I’m not just saying this because my friend works here, this place is great, a well conceived cafe and roastery in a prime position to sell it’s wares. It’s only been open for a couple of weeks but I expect great things.

Jason roasts all the coffee on site (if you’re lucky, he’ll make it for you too) and though I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject, in my humble opinion it’s excellent. Maybe it has something to do with the way he hugs his roaster when he leaves, I don’t know. My only complaint is that the cafe’s location (Prahran market) makes it impossible for me to nip over for a lunch time or breakfast cup and never mind trying to convince my ‘north of the river’ friends to trek over to the ‘wrong side’ for a weekend brunch. One small consolation is that my mother works nearby so I am able to send her over regularly to replenish my supply of beans.

Try the macaroons. They’re magical.

Rating: OMFG, get over there right now and do yourself a favour.

On Cup Day I met S and E here to watch the race. We got a table with a good view and ordered a couple of pizzas and some haloumi to go with our champers. E was the only one of us who won anything, and I think she only got a few dollars back but we had a nice time chatting and chewing.

The pizza was OK, not quite the standard I have become used to, but satisfyingly cheesy none the less. The pub itself had quite a nice atmosphere, though the toilets need renovating.

Rating: OK.

———————x——————-
63 (Cargas por Naturaleza) – Gasto 1
94 (Centro de Costo) – Gasto 2
A 42 Proveedores

———————x——————-
63 (Cargas por Naturaleza) – Gasto
48 Provisiones Diversas
A 42 Proveedores

Ajuns in capatul strazii, vad autobuzul 102, supranumit, pe merit, masina timpului. Din fericire, usa s-a deschis si am reusit sa patrund in intregime, in misticul mijloc de transport.

The Board of V8 Supercars Australia is set to decide whether drivers should remain in their respecti

The Board of V8 Supercars Australia is set to decide whether drivers should remain in their respective cars for the 2010 enduros.

It will Even up the playing field for teams without two gun drivers and also raise the stakes of accomplished V8 Supercar steerers lacking a full-time gig.

Such a move would be detrimental to teams like of the Toll Holden Racing Team, which won last weekend’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 with their stars Garth Tander and Will Davison paired together.

Those in favour of the concept also believe that it would give more cars the opportunity of winning Bathurst.

Tony Cochrane, V8SA Executive Chairman, confirmed the Board would discuss the item at a meeting, which is scheduled over two days next week.

“Personally I favour it but I don’t know what the Board’s feeling is yet,” he said.

“(And) I truly have not seen the feedback yet from the teams.

“That is on the agenda for the October 21st board meeting.

“It’s a two-day board meeting because it’s also our budget board meeting on the Wednesday/Thursday before the Gold Coast event.”

Warren Luff and Jonathon Webb drove for Jim Beam Racing in the enduros, experiencing a disappointing Bathurst, but they surprised many with a top six finish at the L&H 500 at Phillip Island.

Luff said he would rather an endurance drive with a strong team than a full-time drive with a weaker one, which is sure to be music to the ears of the leading teams if the proposed rule change goes ahead.

“I’ve found a really good home here; even though it’s only an enduro drive I’m sure there’s plenty of other guys that would love to have this drive,” he said.

“Who knows what the future holds, but it’s good to have a competitive car and be with a competitive team.

“There’s definitely a core group of us that are probably the better of the enduro drivers and given the right opportunity I’m sure we could all hold our heads high if given a full-time drive again.

“But it’s getting a drive, and getting a drive with a good team, that enables you to show what you can really do and that’s probably been the big thing for me this year with these guys and their new cars and stuff; I’ve been able to show that I’ve got some good speed.”

David Besnard and Greg Ritter proved their mettle at Bathurst paired in the second Garry Rogers Motorsport Commodore.

On a similar strategy to Sprint Gas Racing’s Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife, the part-timers would have been in contention for a podium – if not the win – but an ill-timed safety car stopped them in their tracks and they had to settle for a top 10 finish.

Besnard was far from surprised that he and Ritter did well at both of this year’s enduros.

“It’s definitely harder when you’re not in it all the time but I think if you ask any decent race car driver they’ll be confident in their ability and that’s why we do it.

“I get asked the same question every year especially at Bathurst. I’ve been on the podium twice and each time people say ‘oh are you amazed to have the pace to be on the podium?’ and you’re like ‘no, I’m not’,” he laughed.

“I’ve had good cars the last couple of years and I have been able to show what I can do.”

This comes from one of my periods of idleness, commuting to work on the 63rd street bus. It is strange how when you fill your head with things, little pieces of media, they have a way of coming out again, sometimes months or years later, transformed. I do not know what it is that happens in the space between my ears that tears wholes to pieces, rearranging them according to the way I see the world, but I enjoy watching the process happen. It entertains me, and I hope it entertains other people too.

I know I am a couple years behind on Mad Men, but I will be polite about this anyway. Consider this your spoiler alert.

scene

Francine was opening up to her friend Betty about the devastating realization of her husband’s infidelity, revealing her private disaster in pieces, just as it had been revealed to her, until truth dawned, shattering her darkness, plunging her into a state of helpless despair. But Betty didn’t understand. Asked a rhetorical question about why a married man would make regular calls to a woman in Manhattan who answers her own phone, Betty misses the point, making a tepid gesture of reassurance:

“Maybe he’s throwing you a surprise party.”

Betty had been criticized earlier in the season both by her analyst and her husband for having a childlike disposition, and even if the viewer was meant to understand the thought as insensitive and insulting, here they see it expressed as truth, along with its implications. Betty is optimistic about the world, even as she sees its startling cruelty in the lives of her friends and acquaintances. Faced with these facts, however, she does not react with sympathy, but adopts a patronizing air that exposes her naivety and distances her from people who had respected her. She can be a little stuck up, sometimes.

In relationships, every opportunity for trust is an opportunity for evil to enter and poison everything. Betty had trusted her husband, and had thought of their marriage as something she could rely on. But Francine shatters her Eden, awakening her to the unpleasant knowledge of good and evil. Given the emotional volatility of her character, it seems equally likely that the news would embolden her as it does that it would crush her, but we do not watch her react to betrayal with a tearful breakdown. It is a genuine triumph to see, as the episode unfolds, that she awakens unto strength and not unto weakness. She might feel weak and lonely, but she doesn’t show it.

Even in her strength, she could have committed strategic suicide by surrendering to waves of passionate anger and lashing out at Don. Instead, she keeps her cool, and gives him the space to justify himself. She does that sneaky passive-aggressive thing women do, where they frame an accusation as a story and draw conclusions about inner character based on the response. In this case, Betty merely rehashes the story Francine told her, pointedly inviting Don’s opinion of the situation. It is interrogation disguised as honesty.

“How could someone do that to the person that they love?…Doesn’t this all mean anything?”

“No one knows why people do what they do.”

“How could someone do that to the person that they love?” she demands of him, smoking a cigarette and coldly staring him in the eye. “Doesn’t this all mean anything?” He does not satisfy her with an honest response; the whole train of thought annoys him. “No one knows why people do what they do,” he says, letting the ensuing silence say everything he wouldn’t, before excusing himself from the conversation.

Don is supposed to fill the archetype of the deep, dark, inscrutable male, but this moment does not protect him by reinforcing his absolute ownership of his own motives. Instead, it exposes him, in his desolation and faithlessness. His wife reveals later not that she is furious, but that she feels sorry for him, because he does not understand what family is. This does not erase her pain or the damage he has done, but in spite of his distance from her, a distance that he has actively maintained throughout his career of blatant infidelity, her willingness to love has made her, through intentional weakness, stronger than him.

“Distance has no way of making love understandable.”

-Wilco

Don Draper proves the truth of this line in his manifold spiritual dissipation. In his case, “distance” is his withdrawal from the influence and sight of others, and “love” is the human connection that sustains people in their understanding of the things that surround them. Loneliness can only give birth to understanding as a midwife, through a surrender to the Unknown, a surrender through which the soul prepares itself to accept in essence the very things it once felt moved to renounce. Distance, pursued as an end, is dangerous to the soul; it is its doom.

Love, on the other hand, by that faith which reaches through the absurd, has its own way of making distance understandable. When events separate people from each other, either through an actual geographical separation or spiritually, through trauma, humans console each other by promising to say a prayer, by claiming to know what the other person is going through, or just “my thoughts are with you.” Or, in Ezra Pound’s 79th Canto, regarding the intersection of romantic longing and distance: “How is it far if you think of it?” It is as if there are people who actually believe that love can transcend distance, that thought can overcome and nullify evils that should not exist, that should not have ever existed in the first place.

I’ve been here before, but not since its recent renovations. I was amazed when we walked in that it was the same place, the bar and entrance had been moved, the entire dining area was unrecognisable and the atmosphere had changed completely. As had the menu.
As this was another dinner with Jason, of course it was all about pizza. I have been to so many pizza places in Melbourne in the last couple of months I think I need a break. Nevertheless, it was delicious, especially the intense Formaggio pizza, which wasn’t afraid to feature a robustly stinky cheese and almost made me hallucinate. In a good way.
I also enjoyed the décor, especially the full wall frieze of a ballroom scene that tricked my eyes into thinking it was an abstract painted grey wall for half the evening.

It’s probably the second best pizza I’ve ever had, and the best I’ve had in Melbourne. Even the crust was delicious.
It was packed the entire time but wasn’t too loud or cramped. I would have liked to sit outside as it was a balmy evening, but even so it was a lovely meal.
