Hey guys! Welcome to another one of my little blog posts. Today I’m just going to talk about Nvidia’s Graphics Processing Units (GPU)

They’ve always been making nice cards, and always the best. ATI has been a good competitor, and still is, but they just never pull out a better graphics card. I’m going to start at Nvidia’s 8000 Series. They never go lower than #400 cards. So the first card in the series was the Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS.

With it’s half o’ gig VRAM (512MB) using GDDR2, you won’t need the best motherboard to fit it’s PCI-e 16x slot, and you’ll be able to play the best 2008 games at a reasonable rate at a low price! That’s under $100!

Then we have the Nvidia GeForce 8500 GS:
Price: Under $100
VRAM: 256MB / 512MB GDDR2
Memory Clock: 800 MHz
Slot Type: PCI-e
Also a okay card, a bit better than the 8400GS. So an okay 2008 games card.

After that it’s the always lovely, 8600GT & 8600 GTS. There’s not much differents between the GT and the GTS. Though the GTS is slightly better. GT first, then GT:
Price: Under $150
VRAM: 128MB / 256MB GDDR3
Memory Clock: 700MHz
Slot: PCI-e 16x

Both cards are average for upcoming high-graphical games.

Now it’s time for the best part of the 8 series, the 88’s. There are five versions of the 8800 series, 8800GT, 8800GT for Mac, 8800GTS, 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra. I’m only going to be talking about the first, fourth and last card. 8800GT, 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra.

Memory Clock: 1500MHz
Slot: PCI-e 2.0

Bom galera comprei uma 8600GT por uma penchincha .

Sempre achei o lance de VGA OFF board besteira pelo fato de comprar algo so para ter graficos mais bonitinhos hahaha… Mas o foda da coisa é que os graficos bonitinhos chamam a sua atenção e te intertem muito nos games.

Ai vão alguns screnshots tirados por mim enquanto jogava e do 3D Mark 03.

Existe algo errado com o teste será que alguem descobre o que é?!

Na minha opinião a 8600GT da um caldo muito Grosso ainda em GAMES.

NVIDIA’nin orta segmentteki yeni ürünü olan 9600Gt’nin, Şubat ayında raflardaki yerini alması beklenirken ilk testlerde gelmeye başladı. Kart 650/1625/1800MHz hızlarında çalışıyor, P545 PCB dizaynına sahip ve GPU kod adı G94-300. 65nm üretim mimarisine sahip olacak olan 9600GT, Coolermaster tarafından üretilen, sihay renk bir soğutma sistemi kullanacak.

NVIDIA’nın modlanmış 169.25WHQL’s sürücüleri, kart ile uyumlu bir şekilde çalışıyor.

G92 ve G94 GPUları ile yapılan testlerde alınan sonuçlar şöyle.

Kart, ATI’s HD3850′nin en büyük rakibi olması beklenen 8800GS’den çok az bir müktar daha az performans sunuyor. Muhtemelen 9600GT, 8600Gt’nin yerini alacak ve 150$-200$’lık bir fiyat etiketiyle rafları süsleyecek.

So, you’ve bought a really low budget Directx 10 card? Wanna squeeze every last ounce of performance out of it? You bet you do! You are gonna need ATITool to do the overclocking. You can find a download here: http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ . Take a moment and get used to the program. nTune can also be used to overclock; and, can be easily accessed by right clicking on the desktop and selecting “NVIDIA Control Panel”, choosing the “Performance” tab, and then by clicking on “View System Information.” This also comes in handy because you can manually turn the stock fan to the desired speed. So, what exactly are we doing here? Well, a graphic card works using the same basic parts as a CPU does, only it uses different architecture. It has a clock speed for the processor or the core. And a clock speed for the RAM or memory. For the 8600GT, the core comes at 540MHz and the memory comes at 700MHz. By using the sliders on ATITool, I was able to get mine to a very stable 710/750. A higher clock speed is better than a higher memory speed. But, as a general rule of thumb the memory should be equal to or greater than the core frequency. You can use the auto finders to get a general estimate of what your card will do. But, I really recommend you do it manually. Scan for artifacts to test stability, and I also recommend using a 3dMark program. My overclock boosted my score 1000 points. Expect crashes, snow, and a weird screen flashes. Just restart and try again. Don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t start right back up again. This IS normal. Just turn it off, wait a few seconds, and try again. I really recommend you have proper cooling and do NOT exceed temperatures of over 70C. I suggest you invest in some decent cooling if you wanna push it really high. Every card overclocks differently. And, you at some point will hit a wall because of voltage. There are other guides out there, but they require soldering a resistor on to your card and/or shading in parts with a pencil. I chose not a write a guide on this because its way to risky and plus it would void my lovely warranty. And, I can’t afford to not be eligible for the “Step up” plan.

EVGA 8600GT Review

Overall Rating: 5/10

Pros: Directx10, 2 DVI outputs, Vista Compatible

Cons: Poor benchmarks, poor FPS in 3dMark06, preformance/price ratio extremely poor.

The 8600GT is mainly targeting system builders who wish to upgrade into the 8 series from the 7 series.  Basically, the only reason anyone would want to do this is to be able to run Windows Vista since it require Directx10.  And, that’s about all its good for.   It comes with an SLI, 256-MB DDR3, the new GPU architecture, and RAMDAC.  The 128-mbit memory interface chokes and kills the performance.  If you are interested in gaming DO NOT purchase this card.  I benchmarked Crysis on medium settings and averaged 15fps.   On low settings, the frame rate was playable at around 30-50 fps; but it was just so visually unappealing it wasn’t worth it.  In conclusion, if you are looking for a low profile card that can run directx10 get this.  But, if you want to do ANY gaming at all save up for atleast a 8600GTS or the new 8800GT’s.  You will be happy you did.

The last post was from May 2006, since then…well too many things happened:

1. I’m forced to use Windows (I play Lord of the Rings Online: Lotro…and  Neverwinter Nights 2 + expansion, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008)
2. I wanted to try a new Linux distro, but my second HD broke so I’m not going to test that or any distro for a while…
3. I have a new graphic card: Nvidia Point of View 8600GT in which Lotro looks cooler than ever (I have to try it with F.E.A.R.)
4. I hae my own domain/server, so I kind of lost track of my old blog until I had to configure a plugin and use the API key…
