Recently I configured 2 new Dell Optiplex 755s for remote desktop using custom ports 3393 and 3394.  I can do this in my sleep, so when it didn’t work, I was puzzled.  Basically, you adjust the port in the registry, turn on remote desktop, add an exception to the firewall if enabled and you should be off and running.  (Static the IP and configure port forwarding in the router for WAN access).

The weird part was that the remote desktop connection app would not return an error; it would quickly flash and sit there waiting for me to click on it again.  I noticed that if I typed in the wrong port, it would give me a connection error, but ports 3393 and 3394 for their respective machines just flashed with no error.

We looked at group policies, network security, login accounts, etc. with no avail.  A little Googling, however, returned the solution.  The new Optiplexes both came with dual monitor capable ATI Radeon 2400 video cards.  Apparently, there is a glitch in the video driver that ships in the new Dells.   A quick trip to http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx to download the updated driver immediately fixed the problem.

I wonder how many IT support people have had to waste time on this problem with the amount of Radeon 2400 video cards Dell is currently shipping.

Update – May 14, 2010

This same problem occurred with an Nvidia 8800GTS video card using a driver from 2008. This computer had been working with remote desktop for at least a year on this driver and something recently caused it to stop allowing connections.  Updating the driver, fixed the remote desktop as well.  So apparently, this issue is rare, but not limited to Dell Optiplexes.

La solución es muy sencilla y en realidad mucho menos arriesgada que las que se suelen encontrar en Internet buscando por el google, y consiste sencillamente en utilizar los drivers que están soportados pero que no han sido publicados.

Para ello deberemos activar los depósitos adecuados. Nos vamos a sistema –> Administración –> Orígenes de software. Ahí activamos los depósitos multiverse y universe, en software de terceros activamos todos y en actualizaciones activamos también las no publicadas. Después nos vamos al gestor de actualizaciones y refrescamos. Es probable que nos pida reiniciar.

Con este método he conseguido que funcione la aceleración y no me ha dado el problema de la pantalla negra típico de esta tarjeta.

Hace un tiempo pude presentaros la incorporación a la gama 8800 de la nueva GPU de NVIDIA con su denominación G92. Este cambio generacional está destinado a convivir con los modelos más antiguos que todavía incorporan a su hermana menor, la G80. Tratándose de una tarjeta gráfica destinada al mercado más exigente se obtienen unos resultados que sin ser del todo pobres si que se encuentran un poco justos.

La peor parte de esta tarjeta aparece al ejecutar juegos de última generación (Crysis por poner un ejemplo) que exprimen al máximo las capacidades de la CPU y del sistema gráfico (10,8 FPS de media en 1.024 x 768 y tan solo 1,6 FPS en 1.280 x 1.024). Esto se debe a la limitada cantidad de memoria de la implementación: 320 Mbytes GDDR3. Aunque ste producto está destinado a cubrir un hueco existente entre la solución 8600 GTS y la 8800 GTS con 640 Mbytes (de aquellas tarjetas que todavía no incorporan los nuevos chips de NVIDIA) y su precio también se encuentra mucho más ajustado que esta última.

En el apartado de extras, decir que sobre software se incluye un CD con los controladores y sobre el hardware un buen juego de conectores entre los que destacamos dos conversores DVI a D-Sub 15 y uno de S-Video a video compuesto.

Ahora lo único que me queda es esperar a ver si con la paga y con los ahorrillos me llega para ponerme manos a la obra.

The 320MB 8800GTS is not enough anymore. I have to back off on the AA and anisotropic filtering settings, as well as tune down the resolution for certain games. The biggest offender is the aforementioned Crysis SP demo. And it’s just a demo for hell’s sake – I have to set the resolution at 960 x 600, turn off AA completely, shadows on medium, volumetric effects on medium and everything else on high. The maxed out settings means everything is at “very high,” not just “high.” The game still looks better than every other game I own running on maxed out settings, but that untapped potential disturbs me. Looking on the bright side, people who own 8800 GTX’es still can’t get the game to run completely maxed out. In fact, nothing of this graphics generation can even handle the game in all its glory, at least not hardware people can buy.

So it’s back to those damn Excel spreadsheets that I used to build the first one. Upgrading is gonna be a bitch, and the old parts are all gonna go to random people I know. In the end, people like me are just chasing waterfalls. But someone’s gotta do it. Anyone wanna buy me a G92 based graphics card for Christmas?
