Shujinko, as it turns out a current solution to getting the WMP110 functioning properly is to install the Atheros AR5008 7.6.1.204 Vista x64 driver manually. No thanks to Linksys here are the steps below to getting the WMP110 wireless adapter to work on Windows 7 64bit:

 Important Note: Do not use the Linksys WMP110 Installation CD . If you already have installed the software & or driver from the CD, remove the software and uninstall the adapter in the device manager.

Step 1: Download  atheros_vista_x64_7.6.1.204.rar (314.66K) and extract files.
Step 2: Insert WMP110 Wireless Adapter into PCI slot and start up your pc. Windows 7 will detect card and automatically install a driver if available.
*If your computer hangs/freezes after windows automatically installs a driver, reboot machine and enter safe mode (without networking). To enter safe mode press F8 while during Windows 7 boot. Follow same steps below in safe mode*
Step 3: Open device manager. Click start -> Run -> mmc devmgmt.msc
Step 4: Locate the WMP110 wireless adapter in the device manager. 
Click Network Adapters -> Right click Linksys WMP110 Wireless Adapter -> Click Update Driver Software
*It may also be under Other devices -> Right click PCI Device(!) (with an exclamation/yellow icon) -> Click Update Driver Software* 
Step 5: Choose “Browse My Computer for Driver Software.”
Step 6: Choose “Let Me Pick From a List of Device Drivers on My Computer”
Step 7: Click Have Disk button
Step 8: Click Browse and locate the folder where you extracted the Atheros Vista x64 7.6.1.204 driver and click the OK button.
Step 9: Scroll through the list of devices in box on the right hand side and select”Atheros AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter” and click the Next button.
Step 10: On the compatibility warning pop-up click OK, to install device driver anyways.
Step 11: Congrats on a succesful install, your network card should now function properly. Don’t worry the Linksys WMP110 will be identified as an Atheros AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter by Windows 7. Use this driver until Linksys releases an official Windows 7 driver for the WMP110.

Time Required: <2 minutes

You might be missing some of your old plugins, or simply wanting to install Shockwave. Either way, with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard – You’re going to need Safari back in 32-bit mode to handle the old input managers.

Here is a short 3 step guide to doing just that:

1. Navigate to Safari in your dock and ‘Command+Click’ or, find it in the Applications folder

2. Right Click on Safari and click “Get Info” (or for the savvy, ‘Command+I’)

3. Check off “Open in 32-bit Mode”

4. Pat yourself on the back, you’re good to go!

This same process can be used for a variety of applications, you will notice all your old 32-bit plugins (Safari AdBlock, Glims, and Inquisitor) will be working again.

It’s quite amazing for the speed of Mac apps transition to 64bit. Now all my apps other than LaunchBar and DropBox are all 64-bit an I think Windows app can never catch it.

Microsoft is set to release six security bulletin patches this coming Tuesday. Three of the six have been labeled as Critical, Microsoft’s highest security rating, and three more patches labeled as Important, the second highest security rating.

The patches are due to release on November 10 and will focus on patching Remote Code Executions and DoS (Denial of Service) flaws in the Windows operating system. Four of the patches will be released for Windows, while two will patch Remote Code Executions in Microsoft Office.

The patches will fix security holes in:

• Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
• Windows XP Service Pack 2 & 3 *
• Windows Vista Service Pack 1 & 2 *
• Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 *
• Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 *
• Microsoft Office XP

• Microsoft Office 2007
• Microsoft Office 2004 (Mac)

No updates for Windows 7 will be released. Currently, Windows 7 only has one officially released security patch, released on October 8, 2009.

The computer is a modified Dell Mini 9.  It has 2 GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD instead of the stock config.  I had Windows 7 Release Candidate (7RC) on it since 7RC came out.

It was quite a bit of work getting 7RC on the Mini 9.  This time around, things got simpler.  (See this blog for the exact steps: http://liveviews.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!ACAA9A3B4D2792FE!1526.entry)  Basically, pop in a USB or SD card, use the DISCPART tool in Windows to partition and format it so it is bootable, copy the installation disc over.  Done!

I had absolutely nothing stored on the Mini 9 so no cleaning/backup necessary.  I pop the USB stick in, boot install and everything was done.  It did took a while as the Mini 9 is quite a bit slower.  Again, I went with 32 bit Windows 7 and MS Security Essentials.

That was it, really, it is that simple.

The computer is a Dell XPS 630i.  Nothing unusual, no special hardware.  This is my gaming box so it has a Nvidia GTX 285.  I had Windows 7 Release Candidate (7RC) on it since I bought it.

There wasn’t much to prep as I knew this day will come so I didn’t install much on it.  And over the past year or two, I have progressively move the important things (documents, music, family pictures, etc.) to the NAS.  There were a few software installed, nothing I couldn’t re-download so I just made a note.  I did exported the Internet Explorer favorites and cookies.

Opened the Windows 7 Professional (7Pro) box.  My first question was: 32 or 64bit?  I never did tried any of the 64bit Windows primarily because apps and software had been behind for years.  I never thought they’ve caught up yet.  More on that in a bit.  But 64 bit it is!

Pop the disc.  Error!  64bit installation cannot run off of my 32bit 7RC.  Okay.  Reboot from disc.

The installation is actually painless.  It took a little while but it configured everything, drives, network, even screen resolution.  I still can’t get over how long it took Microsoft to get Windows installation routine to self configure screen resolution.  Geesh.

Throughout the Windows 7 beta and RC, one of the sore point for me was antivirus.  Microsoft recently released Security Essentials.  I’ve used it for a few weeks.  Honestly I don’t know how well it worked as there is no track record.  But it is generally well-behaved, doesn’t bother me much.  And it didn’t slow down the machine even when I’m doing mass copy or play games.  So I’m ditching Norton, Trend Micro, etc.

Downloaded and installed MS Security Essentials.  It updated and was ready.  Sweet.

Adobe Reader.  No issue.

DVD43.  Oops.  This puppy does not run in 64 bit.  Web search revealed that this is a known issue and no fix in sight (some say not likely to have one).  Hmmm… Doesn’t Win7 have XP Mode or something?  Went to MS and found it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Downloaded and installed XP Mode, then Virtual PC, configured one.  It took quite a while but was interesting enough.  Redownloaded  class=”hiddenSpellError” pre=”Redownloaded “>DVD43, installed.  Pop a DVD in the drive.  Hmmm…. not working.  DVD43 running inside the Virtual PC cannot detect the DVD… at this point, it was 2 hours into the whole thing… bah, I was right, with the stuff I need to run, 64bit is just going to cause more problem.  Back to 32bit!

Pop the disc in, reboot, start from scratch. … some time later … I was back where I was.  This time DVD43 worked fine, as are Handbrake, PDF Creator, etc.  Ran Windows Update, 7 patches down and it is all set.

Aside from the 64 vs 32bit thing, it was relatively painless.

Working with 64 bit environment is a pain. Most of the drivers fail to work. After having a bad experience with Microsoft Jet driver, now it was Oracle.

The code I am working on makes use of ODP.NET 10g. There is a reference to the Oracle.DataAccess.dll and the “Copy Local” property in the references is set to true. When I ran this application in Windows XP (32 bit) things worked fine.

When I deployed the published code on the Windows 2008 64 bit environment, I got the following error message:

Could not load file or assembly ‘Oracle.DataAccess’ or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.

On looking further I got to know all I had to do was remove the dll from the bin older so that the 64 bit version of the assembly could be used.

One issue resolved, some more to fix.

Alternatively, I haven’t tried this, but I suppose if I set the Application Pool in IIS 7 to 32 bit, this would still work.

When executing 32bit application on 64bit Windows, you’ll get an error message.

In this case, copy the below commands and execute them in a command prompts.

By default το Snow Leopard μπουταρει σε 32bit πυρήνα σε όλα τα μηχανήματα εκτός των XServe.

Η Apple έχει μια λίστα με συμβατά μηχανήματα που μπορούν να μπουτάρουν σε 64 bit πυρήνα και την οποία μπορείτε να την βρείτε εδώ.

Βέβαια, υπάρχουν και άλλα Mac που μπορούν να να μπουταρουν σε 64 bit πυρήνα Αρκεί να έχουν 64bit EFI και φυσικά Core 2 Duo επεξεργαστή. Εδώ να σημειώσουμε ότι σε ότι mode και να μπουταρει το σύστημα όλες οι εφαρμογές τρέχουν στα 64 bit, οπότε δεν είναι υποχρεωτική η εκκίνηση του συστήματος σε 64 bit πυρήνα.

Μετά από λίγο ψάξιμο λοιπόν βρήκα ένα πολύ χρήσιμο προγραμματακι το οποίο σε πρώτη φάση ενημερώνει τον χρήστη αν το Mac είναι στην λίστα της Apple με τα συστήματα που μπορούν να μπουταρουν με 64 bit πυρήνα. Στην συνέχεια ενημερώνει για το αν το EFI και ο επεξεργαστής είναι 32 ή 64 bit και τέλος το σημαντικότερο είναι ότι σου επιτρέπει να επιλέξεις αν θα μπουταρεις το σύστημα σου σε 64 bit ακόμα και αν αυτό δεν βρίσκεται στην σχετική λίστα με τα συμβατά Mac.

My silly habit to check if any program running is not transferred to 64bit. Actually it proves that the move is very smooth and transparent. If you don’t check, you never know!!

Why are we still stuck on 32bit servers? Is there anyone out there that can come up with a good argument based on fact to not use 64bit? Personally I have not heard any good ones.  I can understand if your stuck with 32bit licenses.  Hopefully you are not stuck with a 32bit mind site.  If you are starting/building from scratch, please use 64bit everything on your servers.
