I didn’t get a chance to post anything yesterday as I was busy revising for an exam (for today -14-08-09) It went quite well, with the questions I had hoped and anticipated for actually coming up this time. Score! Anyway, whilst I was revising for the topic of Xenopus laevis T3 metamorphosis, I kept on thinking about Nokia and flagships…

Back in April, the Nokia Conversations guys asked, “What makes a Flagship Device?“.

A flagship phone is something that encapsulates the achievements of that manufacturer, i.e. having the best of EVERY great feature you have once included in previous handsets, but all in one device.

In the context for Nokia, the flagship epitomises the true meaning of convergence. The flagship leads the way; it is deeply recognizable to consumers as an example of the ultimate potential of Nokia handsets and sets the bar of innovation for which other manufacturers should aspire to reach.

Hardware wise, you guys have had every single component that if combined could have resulted in the most formidable handset ever made.

But, as a long fan of Nokia, you get to be aware that it’s part and parcel of that Nokia is number 1 BECAUSE they specifically divide up features for different markets. That’s been perfect for business, but bad for geeks.

The point of the flagship is NOT to be the most sold*; it is to bring the confidence in the brand so that when consumers come to buy a different handset, they will know from the flagship that it’s a brand that they can trust; a brand that will deliver the particular requirements they may need in a phone; a brand that delivers the best.

Hardware wise, Nokia have met and set bars. We don’t need to write an ideal spec-sheet of hardware Nokia should consider include to their portfolio. Most of what we really want from a phone, they’ve been able to produce already.

It’s just that those achievements were never consistently kept within one device.

A while back, it was understandable that Nokia fragment their handsets so that different handsets met the needs of different consumers. But now with competition so high and the general consumer becoming more ready for high end smartphones and convergence handsets, Nokia really needs to make a phone that stands out, leads the pack and show everyone that Nokia is the number 1 brand, not just because they sell the most, but because they make the best handsets.

Here’s a few features Nokia’s been able to come up with over the years; some very recent, some dating way, way back. But if all merged together could still make a phone to take notice of in 2009. (Set in in terms of the feature and a Nokia phone that has it)

This was just to demonstrate what Nokia could have achieved in terms of features in a handset if every time they did something good, they kept it as a standard across all their devices.

* BTW, when I said,” The point of the flagship is not being the most sold”, I meant that flagships should not prioritise the idea of selling more of a handset to compromise on it’s performance/features. That is often to the detriment of the device as Nokia don’t tend to make decent compromises, often resulting in the handset loosing so much of what it could have been but saving so little in the process.

Da war ich gestern in einem PC Laden auf der Suche nach einem Grafikkarten Kühler und dann passiert mir so ein Glücksgriff. Nach ein paar Sätzen mit dem Verkäufer erfuhr ich, dass mein gewünschter Kühler nicht auf Lager liegt, aber dass er noch eine kaputte Grafikkarte da hätte. Hat er mir die also gezeigt und siehe da es war eine XFX 8600 GT 540M mit 2 geplatzten Kondensatoren. Kosten sollte das gute Stück 1€, “mehr hätte der Schrotthändler auch nicht gegeben”. Für ‘nen Euro kann man eh nix falsch also mitgenommen und gleich gegooglt. Aufschrift auf dem Kondi:

Leider garnix gefunden, auch niemanden, der sowas schonmal umgelötet hätte. Bei XFX n Supportticket eröffnet mit der Antwort, dass es solche Kondensatoren nicht zu kaufen gäbe. Da ich mir am selben Tag allerdings noch bei eBay auf gut Glück Kondensatoren bestellt hatte (6,3V 1500uF 10×20mm Low-ESR 105°C), hab ich die eingelötet und siehe da, DIE KARTE RENNT WIE TEUFEL!

Sieht nicht schön aus, aber funktioniert

For those who already know of David Pogue’s Missing Manual series there is hardly any need to read a review of any of the latest publications, like “iPhone, the Missing Manual, Second Edition.” For those in need of a written guide to the iPhone, you just buy the book and enjoy it, without wasting any time with comparisons, reviews, or undue deliberation. You can trust the author and publisher. For years, Pogue Press’, the Missing Manual series, has been a benchmark of quality for the genre. In an era where manufacturers provide skimpy support materials, the Missing Manual series acts as a great substitute.

For those unfamiliar with the series, I’ll elaborate on the iPhone book. It is a great book. It is designed to tell you in an objective casual, easy to follow fashion, all you need to know about using your iPhone. It is lavishly produced in heavyweight glossy paper with high resolution full-color graphics. The text is larger sized and organized in a very easy-to-read layout. There are many dozens of sidebar “Tips” which break up the text and make learning about the iPhone very easy.

The best part of the book is the content where you get a very thorough, comprehensive, and well-organized presentation of the iPhone hardware, software, and services. In six parts and fifteen chapters, Mr. Pogue covers nearly everything an average user needs to know about the product. The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB comes with 64 stream processors, double the number found in the GeForce 8600 GTS but not quite as many as in the original GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB. To make up for the shortfall in stream processors, Nvidia gave the GeForce 9600 GT quicker clock speeds, pairing the 650MHz core clock with a speedy 1.62GHz shader clock. The 512MB of GDDR3 memory has an effective speed of 1.8GHz. Nvidia states that the card uses 95W of power and recommends a 400W power supply for the standard GeForce 9600 GT 512MB.

A worker at Nvidia said that the performance of the 9600 Gt is almost double than the previous 8600 Gt, and after some benchmarks have been done he seems to be right.

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB performs spectacularly for a card in the mainstream category. It thoroughly trounced prior-generation parts like the GeForce 8600 GTS and Radeon HD 2600 XT, outperformed the more expensive Radeon HD 3870 in Crysis and Call of Duty 4, and waltzed past the comparably priced Radeon HD 3850 in all of our tests. The GeForce 9600 GT didn’t beat the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB card or XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB XXX Edition, which is considerably more expensive and overclocked.

Crysis runs quite well at medium detail levels. NVIDIA cards have historically held an advantage in Crysis, and the 9600GT proves true to this record. All of the cards in question maintain playable framerates, though the 8600GTS is still choppy at times. Relative performance rankings remain identical when we shift to high quality testing, but the performance hit is quite significant. Of the various cards we tested, only the 8800GT and 9600GT maintain semi-playable framerates. As for the 8600 GTS, again, there’s not much to say when a card’s performance could almost be charted in seconds-per-frame instead of frames-per-second.

The 9600 GT returned a markedly higher minimum framerate than the 8800 GT, even when repeatedly tested. I suspect this may be the result of further driver optimizations.

The competition in this price range is fierce, as ATI just announced price cuts for both of their competing GPUs. Choosing a video card got a little harder, as it depends on how the price war plays out. Regardless of card, you win. Lower prices and higher performance doesn’t exactly hurt the consumer.

O Turbo Sim é um cartão que depois de inserido no telemovel Nokia, quando este liga e tenta saber qual a rede do cartão, este cancela o teste e prossegue com a iniciação, ou seja , faz um bypass ao pedido de rede do telemovel, e assim possibilita o uso desse telemovel para outras redes além daquela a que está bloqueado…

AMD adjusts three-core Phenom roll-out plan, moles claim

AMD’s upcoming tri-core Phenom 8000-series desktop processors will appear next month, though only two of the anticipated three three-core CPUs will make it to market, it has been claimed.

According to PC manufacturer sources cited by Chinese-language site HKEPC, only the 2.1GHz Phenom 8400 and the 2.3GHz Phenom 8600 will arrive in March – presumably after a CeBIT launch.

Skip a month, however, and May will see the arrival of the 2.4GHz 8750, with the 2.1GHz 8450 and 2.3GHz 8650 following it in the broader May-June timeframe, the moles suggested.

What distinguishes the 8×50 chips from 8×00 parts is, apparently, that they’re based on a more recent version of the core, the so-called ‘B3 stepping’. The 8400, 8600 and 8700 are all B2s. With the 8700 most recently scheduled for a Q2 appearance, AMD presumably decided that was too close to the debut of a B3 part at the same clock speed and – if the moles are correct – cancelled it.

Likewise, the quad-core Phenom 9900, clocked at 2.6GHz, is claimed to have been knocked on the head. Ditto the 2.4GHz 9700.

According to the moles, Q2 will see the arrival of the 2.2GHz 9550, the 2.3GHz 9650 and the 2.4GHz 9750. The 2.6GHz P9950 will ship in Q3, it’s said. All the quad-cores are down as being based upon the B3 core stepping.

Gaming notebook

So I’m looking for a good gaming notebook but it has to be cheap because money is a real issue. My first thought went to Alien Ware and I made myself a killer configuration:

Cool right? The only problem was the payment: $4400, now this WAAAAAAY more than I can afford so, upset, I’ve closed alien ware’s page and went to dell.com as i remembered they had some good gaming notebooks. I chose a 17″ inch notebook, it’s actually a XPS 1730 with the following configuration

Now this bad boy went jumped to a stunning $5000 and this would be also WWWWAAAAYYY out of my range. The first choice though would really recommend.

Check out this sleek successor of the Nokia 8800! Nokia has yet to announce this phone, but this official-looking picture here, and various in-the-wild shots are already circulating the internet like wildfire.

The phone will have Series 40, a 2-megapixel camera, quad-band GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth, and a QVGA display.

Also, the phone’s already been approved by the FCC. It might not be long before Nokia announces it.

Now I’m torn between iPhone and this…
