La canción pertenece a Otis Redding – Try A Little Tenderness y esta en el film del genial  John Hughes, Pretty in Pink.
Hughes desapareció recientemente a los 59 años de un paro cardíaco.

Duckie (Jon Cryer) es el joven amigo que cela y pierde la cabeza por Andie Walsh, la hermosisima peliroja Molly Ringwald.
El video es una escena en que Duckie entra a la ¨disqueria¨ y canta la cancion Try A Little Tenderness, un momento hermoso y muy romantico… aunque no demasiado para Andie.

Este domingo se cumple el 25 aniversario del single navideño más vendido de la historia. Me refiero a la archiconocida “Do They Know It’s Christmas” de Band Aid.

La idea original fue de Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) quien, al parecer, viendo una noticia de la BBC sobre la hambruna en Etiopia, se quedó tan conmovido que llamó a Midge Ure de Ultravox para que le ayudara a involucrar a todas las estrellas más rutilantes del pop de los 80.

El single se convirtió en el de venta más rápida de Gran Bretaña, despachando 1 millón de copias la primera semana. También obtuvo el record de mantenerse cinco semanas en el primer puesto de las listas, puesto sólo superado en 1987 por la canción tributo a Diana de Gales “Candle In The Wind” de Elton John.

Pero Band Aid tuvo más secuelas; en 1989 y 2004. Y, aunque el organizador de esta última fuera otra vez Midge Ure, en realidad la estrella del vídeo fue Bono de U2. El single volvió a salir a la venta un 29 de noviembre, pero esta vez el dinero recaudado se destinó la región sudanesa de Darfur.

La edición de Band Aid 20 vendió 72.00 copias el día de su lanzamiento y 250.000 copias expedidas cada semana durante las 4 que se mantuvo encabezando las listas.

Para muchos, esta canción es sinónimo de caspa, pero no se le puede negar que ha demostrado ser una fórmula infalible en Navidad.

Hace muy poco les dije que recorreríamos el original sonido de los 80s, lo que no les dije es por donde andaríamos.
En esta ocasión le presentare un grupo de los que talvez en Europa sea conocido, pero en América y sobre todo en mi Sudamerica, no.
Frank Chickens fue una banda formada por David Toop y Kamura en la primer etapa. Kazuko Hohki, Kazumi Taguchi, Steve Beresford se sumaron mas tarde. Mayormente formada por mujeres, este grupo anglo-japones se baso en la movida inglesa de los 80s aportando su musica entre los años 1982 y 2001.

Kazuko Hohki y Kazumi Taguchi fueron fundadoras del grupo. Taguchi fue la primera en dejar el grupo, y fue sustituida por Atsuko Kamura.
También paso Chika Nakagawa y otras mas durante los años 90. Más adelante les cuento sobre Kazuko.
Las canciones eran sobre condiciones sociales japonesas, dirigidas especialmente a un publico femenino.
Sus actuaciones fueron igual que la mayoria en esa epoca, 100% playback.
Entre los invitados que trabajaron con ellas se encuentra el Maestro en Instrumentos de viento tradicionales asiáticos, Clive Bell.
Su hit que mas se escucho, no por estos lugares, fue We Are Ninja (Not Geisha). Versiones mas recientes del tema fueron remixadas y producidas por Fink, Yasuharu Konishi y Neotropic en el año 2000.

Otro de sus singles, Blue Canary fue numero 42 en el BBC DJ John Peel’s 1984 Festive Fifty. Luego de esto grabaron varias canciones para The Peel’s show en la Radio 1 de la BBC.
Estubieron de gira por el Reino Unido en varias oportunidades, y fueron banda soporte de The Smiths y otras bandas importantes en varias ocasiones.
Fueron nominados para el premio Perrier Award.

La banda que comenzó como dúo llego a tener ocho integrantes para fines de los 90s. Entre sus integrantes masculinos pasaron los japoneses Yumi Hara, Tomoko Minamazaki y Akiko Sato. El guitarrista Ray Hogan fue el único integrante no-japones que paso por el grupo.

Editan su primer álbum We Are Frank Chickens (1984), luego llegaria Get Chickenized (1987), el primer compilado de exitos The Best of Frank Chickens (1987), Club Monkey (1988), Pretty Frank Chickens (199?)(editado solamente en Japón), y Yukasita-Underfloor World (1997)

Aparecieron recientemente para una interpretación muy corta en el Japan Matsuri Festival en el Old Spitalfields Market, en septiembre del 2009.

Kazuko Hohki tambien es directora y escritora. Actualmente realiza espectáculos multimedia unipersonales en la ciudad que tanto le abrió sus puertas, Gran Bretaña.

Talvez le paresca bizarro, talvez una tomada de pelo, pero cuando hay de por medio influencias culturales diferentes todo es asombro.
Una banda que nos llega desde muy lejos con imagenes y sonidos clásicos de la época, la época de La Música de los 80s y 90s.

So its been a little while since I’ve posted and theres a few things that have caught my eye that I NEED to share with you all (7 people who read this blog haha).

80s sunnies – as you may have noticed theres been a massive surge in 80s inspired fashion and it’s no less apparent in the sunnies department. Several years ago it was aviators that were the thing and now you’ve probably noticed Ray Bans are THE hot ticket look at the moment but that is set to change (although there’ll always be some losers who cling to them). No, no longer will raybans (which i noticed peaked in popularity when the “actors” in Twilight sported them) be the dominant sunglasses look, instead watch out for a style more like this:

The style of frame is called Oliver People’s, and they will become quite big this summer, so watch out for them. If you like to stay ahead of trends I’d suggest picking up a pair, one place to go would be Incu men’s on Flinder’s Lane in the city.

So I work at G Star and the new drop crotch Scuba Elwoods have come in, and I tried them on. They’re not being put out on the floor yet so this is like a sneak peak at this very different (and cool) look that is becoming available. I doubt they’ll ever really catch on on in a huge way because they’re too different but no doubt you’ll see them around, worn by people who like to be different for the sake of it (people who think they are “avant garde”). Anyway they’re a sexy pair of jeans whether your wear them or not and I love G Star for making them.

Muhsin Başkan yaşasaydı…

BBP İl başkanlığında bir basın toplantısında konuşan BBP İstanbul İl Başkanı Bayram Karacan, ‘Kürt açılımı’ ve de ‘Ermeni açılımı’na değindi. Yıllardır BBP’nin ılımlı ve demokratik duruşunu yakından takip eden biri olarak kullanılan sert sözler ve üsluptan rahatsız oldum. Keşke’leri hiç sevmem ancak ‘Muhsin Başkanımız yaşasaydı’ diye düşünmeden de edemedim. Elim bir helikopter kazasında kaybettiğimiz Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu ağabeyimiz yaşasaydı, BBP’nin duruşu bugünkü sergilenen duruşla bağdaşırmıydı? Evet, bağdaşırdı, cevabını vermek istese de dilim, yüreğim farklı denizlerde yol alıyor. Aklıma Muhsin Başkanımızın Türkiye sorunları üzerine yaptığı yorum geliyor. Hiçbir kelime veya cümleyi atlamadan paylaşmak istiyorum:

‘Varolan sorunlar Türkiye’nin sorunları. Hep beraber bunları çözeceğiz. Hangisi varsa da ne varsa da hepsini demokrasi içerisinde kalarak çözeceğiz. Ben böyle bakıyorum meseleye. Eğer siz Türkmen sorunu Kürt sorunu korsanız, masaya oturduğunuzda o zaman sorun etnik olduğu için de çözüm etnik istenecektir. Bu da ülkenin üniter yapısını bozacak, Türkiye’yi birliğe değil bölünmeye götürecek tartışmaları gündeme getirecektir. Yalnız bunu eğer siz insanlarımızın doğuştan gelen hususiyetleri var. Bu hususiyetleri kullanması olarak ifade ediyorsanız biz tabii ki herkesin doğduğunu elde etmiş olduğu tüm hakları korkusuzca yaşamasından yanayız.’

Muhsin Başkanımızın bu sözlerini şöyle algılamıştım zamanında, vatanımızın Türkiye’nin birliğini zedelemeden herkes barış içerisinde, doğduğu andan itibaren kazandığı tüm haklarını korkusuzca yaşasın. Artık demokrasi çerçevesi içerisinde problemler çözülsün. (Silah yerine Mecliste söz ve kalem kullanılsın)

Bugün atılan adımlar medya’da abartılıyor, DTP ve PKK yandaşlarının ‘kahramanlık’ hikâyeleri ve şölenleri yüzünden, çözüme giden yollar baltalanıyor. Muhsin Başkan yaşasaydı, bu durumda sabır ve sebat içerisinde bekleyip durumun neticesine bakmamız gerektiğini vurgulardı diye düşünüyorum. Sergilenen her Türk evladının kanına dokunur, sonuçta PKK terör örgütü üyesi insanların hiç cezaevinde yatmadan serbest kalmasından bahsediyoruz. Kendileri yiğit vatan evlatlarını şehit eylemediler ise bile, öldürenlere yardım ve yataklık etmişlerdir. Türkiye’ye yıllar yılı yüz binlerce zarar ettirmişlerdir. Duygusal ve manevi kayıplardan bahsetmek bile istemiyorum. Ancak provokasyonlar vatanımızı yıllar yılı kasıp kavurdu, terör hortlatıldı, olmayan ayrılıklar yaratılıp oyuldukça oyuldu. Kardeşler birbirine düşürülerek izlenildi. Bu duruma dur demek gerekiyor, bazı tavizler veriliyor gibi görünse de, neticede güzel bir Türkiye ortaya çıkacak diye ümit ediyoruz. Az sabırla çok ileri bir noktaya varacağımıza inanıyorum.

İnanıyorum ama bugün ciddi şok yaşadım. Karacan’ın ‘Açılımlar’ hakkındaki açıklamaları MHP’nin ağzından çıkabilecek sözler niteliğindeydi. Hoşgörü ve tevazu’dan eser yoktu. Bazı haklı noktalara dikkat çekilmiş olsada genel itibariyle üslup çok sertti. Bunu bir yere kadar anlamak mümkün, ancak yine de BBP’nin yıllar yılı sergilediği duruşuna çok zıt bir tutum sergileyen Korucan, hiçte ılımlı barışçıl mesajlar vermedi. Hükümeti ABD-AB ortak projesini Anadolu sahnesinde sergilemekle suçlayan BBP yetkilileri, ‘Bu ülkede aklı başında hiç kimse terörün devam etmesini istemez. Hele hele böyle bir meselede dünyanın en büyük bedelini ödemiş Türk Milleti hiç istemez. Fakat böylesi de aklı başında herkesin kanına dokunuyor.’ sözleriyle ‘açılım şovlarına’ karşı açık tavırlarını belirttiler. Katılıyoruz. Ancak, ufkumuzu geniş tutmamız gerekiyor. Olanları tavsif etmiyorum, edemem. Şovlar bunlar fazla, onlar kahraman değiller, onlar Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin sağladığı ve dünya’nın hiçbir yerinde görülmeyen bir ‘af’ sürecinden faydalanmaktalar. Etrafındaki insanlara nasıl ‘kahraman’ diye tanıtabiliyorlar kendilerini anlamıyorum. Zafer işaretleri de bu erbapta çok saçma ve abes kaçıyor. Bu günlerde geçecek diye ümit ediyoruz ve gönlümüzdeki duyguların mantığımızla karışmasına izin vermiyoruz.

Ağabeylerim, Muhsin Başkanımızın yolundan gitmeye cümlemiz ant içmişiz. Kimse o’nun duruşundan vazgeçmek istemez ve bıraktığı mirasa sahip çıkmak ister. Biz de öyle siz de öyle. Bu hususta çok dikkat etmemiz gereken noktalar var. Muhsin Başkan vefatından önce, doğu illerimize çok önem vermiştir. Oradaki durumu ciddi önemsiyordu. Bugün gelinen nokta, çok kritik bir nokta. Bunu kimse inkâr edemez. Etmiyor da. Kimse ‘şov’ gösterilerini tavsif etmiyor, edemez de. Bilmemiz ve anlamamız gereken şey şudur: ‘gün savaş kavga günü değildir, sabır zamanıdır’ , sabrımızın elbet bir karşılığı olacaktır. Kimse bu vatanın bölünmesini istemez, isteyemez. Bölünmesi mümkün de değildir. Bu bir Kürt veya Ermeni Açılımı tartışması değildir. Yaşanılan sorunlar daha geniştir ve indirgenemez. Tek isteğim, isteğimiz, Muhsin Başkan’a vefa adına, o’nun ılımlı demokratik çizgisinden ayrılmayalım ve olaylara biraz daha sabırlı yaklaşalım.

Todos sabemos que se suele llamar “nativos digitales” a las personas de la generación tecnológica más avanzada de la historia, hasta ahora. Pero ¿es cierto que todos los jóvenes provenientes de esta era son nativos digitales? ¿realmente en España la tecnología y enseñanza tecnológica es la correcta para afirmar que todos somos “Nativos Digitales”?

Un Twittero, escribió en su Tumblr esto, lo cito ya que no tiene ningún desperdicio todo lo que dijo.

No hay “nativos digitales” Hoy en una charla que tuve en el EatsAndTwitts hablé con una persona dedicada a la aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías a la educación. La charla se volvió más interesante cuando hablamos del tema de los nativos digitales.

Según muchas personas, se les denomina “nativos digitales” a aquellos que hayan nacido después de 1980 y por ello están acostumbrados al uso de la tecnología y a un uso dedicado de internet y los medios digitales. Sin duda una de malas mayores estupideces que jamás he escuchado.

Mi edad es de casi 19 años, nacido en 1990, con lo que según ellos sería un nativo digital. Soy muy activo en las redes sociales y uso muy bien la tecnología, pero, señores míos, la dura y cruda realidad es que la inmensa mayoría no sabe aprovechar la tecnología. Empezando por el tema de que aún muchas de esas personas llamadas “nativos” no tiene ordenador propio en casa, ya sea por dificultades económicas o porque no tiene el más mínimo interés en eso. Luego, que aún la banda ancha no se ha universalizado y una importante parte de esos ordenadores en casa no están conectados a Internet.

Seguimos cortando el cerco, ya que deben saber usar bien los elementos tecnológicos. La mayoría escribe con unas faltas de ortografía que dan ganas de que te sangren los ojos, si me permitís la expresión. Luego su uso cotidiano de Internet se limitaría a usar programas de mensajería instantanea (en el 95% MSN)y Tuenti, red social excepcionalmente falta de funcionalidades avanzadas.

Cribando a toda esa gente, un porcentaje muy reducido de jóvenes, en torno al 15-20%, podría considerarse como posibles nativos digitales, que son asiduos a foros, quizá tenga una cuenta en facebook y lea algún que otro blo muy conocido. Si se quisiera encontrar al realmente “nativo digital”, se tendría que llegar a jóvenes que usasen varias redes sociales y servicios en Internet que consultasen cada día, preferiblemente que generasen contenido (blogs o webs). Tras todo esto, solamente nos queda un porcentaje excepcionalmente pequeño (5%-10% aproximadamente) de la juventud española que es nativo digital puro.

¿Se puede consideran generación de nativos digitales cuando solamente el 5% de los jóvenes conecen una amplia gama de servicios en Internet, con otro 20% que usase Internet a nivel más que aceptable y el resto solamente se quedarían en MSN y Tuenti?

Sin ir más lejos, estaba en un grupo de instituto de clase media-baja. Yo era el único de 30 personas que conocía Facebook, Twitter, Flickr y la mayoría de servicios en los que se requiere una mayor compresión, el resto solo conocía Tuenti y MSN, excepto dos personas que no lo conocían y no sabían prácticamente. De esos 27, más de 20 no tenía ordenador en su casa, ya no digamos propio.

Eso en términos de cantidad, ya que en temática de edad, más de lo mismo. Conozco gente de 20-30-40-50 años que maneja las tecnologías mejor que muchos jóvenes de hoy en día, aunque siempre serán un porcentaje pequeño de sus grupos de edad.

No se puede consideran gente realmente tecnologificada (adjetivo de invención propia sin comprobar en el diccionario de la RAE) cuando apenas un cuarto de los jóvenes usa bien la tecnología de la comunicación. Se tendría que redefinir estos términos y dejar de generalizar.

LadyHawke, artista neozelandesa. Su música tiene guiños al electropop más ochentero. Disfrutad de esta canción.

Según quien te la cuente, la historia de Dexy’s Midnight Runners es la de la típica banda one hit wonder de los 80 o la de uno de los grupos más visionarios de esa década, por integrar el soul al pop, sonido que permitió la aparición de los Waterboys.

Sea lo que sea, para mí lo más curioso de los de Birmingham es la polémica sobre el origen de su hit más conocido “Come On Eileen”, porque ilustra perfectamente un caso de robo creativo.

Todo empieza por el carácter frío e insoportable de su líder, Kevin Rowland quien, al parecer, durante las giras obligaba al resto del grupo a viajar en autobús mientras él se desplazaba cómodamente en avión. Aunque lo mismo les hubiese dado estar juntos porque, según contaron después el resto de la banda, Rowland ni siquiera se dignaba a dirigirles la palabra.

La tensión entre los miembros del grupo hizo que Kevin Archer -fundador junto a Rowland- se hartara y dejara a los Dexy’s para formar The Blue Ox Babes. Y, según cuenta el propio Archer en una entrevista a Mojo, el mismo día en que anunciara su marcha a Rowland, éste que ni pestañeó, encima le obligó a enseñar los acordes de las canciones a su sustituto, Billy Adams.

Ya una vez fuera de los Dexy’s, Archer fue tan ingenuo como para dejar a Rowland una cinta con tres canciones para su futura formación, entre las que se incluía “What Does Anybody Ever Think About”. Y lo siguiente que supo es que “Come On Eileen” estaba incluida en el nuevo disco de Dexy’s, “Too-Rye-Aye”, llegando a número 1 en todo el mundo.

Pero lo peor no fueron la similitudes en los arreglos de violines de ambas canciones, sino la traición de la cantante de folk Helen O’Hara, que grabó junto a Archer la demo y a la que Rowland, tras escucharla en la cita de marras, convenció para que se pasara a los Dexy’s.

Rowland no reconoció el robo creativo hasta 1993, pero al final tuvo que pagar a Archer los royalties por “Too-Rye-Aye”.

Wow.

I just had the biggest WoW adrenaline shot in quite a long while. And it’s a result of a completely trivial “achievement” as well! But I guess I should give a small heads-up on what’s happened the past few months before I go into details, so here goes!

I quit!

No really, I did quit playing WoW. First I quit raiding officially, somewhere around early July. After much contemplating and feeling generally down about the whole WoW and raiding thing, I made an application to Redemption on the 22nd of July, wanting to go back to my roots and see if I could find the spark of motivation in me again. It wasn’t the best idea in retrospect, and that said I didn’t get a spot in their community either. But at the same time former members also told me pretty much what I already knew at the back of my mind – the community is hardly the same as it once was, back when I was still raiding with them in TBC.

However. This threw me off raiding all together, and I spent the remaining time in-game pretty much sobbing over how miserable my situation was, having no place to really raid that I felt at home with, and at the same time feeling very inadequate at everything I attempted doing. I looked rather dark and gloomy for my WoW career.

Then came Aion – Towers of Eternity. The game finally released, and from that moment on, I don’t believe I logged on WoW even once until the subscription had ran out anyway – not a message left anywhere, not a word said. I simply forgot about the game in my hysteria to play Aion. And so I did, and I should’v blogged about it probably – and I did post quite a lot of Tweets about it as I’ve more or less moved to Twitter for my main social networking needs.

Anyway. I got to level 33 in Aion, reuinted with a oldtime online friend of mine, and we played together quite a bit – I also attempted running my own social leveling guild in the game, Beyond Daylight (Respectfully stolen from whoever used that name in the Open Beta). It didn’t turn out too great, as in the end the active and nice members seemed to vanish slowly, and it was mostly only me and my friend there – and he living in California made for a bit of a time difference to deal with as well, and it was hard to actually get playtime together. Eventually I seem to have burned out, somehow – as I no longer play the game. I didn’t even consciously stop playing – it just happened. I don’t really know when. I lived 14 days at my parents house, taking care of business while they had the first vacation in about 11 years, so I had to stick to proper sleeping habits and such, and actually had to work – so had very little, if any, time for MMO gaming, or any gaming at all – though I did some Xbox gaming on the off hours and at night, exploring the fun Arcade options available.

Eventually I start being drawn towards WoW again, reading MMOChamp daily, seeing TFR do great progress such as Yogg+1 (25Man), seeing Realm First Algalon 25Man go down on Horde side, and so forth – what a surprise, yeah? But contrary to how I had thought I’d be pulled back into the game, I ended up spontaneously using the newly implemented Faction Change option – and promptly logged on my old lady Avael, emptied her mailbox, logged a few alts to mail some gold over, and then shipped her over to Horde side, in the form of a Blood Elf! I felt I needed a change of pace, environment, and friends – to make sure I didn’t just feel crap again re-subscribing.

Once settled into this new body and shape, I quickly enough joined up on The Flaming Ruby’s horde-side alt guild, The Frozen Sapphire (See wut we did thar?) – and started leveling. I don’t quite know how I did it, or why I felt so motivated to do it – but I ended up leveling Avael to 80 in two sittings or so, or frankly, one, not counting the first login on horde side after transferring late in the evening. I managed to maintain rested XP bonus from start to finish, which made leveling rather pleasant speed-wise even without Heirloom shoulders (I decided those were better off staying on Ally side – patch 3.3 seems to make this irrelevant anyhow), also speccing a proper Shadow spec helped a lot. It didn’t take long either way – and ironically, after having previously promised myself to never ever do a Argent Tournament daily quest ever again – having concluded they would just depress me and make me feel inadequate and slow again – I ended up dinging 80 on one of those very quests.

Even more ironic is the fact that ever since the ding 80, which occurred on 30th of October, some 19 days ago at the time of writing – I’ve been doing all the Argent Tournament dailies available to me, as well as the Sons of Hodir ones, every single day. For a little over a week I’ve even been doing them on Alliance side as well just fo’ kicks, and to make some gold (That I don’t really need – go figure). I don’t really know why I find it to be easy, doable – almost fun. By any normal standards this is the kind of thing that sucks every bit of motivation and excitement out of the game for me. But here I am, doing dailies like there’s no tomorrow – and making a damn good profit doing so. Working on the 4th faction championing bit on Avael, in big contrast to Ameliá’s progress, she’s barely starting her 2nd faction at the moment. Shows how my motivation shifted, eh? Amazing what a little WoW break can do.

Outside of daily quests and such, Avael has actually seen a hell of a lot of action in heroics and some raids after dinging – I’ve even managed to collect the amount of badges needed and gotten myself 2 parts of Tier 8.5 for her – as well as only having 2 lvl70 items remaining on her outfit, the rest replaced with various Lvl80 epics – all enchanted, and yes, gemmed with epic gems. A few people have giggled at me for socketing iLevel 200 items with epic cuts and basically top-end enchants, but well… I can afford it now. I even have some 2k gold to spare, as of tonight. Which is amazing on it’s own – 2k gold is a big amount for me. Considering that I’ve actually spent more like 4k since dinging 80 – I’m even more amazed at what I’ve done in the amount of time given. So I feel able to virtually hasten my progress a bit by being generous with gemming and enchanting (Though I refuse buying crafted gear – waste of gold these days, BiS ToTGC items nonwithstanding – but those are overkill for now).

I feel good about this piece of shit game again.. Not only am I doing a fairly decent job (I won’t even try to say I’m doing a “Good” job comparing to how fast some people gear their alts, but at least I’m not embarrassing myself) at gearing this chick up, I’m also, more importantly, enjoying to do so – and even more important yet… I’m enjoying to play her. I feel confident, playing again. I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to work things out after dinging 80 – at the time of doing so, I quietly sighed and thought something along the lines of “Well here starts the instance grind, then the Heroic grind, then the Naxx pugging, then maybe I can start playing like I wish to do” – But then, as if fate had always wanted me to play Avael after all – I get invited to heal my first heroic instance merely ~40 seconds after hitting 80. After trying to explain that it was probably not a good idea – the person inviting me stubbornly stood his ground on that it would surely go fine as long as I had a clue – and I gave in and agreed on giving it a whirl. Thank you – that invite alone probably meant a lot to my confidence on this character.

Is my UI playing tricks on me?

I had Discipline as my offspec while leveling, or rather, my main spec while leveling with my offspec.. Either way – it was a PVP oriented Discipline spec, so I quickly went to respec a sort of PvE Discipline spec I came up with at the top of my head while they were waiting to summon me – in retrospect I did a good job at it, as the build I implemented later that night only had a point or two shuffled around.

We proceeded to do the instance anyhow – and while easy enough, starting with The Nexus heroic, our group did feature a under geared tank, and lets not even speak about under-geared healing.. I was, at this point, wearing the exact same gear I wore during my last TBC raids – not having found any worthy upgrades while leveling, nor really wanting to replace the memorable items unless the stats differed slightly more than just 1 or 2 spirit/spellpower/intellect. The result of this was going to HC’s with a 29k HP tank, and a healer with 12k mana + some 1600 Spell power, buffed.

To my surprise, we only had one death I believe, on our way to the final boss, which also went down smoothly without any deaths. Granted I spent probably around 25 drinks doing the instance, since pretty much every single trash and boss pull resulted in me mana starved – but thanks to Disc’s inherently powerful healing (And shielding) capabilities, Penance in particular putting out very impressive numbers in a very short amount of time – it went really really smooth. I was commended a good job done on the healing part at the end, and that actually felt really good. Playing DPS really never nets you the same kind of appreciation, as it’s very hard to judge whether a DPS player or in fact even a tank is doing those extra things to aid the group – I’ve always done those myself on Ameliá, and tanking on Ninriel, but I don’t believe I’ve ever had any kind of compliments besides the occasional “nice dps” based on recount listings – something which isn’t hard to achieve in most pugs where the other players more often than not don’t even have a clue how to play their own class. Slight exagguration – but you get my point. Tanks usually aren’t appreciated for being good and situationally aware either – we’re somehow expected to be perfect in that regard, and whenever we’re not – it’s ranted about.

Healing is also very self-rewarding to play, since you are automatically punished when failing – someone dies, that feels upsetting, and when someone dies it’s very often blamed, and rightfully so, on the healer. A good healer doesn’t only do the necessary – a good healer also saves the DPS and Tanks from their own mistakes, in my opinion. Buttpulls or unfortunate situations are plentiful in pugs and raids alike, and in my experience as a DPS player – those are the situations where you end up dying, or wiping the group completely – unless the healer is good in the aforementioned fashion. That’s where I reckon I earn my compliments – by taking initiative and pulling the group basically back from death’s doorway when shit hits the fan!

And this is how it’s been going for the past two weeks or so. Doing heroics, lots of ToC 5m as well where I got ridiculously lucky one day. Not only did I get a solid group with, while somewhat flimsily equipped, very competent members – we did ToC non-heroic a few times in a row, which quickly net me not just a few, but every single cloth/caster drop in the instance bar the healing ring – in some 2 runs. I got them all since there’s wasn’t even any other clothie present – we also finished off by plowing through a Heroic mode where I picked up a piece as well.

The result was me wearing large amounts of iL200 items, as well as the very fancy, and for Disc, very very good Int trinket (Tears of the Vanquished). I’ve been using my Sunflare and accompanying Heart of The Pit offhand for a long time, but replaced the dagger with a Naxx10 one a few days ago – which was some 126 Spell Power upfront with enchants included- no small upgrade there. Still needing a offhand upgrade, as well as a new trinket – but I’m still sticking to, and very much loving my Memento of Tyrande – it’s hard to replace even for a new 80! Currently I’m tipping over the edge towards 2000 Spell Power self-buffed, some 500/300mp5, and a healthy 10% Spell Haste – as far as I’m concerned Haste is pretty much capped for me at 11%, and EJ suggest not stacking haste over this – although I’ll see how I end up healing personally. Currently my playstyle is somewhat cloth-paladin in nature, where Flash Healing like a mofo is my most popular choice of tactic – inbetween Penance usage and PW:Shield spamming to keep up Weakened Soul on important target, as well as the fact my shield is worth some ridiculous 8-9k healing/mitigation alone.

Between Heroics, Naxx10, partial Naxx25 and more – I feel my healing as developed quite well, considering Priest healing is nothing like it was back in TBC – removal of downranking alone being an annoyance in my mind, but I guess it was necessary to some degree. I realised I was sporting some 31% crit in most raids as Discipline, so I changed spec yet again to shift this into shorter Greater Heal cast time, since frankly Crit in and of itself is not considered an extremely attractive stat and losing 5% of it to -0.5 sec on Greater Heal cast time seemed a good shift. I’m still not sure how much use I see in Crit myself, but I knew I needed a faster Greater Heal, at least until my Spellpower increases to decent levels – I found while tank healing that when it got heavy – 1.1 second Flash Heals just barely kept up inbetween Penance and shields and PoM (And occasionally, given a free GCD and ample mana – Renew). This is when healing required was soaring up to 5-6k+ HPS though mind – Flash Heal alone provides some 4k of this at the moment, if I’m to believe my addon’s theorycrafting (DrDamage, oh how I love thee). Flash Heal is still more Healing per Mana than Greater Heal, probably much thanks to the Disc spec missing out on absolutely all GH-boosting talents from Holy – but Greater Heal now casts at some 2.2 seconds, or 1.7 seconds with Borrowed Time up – which is pretty much 100%, or at least, on demand. This gives me 6′xxx HPS upfront when needed – not to mention a hasted 9k Greater Heal often turns out more worth the time than two or three Flash Heals, especially when doing more hectic healing as I learned tonight…

Stokin’ the Furnace

Now we get to the part that I loved about tonight. After having done dailys and such, and an instance or two, I ended up idling in Silvermoon, and happened to catch sight of a “LFM Ulduar 10man – needing Healer and a couple of DPS” on Trade. “Well, hell why not” I say, and ask for an invite – and promptly get one. It was now 23:40 or so server time, and the hopes I had for the group to succeed  was rather small – I was mostly expecting a disband at the first trash pull after Flame Leviathan, or something along those lines.

To my surprise the group seemed fairly friendly and intelligent, and although 100% pug as no one really knew each other, it turned out to form nicely without any bickering – in fact, everyone seemed to be in a jolly good mood. After waiting close to an hour to get the last spot filled – we ended up with a setup of 2 tanks, 2 healers, and 6 DPS – but here came the scary part for me. I realised that my healing partner was, like me, a mostly Tank-healing focused one. Holy Paladin. How does a Holy Paladin and a Discipline Priest deal with some of the Ulduar healing, I wondered… But nontheless we decided to give it a whirl, and rather replace a DPS with a Holy Priest or Tree or something more AoE healy if things didn’t work. Not only were we awkwardly set up healing-wise, it also turned out that one of the tanks and several DPS was completely inexperienced in Ulduar – not to mention both me and the Holy Paladin never having healed Ulduar before either… His gear wasn’t much better than mine – although he had a few easy ToTGC iLevel 245 items in his outfit, and beating my mana bar by some 8k mana – so my hopes weren’t improving.

But on we go – clearing up the Flame Lev “trash” and, fairly quickly and promptly, I’m stood there looking at a dead Flame Lev, with the “Shoutout!” Achievement printed at the bottom of my screen. Cool! Not really expecting much trouble with Flame Lev, since it can basically be 3-4 manned even while doing Orbituary – but non the less it felt pretty good. I snatched the BoE DPS bracers from the boss as offspec, and we contently stroll onwards to Razorscale.

Razorscale quickly frightened me after engaging – I noticed that the amount of damage people took was quick, and considerably larger here than anything I saw in Naxx10/25 – although the fight seemed fairly well suited for me and the pally as we both dished out very quick and efficient spot healing, while my shields and PoM’s took care of tanks during raid healing bursts. I had to burn through pretty much all my mana and cooldowns, save a mana potion, but in the end we made it through without a death, one-shotting him. Looking at the Paladin’s mana sitting at 100% for half the fight did annoy me quite a bit, making me realise that yeah, I can’t really compete with their Holy Light HPS, lets not even mention mana efficiency while doing so – but then I remembered having installed the RecountGuessAbsorbed module for, obviously, Recount. This gives you a fairly accurate (in most circumstances) idea of how much damage your shields have absorbed during the fight – and looking at it, I was baffled. Divine Aegis represented some 30% of the damage mitigation, PW:Shield doing the rest – and in total, having absorbed almost half the amount I had actually healed. So added together – I had pretty much blown the Holy paladin out of the water in terms of pure numbers. I believe shields alone represented some 300′000 damage mitigation for 10man Razorscale – healing done for me being somewhere over 600′000. That is pretty neat!

It was a good thing the paladin in question seemed to be as alert and twitchy in healing-style as I was, since we cross-healed almost as if we had been brain linked, and it turned out to work very well as we switched frantically between raid members and tanks, with me tossing out Prayer of Healing often enough during AoE such as XT’s Tantrum. Speaking of which – that was our next boss to try, and to me unbelievably - we one shot that too. Admittedly we had 2 people dead at the end – the first death happening during the first Tantrum which took both me and the Holy paladin by surprise, and we reacted a little too slow to save a poor Warrior. Later during the last few % we also lost a mage to bots molesting him – which we’d easily have out healed if we weren’t so starved for mana and forced to start prioritizing tanks and ourselves rather harshly. But regardless – XT went down.

Gravity Bombs, Nerfed!

We moved on from here to also promptly ones-hot Kologarn without a death, which was quite a fun healing fight, and while so mana-intense he basically died the moment I hit 0 mana with all cooldowns and mana pot and Divine Hymn blown, I felt I could handle it pretty well – it was mostly a matter of gear and some unnecessary Eye-Beam damage. From there on, we moved on to wipe once thanks to some bad luck and an inexperienced OT not handling the two big trash mobs too well, especially not since DPS seem to have forgotten to kill the lighting orbs giving the OT an enraged add to play with. We quickly recovered and tried again – pulling off 2 perfectly executed kills, and thus standing ready to deal with Auriaya.

Our first pull went down the drains as the still inexperienced OT told to do the initial pull, mistakenly ran down the stairs and got ripped to shreds and eaten by the cats – before neither me nor my healing partner had a chance to say bugger all. A quick, and more detailed explanation from our seemingly quite experienced raid leader and MT followed – and on the 2nd pull she went down without much problems at all. A few close calls after AoE fears, but no killer casts fired. At this time – the server notification showed up telling us we had some 30 minutes or so left until server shutdown – and after having a 2 minute break we decided to go light up Ignis – we’d saved him for now, as per PuG standard since he’s a bit bitchy. The trash proved deadly as we died once to horrible storms of fire basically raping 8/10ths of the raid in a matter of seconds, but we quickly recovered from that with a laugh and went ahead to clear the trash more methodically and safely – eventually stood before Ignis with the MT typing out some quick and dirty tactics, and trying to explain to the clueless OT how things worked. We’d also replaced a Ret paladin by now, with a Shadow Priest, as the former had to go to bed – which made me quite happy since the Vampiric Embrace, while not providing large chunks of AoE healing, did help some – and I’m sure it played a role in sealing Ignis’ fate in the end.

We pulled, we fought, and we died! Offtank went swimming a little too far for me and my healing partner to be able to bounce over to heal her, and the raid, and watch out for AoE interrupt, and healing slag potted people, and heal tanks… All at the same time, almost entirely with fast single-target healing, and me desperately trying to keep people healthy with hasted Prayer of Healing whenever I had a spare second between keeping MT and OT alive, not to mention spamming the living fuck out of Slag Pot victims! It all eventually broke down with Ignis sitting at over 50% health – but we were expecting as much – and quickly ran in after dying. The MT apologized not taking into account the OT not knowing things, and explained some more important things – such as when to drag molten golems into water exactly, and so forth. We pull again – and while it worked better this time – the unfortunate combination of me & the holy pala being alternatingly slag potted, and the OT taking extra damage due to small mistakes – we died with Ignis still over 50% health.

After running back in, and simply acknowledging that we got unlucky – the realm notice kindly let us know that we had some 10 minutes left before shutdown. “Pull, now!” – hunter runs off, MD’s Ignis to DK Main Tank – and we all charge into what I figured would be the 3rd and last wipe of the night.

But, man – I can’t even explain how intense that fight turned out. Healing was way off the charts, but somehow we kept trucking, and getting repeated heart-attacks from seeing tanks & DPS below 15-20% health for split seconds, people being chain-Slag Potted, myself included (Twice in a row, fuck knows how that paladin kept the raid up through the AoE healing, as I was out of range for most of it while potted – and mostly busy healing myself silly).  I blew Shadowfiend as early as I could, making sure I spent a Power Infusion along with it to heal as much as possible while the mana bar got filled up to a neat 90% – but soon enough the fear-inducing “Low Mana” sound effect chimed in, and I was forced to eat a potion, heal up as much as I could, shield up the raid, and throw out a Borrowed Time-hasted Hymn of Hope – giving me and my partner a good chunk of mana back – although by the time I was done channeling the 5 sec needed, I had to chain straight into Divine Hymn to save a whole bunch of people from awfully-near-death, but Inner Focus + Divine Hymn sure does miracles. We lived – I was soon offered another Shadow Fiend – and then started the most insane spam-heal-fest I’ve ever been part of, Kil’Jaeden Flame Dart healing nonwithstanding.

I glare at my mana bar, I glare at my partners mana bar, I glare at Grid, and I glare at Ignis’ health bar – server shutdown messages saying 5 minutes left – “We’re doing to die, and we’re not going to have time for another go, crap crap crap” is pretty much what I’m thinking – but somehow me and my dear paladin friend (From Legion of Lemmings no less, good promotional healing right there!) managed to pull the raid back up from pretty much dead, to pretty much alive.

As Ignis passes below 2% health, I can swear I hear the whole raid holding it’s breath – the warrior is dead, the hunter dies – and Ignis the Furnace Master dies… I’m adrenaline shocked like I haven’t been for months, I literally cheer where I sit in front of the computer – and /ra turns into a rather cheery channel as well! There’s no doubt that we all felt very good about the kill – and I myself can’t believe it felt so good to kill a 10man version of a boss that I did “Hard mode” in 25man months ago. In a PuG no less… But there it was – the feeling of awesome.

Me and the Holy Paladin quickly exchanged whispers along the lines of “MARRY ME!!!!” and being generally Very Happy™ to have managed duo-healing Ignis, no small feat in my opinion considering the avarage gear level of both me, the paladin, and the rest of the raid. Loot was quickly dealt with – I snatched an Igniter Rod for replacement offhand – although despite the big gap in Spell Power and pure stats – I think I’ll hang onto my Sunwell offhand for a moment longer because of it’s Haste. Igniter Rod will prove very nice for Holy or later once the rest of my gear picks up, also Discipline and even Shadow.

It was a good night, a nice, cozy raid – and some very gleeful moments had.

Hardly an achievement - but we didn't care!

This drew the end of the night for me and the rest, as the last 4 minute remaining quickly ticked past, and everyone seemed to have a hard time saying good bye in a hurry – I think most of us made 9 new friends this night, and I sure hope to see some of them again in PuGs or otherwise.

Storm in a water glass? Maybe – but the important part here is that it felt good. I felt good. It turned my confidence up quite a few notches as well in regards to healing WoTLK content past Naxx and Heroics! Again – it feels great to be playing this character again, and it feels great, to be appreciated, and complimented. I need those things to work properly – I’m not all too confident as a person, so it really makes a difference when you get to hear you did good. I look forward to more raiding to come!

Also having made some friends here on horde side, outside of the sporadic TFR alt logging on, I’m starting to feel pretty comfortable here. Although I do miss the old aesthetics of Avael the white-haired Night Elf, I think I might stick to this side of the fence for a while as opposed to transfering back the moment I’m geared decently, as my plan was initially. I might wait until Cataclysm, and the opportunity to turn Avael into a white-haired ponytail-flinging Gnome (Who doesn’t want a gnome on a bear, wearing T5 and Benediction? Gawd!) – or maybe I won’t. We’ll see.

I’ve had thoughts on actually leveling my Paladin as well, and me and a friend of mine toddled about doing a 2-man Ramparts and Blood Furnace as a DK/ProtPala duo, both of us in the mid-60’s level-wise. Proved a fun challange, and we made it without too much issues – Paladins sure changed a lot since last I really played, and while I miss some old mechanics, it generally feels smoother now. We’ll see if I ever bring her up in levels, and if I bother to gear her or not – although she would be my 4th 80, which I find rather amusing personally.. I keep surprising myself with leveling – I may be slower than everyone else, and often have considerably fewer and considerably less geared lvl80 alts – but nontheless, I feel they end up at 80 without me doing much – strangely enough they’re all epic mounted and flying in Northrend, too! *Shrugs* I swear someone else plays on my account sometimes..

Cutting the post here – as it’s now 6:55 and I’ve been typing on this for some 3 hours now! I’m curious as to why this Ignis kill sparked such a gleeful mood in me, but I instantly felt like I wanted to blog about it – and before I knew it, I had dug up, edited, and prepared screenshots not only pertaining to Ignis but to patch up holes in this blog in regards to what I’ve been doing lately.

So there is this show that started last year that I’m super into.  Called, you guessed it, Lie to me.   It’s all based on the science of this guy called Dr. Paul Ekman, it’s one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen if for no other reason that the whole thing is based on real stuff.  It’s all about micro expressions, and how you can tell people are lying.  They have all kinds of real life references, pictures etc of famous people that have been later been proven to be lying. (like that OJ kid)

Well every since I saw the show ‘Lie to me’ I have been really interested in the whole topic and with a little research I discovered that not only was it all based on real stuff the main character is (loosely) based on a real guy, who is an actual consultant on the show.  Not only does he consult on the show but Ekman does some vlogs to break down the science behind some of the stuff touched on in ‘Lie to me’.  I, unfortunately not living in the USA, can’t watch the videos but the fact that it’s done is interesting in itself.

I did a little exploring on Ekman’s site, and discovered that he has a training that he offers (well actually there are a couple of different trainings).  It’s mostly for cops, immigration officers etc, who need it for work.  But honestly, it’s super interesting to me so I thought I would try it.  Unfortunately, I suck and put things off all the time, which is retarded as I actually wanted to do it.  So I still haven’t done it… Well BOOOYAH

Chuckles here, paid for the training course, FINALLY.  I actually started the training tonight, but I’ve been sick all weekend and I have a killer headache.  So I’m actually going to go to bed and pick things up again tomorrow.

But!!  I did the pre test already, and got 71% (yay me!).  In order to get the certificate you need to get 80%, but that’s after the training videos and the practice sessions.  And I have already been doing better on the practice session, after the training videos.  I know I’m not up for the test tonight, so I’m going to finish the training in the morning, and then take the final test.  Tralalala.

Plus honestly it’s not very expensive, $70, for something that I’m super interested in, I think it’s totally worth it.  I’ll let you know how it goes, plus now I totally want to interview people and video so I can watch it in slow motion and check stuff… like give them scripts and check their true feelings.

Quick last min note, did you know when a smile doesn’t include the crinkling of the eyes that usually means that the smile is in-genuine.  Take a look at most of your pictures, we all put on nice pretty smiles but it doesn’t reach their eyes.  Most of us ix-nay the pictures with the crinkly eyes because we think it makes us looks old, but those are real and genuine expressions!  So embrace the crinkles I say!

Yes, it’s about time. I’ve been procrastinating this, and blah blah. :X been lazy. I manage to get it done, yay! I typesetted the chapter, however it became half-assed in the later pages… I wanted to do a release for Veterans Day, but meh didn’t happen. Atleast, Happy Friday the 13th!!! Heute ein praktisches Beispiel des Videoschnitts – das Musikvideo zu „Total Eclipse of the Heart“. Als ich es durch Zufall heute auf YouTube gefunden habe, habe ich meinen Augen kaum getraut. So viele Effekte, und was für eine Geschichte (ich wage es nicht, laut zu lachen, aber vielleicht müsst ihr das ja, wenn ihr das Video seht).

Im Moment spiele ich bereits mit dem Gedanken, mindestens die Glühaugen auszuprobieren … eigentlich müsste das doch relativ einfach sein. Ein „Glühaugen“-Bild in PowerDirector als BiB-Objekt in PowerDirector importieren und dann den Bewegungspfad anpassen. Ein Projekt für das Wochenende!

Ich bin gespannt, was ihr von dem Video haltet, kommentiert fleissig zu diesem Meisterwerk des Videoschnitts!

today I’d like to share my equipment list for my sub-10k studio.  Here we go:

• one Canon 7D ($1700)
• one Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 with vibration control ($650)
• two Canon 580 exii Flash units ($420 each)
• one radio popper Px transmitter and two rp Px receivers (approx $750 total)

We’ll also need battery packs for the camera and flash units (add $450), memory cards (add $200) and the lumiquest 80-20 promax kit ($50).

I’d like to note that the studio kit is for location portraiture or wedding photography – not  sports, architecture or nature.  Those styles can be added with just lenses at this point.

for nature or sports add – Tamron  AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 with VC ($600)

for architecture or landscapes add the – Tamron AF 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 ($550)

I rarely shoot on a tripod since I never know if I’ll be shooting kids or pets.  My tripod usually only acts as an assistant to hold my camera while I’m setting up other gear. 

On a final note, I’m undecided about flash brackets. If I were to require one I’d probably go with the Custom Brackets Digital PRO E ($250). It is has a slick quick rotation feature and you can use two quick releases on it.  One to remove the camera from the bracket quickly and the other to attach the bracket to the quick release mount on your tripod.
