The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 was, and still is, a lovely little phone, pocketable, and rocking that lit

The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 was, and still is, a lovely little phone, pocketable, and rocking that little milky trackball that gave it its name. There’s finally a true successor coming down the pipeline (the flippy 8230 not really counting) though it ditches the iconic pearl for a now-standard (and hopefully more reliable) touchpad. There’s a similarly swoopy SureType keyboard and the overall dimensions look very much the same, meaning this should fill the tiny BlackBerry void once again — whenever it ships

These days I got a Blackberry 8100.
Looking at it through the prism of Windows Mobile standards I’m used with, I can say that I’m very disappointed. But that’s another story. In this one I’ll quickly show you how to get things going when you want to do your first app for a BlackBerry.

Things described in this article:
- how to take screen captures from your Blackberry
- how to upgrade your BlackBerry’s OS software
- what development tools you need if you want to code for BlackBerry
- a first Hello World app, including Basic controls, basic message handling, image loading and drawing
- how to upload an application to your BlackBerry and how to run it

First you should know that RIM’s OS evolved in time, and that there are several versions available. My 8100 came with version 4.2 installed as you can see here:

If you need to take screen captures from your BlackBerry’s screen, you might want to read this tutorial or download this tool directly.

Latest OS version for the 8100 was 4.5, so I decided to run the upgrade.
Here’s another tutorial on how to do this. Here’s another screenshot showing my current version:

Getting the right tools to develop my first application for BlackBerry was a real pain.
First I’ve tried the Visual Studio plugin for Blackberry, available on RIM’s website. It worked in the simulator but it didn’t work with the device – and it had nothing to do with the restricted APIs since I’ve only tried to put a button and display a messagebox. The compiled files were uploaded successfully to the 8100, but I couldn’t find them in the programs list.

The second attempt was using Eclipse and the BlackBerry plugin. Lots of settings, if you are interested you can read more on that here. I gave it up when I managed to use the BlackBerry JDE.

So the easy way for me was to download the Blackberry JDE from this link. It also comes with a simulator in case you don’t have a physical device to test.
I currently have the 4.2 version installed.

In the JDE, simply create a new Workspace, inside a new project, and there a JAVA file. You’ll find some code you can use later in this post. Compiling your program will result in a .cod file. You can generate an ALX file from the menu Project->Generate ALX file. The cod and the alx can be used by the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to upload your program to the mobile device. It’s straight forward, you’ll manage to do this.

Alternatively you can use the Javaloader.exe to upload / delete your programs from the BlackBerry. Connect your BlackBerry to the PC via the USB Cable and use these parameters:
JavaLoader.exe -usb load your_program.cod
and to delete the program from the device:
JavaLoader.exe -usb erase -f your_program.cod

Once uploaded, your code will show up in the BlackBerry’s programs list:

Regarding coding, you must know Java. But that’s easy. My Java knowledge level was almost 0 when I’ve started doing this Hello World app, and by doing it, I was able to learn about creating controls dynamically ( new RichTextField), creating Timers (new Timer() .. timer.schedule ( new ToDoTask.. ), loading images (Bitmap.getBitmapResource(“helloworld_jde.png”)), handling paint events (public void paint(Graphics g) ) and handling user’s key inputs (public boolean keyChar(char key, int status, int time) ).

The sample, including the .cod file can be downloaded here:
helloworld-bjde
Basically you have everything you need there, to start doing a simple game of some kind.
And compared to Window Mobile C++ win32 API programming it’s easier. But not as powerful.

Hope this helps,

Me medesima ‘Eh no’.
Me ‘A Settembre’

a) Certo, ma i soldi me li regala lei?

Mobile computing is the way to go, and being a cheapskate almost-late-but-still-early adopter doesn’t make that easy.

Feestje!

Hold it!

Hello. My name is Rom…now’s where you say, “Hi, Rom!” I’m an infoholic

Hello. My name is Rom…now’s where you say, “Hi, Rom!” I’m an infoholic.

A few weeks ago I dropped my phone as I was running for the bus. I didn’t realize my phone was missing until it was too late. After resorting to instant messaging and buying skype credits to call people on their cell or landline phones, I was in a pinch for a new cell phone but what kind of phone did I have?

I came from using an LG 8100. It’s a music phone that had separate stereo speakers and external music controls to play my tunes. I used this feature quite a bit while hanging out on my balcony and swimming in the pool. It wasn’t the perfect phone and Telus’ restrictions never help but I found ways around them and this phone suited me just fine. I’m a guy who loves to tinker and got my MP3 ringtones on using Audacity and Bitpim. Now that I don’t have this phone, where can I go for here?

After speaking to one of my carrier’s reps, they offered me a discount to a phone without a contract price. Upon purchasing this new phone, I would be tied in with Telus for another 3 years!!! Lions and tigers and Telus’ 3 year contracts. Oh my! Knowing this I couldn’t resort to using an el cheapo for the next 3 years. I wouldn’t be satisfied. I’ve recently acquired an Ipod Touch (not an iTouch people!) and was seriously considering buying out the rest of my contract and go with Rogers to get an iPhone. That thought quickly passed as the fees were endless. Seriously! Phone companies make it extremely hard for customers to leave and for good reason. They know that it’s easier to make more money from existing customers than to get new ones and boy that minimum of $200 +tax and maximum of $720 +tax to cancel a contract. At the same time they’ll happily toss away your current account if you choose to renew for another 3 years. Seriously?! Seriously!! So before you sign your life away make sure you’ve got all options covered. Back to the story.

There were 4 phones that caught my eye; the Samsung Instinct, the Samsung A523, the LG Shine and the LG Venus. The Instinct is a touch screen phone advertised as a direct competitor to the iPhone. Really, Samsung? Ok, while it looks pretty good on paper and while it does offer some things the iPhone doesn’t, the user interface just can’t compete and it doesn’t have a large community developing 3rd party applications to back it up. I mean c’mon! Apple’s getting university groups to create applications for them along with everyone else who wants to see their iPhone do every imaginable task under the sun. I couldn’t rule out iPhones being a solution to stopping a meteor from crashing into the Earth. If only Bruce Willis had an iPhone in Armageddon. Next! The Samsung A523 is a little slim slider phone that just sits there occupying as little space as possible. I’ve read about it’s plastic cheap build quality and decided it wasn’t for me. I’ve only owned LG phones and moving to a Venus or a Shine wouldn’t do me wrong. The Venus is the LG Chocolate’s newer model. Whenever I asked Chocolate users their opinion of the phone I always seem to get the same response, “Ehhh…it’s a nice phone but this touch control is annoying.” The “it” feature for the Venus is its touchscreen LCD display which replaces the Chocolate’s touch sensitive controls. Like the Instinct, it sounds good but isn’t implemented well. The LG Shine is a regular flip phone with a brushed metal case. It’s sturdy and does whatever else the other phones do. Then my brother entered the picture and just had to make things a little bit more complicated.

Introducing the Bold, Blackberry’s new flagship model and my brother’s new phone. He asked me, “Why not get a Blackberry?” I replied, “Really, why would I need a Blackberry?” Since I usually research the hell out of things, I was on my way to find reasons why I would want a blackberry. All popular items have their advantages and disadvantages and Blackberry phones are no exception. They don’t have the slick user interface iPhones do but who else really offers that right now? The blackberry communicates well with IMAP HTML emails, Blackberry messenger, SMS, instant messaging all with an easy to use qwerty keyboard. All these features but what about the price?

With Telus, I already had a pretty good voice plan with Super Talk 15. Attaching $30 unlimited data plan on top of this wasn’t too bad. I was looking at around $55-$60/month for my phone bill. “Really? Do I need a smartphone?” I thought to myself. After talking to another Telus rep who was able to give me a nice deal on my data plan, there wasn’t any other choice. I was going to get myself a Blackberry Curve 8330.

Now I’ve had my curve for about 2 weeks. I’m sure I’m making good use of my data plan using up a good amount of data so far. The excitement of my Blackberry has subsided. Can I say that I’m content with it? After tinkering with the device by upgrading the OS to the latest beta (4.5.0.77), installing and uninstalling apps, customizing profiles and ringtones, and adding an 8GB micro SD class 4 card I’ve learned what it can do and what it can’t. After all is said and done, I still can’t view YouTube clips and the GPS takes a while to catch on but these features aren’t my must have features. I’m not going to waste a ton of time watching people lip sync to annoying songs nor am I going to track myself on my commute. As I’ve mentioned before Blackberries communicate well. The keyboard starts off small but you get used to it as I’ve been using MSN solely on my blackberry these days. With instant access to online information everything is within a few keystrokes away. Waiting for an appointment or my time on the bus can be used to keep updated with my latest RSS feeds. This maximizes my time on an actual computer because I won’t be wasting time finding the latest news online. So am I content with it? Yes, I’m very content with the things I can do with my smartphone. When it’s time to upgrade my Blackberry Curve, however, I don’t think I’ll hesitate. It seems a little cheap and dated.

Edit: This post is such a long rant. I apologize for my verbal diarrhea.

I have been using a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 avidly for about 15 months and I like it. It’s small

I have been using a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 avidly for about 15 months and I like it. It’s small, good battery life, acceptable screen, very good SureType predictive input system (light years ahead of T9) and of course the fantastic email management experience that is the strongest point of any BB. What impresses most are the small and many classy and time refined touches you bump in every now and then with regular use. Automatic ‘@’ instead of space when typing email addresses; the ‘.’ when typing double space or when past the ‘@’ sign in an email address; a system message that as you switch the phone off tells you if and when it will automatically turn on next time. Not to mention of course the extremely snappy and “to-the-point” interface, and the myriad of settings that makes it customisable to almost any taste. If you are a BlackBerry user, you know what I mean.

Weaknesses? Multimedia management sucks: outrageously slow in browsing photos, crappy camera, basic media player, no bookmarkable media (that’s when you stop a podcast, listen to something else, go back to it and can resume playing where you left off). No “Add New Number” to existing contacts. Data services (MMS, email) either always on or off.

I have been using the iPhone 3G for exactly one week. It became available in Italy last month but it’s been impossible to find until last Tuesday, when I found it at a local Milan airport (where btw you will find the most knowledgeable Vodafone employees on Italian ground).

How does it compare to the 8100? CAN it be compared to the 8100? The iPhone is a mix of genius and annoyance.

Let’s see the genius. The screen is amazing and sets this “phone” in a class of its own. MultiTouch makes you almost feel like Tom Cruise in Minority Report. The keyboard is indeed extremely effective and comfortable to use, with amazing predictive input and auto-correct capabilities. If you learn to “trust” its suggestions (after a little training to be fair) it does wonders, much better than the keyboard on the 8100 even with the new auto-completion feature in BlackBerry OS 4.5. Changing typing language is a breeze, just one button tap away. If you use Mobile Me the sync works great, and the Safari bookmarks sync is especially cool. The browser is the best available bar none, it is actually so good it make it very easy to waste time on it almost as if you were on a full screen computer… In other words there are plenty of reasons why everybody seems to want it, even those who are not willing to admit it consciously. It is SEXY.

Let’s focus on the annoyances though, on those points that might make you NOT want to buy an iPhone (or at least wait for the next firmware update) but become apparent only after some time you use it.

1) Keyboard. I was talking about the great keyboard. In all its greatness it is difficult to use one-handed; not impossible but difficult. Actually the whole iPhone interface does not seem designed to be used one-handed so if that is of paramount importance for you then the iPhone is not the right device. There is no editable auto-correct list like on the 8100 and the accented letters (which pop up after you hold a button down for one second) are slow to get to because… well, they pop up after one second. This is not a problem generally if the accented letter is part of a word because it will just get auto-corrected, but if it’s by itself (like ‘è’ in Italian) there is no other option but waiting. If you could slide the finger on the side to have the accented letters pop up instantly it would help speed typing up.

2) Email. Writing emails with the keyboard is a pleasure. But if you change your mind and want to delete a block of text, since there is no way to select any text you will have to delete word by word by keeping the backspace key pushed. It’s OK if you have a couple of lines to delete, but above that it is just frustrating. What’s also annoying is that once you write your emails, you can’t search them… at all! There is just no search field. Give up.

I haven’t figured out a way to attach multiple pictures to the same email yet, but it does not seem possible. There is also no spell check, which is new in OS 4.5 for the BlackBerry, and you cannot set a maximum download size for emails if you want to save bandwidth.

3) SMS. The SMS are also very easy to write, but it is not possible to save drafts like on the BB and it’s impossible to delete a single message. You can only delete the whole “conversation” with a specific contact. The MMS are impossible to write because the iPhone currently does not support them, which is a shame given the decent pictures it takes with the camera.

4) Web browsing. Mobile Safari is today the best browser for phones, there is very little doubt about that, but there are a couple of tweaks that would improve it even more. If you’re like me and like to browse web pages in bed, when you turn on the side and read with your head horizontal on the pillow and the phone on the pillow in front of you, Safari will turn the page in landscape mode defeating the purpose: the page will be perpendicular to your head making it impossible to read. There is no way to disable the (otherwise very cool) auto-rotation feature of the page. Update: a workaround for this is to rotate the iPhone 180 degrees in either direction and keep the sim card side of the phone on the pillow: Safary will keep the landscape view, with the lines now perpendicular to the floor and parallel to your eyes.

The performance is not bad, but the page cache must not be working well, because pages reload whenever you go back in history or sometimes when you switch tab for no apparent reason. I don’t know if it’s really reloading from the site or just taking its time to dig the page up from the cache or if there is a good technical reason for it, but it’s slow.

Finally, apart from the fact that it crashes a lot (with firmware 2.0.2), there is no PgUp/PgDn control and no End either. It’s no big deal because the swipe gesture is very intuitive and functional, but it can be tiring to have your fingers constantly moving up and down the screen instead of just pushing on a button.

5) UI. This bring us to the next point: the whole user interface is quite poorly designed as far as locality of input is concerned. User input is spread all over the top and bottom of the screen (concentrating on the four corners) and the widgets on the same area keep changing depending on the application and sometimes within the same app.

Here’s an example. This is the screen Safari shows when in browsing mode

Safari browsing mode

If you tap the Tabs button on the bottom right you will get the Edit Tabs screen

Edit Tabs

the Done button (to go back to browsing mode) is on the bottom right, right where you just tapped. Going back to browsing mode is a breeze.

Back in Safari browsing mode. If you now tap on the Bookmarks button (the open book), the Done button appears on the top right, far away from the Bookmarks button!

Edit Bookmarks

If now you move to the Inbox view in Mail, it’s the Edit button that is on top!

Inbox view

As you can see the UI can get a bit confusing, almost as if Apple didn’t have UI guidelines. On the 8100 there is always the same interface to interact with the phone: the Menu button, the ball, and the Back button; and they (almost) always act the same way.

The most consistent UI widget is probably the “back” arrow button on the top left, but it’s uncomfortable to use with one hand and it could be replaced by the “swipe back” gesture that Apple use in Photos and iPod, if only they implemented it across the board. The only app where this obviously cannot work at all times is Safari, but in all the menus and other apps it would work fine: your finger would be less all over the screen and the user experience would still be consistent and pleasant.

The use of menus is sporadic and not very consistent, different button icons are used to invoke them and sometimes said icon (like the ‘+’ button in Safari) invokes a menu with unrelated items (“Add Bookmark” – fine, “Add to Home Screen” – fine, “Mail Link to This Page” – uhm…). I read somewhere that Apple wanted to depart from the classic “verb” based UI but if you want extended functionality in your app, menus are inescapable. Which is why they sometimes resort to them (like in Photos or Safari) where there is just no good alternative.

The consequence of all this is that on the iPhone it’s very difficult to acquire automatism in executing actions. For example, deleting something that can be deleted is done in different ways in different apps (via menu or via the Bin button), whilst on the BlackBerry it’s always either the backspace button or the Delete item from the menu; finishing up an action requires pressing the Done/Cancel buttons, but depending on the application these can be on the top right corner, on the bottom right corner or on the top left corner-where do you want to tap today?; creating a new message means pressing a button, which is on the bottom right corner in Mail but on the top right in SMS. You get the idea.

Apple should get their head around this and tighten things up before we see apps that interact with the user their own way, screwing up the look-and-feel of the whole platform.

Finally, I miss the convenience buttons on the sides of the 8100. Having to always go through the home screen to change app is slow and annoying. It would be only slow if the applications fully conserved their state when switching, but unfortunately some apps start again from scratch when you switch back and forth. Try editing an entry in Calendar or Contacts and switch out of it: you will lose the unsaved changes! I really hope this is also fixed in 2.1.

6) Speed. With my 8100 I can change profile to “no sounds” and set the alarm for the next morning in less than 10 seconds, on the iPhone it takes me almost twice as much to set it offline (no user profiles are supported) and change the time of one of the alarms (it does have multiple alarms). This is one example of issue due to the slow interface and you can find many more if you search in Google (stuck keyboard anyone?) but thankfully they should all be fixed in the upcoming 2.1 firmware release.

7) Podcasts. The fantastic iPod application cannot do one thing that would be very cool: subscribe to and download podcasts via 3G or WiFi. The Nokia Podcast app can do it and it’s very cool and useful, the best way to always stay up to date with Leo and friends and use some of that bandwidth the telecoms make us pay dearly for. Worse, on my iPod nano there is a sleep timer, but it’s gone here! How can I listen to my favourite podcast just before sliding into Morpheus’ arms now?

Contacts. Searching in Contacts is currently very slow, nowhere near the speed of the 8100 and I have only 1206 contacts. But the most annoying thing is that composing an email from Contacts and canceling it, does not go back to Contacts but stays in Mail. In other words the path of screens visited on the phone is screwed. The web browser metaphor of being able to go back to the previous screen and/or undo the last action, very well supported by the 8100 with its “back” button, here is broken. I can’t really make sense of this behavior and I really hope it’s a bug.

9) Phone. The Phone app does not support multiple profiles which are now the norm in almost every phone I’ve seen (and guess why, they are useful!) and you cannot edit individual digits when dialing a phone number with the keypad (you can in the OS 4.5 on the BlackBerry). However you can add a number to an existing contact, which you still can’t do on the 8100.

10) Hardware. The hardware build quality is exceptional. However not using mini USB for charging and sync is a real pain if you travel often and carry several gadgets. In case of emergency, a mini USB cable can be found everywhere these days and your BlackBerry will work, but an iPhone cable? Not so easily. The old iPod car charger I have does not work, because it is “not designed for iPhone”. I hope it’s because the voltage is different and not because Apple is greedy, but then why does the old iPod dock work fine (charging and syncing)??

11) Bonus reason: no cut and paste. Aaaargh!

If you’re a guy, the iPhone is as sexy as Miss Universe, with all the attributes at the right place, but still learning to think and speak properly. There are many things one can do with Miss Universe without talking, but after a while you wish you could connect with her at another level too. The good news is that with a simple download the iPhone will be able to think like Socrates and speak like Cicero. I can’t wait.
