What a day I had yesterday. I played in an all day tournament at the University of California Irvine, I had a lot of fun. There was a lot of action during the day, from the interesting mellow drama of my transportation, to the mini series of events during the games. Throughout it all I learned a lot of new things about myself and about reality.

I began the day on a journey from Corona to San Bernardino then back to Irvine. I really didn’t know where the ARC (Anteater Recreation Center) was but I had a general idea of where the school was from memory. As I left to Irvine from San Bernardino I ended up in a construction area that had the freeway narrowed down to one lane. Normally I would be worried and panicking, because I was supposed to be at the gym at 9Am, and let’s just say…”I wasn’t going to make it there by 9Am.”

So instead of worrying, I kicked back, put on some music that reminded me of happiness, and I went with the flow. After I made it through the traffic it was straight coasting all the way through. Time flies when you are having, fun, or maybe it doesn’t exist. I eventually arrived at the campus of UCI and I had no idea where to go.

This was yet another example of how worrying would get me  nowhere. The cool thing was I just felt my way to the center. I had no directions and I had never been there before. I was tempted to ask these two ladies where it was but something told me to go with my gut. As a backup plan I would ask someone, because there was no shortage of people walking around, but I decided to go with my instincts.

Somehow by listening to my inner compass I found the ARC without a problem. Which was a huge relief, instantly I began to realize that maybe I know things that I don’t think I know. All of this goes well with previous things I have blogged about. But anyway, back to the subject.

The tournament ends and I have to go back to San bernardino, which is about an hour or more from where I was. It was dark outside and I found myself lost. Not really lost, but confused I guess you could say. I didn’t feel a knowing for where I was. Plus I didn’t know the street names. All I knew was I needed to get back to the 73 freeway.

So I head out in a direction and I feel like I am headed the wrong direction on a street named Culver, but I second guess myself and keep going. I decided to stop at a gas station and admit to myself that I didn’t know where I was. I go inside of the gas station in an attempt to ask directions.

I’m literally waiting in line for ten minutes behind this guy who is having a full on conversation with the clerk. I was tempted for a second to get angry, but then I calmed myself. I thought to myself, “What’s the point in being upset, I’m here this is happening right now so just chill and relax. Stop worrying there is nothing you can do to change it, so change your attitude. Enjoy this moment, maybe you will learn something. Besides your anger is in your imagination anyway.”

As soon as I finish that dialogue in my head, another clerk comes out from the back and asks to help me. I slide myself over to him and explain that I somehow got turned around and I’m looking for the 73 freeway. The clerk looks at me and has no answer, he looks at the other clerk, who also has no answer. Before I can even think, the same guy who was in front of me starts politely explaining to me where the 73 freeway was. All I had to do was turn around on Culver and keep going until I ran into it.

I thanked the gentleman three times and left him with a “Have a great night!” This was really cool to me, because I realized that without worrying everything worked itself out. But wait, there is more, this is were the story gets even better. I go all the way down Culver for what seemed like forever and I get to the 73 freeway.

Now before when I came up the 73 I didn’t have to pay a toll, and so I wasn’t event thinking about having to pay a toll. It was the last thing to cross my mind. I’m not paying attention to signs, I just hop on the onramp because I’m already late as it is getting back to San Bernardino. Then I start seeing these lights and a sign that says toll. I’m like “uh oh,” because I have no money on me. All I have is my debit card which is in the negative at the moment.

Naturally I start getting worried because there is this big sign that says $500 fine for people who go through the toll without paying. So for a brief 30 seconds I get worried. I mean how do I turn around on an onramp? So I start to calm down and I decide that I should just back up slowly with my hazards on because at this point I’m the only person on the road. I actually found 20 cents in the car but the toll was $1. So I’m calmed down and start telling myself not to worry because there is always a solution.

Then I see the headlights of a car, they pull up right behind me. Im sitting there, I look back in the rear view, they look at me, I look at them, they look at me, I look at them…I thought to myself that I was in a good situation because the young lady behind me was a pretty one and I could feel that she had a genuine care for others. All materialistic things aside however I thought to myself it would be awkward if I got out the car and asked for her help.

“So I looked back and said “Would you mind if I backed up and turned around?”

She said  “No I can back up, do you need me to?”

I was like “Yeah I’m a little lost and I wasn’t aware that this was a toll, I don’t have any cash on me.”

This young lady says not to “worry” about it she has a dollar in change to spare me.

I was like wow.

All I could say was Thank you several times, and I wished her a great night.

Out of all the people to run into at that time when there was nobody else on the road.She even told me she only hops on this part of the freeway to go down a couple exits.

And that my friends is how NOT worrying saved me from a $500 Fine.

I senaste avsnittet av Babel var det ett välformulerat samtal om Riksteaterns uppsättning av Lars Noréns pjäs 7:3 (1999). Pjäsen sattes upp med professionella skådespelare och interner från Kriminalvården som framförde sina egna nationalsocialistiska åsikter. En av de kriminella rymde och deltog i morden i Malexander.

Med i samtalet i Babel deltog teaterchef Linus Tunström, journalist och författare Elisabeth Åsbrink och kulturjournalist Per Svensson. Samtalet rörde sig kring frågan om detta var ett möjligt projekt eller inte. Och om de som deltog var delansvariga i morden på Malexander eller inte. Svaret är så klart inte entydigt så ni måste se samtalet själva, men det jag vill lyfta fram är två snabba repliker som bara passerade utan att någon högg tag i dem:

- Vad händer med en människa som får upprepa fem repliker med sina egna nazistiska åsikter och dessa enda repliker beskriver en själv? Blir den enda bilden av en själv?

- Hur var det att möta publikens massiva hat?

Jag tror att något händer. Jag tror att det är svårt att hantera detta inom sig själv. Det kan ha lett till övervåldet i Malexander. Det kan det.

PS. Upprinnelsen till att Babel uppmärksammar 7:3 just nu är att det är tio år sedan det hände, Uppsala Stadsteater sätter upp pjäsen 7:3 Återbesöket och Elisabeth Åsbrink har kommit ut med boken Smärtpunkten som beskriver skeendet och låter de inblandade komma till tals.

Hora de mais uma parte do 7.3. Trataremos agora das entradas de projeto e desenvolvimento, o item 7.3.2, cujo texto está destacado em vermelho:

7.3.2 Entradas de projeto e desenvolvimento

As entradas relativas a requisitos de produto devem ser determinadas e registros devem ser mantidos (ver 4.2.4).

Essas entradas devem incluir
a) requisitos de funcionamento e de desempenho,
b) requisitos estatutários e regulamentares aplicáveis,
c) onde aplicável, informações originadas de projetos anteriores semelhantes, e
d) outros requisitos essenciais para projeto e desenvolvimento.

As entradas devem ser analisadas criticamente quanto à suficiência. Requisitos devem ser completos, sem ambigüidades e não conflitantes entre si.

Se você baixou o formulário que indiquei no artigo anterior, verá que ele tem campos para todas as entradas. Se não baixou, leia o artigo anterior antes clicando aqui e aproveite para pegar o seu.

As entradas relativas a requisitos de produto devem ser determinadas e registros devem ser mantidos (ver 4.2.4).
Antes de mais nada, é importante saber que a norma pede que existam registros do projeto desde o seu início. Portanto, o planejamento já é o começo deste registro. O formulário sugerido é uma boa solução porque já mantém estes registros desde o início. Antes de falar mais sobre isso, vamos ver cada tipo de entrada que um projeto pode ter.

a) requisitos de funcionamento e de desempenho,
Para um produto fica fácil. É o que se espera dele, quanto deve durar, o que deve resistir (Será a prova d’água? Irá suportar quedas? Vai funcionar a bateria ou não? Precisa suportar pressão?). São as características esperadas para o produto que será criado.

Para um serviço isso fica mais subjetivo, mas ainda assim dá para determinar seu funcionamento e desempenho. Um bufê por exemplo, que fornece seu trabalho para eventos, precisa saber quais os requisitos que terá que atender. Quantos garçons vão ser necessários? Quanto de bebida e quais? Que tipo de convidados estarão no evento? Esses são alguns exemplos de entradas que caberiam nessa alínea.

E quem fornece projetos (hidráulicos, elétricos, civis…)? Os requisitos de funcionamento e desempenho incluiriam número de pontos de tomadas, tipos, pontos de iluminação, onde precisaria de dimmers, essas coisas…

b) requisitos estatutários e regulamentares aplicáveis,
Esta alínea inclui normas aplicáveis que precisarão ser consideradas no projeto. Voltando ao exemplo do bufê, poderíamos considerar o traje dos funcionários, o menu… E se for preciso ter garçons que falem inglês para atender convidados internacionais? Esses não são requisitos legais, mas fazem partes de normas sociais que para um bufê funcionam como leis, não é mesmo?

c) onde aplicável, informações originadas de projetos anteriores semelhantes
Pode ser que algumas características do produto ou serviço já foram atendidas com sucesso em projetos anteriores, então por que não aproveitar? Na hora de atender essa alínea é que percebemos o quanto pode ser útil manter um histórico dos projetos já executados e validados! Num projeto de software, por exemplo, é comum se aproveitar bibliotecas de funções criadas para programas já existentes. Soluções consagradas em serviços anteriores poupam muito trabalho e oferecem um ganho de agilidade no novo projeto. Só devemos tomar cuidado, pois nem sempre o que foi válido em um caso será garantia de sucesso em outro. Avalie criteriosamente antes de decidir.

d) outros requisitos essenciais para projeto e desenvolvimento.
Aqui entram as particularidades de seu trabalho, área de atuação ou do projeto em questão. Não vou dar exemplos, pois essa parte você deve responder melhor que ninguém… Pense apenas que são as necessidades fundamentais do produto ou serviço e que não são comuns a outros casos.

As entradas devem ser analisadas criticamente quanto à suficiência. Requisitos devem ser completos, sem ambigüidades e não conflitantes entre si.
Ou seja, TODAS as entradas esperadas e imagináveis para seu projeto devem ser levadas em consideração! E todos os requisitos devem estar claramente definidos e devem também ter coerência. Mais uma vez o bufê vai servir de exemplo: Não adianta ter um requisito dizendo que os garçons deverão estar trajados a rigor e outro dizendo que deverão estar usando tênis branco!!! Entendeu?

Para terminar, volto a falar do registro de todas essas informações. Um formulário como o que sugeri pode servir mas não é a única maneira. Há casos em que estes registros podem ter outras formas, podem estar num banco de dados, em atas de reunião, em uma especificação técnica, em um memorial de cálculo… Tudo depende da natureza do seu trabalho! Outra coisa: nem todo projeto precisa atender todos esses requisitos! Se você sabe que não existem normas (requisitos regulamentares ou estatutários) para atender, não tema indicar um grande N/A (não aplicável) neste ponto!

Na parte 3 desse artigo falaremos sobre as saídas. Aguardem que publico em breve!

Não vai doer nadinha!...

Vamos dar uma olhada mais detalhada no requisito 7.3, já que é nele que se encontram as maiores dúvidas de interpretação dos leitores do blog. Já havia escrito outro artigo falando sobre ele, mas não tão aprofundado. O texto da norma estará transcrito aqui em vermelho, para facilitar o acompanhamento. Tentarei dar dicas que atendam projeto de produtos e de serviços.

Como será um texto longo, dividirei em partes. A primeira, que é esta, já poderá dar bastante esclarecimento sobre o que fazer para atender o 7.3:

7.3.1 Planejamento do projeto e desenvolvimento

A organização deve planejar e controlar o projeto e desenvolvimento de produto. Durante o planejamento do projeto e desenvolvimento a organização deve determinar:

a) os estágios do projeto e desenvolvimento,

b) a análise crítica, verificação e validação que sejam apropriadas para cada fase do projeto e desenvolvimento, e

c) as responsabilidades e a autoridade para projeto e desenvolvimento.

Sempre que vir a palavra produto neste requisito considere que ela equivale a serviço, se for o seu caso. As três alíneas acima não são tão complicadas quanto parecem. Um dos maiores erros ao interpretar o 7.3 é achar que cada item dele deve ser aplicado individualmente em todos os projetos, o que não é verdade. Partes dele se aplicam ao processo de gerenciamento dos projetos portanto, uma vez definidas, já estão atendidas a cada vez que se cria um novo projeto. Vamos olhar cada uma agora:

a) os estágios do projeto e desenvolvimento,
Estes estágios podem variar a cada projeto ou não, dependendo do tipo de projeto. As fases ou estágios podem ser, por exemplo:

Especificação: Requisitos iniciais que deverão ser atendidos pelo produto ou serviço. Faz parte das entradas de projeto e definem as necessidades existentes e que o produto ou serviço deverão atender.

Design e/ou Materiais: Onde definimos os materiais pretendidos ou recomendados para atender as especificações estabelecidas. Pode incluir a escolha de cores, texturas, tamanho, etc… Num projeto de construção civil por exemplo seria o memorial da obra.

Inspeção: Os pontos onde, durante o desenvolvimento do projeto ou do serviço, podem ser feitas inspeções para garantir que a execução está correndo conforme o projetado. São as análises críticas e verificações de que fala a alínea “b”. As análises críticas também ocorrem quando temos que mudar algo no projeto por algum motivo.

Esses são apenas alguns exemplos de estágios (ou fases) do desenvolvimento de um projeto. Cada área tem suas particularidades e, quando se fala em projeto e desenvolvimento do produto ou serviço, elas devem ser consideradas.

b) a análise crítica, verificação e validação que sejam apropriadas para cada fase do projeto e desenvolvimento,
Cada fase do projeto, da criação de um produto ou da execução de um serviço, podem precisar (ou não) de análise crítica e verificações. A análise crítica trata basicamente de constatarmos se estamos indo na direção correta e prevista. Pode ser feita por um determinado profissional que acompanha os trabalhos ou por um grupo, em reuniões. A melhor forma só pode ser determinada considerando-se a complexidade do projeto. Uma reforma pode ser acompanhada e analisada por um arquiteto. A construção de um foguete terá uma infinidade de profissionais envolvidos e tarefas sendo executadas simultaneamente… A análise crítica se baseia geralmente em informações e as verificações em acompanhamento local do trabalho.
A validação é outra coisa. Significa garantir que o resultado esperado foi alcançado ou superado. Pode ser feita no final do desenvolvimento ou pode ser necessária em determinados estágios. Quer um exemplo simples? Para pintar uma parede é necessário verificar se o acabamento de base está adequado. O pintor verifica se foi passado um selante, testa se ele está suficientemente seco, e só então começa a aplicar a tinta. Antes de dar outra demão de tinta, ele verifica novamente se a camada anterior está seca. Nesses momentos ele está fazendo uma verificação do projetado, e também uma validação da etapa anterior. Através de uma conversa entre ele e o arquiteto (uma análise crítica), podem decidir não aplicar mais demãos de tinta, ou o contrário. Essas decisões alteram de alguma forma o projetado.

c) as responsabilidades e a autoridade para projeto e desenvolvimento.
Cada fase pode ter um responsável pela execução, pela verificação, pela validação… É a mais simples das alíneas, pois basta definir desde o início do trabalho quem é responsável pelo quê, para cada fase. Já viram um desenho de peça? Num dos cantos tem sempre uma espécie de tabela onde constam o nome de quem desenhou, quem verificou e quem aprovou aquele desenho. É uma evidência de que as responsabilidades e a autoridade foram definidas.

A organização deve gerenciar as interfaces entre diferentes grupos envolvidos no projeto e desenvolvimento, para assegurar a comunicação eficaz e a designação clara de responsabilidades.
As saídas do planejamento devem ser atualizadas apropriadamente, na medida em que o projeto e o desenvolvimento progredirem.
Esta parte do 7.3.1 pode estar definida em um procedimento, no Manual da Qualidade, ou em alguns casos até mesmo no próprio projeto! O importante é que seja estabelecida uma forma clara de comunicação entre os membros de uma equipe e entre várias equipes que porventura estejam envolvidas num mesmo projeto. Pode ser definido por exemplo que todos os assuntos serão tratados por e-mail, ou que será feita uma reunião semanal e lavrada uma ata… Um pouco antes comentei que a construção de um foguete envolve muita gente. Já pensou se isso vira uma Torre de Babel? – O foguete não vai sair nunca e o que vai para o espaço é o projeto! Por isso a ISO volta a frisar que as responsabilidades devem estar claramente definidas desde o início do projeto. E afirma também que desde o início deve ter alguém responsável por manter atualizadas as saídas do projeto e desenvolvimento na medida em que aconteçam. Essas atualizações poderiam ser reportadas pelo líder de cada equipe e centralizadas no responsável maior pelo projeto, que acompanha os cronogramas e os atualizaria conforme o andamento dos trabalhos.

NOTA: Análise crítica de projeto e desenvolvimento, verificação e validação têm propósitos distintos. Estas atividades podem ser conduzidas e registradas separadamente ou em qualquer combinação, na forma adequada para o produto e a organização.
Esta nota serve apenas para alertar que a ordem das atividades não precisa obedecer necessariamente uma estrutura rígida. Quantas e quais análises críticas serão necessárias, quais verificações e validações deverão ser feitas e em quais momentos, tudo isso pode ser livremente definido pela organização e não pode ser questionado. Dependendo da complexidade do projeto, volto a dizer, essas atividades podem ser feitas simultaneamente, num mesmo momento.

Para facilitar o planejamento do projeto e desenvolvimento, desenvolvi em conjunto com um engenheiro de desenvolvimento um check-list que facilita bastante as definições iniciais e o acompanhamento de qualquer projeto. Para cada etapa, você tem total liberdade para expandi-la e detalhar, ou mesmo informar que ela não se aplica.

Jag har förstått att flera medieforskare har reagerat över att nyhetsrapporteringen romantiserade rånarna i den spektakulära kuppen i Västberga tidigare i höst. Att de nästan fick drag av mästertjuvarna i filmens värld. Åtminstone inledningsvis var det rånarna som var de skickliga, väldisciplinerade och välorganiserade medan poliserna fick rollen som handfallna, klumpiga och inkompetenta. Det är lätt att dras med i fascinationen över det perfekta brottet, men där ligger också faran eftersom det faktiskt handlar om grov kriminalitet.

Kombinationen av fascination och farlighet fanns också i det stora teaterprojektet 7:3 för tio år sen. Den gången var det konstnären Lars Norén som ville utforska fångarnas liv och nazistiska sympatier i sin fascination för underliggande, okända mörka stråk i människors liv. Det var på många sätt ett spännande konstprojekt även om det slutade med att skådespelande fångar på permission blev polismördare i Malexander.

Kulturjournalisten Elisabeth Åsbrinks läsvärda undersökning av teaterprojektet och morden handlar just om vådan av att romantisera brottslingar. Hon visar hur nästan alla inblandade valde att titta bort istället för att se riskerna med projektet. ”Det finns en smärtpunkt av ansvar som ingen kan komma undan”, skriver hon.

Vägg i vägg med livet på scenen pågick planeringen av en våldsam brottsturné genom landet. Det är ju bara möjligt om andra i ens omgivning väljer att titta bort, att inte se eller ta ansvar för det man uppfattar. Att till exempel inte ta reda på hur de generösa permissionerna sköttes. Eller att, som teaterfolket och filmmakarna, inte berätta att fångarna bröt mot reglerna och till och med mordhotade medskådespelare.

Men ansvaret stannar inte där. Jag tror som Elisabeth Åsbrink att frågan om ansvar måste sökas långt tillbaka i varje brottslings historia. Att ansvaret finns hos alla som har sett och hört och tänkt, men inte reagerat. Det gäller också medierna. För vilka blir vi och vad får vi för samhälle om vi också väljer att titta bort?

A week and a half ago, we had  an MJ and the Groaters reunion.

Who are MJ and the Groaters, you ask? Oh, just me, Paul, and Jon. A nice little name for our trio of musicianship.

This is where it all began…  The three of us rehearsing to play a Jars of Clay song at church, 2 1/2 years ago. Not actually our first performance, but the first documented evidence of our friendship and collaboration.

This is where it brought us…

And we celebrated our music together by having breakfast at my favorite restaurant and going for a drive. Thanks for being a part of my music for the last 3 years, you guys. I’m definitely going to miss you….

Yes, finally a release. I’ve been lazy to typeset. Anyways, this chapter is a Momo chapter! Kinda interesting, seems like a filler but then again.. Most of the recent chapters are kind of fillers. Anyways, yes… I do realized KS, scanlated 75. If you read on there MH page, Bob mentioned him doing random Onidere chapters every now and then. I thought it was fine, since I haven’t even touched the raws of chapter 75. There not planning to do Onidere, atleast I believe so… So there isn’t competing between chapter releases, but you should expect them to do a random Onidere chapter every now and then. Also, no sense in hating KS since they scanlated like most of the beginning chapters of our precious Onidere! However if it was another group, I probably would be kinda mad

Dance Miniature and Andrew McClelland’s Somewhat Accurate History of the Fall of the Roman Empire, Melbourne Fringe Festival 6/10/09

Two seperate shows from the fringe festival that I saw last night, being counted as one due to the fact that I didn’t have to pay to get into either of them. (mwahaha)

Dance Miniature I knew nothing about and just tagged along to see with some people who happened to be going. There were three seperate pieces; the first I found alienating and dull and a bit wanky, the second I would have enjoyed if I hadn’t been so tired, but the audience participation involved was irritating when all I wanted to do was sit down. However, I thought the third was brilliant, it involved an artist trying to capture the lines of a projected dancer on white cardboard boxes as someone else kept moving them into different configurations. I really loved the idea and what it managed to express.

rating: Meh (overall)

McClelland’s Roman history lesson was brilliant as always. It is a testament to how engaging he is that I managed to stay awake well after 10pm (these 5.30 starts are killing my social life) listening to what was essentially a history lecture. I wish I’d had a teacher like him when I was a kid, I would have done so much better and now be more smart and shit.

Another week has come and gone.  I’ve worked on a few more things on my list and thought about a few others.  At least having a list to be accountable for keeps my mind working on what to do next. 

I even told Rob about my “list” this weekend.  At first he looked at me like I was crazy, but by Sunday night he was thinking of a few things to put on his “list” (whether or not he actually writes an official one or not). 

I think if we really sit down and evaluate the things that we want to do in life, it will help shape our lives.  Even if we don’t get them all accomplished, just mapping them out can change us!

Here is what I’ve worked on:

#61- I found and downloaded a great program called MediaMonkey last week.  It is a program that lets you edit your music files on your harddrive and add the appropriate tags, album art, etc.  I worked on quite a few files and have many, many more to go to have a completely organized file.  It was fun to get started on them though!

#72- I watched my first movie last night.  Rob and I watched BASIC  (the TV edited version).  It is a movie from 2003 starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson.  It was a pretty good movie.  I loved the twist at the end.  I wasn’t expecting that!  I love movies that make you think you have it all figured out and then at the end you really don’t. 

#73- I finally got a hug from Rob!  I’m glad he is home from his business trip.  It’s kind of lonely around here without him!

…dead at 73.

Well, now that I have finished my List, I guess it is time to get started.  I haven’t actually completed any tasks yet, but I have started on a few. 

#44- Yesterday was payday and I put my first $50 in a special savings account.  Hopefully saving will become a habit for me!

#45- I bought a new binder for my recipe binder!  Yeah!

#73- I got my first 3 hugs from my beautiful kids, Katelyn, Lyndsi and Justin.  There’s nothing quite like the hug of a child.  They love unconditionally!  I wish my husband, Rob was on the list too but he’s out of town on a business trip until Thursday.

#78- I decided to start reading the scriptures starting with the Old Testament.  I started reading in Genesis and so far I’ve read about Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel and Noah and the Flood.  It’s good to be back reading the scriptures cover to cover.  I read bits and pieces of scripture but don’t usually take the time to go through it completely.

So that is where I’m at.  The Chinese philosopher, Lao-tzu said,

Everybody knew come friday night the place to go was
"the spot". It's where you went when mom and dad thought
you were somewhere else. There were no adults. They would
have flipped if they even knew it existed. It was a place
that only the kids seemed to know about. Your older brother
in the class of '69 hung out there in his time. Later you
knew that little sis (class of 76) went there a time or two. 

Maybe it's where you had that first beer, first kiss or
first smoke. More often than not though, nothing in
particular went on. Nothing except the magic of being
a teenager and hanging out with friends. 

Occasionally someone would do something worth talking about
come monday; like the time Mike Kowalski burned the rubber
off his dad's Impala. Or the time when whatshername had a
few too many beers and nobody could find her until her
friends realized she was asleep in the backseat. Whether it
was a field, seldom used dead-end or old industrial yard... 

It was... "the spot".

And "the spot" is one more reason why,
Being in the class of 70-something rocked!

Friday night, after the game...be there.

Back in high school, sleepovers were a regular occurrence with my group of friends.  We would usually have them at Lindsay’s house, sometimes at mine or Joan’s to mix things up, and occasionally at Tracy’s house. We would watch movies, eat snacks, and stay up really late (sometimes as late as 3 or 4  in the morning).  While we never drank or did drugs, we did occasionally get into a little trouble.  There are 4 instances  in particular that immediately come to mind:

1) We were spending the night at Lindsay’s house one Halloween and we decided to sneak out of the house and cut down a plastic penguin that hung from a tree, year round, at a house in the neighborhood. We waited until after her parents went to bed, we sneaked out of  the house, and made our way to the house where we successfully cut the penguin down (I still have a scar on my ankle from when I accidentally slipped down the wet hill). However, on our way back home, Lindsay’s dad, who had heard us leave and came looking for us in the car, intercepted us and sent us straight home.  He was pretty mad.

2) Once when we stayed at Tracy’s house, we decided to go TP someone’s house.  I don’t remember how we chose our victim.  As we were finishing our work, I stumbled upon some bags of warm, smelly grass clippings at the end of the driveway.  Jackpot.  After sprinkling them all over the driveway and sidewalks, I shoved a bunch in between the front door and the storm door.  I  finished the job by filling their mailbox, making sure to flip up their mailbox flag before we left.  You’ve got mail!

3) New Year’s 1999 we had a sleepover at my house. If you remember, that was when everyone was panicked over Y2K. Nobody knew what was going to happen, so when the clock struck 12 and the power went out at my house, we all screamed. Turns out it was just my dad playing a joke on us and all was well in the world.  We were feeling antsy after that, so my dad agreed we could all go out and TP the house of my neighbor (and friend of the family) Randy, who lived at the other end of the block.  We set out and, of course, we were giggly.  My dad, who came with us, told us we needed to be quiet or we’d turn around and go home.  We all quieted down, and began our work. What we didn’t know, and soon found out, was that my dad brought a bunch of M80’s (large firecrackers) along.  So, while we were instructed not to make a peep, he started setting them off outside Randy’s house.  The neighbor next door burst out of his house, mistaking the blasts for gunshots.

4) After our last day of Junior year, our catch phrase became “We’re seniors…holy shit!”  We, of course, celebrated with a sleepover (at Joan’s, I think).  At one point in the evening, we decided it would be fun to drive my car on senior circle, a small circular patch of grass in the parking lot that the seniors parked around. (Oddly enough, the school got rid of it during some major renovations to the school and we never got to park around it).  Our new favorite inside joke became “Look, we’re on senior circle!”  Afterward, since that wasn’t enough fun, I drove my car around on the precious Guido Kauls Soccer Field. The event became known as “dandelions” because, when I got home the next morning, I noticed I had grass and dandelions stuck in my front license plate.

Since Andrew was up North hunting this weekend, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to have the girls over to relive one of our favorite activities in high school.  Unfortunately, due to two girls living out of the country and conflicting work schedules, only 3 girls were able to make it last night – Liz, Lindsay, and Natalie.  It was a pretty laid back evening: we ate some snacks, watched YouTube videos, got visited by my dad (in the words of Lindsay, “It wouldn’t be a sleepover without the parents checking in on us”), watched movies (Wallace & Gromit:  A Close Shave and Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone), caught up on each others’ lives, and then went to bed relatively early (around 1:30am).

While it wasn’t a typical sleepover in the sense that everyone slept crammed on the floor in one room (hey, we’re getting old and prefer to sleep on comfy surfaces!), it was still a lot of fun.  It brought back a lot of great memories from high school with a group of wonderful girls who played an influential role in the person I am today.
