As shown in the above screen capture, I’m using Remote Buddy to start Brad Anderson’s Transsiberian — which is currently residing in my iTunes “Rented Movies” folder — from my couch!

(It always kind of annoyed me that you couldn’t start an iTunes Movie Rental from within the Front Row program to play on your Mac.)

I made the mouse cursor huge (via the Mac Mini’s System Preferences window) so I could see it more easily from 10 feet away — and also used Remote Buddy’s “mousespot” feature to highlight it.

NOTE:
Transsiberian is the first ever HD movie to grace my Mac Mini Media Center.

I rented this film from the iTunes store on special for $1.99 (again without leaving my couch).

The image quality (720p) is превосходный (excellent).

I came across the Pentax K-x last week and thought it was worth a mention.  Not only is it packed with some nice features such as a 12megapixal sensor, but it also shoots 720p video, a feature being seen on more DSLR bodies.  What really made this camera stand out was the bright Red finish.  Yeah, maybe I am a little geeky for liking this, but I think the camera looks sharp.  In fact I would love to get one of these in my hands for some real world testing.  Unfortunately it looks like only the kit lens 18-55mm comes in the matching red finish, leaving you to fill in with normal black for the rest of your zoom range.  The kit is also available in navy, black and white.

Great news, everyone!

My Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-L32X1 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV is suitable after all for my Mac Mini Home Theater (or media server).

After I hooked my Mac mini to my 720p HDTV, I was really perplexed to see that the image was cut off on all four sides.

My menubar was almost completely off the screen (but still usable).

This is due to a process called overscanning which defines the “TV Safe Zone” which originated because ye olde CRT TVs could not display a picture properly all the way to the edge of the screen.

[ Overscan is officially defined as the extra image area around the four edges of a video image that is not normally seen by the viewer. ]

There are tools such as DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX that you can use to customize and control your Mac mini’s screen resolution and (in theory) get your mini’s screen to display properly on a 720p HDTV screen.

I gave both of these utilities a tumble but both seemed a bit over my head.

(And I lacked the necessary patience / intestinal fortitude to figure them out.)

Hey-O, I wanted to watch HD movies, DVDs, My Netflix watch instantly queue, classic TV shows (via Hulu), Blondie music videos and other neat stuff on my Panasonic (and not muck around with screen resolutions, gamma Ghzs and whatnot).

Then I finally read in some forum that I could use adjust screen preferences in PLEX (which is the virtual doorway to my Mac Mini media empire) to get all of my media to display correctly on my 720p HDTV screen.

Yowza!

My slacker heart was all a flutter because my Mac mini is a living room centerpiece / media server only.

(My trusty and stalwart iMac is my computing workhorse.)

This being the case I don’t need my menubar and program dock to display correctly on my HDTV.

And I’m using Remote Buddy to control my Mac mini from the couch (no need for menus or the program dock to launch the necessary apps.)

Miałem w swoich rękach urządzenie jak w tytule, testowałem przez weekend. Muszę przyznać, że podszedłem do niego z dużymi nadziejami gdyż od dłuższego czasu chodzi mi po głowie zakup MediaPlayera bez dysku twardego.

Takie urządzenie zwykle kupujemy do odtwarzania materiału HD  (720p) i FullHD (1080p). Zwykle materiał ten przychodzi w kontenerze Matroska (mkv). Taki też materiał użyłem do testów.

W kilku punktach scharakteryzuje co player potrafi a czego nie…

• Nie odtwarza materiału Matroska FullHD z dysku wpiętego do USB, przerywa (szarpie obraz i dźwięk) po 10 sekundach odtwarzania. Testowane na dwóch dyskach przenośnych.
• Odtwarza materiał Matroska FullHD z udziałów sieciowych SMB/Samba. Robi to szybko i sprawnie, ale potrafi w połowie filmu zerwać połączenie i nie próbuje go wznowić lecz wyłącza odtwarzanie a po 10. sekundach robi restart. Szok! Dość powiedzieć, że na tym urządzeniu nie udało mi się obejrzeć ani jednego filmu mkv/1080p do końca
• Odtwarza DVD z .iso oraz z folderu. Pozwala na zmianę języka napisów i dźwięku.
• Odtwarza Matroski z możliwością zmiany języka napisów i języka ścieżki dźwiękowej.
• Odtwarza DivX/Xvid, ale to potrafią najtańsze DVD Playery Manty
• Bardzo ładne, szybkie i czytelne menu.
• Urządzenie jest ciche. Może to się zmienić w trakcie pracy gdyż malutkie wiatraczki mają to do siebie, że szybko się “zacierają”.
• HDMI 1.3 z HDCP.
• Coaxial i Optical Audio Out.
• Obsługuje systemy plików NTFS i Ext3.

Jeśli potrzebujesz Mediaplayer, który odtwarza DVD i DivX/Xvid, polecam Ci to urządzenie. Z matroską i materiałem FullHD sobie nie radzi.

UWAGA: Producent zapewnia, że pozbędzie się tych mankamentów w nowej odsłonie Firmware. Do tego czasu ja tego urządzenia nie kupuję i NIE polecam.
