The Winchester Mystery House was bought by Sarah Winchester, as a normal house, around 1884. She was the widow of William Wirt Winchester, who had been the second president of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and only son of the company’s owner. When he died, at the age of 44 in 1881, she was grief stricken. Having already lost her only child to marasmus in the 1860s. Believing her family to be cursed she consulted a medium who, it is said, told her that the spirits of the people who had been killed by the winchester rifle were many and they wanted vengeance. The medium told her she had to move west, she originally lived in Connecticutt, buy a house and begin continuous construction on it so that she and the spirits could live in it. She was never to stop building on the house and if she did, she would die. She followed what she had been told, buying the house and beginning work on it immediately. She had an income, from her husband’s death and owning half of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, that gave her the rough equivalent of $22,000 (£13,262) a day. The house was originally an 8 room farmhouse that stood on 162 acres in what is now San Jose, California. Construction work began on the house and continued for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the next 38 years. When Sarah Winchester died in 1922 at the age of 83 work on the house immediately ceased. The house itself is set out in such an odd way that certain doors open onto walls and has staircases that lead nowhere. It is claimed this was ordered by Mrs Winchester so that the spirits would get lost in the house. Staff also needed maps to find their way around. There are around 160 rooms including 40 bedrooms, 10,000 window panes, 7 chimneys, 2 basements, 3 elevators and 2 ballrooms. The number 13 also features heavily in the house. It once reached 7 storeys high but following damage in the 1906 earthquake it is now 4 storeys. The total cost of the building work has been estimated at around $5.5 million ($70 million;  £42,079,285 in 2008) After her death she left the contents of the house to her niece. It reportedly took the removers eight trucks a day for six and a half weeks to empty it. Today it is a tourist attraction, it is said to be haunted, and is open every day except for Christmas. More than 83 percent of laborers in the central region move to work in other provinces and foreign countries because of a reduction of jobs in local agricultural areas, heard a conference November 21 in Quang Tri Province’s Dong Ha City.

Reasons for migration included limited support policies regarding capital and technology, along with recent natural disasters which left many people homeless.

According to the latest research, of the 83 percent of laborers, 46 percent are farmers and 23 percent are students who drop out of school.

The Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities held the conference on central region migration patterns, with the Hue University of Sciences in association with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.

Have you ever been sitting at home, listening to your stereo and thought “I wonder if this is as good as it gets?” Well, I have. I guess it doesn’t matter much since the idea of what is “best” is different to every ear.

But that hasn’t stopped me from trying! I will say that my amp sounds better than yours. And just to show you I’m not all talk, here is the schematic of my finest design. For those who know, they know this is special. This is my gift to you, the DIY guy with great ears.

If you disagree then tell me why. I don’t want to hear you whine “OH but it uses TUBES they have DISTORTION”. You are an idiot with tin ears. And don’t whine “OH but it only has 1.5 watts, it can’t drive my BOSE” Again, you are an idiot, I’m surprised you can read a schematic.

More appropriate questions would be along the lines of  “How does it sound with 0V bias on the input tube?” Or “Is there any hum with the low DCR power supply?” Or “How big of an improvement are the Silonex optocouplers compared to transformer volume controls, potentiometers or stepped attenuators?”

How can I say that this is the best sounding amp in existence? Well, I can not. I haven’t heard them all yet. But compared to every amp I have heard so far… things look pretty good!

El sender de gran recorregut GR-83 recorre mitja Catalunya, des de Mataró fins la muntanya sagrada del Canigó, en terres del nord, i Prada de Conflent. Però avui ens volem fixar només en un petit tros d’aquest magnífic camí. En un tros que no queda gaire lluny de Barcelona. En un tros que podeu fer a peu, en bici, o fins i tot en cotxe, en alguns trams. La porció de sender seria la surt de Collsacreu, a la carretera C-61. Aquesta carretera uneix Arenys de Mar amb Sant Celoni, passant per Arenys de Munt i Vallgorgina. A dalt mateix de la collada de Collsacreu surt el brancal del camí que puja cap a la Casanova de Pibernat. Aquest tram és excel·lent. Un camí de terra, però ben acondicionat us porta fins la Casanova en vint minuts. Podeu aparcar allà. La vista és magnífica sobre el Montseny i el Montalt. A prop de la Casanova teniu, en el sector d’obaga, un bonic bosc de castanyers. El més proper que podeu trobar a Barcelona. A la Casanova surten diferents camins, en diferent estat, que menen a Vallgorgina, baixant per un maravellós bosc de roures, alzina, pi i castanyer, o bé a Subirans, terme d’Arenys de Munt, o cap a Mataró. Si ja en teniu prou podeu tornar pel mateix camí després de passejar pel bosc. Sinó podeu continuar tot i que els cotxes més baixos s’ho passaran malament. La ruta corona el Pi d’en Buac, i la Creu de Rupit. Esplèndit panorama. Si continueu endavant, fer-ho en bici és espectacular, podeu decidir on voleu anar: fins a Mataró per l’àrea del parc forestal i Can Brugera, o per Sant Andreu de mata, o bé camí de Canyamars pel pou del glaç, o fins Sant Andreu de Llavaneres. També teniu a l’abast el Santuari del Corredor. Des de la Creu de Rupit tots aquests llocs són accessibles. Nosaltres però, que no sóm uns garns caminadors o ciclistes, ens hem conformat amb arribar-nos fins les perxades plenes de castanyes dels voltants de La Casanova de Pibernat. Un petit racó del Parc del Corredor. Segons on sigueu podeu dinar a diferents llocs. Si heu anat a petar a Subirans, camí d’Arenys de Munt, us direm que ens agrada el senzill restaurant que porta el nom de la vall: Subirans. Tel: 937.951.290. Carns a la brasa de somni. També al restaurant del mateix santuari del Corredor. O bé, si sou a Canyamars, al restaurant La Rectoria.

El sendero de gran recorrido GR-83 recorre media Cataluña, desde Mataró hasta la montaña sagrada del Canigó, en tierras del norte, y de Prada de Conflent. Pero hoy nos queremos fijar sólo en un pequeño trozo de este magnífico camino. En un trozo que no queda muy lejos de Barcelona. En un trozo que puede hacer a pie, en bici, o incluso en coche, en algunos tramos. La porción de sendero sería la que sale de Collsacreu, en la carretera C-61. Esta carretera une Arenys de Mar con Sant Celoni, pasando por Arenys de Munt y Vallgorgina. Hay que subir la collada de Collsacreu desde donde sale el ramal del camino que sube hacia la Casanova de Pibernat. Este tramo es excelente. Un camino de tierra, pero bien acondicionado, lo llevará hasta la Casanova en veinte minutos. Puede aparcar allí. La vista es magnífica sobre el Montseny y el Montalt. Cerca de la Casanova tiene, en el sector de umbría, un bonito bosque de castaños. Lo más cercano que se puede encontrar de Barcelona. De la Casanova salen diferentes caminos, en diferente estado, que conducen a Vallgorgina, bajando por un maravilloso bosque de robles, encina, pino y castaño, o bien a Subirans, ya en término de Arenys de Munt, o que van hacia Mataró. Si ya tenéis bastante trote podeis volver por el mismo camino después de pasear por el bosque. Si no pueden continuar aunque los coches lo pasarán mal. La ruta corona el Pi d’en Buac, y la Creu de Rupit. Espléndido panorama. Si sigue adelante, hacerlo en bici es espectacular, puede decidir dónde quiere ir: hasta Mataró para el área del parque forestal y Can Brugera, o por Sant Andreu de Mata, o bien camino de Canyamars por el pozo del hielo, o hasta Sant Andreu de Llavaneres. También está disponible el Santuario del Corredor. Desde la Creu de Rupit todos estos lugares son accesibles. Nosotros sin embargo, que no somos unos grandes andarines ni ciclistas, nos hemos conformado con acercarnos hasta las perchadas llenas de castañas de la zona de La Casanova de Pibernat. Un pequeño rincón del Parque del Corredor. Según donde esté puede comer en diferentes lugares. Si ha ido a parar a Subirans, camino de Arenys de Munt, os diremos que nos gusta el sencillo restaurante que lleva el nombre del valle: Subirans. Tel.: 937.951.290. Carnes a la brasa de fábula. También comereis bién en el restaurante del mismo santuario del Corredor. O bien, si estais en Canyamars, en el restaurante La Rectoria.

I’ve been thinking about something ever since my show last Saturday night. The event went well enough, though I could certainly stand to work on my presentation. I’m not always sure how to engage the crowd in a coffee shop style setting, but that’s kind of what got me thinking.

I love to sing, I do. But what I love most about singing is truly sharing my heart behind the songs. I write with purpose, and a lot of who I am goes into those songs. Last Saturday night I was  playing my set, and a friend in the audience asked me to share the story behind a song, and I felt like I couldn’t.

I felt like I couldn’t say, in a very public, casual atmosphere, what was really behind the next song. Because there wasn’t a story or event I could tell, it was just about God – how I come to him (and sometimes don’t) and about how he draws me anyway.

Now you might think this means I am afraid to give a public testimony. I’m not. But I’m cautious when I call a venue and ask if I can come and play, that what I say fits into what they are expecting in allowing me to be there. I’m not into bait and switch evangelism.

But the fact that I didn’t feel comfortable to share my heart made me really evaluate what I want in performing. I don’t want to play a ton of shows that are just music and performance – no substance. Somehow, I need to narrow my focus. Either I choose to find venues to play that will be, up front, open to my message. Or I learn to be a little more bold in my approach – even if it alienates some.

I’m not totally sure how this is going to change things. But I know that I don’t want to waste my time or my money this year playing music that doesn’t matter. Because the message does matter. And that’s why I’m here.

It was just announced that Oregon will probably break out some throwback uniforms this Saturday (Sept. 26th) for the match-up against California.  They were first rumored to be like the 1994 Rose Bowl uniforms, however since Nike did not supply Oregon’s jerseys until 1998, they are more likely to look like these.  The team has been testing the new yellow helmets during practice this week and its a good thing that they look like the old yellow helmets and not the Las Vegas Bowl yellow helmets. I’ll include some photos that were taken during practices earlier this week. What are your thoughts? I hope they look good for ABC, as the game will air live on Saturday (26th) at 12:30 West coast time.

Nike has kept these new uniforms a big secret around town, but finally released Oregon’s new football uniforms for the upcoming season. They are similar to the “winged” all black uniforms that Oregon broke out for the Arizona game last season. A few thing to note about the new uniforms.

*All new material – 25% lighter than previous uniforms

*No longer any yellow pants or yellow helmets.

*A new “silver” color is added to the uniform combinations, along with a “carbon fiber” helmet. (down the middle of the helmet it says ‘go hard. go oregon. go ducks’)

Looks like Oregon’s new uniforms will make the cover of the newest regional Sports Illustrated.  SI has Oregon ranked at #11, with Boise St. at #9, should be a pretty good match-up to kick off the season with. (Where is Cal in their top 20?)
