Here is a very old commercial (from the 80s!) for 7-Up, featuring both a Pacman arcade game and Kim Carnes’ hit “Bette Davis Eyes.”

My days in Iraq are somewhat unpredictable.  In fact, I think it’s a good day if there are new surprises and challenges.  I am fortunate to work in a command climate that embraces media and values the role of reporters in telling the story of the American Soldier.

Recently, we embedded a reporter from McClatchy News for about a week.  Like all embeds–particularly the ones who spend all their time in Baghdad or the U.S.–my goal is to get them a good dose of what Soldiers experience day-to-day.  This runs the gamut from garrison to tactical operations.

So I arranged to take the McClatchy reporter on a patrol with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment “Steel Tigers” (I like their nickname).  This patrol, like all the patrols we have through Iraqi cities, was conducted with the Iraqi Security Forces.  In this instance, it was a battalion operating under the 40th Iraqi Army Brigade.

It was night…patrol brief was conducted…strapped into 5-point harness in the back of MRAPs..ride out…strain to look out blast proof glass, wishing we could stop in town at a corner were a group of military aged males has assembled for socialization…not to arrest anybody, it’s 2009 not 2003…I wish we could stop and say “Shaaquu Maakauu?”…no stopping though.  Not allowed.  Might not be safe.  Heck, stopping is a silly idea.  I wouldn’t randomly crash a block party in the states.  Dropping in on a gathering in Iraq with a 10′ tall, 60,000 lbs. armored truck, and full-kit probably wouldn’t ingratiate me with the locals.  Silly me.

Fast forward…

…so we end up at an Iraqi Army checkpoint southeast of Nasiriyah.  Walk inside and are met by a proud Iraqi captain.  Iraqis tend to be quite hospitable, regardless of their lot in life.  So he offers us little 500 ML cans of 7UP.

The captain work and sleeps in this trailer most of the time.  Though, like most Iraq Army soldiers he goes on “janzaa” (leave) every few weeks to visit his family.

Sometimes you see the oddest bits of Western culture in Iraq.  The sleeping side of the trailer was dominated by a poster of the   “ideal” suburban home.  I really wanted to say, “Dude, what’s up with the poster?”  But, I couldn’t manage to find the right way to ask, so I passed.  The American dream lives on.

After establishing my legitimacy to bring media–many military people are wary of media–to his checkpoint we had a few minutes of social talk.  Connecting culturally is important when dealing with Iraqi counterparts.  The captain led off the discussion with movies and politics.  He equates the recent uptick in movies with predominately black casts to the Obama presidency.  He likes black movies.  He likes Obama.  Not sure what to make of my phenotype, he asked if I was “Basrawi.”  This has happened to me before.  The majority of the world are people of color, and in Iraq there’s a certain kinship I’ve been met with by many swarthy southern Iraqis.

This captain had served in the Army under Saddam’s regime.  He was based in Amarah in 2003 and decided to bug out after 15 consecutive days of bombing.  According to him, the outcome of OIF would have been different if the Coalition didn’t use so many planes.  I disagree.  Our tanks and artillery would have blasted away the rag-tag Iraqi Army.  At anyrate, this was just simple banter from former enemies who are now allies.  The Iraqi Army will do well to promote this captain.  We went to check out his troops.  They were disciplined, motivated, and vigilant.  A safe ride home and it was mission complete.

I hope to visit this captain again, sometime.  He is a brother-in-arms.

Although you may think that bottled water is a safer option than tap, two new reports show that the store-bought stuff is actually less regulated than the water you get out of your faucet for free. What’s in your water? You may be hard pressed to find out, reports the Environmental Working Group.

The Food and Drug Administration has little authority to regulate bottled brands, according to a U.S. Congressional report released recently. While municipal water utilities are required to provide public reports of test results, bottled-water makers are not. (On the other hand, well water, which is found in many rural areas, isn’t regulated as water provided by towns and cities is.) So although you may fork over a pretty penny for bottled water, that doesn’t mean it’s any better than what’s coming out of your faucet. In fact, it could be worse and you’d never know it. The new research is backed by a second report from the Environmental Working Group.

The nonprofit advocacy organization surveyed the labels and web sites of nearly 200 popular bottled-water brands and found that less than 2 percent disclosed three important facts that can affect safety: the water’s source, purification methods, and chemical pollutants in each bottle.

Beyond H2O is different and is delivering water the way it should be – pure and refreshing – while disclosing its source, purification process, and the pollutants it DOES NOT have in it.

Hace algunos meses fui al Unicentro El Marqués a ver una película en función de medianoche en las salas de Cines Unidos. Cuando me dan mis cotufas y las empiezo a comer (ya instalada dentro de la sala), me doy cuenta que están correosas, terriblemente malas. Pensé –bueno, debe ser la hora, no debería quejarme.

Volví a ir al mismo sitio por la comodidad que representa para mí el traslado hasta allá y ésta vez no tenían Pepsi ni otro refresco, sino 7Up. No tenían ni té frío. En fin, me incomodó un poco la situación, porque las entradas de Cines Unidos no son regaladas por cierto, pero está bien. No dije nada.

Ya la última vez fue el colmo y le dije a J. –Oye, mejor vamos a Cinex porque ya Cines Unidos la verdad es que no me agrada. No sé si es que no les importa en absoluto que la clientela se les cambie a la competencia, pero lamentablemente el servicio ya es patético.

Esta vez, fui un jueves (por lo general ni se me ocurre). En esa sede de Cines Unidos hay dos puntos de venta para cotufas. En el primer piso hay uno, donde hay hasta 4 taquillas aproximadamente y en el último piso hay otro, donde también hay unas 4 taquillas. Eran las 7pm y nos correspondía una sala en el último piso. Nuestra sorpresa es que cuando vamos a comprar cotufas nos dicen –“No, tienes que comprar abajo porque aquí estamos limpiando”. ¿Limpiando? ¡Limpiando! ¿Cómo limpiando a las 7 de la noche un jueves? Al llegar abajo, J. me llama desesperado porque la cola era muy larga ya que sólo funcionaba esa venta de cotufas, -todo un caos-. Afortunadamente llegó a tiempo para la película.
Cuando entramos a la sala, un escalón roto, los asientos con cotufas y un pegoste de mayonesa y mostaza en las escaleras. Y por supuesto, luego no podían faltar los imbéciles que no saben ver una película y hablan todo el tiempo, y no, no tenían 15 años. De hecho uno de ellos era un famosito de la televisión. En fin, una vergüenza y nadie en Cines Unidos hacía nada.

Antes, yo recuerdo que llegaba un chico y sacaba de la sala a la gente que molestaba, pero ya ni eso.  ¿Coño será que en Venezuela tenemos que rogar porque algo funcione correctamente?

¿Volver a Cines Unidos en el Unicentro? ¡Ni de vaina!

HAHAHA, please.. go to http://www.7up.com and have a good laugh with me.  They say “7 up, now 100% natural flavors”.  Blatant LIE.  Reading the ingredients on the 7 up can, I see my favorite enemy.  High fructose corn syrup.  Last I checked, the FDA stated that HFCS is NOT considered natural and should NOT be labeled as such.

So why is 7 up lying?  Or are they trying to pull the wool over the eyes of poor souls who see the words “natural” and “antioxidants” and think.. boy that must be healthy.  Maybe 7 up doesn’t consider HFCS a “flavor”.  Needless to say, it’s in there, it’s not natural, and this is false advertising.  

Okay, I have one more bone to pick with them.  Their 7up antioxidant.  It’s the same shitty ingredients as the regular 7up with vitamin E added, so they can say there are antioxidants in the drink.  Check the nutrition facts.. 10% vitamin E.  Give me a break.  

I’m really sick of false advertising of “healthy” products.  The American people are so confused as it is.  Low fat, low calorie, low carb, no sugar, no trans fat…. All of these words are the best marketing schemes I have ever seen in my life.

Oczywiście że chcemy. Dość zacinania się monet w standardowych szafach, kopania w nie gdy je “zjada”, irytacji gdy nie otrzymujemy tego co byśmy sobie życzyli. Płatność walutą wirtualną zdobywa kolejny obszar naszego życia. Czekamy z niecierpliwością. Mi się podoba bardzo, bo mam już dość nudnych gapiących się na mnie napojów, batonów i innego asortymentu umieszczonego w szafach. Chce powiewu świeżości, chociaż odrobiny designu w tym nudnym jak ….. mieście (to oczywiscie cytat z filmu).

Back in June I prepared some salted lemons in order to recreate my favourite Hong Kong drink from the restaurant Cha Cha Moon, salted lemon Sprite.  The chopped lemons have been stewing in their jar for well over the minimum one-month period required to preserve them and it’s high time to show everyone the results.

Pour some proper sweet fizzy lemonade, like Sprite or 7-Up, over a few chunks of salted lemon, add ice and it’s all ready to drink up.

The lemon (now all gooey and a sort of brown colour) slowly disintegrates in the glass, releasing blasts of astringent saltiness as it breaks up.  Poke it with a spoon!

What lies beneath?

Note: the Boylan Bottle Co. lemon seltzer shown in the first photo, while having a very pretty bottle, is entirely unsuitable for creating this drink with.  Trust me.

Let me start by saying I feel like a proud little artist!  I love this piece so much.  It will hang in our kitchen and make me happy every day. 

My apologies for the weird light in some of these photos.  

The tacky adhesive spray didn’t ruin it, thank goodness!  It does have a funny grainy film but thats ok.  It adds character and we like character.

Would you like a flower?  Why yes, I’d love one!  My favorite is the one smack in the middle, with the Vanilla Coke. 

I don’t like the soda, but I loved the cream and black colors. 

I added some leaves to the stems, keeping the Mountain Dew theme going.  Laura guessed right on the stems from the Sneak Peek!

Black grommet scrap thingys for the centers.  I wanted to poke it all the way through so you could see a little hole but the canvas was not having it and I risked screwing up my flowers and the canvas.

I ended up hot gluing the backs and pressing it down on top instead. 

Please recycle.  Or cash in your cans for some much needed gas money!  Or ice cream…whatever you “need”.  hee hee. 

Stamped on a fun phrase inspired by pulling out Magnetic Poetry words. 

I have a whole sandwich bag of the magnets and I considered gluing them right on but then decided I didn’t like it. 

I think I will chose letters that are a bit larger next time.  I really like the chipboard from THIS POST Laura did.  I need to get me some of those!

I sprinkled on some black glitter too.  Just to make the words stand out a bit more because they are so small.

Don’t you just love a dragonfly?  I do.  They are usually the coolest colors, they don’t look scary and best of all they don’t try to eat you! 

Here we have a 7Up version.

I like how it looks like it will take flight at any moment.  The shots are ridiculously blurry but you get the idea.  I cut this out from a chipboard dragonfly. 

Turns out you can cut the dang cans with kitchen sissors!  I had been using tin snips for the flowers. 

My flowers would have come out much cleaner if I’d dicovered this sooner.

Now the stars I have to give credit where credit is due.  This was Jason’s idea. 

When I had finished the flowers and words it looked naked on the top half. 

Jason mentioned how cool it would look with some tin stars and then we both said, “Hey!  There isn’t any Squirt on here!  Yellow Squirt stars!”

And poof my husband became a part of the creation.

I’ll be honest.  I can’t stand when he has an opinion about what I create.  I don’t tell him how to write a freakin’ song! 

The thing is, he would love it if I did.  And when he does have an idea for my stuff, its usually a great one.

(And I have helped write some songs. )

See how they shimmer when I take a terrible photo? lol  I actually thought the reflection was appropraite for the stars.

I wish I was the sort who took pictures of the whole process but if I took the time to do that, I wouldn’t have time for the creating. 

I’m on a tight creative frame with four babies and a full time job.

Maybe I’ll get to that point in the future.  Right now I’m just super happy to be doing something for me. 

I’m very proud of the fact that I finished it and on time!

Why was it banned? She’s just having some Sprite. People need to loosen up. I didn’t think Germany would ban this, have the tides changed there?

Il m’arrive souvent, que ce soit en ingurgitant quelques céréales, en me délectant d’une boisson gazeuse ou en gambadant joyeusement dans les allées beiges d’une épicerie, de me remémorer l’histoire de ces produits. Je ne fais pas référence à l’émission « Comment c’est fait » si brillamment animée par Jean-Luc Brassard mais plutôt à l’évolution esthétique de ces produits (favorisant le contenant au contenu) depuis qu’il m’a été donné de les découvrir. Évidemment, à l’instar d’une hippie réformée, le « look » change considérablement avec les années au gré de la mode et des tendances, mais il est un phénomène particulier qui s’éteint graduellement et qui m’attriste grandement : la disparition des mascottes.

Tandis que les produits de jadis étaient présentés par des personnages charismatiques tels que Fido Dido, Cool Spot, Kool-Aid Man , Tony le Tigre (qui éclipse complètement le tigre Esso dont on se fou éperduement), l’ours des céréales Sugar Crisp, l’ours A&W (l’ursidé étant indémodable), le lutin Lucky Charms, le clown (et sa horde de marginaux toxicomanes) McDonald’s, le magicien Alpha-Bits et le cowboy Honey-comb (et Mr. Net à la limite… j’en oublie probablement et j’en suis désolé, j’accueillerai leur critique s’ils se manifestent). Contrairement aux divers artistes qui endossent régulièrement des produits de consommation populaires, ces images n’ont pour raison d’être que la seule promotion d’un bien ou d’un service (Monsieur Muffler), leur destin est de promouvoir une marque et d’être les fières représentantes, le fer de lance de la commercialisation sympathique de divers biens. C’est une mission périlleuse et d’une haute et importance et, tristement, toutes ces mascottes n’y survivent pas…

Feu magicien Alpha-Bits

Je me souviens encore de cet après-midi fatidique où, inconscient du malheur qui me guettait, j’arpentais les allées du supermarché en compagnie de mon géniteur. Tel Little Mac essuyant un direct au menton de la part de Piston Honda, je fus ébranlé par la vision cauchemardesque qui s’offrit à moi : le très mauve et étoilé prestidigitateur gnome volant ornant habituellement cette boîte d’instructives céréales s’était vu dépouillé de son prestigieux statut par un vulgaire ordinateur au visage souriant. Trahi, je restai sans voix. Qu’était-il donc advenu du coquin magicien? Peut-être avait-il été victime de racisme, de décisions administratives relevant très clairement de la mutinerie, ou même pire : la mort. Aujourd’hui encore, je vis dans l’ignorance mais son doux souvenir ravive en moi le goût de ces céréales qui, autrefois délicieuses, semblaient désormais bien fades. Je venais de prendre définitivement conscience que la technologie allait irrémédiablement et inlassablement tuer la magie.

Bien que le triste sort du Alain Choquette de l’alimentation céréalière (inspiration momentanée : le Géant Vert) perturba ma croissance, sa fin tragique ne fut pas partagée pas tous ceux de son acabit. Certes, on perdit de vue le cowboy Honey-comb, mais je le soupçonne d’avoir réorienté sa carrière vers la figuration dans les films western, en profitant pour faire la doublure de Harrison Ford dans la plus récente épopée de la série Indiana Jones. Bien qu’il entretienne un profile bas, la chute de popularité de Fido Dido semble l’avoir incité à quelques actes désespérés tels que la diffusion d’un vidéo compromettant où il s’accouple avec Miss Piggy, l’enregistrement d’un simple avec Jordy et on l’a aussi arrêté pour conduite avec facultés affaiblies, ayant consommé 51 « gin/7up » au cours d’une petite soirée organisée par Macaulay Culkin. On le soupçonne aussi du meurtre avec préméditation de Cool Spot mais les preuves, jusqu’à ce jour, se sont montrées insuffisantes.

Cocufieur vétéran

La plupart des autres idoles de cette génération se sont éteintes paisiblement ou existent encore aujourd’hui, anodines, presque invisibles. Les seuls qui semblent maintenir le rythme sont sans aucun doute Mr Net et Tony le Tigre. Celui que l’on associe instinctivement à la propreté aurait, semble-t-il, accumulé les altercations au fil des ans à cause d’accusations répétées de maris frustrés qui affirment avoir trouvé les effets personnels de Mr près du lit conjugal. Mettant à profit son imposante musculature, Véritablement, de son prénom, aurait à plusieurs reprises redirigé vers l’hôpital le plus près les hommes mécontents. Plaidant la légitime défense, il insultait quand même allègrement ses assaillants, affirmant que « Ta mère était meilleure encore! » Tony, de son côté, a un passé beaucoup plus reluisant. Encourageant les jeunes athlètes, il fait aussi partie d’une étude qui permettra peut-être de percer les mystères de son métabolisme hors du commun, son régime étant essentiellement constitué de céréales sucrées. Les accusations pesant contre lui suite à la présumée ingestion de jeunes hockeyeurs du Delaware ont été démenties, les enfants en question ayant été retrouvés morts et entiers dans le Westfalia de leur entraîneur.

Bien que les temps changent, que des flammes naissent tandis que d’autres s’éteignent, je ne peux m’empêcher de penser à ce que serait le monde sans ces illustres personnages fictifs et sans histoire qui se sont battu vaillamment et avec acharnement pour défendre une juste cause. Je ne saurais dire si un jour viendra où ces pionniers du marketing seront reconnus à leur juste valeur et que des cendres de leurs idéaux naîtront de nouvelles figures emblématiques, gages de confiance et de qualité, marquant le début d’une ère de consommation saine, mais je me permet de lever les yeux vers le ciel et d’y rêver. Merci DuroMax.

Mention spécial au chevalier O’Keefe qui, depuis des temps immémoriaux, défend à la pointe de sa lame le droit de consommer abusivement une bière de qualité.

Another standby that tastes a little different in Canada. It has more of the lemon lime kick that you expect from 7 up. Also, very crisp probably because of real sugar.

An unique way to popularise your product, especially this summer extending beyond May & the Agni Natchathiram’s. 7Up’s come out with this Unique vehicle called Lemon Brigade in lines of a Fire Brigade Van, just that here one quenches the inner fire called thirst.

On May 18 Dr. Pepper Snapple Group’s 7UP launched Sevenísima, a summer-long contest offering participants the chance to win several prizes, including a family vacation for four and house-cleaning services.

The following is one of the branded spots, created and conceived by 7UP’s Hispanic agency, López Negrete Communications.
