Heaven, Under The Arches, London, November 18, 2009…

On first impressions Heaven seemed an unlikely venue for instrumental post/math rockers 65daysofstatic. Host to legendary night G.A.Y. and typically showcasing artists such as Kylie Minogue and Girls Aloud, the venue- emblazoned with posters advertising Porn Idol and the next week’s latest X-Factor reject- seemed a mile away from 65dos’s math rock offerings…

Yet once inside Heaven these initial thoughts were forgotten. Apart from the odd mosaic male torso that adorned the walls here and there, the cool underground vibe of the venue took over and musings of Heaven’s usual musical fare were soon discarded. Completely constructed of red brick, and residing underneath Charing Cross Station, the club’s windowless railway arches and hidden coves made the perfect setting for 65dos’s instrumental shenanigans.

A bit of histoire for those of you unfamiliar with the band… 65daysofstatic, also known as 65dos, 65days or the perfectly simple 65, formed in Sheffield in 2001. The band, who were originally a three-piece, is made up of Joe Shrewsbury (guitar), Paul Wolinski (guitar & programming), Rob Jones (drums) and Simon Wright (bass). Since 2004 the band have released three full-length albums, The Fall of Math (2004), One Time for All Time (2005), and The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007). They have also released the EPs Stumble.Stop.Repeat (2003), Hole (2005) and The Distant And Mechanised Glow Of European Dance Parties (2008) and released a live album in 2008 entitled Escape From New York. Their music is interspersed with heavy, progressive guitars, and mixed with drums, samplers, computer glitches, keyboards and the occasional voiceover. According to legend 65dos’s name originates from the band’s desire to record a soundtrack for John Carpenter’s unreleased fictional film Stealth Bomber, which is said to have been produced over 65 days of static. Other rumours say that the band named themselves after a 1950s CIA coup d’etat in Guatemala who claimed that 65 days was all that was needed to overthrow a country. Whether you want to believe that is up to you…

Heaven, Under The Arches.

Having to get a six o’ clock train out of Cardiff, then getting lost in the labyrinth that it Charing Cross Underground meant that I only arrived at Heaven at nine… and wandered in just as support act Three Trapped Tigers were exiting the stage. I also missed this band at (Sŵn), so I was rather gutted, but not for long as the rather awesome DJ filled the time with his Bloc Party meets Telepathe remixes.

65dos are one of those bands you have to see live to appreciate the full extent of their musical capability. Although whacking up the volume of The Fall of Math in your bedroom creates some pretty amazing sounds, the 65 live experience is one that cannot be replicated. Starting promptly at 9.15, as promised, meant that their hour and 35 minute set did not overrun, and thus cause me to miss either the last train home, or even worse the end of the gig.

Starting with their first single Retreat! Retreat! 65 demonstrated from the onset that their unique instrumental sound can be both brutal and beautiful. Although there are neither vocals nor lyrics, these usual attributes are rendered unnecessary when 65dos take to the stage. From the barrage of drum beats and guitar shreds, the set took a change of pace with the first minute and a half of the next song, Drove Through Ghosts To Get Here. Beginning with the well-known dulcet keyboard melodies, before descending into the drum and bass-like ending of the song proved a huge crowd pleaser.

Despite not playing Betraying Chino, one of my favourite 65 tracks, the band seamlessly blended old favourites, such as The Fall Of Math, Fix The Sky A Little and When We Were Younger And Better with new, yet unnamed material, which Joe explained was taken from their as-yet untitled forthcoming album. Whether playing soft and melodic keyboard solos, or huge Prodigy-esque dance numbers, such as 65 Doesn’t Understand You, the band had the crowd captivated. It was amazing to watch the audience’s reactions; one minute they collectively stood still in admiration, the next they were going crazy and chanting ‘65′ with clamour.

Despite the lack of lyrics, Joe had no trouble talking to the masses in between instrument changes. In one particular lull, when Paul had to run off stage to fix a technical issue, Joe began rambling on, and even said “Looks like heaven really is a place on earth…” before erupting with laughter and continuing his penchant for wild dancing.

Yet jokes and laughter aside, the moment the whole crowd had been anticipating arrived when 65dos returned on stage for their final song of the night. Prolonging the beautiful, yet haunting keyboard introduction to Radio Protector for almost four minutes was anything but tedious, and kept the crowd on edge waiting and craving the moment when the guitars and drums kicked in for what was certainly the best moment of the night. Gradually turning up the volume, then slowly adding more instruments, 65dos had the crowd in the palm of their hand as they finally reached the song’s powerful climax of all four instruments merging together. The song’s break down echoed the same sense of shared euphoria that was visible in the room, and as the band left the stage to huge ovation and thunderous chants of ‘65′ from the whole crowd, the enormity of the 65dos experience hit me. The fact that there was only a one-song encore did not matter, as I don’t think that 65daysofstatic could have ended the gig any better way. If only I could have stayed to savour the moment instead of having to make a dash for the Bakerloo line…

Another computer-unrelated post.

The reason I’ve been in Manchester for the past week or so, is for my love of live music. You don’t really get that in the North of Devon as such, and if you do, then it’s usually some form of low-key entertainment – possibly good, but no reason to travel down the road for (bearing in mind the road is a good 2km or so).

So I’ve already been to see Faithless at the Warehouse Project last weekend (rather disappointing I admit, but I got tickets for free), and a small band from Sheffield by the name of 65DaysOfStatic (absolutely amazing).

But the main act was tonight, and he’s a Japanese pianist, by the name of Ryuichi Sakamoto. Seeing him at the Bridgewater Hall is one day I will always remember. The acoustics were brilliant, and the stage decorated with a large projection screen providing visual entertainment, is just a highlight of many. As for Sakamoto himself, he was flawless.

If you don’t understand the pure beauty of the this track, then I pity you, I do.

i’m definitely buying tickets to 65DOS because i love them too much

now i’ve got to find my resolve on whether to go for Muse or The Killers or both. i’m personally rooting for Muse because The Resistance is good while The Killers.. well.. Haha, who knows right. or i’ll probably just go for 65dos and skip muse + the killers.

Non me ne vogliano.

Raccolgo i brividi e li annego in un sorso d’acqua. Mi alzo e torno indietro. Lontano. A nascondermi.

Man mano che i bambini ci restavano secchi, i saggi del consiglio diedero disposizioni affinché qualcuno li sistemasse in fila, davanti all’aiuola.

Voce metallica? Voce metallica che ne pensi? Può bastare per ora?
Voce metallica e disinteressata: “per ora”.

Everybody should give the instrumental post-rock genre a listen once, there’s something for everybody and with so many great bands around at the moment such as Mono, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You, 65daysofstatic etc we’re spoilt for choice.

One band that has been making a steady name for themselves over the last few years is Northern Irish group And So I Watch You From Afar. Their debut self-titled album came out early this year on Smalltown America Records; eleven ear-shattering and beautifully epic songs showcasing the band’s technical prowess. To prove my point here’s a cool official video for the opening track Set Guitars To Kill on their album.

Give them a try; you’ll be blown away and no doubt have bleeding eardrums by the end of it. Now set those guitars to kill!

The Fall Of Math

Grazie a tutti questi fattori, i 65daysofstatic riescono a raggiungere, uscendo fuori dagli schemi, sorprendenti soluzioni musicali che difficilmente lasceranno indifferente l’ascoltatore.

I haven’t heard the album yet, but what a freakin’ name.

The ensemble is named 65daysofstatic. We already know what you’re thinking: with monikers like these banging around in their orbit, too-clever-by-half, these guys better bring it musically. But we assure you. It’s brought. (That is what you were thinking, though, right? Right?)

As we speak I’m tinkering around in their Myspace space. “Radio Protector,” from their 2005 LP One Time For All Time, starts out as a bittersweet and logical piano lick and then explodes in the sky, if you get me. “Primer” adds a bit of a jazz primer, and is taken from their most recent studio LP, The Destruction of Small Ideas. (Well, then!)

The “Dance Parties [Distant]” remix of “The Distant and Mechanised Glow of Eastern European Dance Parties” (I’m telling you, these names are a music blogger’s wet dream: the copy literally writes itself)…

Finally, from the totem LP, comes “I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood.” This is a large and expertly-detailed work. Don’t miss it on your trip. I’m tempted to embed the live version below, but instead, why don’t you just click…?

2007 aastal andis 65dos välja albumi The Destruction of Small Ideas.

Praeguseks on lisandunud väga palju elektroonilisi elemente.

Esimesest minutist alates on kuulaja muusika külge aheldatud.

Mina sain enda eksemplari siit:

Niente voci, parlano solo chitarre e synth.

Guest writer on the blog today, people. Cameron, our supercool work experience boy for the week, would like to tell you about a band he loves, Texas post-rockers This Will Destroy You. Young Cameron is also in a pretty ace band himself, which you can check out here – www.myspace.com/westolecairo .

Over to Cameron…

This Will Destroy You

This Will Destroy You may not sound like the most coaxing name for a band, and it certainly does not match the music that they make. Originally forming in 2005, as a 4 piece post-rock, instrumental band. They immediately got to work on their first demo, only for it to be released as their first EP, ‘Young Mountain’ in 2006. The EP provided generally good reviews, and their most famous track to date, ‘There are Some Remedies Worse than the Disease’. Soon after they released their, self titled, debut album in January 2008. Although receiving some mixed reviews, the general reception of the album was good, and they acquired a fairly large fanbase.

The feel of the album is one of disturbed ambiance. With the subtle rising and falling of echoed guitars, plastered with reverb and sounds that Matt Bellamy would be pushed to create. Only to then be hit with a wall of distortion, as if you had awoken a bear from hibernation. The shear force and emotion that they deliver without any lyrics is unreal. They have taken the mellowness of Sigur Ros and merged it with the electric distorted noise of 65daysofstatic.

This Will Destroy You are not another instrumental band who simply think they do not need singer. They use their instruments as if they were the only things saving them from death. Intricacy wraps itself around each song, providing a different feel to each song, yet they still have a firm hold on what the band are doing. Songs such as, ‘Burial on the Presidio Banks’ are enough to bring grown men to tears. While, ‘Leather Wings’ has a more simplified feel to it. It simply provides a completely enjoyable and relaxing listen from beginning to end. As the ethereal tones of, ‘A Three-Legged Work Horse’ cascade in at the beginning of the album, you can tell that it will be one hell of a ride until the distorted blaze of ‘Burial on the Presidio Banks’ fades out.
So yes, they will destroy you, but for all the right reasons.

Openen deed Joe Gideon & The Shark.

Quotering: ****

Qua klederdracht was Joan As Police Woman alvast een opmerkelijke act.

Voornamelijk nummers uit cd1 zoals Hang Me Up To Dry, We Used To Vacation en Saint John konden bekoren.
Quotering: ***(*)

The Best Is Yet To Come werd alvast het meezingmoment van zaterdag.
Quotering: ****

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.

Power means nothing without precision. The huge, headstomping, heartshaking noise that 65days generate is shaped and sharpened by the extraordinary unity of their playing. When they speak to the crowd between songs, it’s with the relaxed tone of people doing something they love with friends; when they play, it’s with gang fury, bound by sound and storming the audience. From the first note of the set, 65days are incredibly loud, and they never back down – the audience cheers ecstatic throughout (but especially when Radio Protector and Retreat! Retreat! come out) and it’s obvious that this crowd belongs to 65days. We want them to be bigger, noisier, fiercer, to fill us with sound and make us a part of their explosion. The electronic sounds that squall on record, thunder live; the band play with huge gestures, guitar necks blurring and drumsticks raised high, but never with any slack. Astonishing.
