mit dem project genetic line startete mirco veitengruber mitte der 90´s seine produzenten und dj laufbahn.

nach einer etwas längeren kreativpause meldet sich mirco 2009 mit releasen auf 8bit, höhenregler, plastic city und merkesdir in der obenden riege der elektronoschen musik szene zurück.

in zusammenarbeit mit basti grub gründete mr. veitengruber das label ‚merkesdir’. die erste eps steht bereits in läden und beeindrucken durch ihre klare linie an gute produzierten groovigen tracks.

im kommendem jahr dürfen wir noch auf veröffentlichungen auf  ‚movida’, die zweite ep auf 8bit, remixe für nikola gala auf soulbox records und einem remixe auf ‚opsm records‘ vorerst gespannt sein.

Een andere bron voor chiptunes zijn de 8 bit collective, waar diverse mensen hun materiaal uploaden, alles wat enigszins neigt naar 8 bit of muziek gemaakt met kleine toestellen. Muziek gemaakt op bv. een korg ds-10 op een nintendo is niet echt 8 bit, maar het komt ook daar terecht. Ook werk dat gemaakt is met Renoise en de Magical 8-bit plugin is er te vinden. Er gebeurd tegenwoordig wel een zware postproductie maar het begin blijft een eenvoudig toestel. Er zijn geen echte regels. Waarschijnlijk is het allemaal ontstaan uit de gameboy – circuit bender ‘beweging, met een zwaar DIY-gehalte.

Oude 8 bit sounds hoor je tegenwoordig meer en meer, zeker nu die vroege klanken terug in het werk te vinden zijn van Zomby, Hudson Mohawke, Novaj Thing, Renfro, Disrupt, Jahtari. Mogelijk een terugkeer naar de jeugd van veel van die hedendaagse muzikanten? Die allemaal veel game-klanken hoorden toen ze met hun Playstation, Nintendo’s en Sega’s speelden? Is Skream trouwens niet begonnen op een Playstation? Er zijn ook mensen die tegenwoordig werken met nog oudere computers en computerklanken zoals de Commodore C64, Sinclair ZxSpectrum, Atari, Amiga. Considered to be both a milestone in shooter design and one of the toughest games in the genre, Radiant Silvergun comes courtesy of Japanese developer Treasure. Released only in Japan, Radiant Silvergun offered two modes, Arcade and Saturn mode. With such amateurish cover art and bearing the logo of some unknown company called Soft Vision, you’d be excused for passing up on this hori memorizer in a secondhand game shop. Don’t. Just don’t. It’s cream of the crop MD shooting, with some of the most frantic action outside of the Thunder Force series. It just keeps throwing increasingly bigger and scarier alien hardware at you non-stop, while cranking the speed up and filling the air with awesome tunes. Not to mention it’s very pretty and gets harder by the third stage than most other MD shooters ever get.

Finally here is the third video in the Kidz In Space video series, Loose My Cool, completing the cycle and taking you back to 80’s 8bit games.

esta vez fue algo dificil saber a quien escojer, hay muchos grupos que valen la pena, pero en esta ocasion, finalmente me decidi por:

es un power-trio traido desde el mismo japon; ellos son
- Midori: Voces
- Yokemura: Musica, letras
- Nakamura: Videoclips
El rasgo más prominente del grupo es el 8bit, un sonido que recuerda a las antiguas consolas de juego, que atraen a un público que generación a generación disfrutó de estas viejas consolas.
El 1º álbum «Family Music», lanzado en 2004 tuvo un gran éxito. Su 2º álbum fue lanzado en 2005, «Family Racing» y su 3º album se titula  «Family genesis» y su ultimo album family cooking, publicado el 21 de enero de este año. Su estilo único de utilización del 8bit y la animación de pixeles tan característicos, son sumamente aclamados.

Su música no se mueve tan sólo por Japón, YMCK participó en importantes festivales de música internacionales: en Suecia, Nueva York, Tailandia, Taiwán y Corea del Sur. Sus CDs se publican en Estados Unidos, Tailandia y Corea del Sur.

Sinceramente, a este grupo lo encontre por casualidad, me pidieron que buscara algo y los encontre, simplemente me quede fascinado, la facilidad y creatividad con la que crean los sonidos es simplemente unica, algunos me dijeron que es algo “patetico” la razon: es porque es musica muy feliz. y la verdad si, es demasiado feliz, es de esos grupos que te recuerdan a tu infancia y que simplemente te dejan sonriendo (yo la verdad rei a carcajadas) no se les recomienda si suelen escuchar cosas como metallica, oasis, inclusive radiohead, la felicidad que traen estas canciones podria ser demasiado.

en conclusion, si se escuchan sus canciones en un dia nublado de repente veran que todo empieza a verse en 8bits, y lleno de colores.

was ist zu tun, will man auf richtiger 8bit-hardware selbst chipmusik machen?

die nötigen heimcomputer und konsolen existieren ja schon seit den achtzigern, benutzerfreundliche tracker-programme gibt’s aber erst seit etwa zehn jahren. bitte8bit stellt die gängigsten (und kultigsten) geräte inklusive entsprechender software davon vor: den commodore64 und den nintendo gameboy.

beliebte c64-tracker wären der cybertracker, odintracker, jch und der goattracker. eine tracker-alternative stellt die mssiah cartridge dar. wer mag, kann sich eine SID-midistation selber bauen und weil man dafür nie genug hilfestellungen haben kann, gibts hier weitere infos dazu. die nötige software dafür findet ihr wiederum hier, es gibt natürlich auch vsti-plugins wie zb das da.
wem das zu technisch ist, der greift zum gameboy: die zwei meistgenutzten programme sind nanoloop und little sound dj.

nachdem sich die erste sendung über den gameboymusicclub mit dessen entstehungsgeschichte beschäftigt hat, dreht sich in der aktuellen ausgabe alles um gbmc-mitglied maria grabherr.
in berlin zufällig auf ihrer städtetour durch europa abgefangen, spricht sie mit bitte8bit über ihren zugang zu musik, das für und wieder vorgebauter tracks und wie es sich mit dem gbmc so musiziert.

donnerstags einmal im monat lädt der gbmc zum open-microphone-abend ins wiener lokal rhiz. neben einem beitrag zum zweiten 8bit-beatles sampler (teil 1 findet ihr hier) werkeln die mitglieder momentan am cover eines songs der 80er-jahre-band viele bunte autos.

I remember, quite clearly, the first time I heard La Roux.

On his student radio show, a friend of mine played Skream’s then-not-eye-clawingly-ubiquitous (yet still-cringingly-titled — Let’s Get Ravey) remix of In For the Kill.

Despite the ill-advised (and poorly produced) breaks section at the end, I managed to enjoy it for a short while; the short while before it became the musical-equivalent of wallpaper.

I’m not one of these unreasonable people (the kind perfectly described in Lagwagon’s Know it All) who expect good songs not to gain recognition. I understand that some songs have a high replay value.

But people take things too far.

My litmus test in this sort of situation was always when, in my final year at uni, the flat below would blast a particular song as regular as the Today Program — as if it was some sort of bloody student national-anthem.

It was always then that I knew that the ship had not merely sailed, but had sunk to the bottom of the Twatlantic.

Just like MGMT, Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys before them, Skream’s La Roux remix befell this terrible fate. What made it worse was I later found out the original was even more dire than the now-overly-raped, dub-step re-working.

Imagine my surprise, then, at discovering that the new ditty warbled by La Roux’s androgyniod frontperson, Eleanor Jackson, was not only ace, but remained so after numerous, numerous plays.

The tune in question, Bulletproof, had homogenised the content of the airwaves faster than an EU law regulating the ingredients of chewing-gum (sorry! Even Jim Davidson wouldn’t tell that one).

I, along with many other people who also frequently lament the state of mainstream music, didn’t give a damn. It stayed as amazing as ever; play after play.

But why?

Well, having listened to it with an ear of utmost scrutiny, I believe the winning formula to be as follows:

The first thing I noticed about the song is the general timbre (how the instruments sound, to me and you). The duo have opted to take influence from the fairly new genre: chiptune; or as it’s sometimes known: 8bit.

Basically, chiptune is what Thriller might have sounded like if Quincy Jones had spent his childhood playing Mario World; it sounds cheap and nasty.

However, with Jackson’s sweet, bluesy delivery (Eleanor’s, not Michael’s), the juxtaposition is a welcome one.

In addition to the degraded synth tones, the song thrives on a quirky chord sequence — typified by the second chord in the verse being an A major, and not an A minor blah blah blah…

…I know, the underbelly isn’t fascinating, but the desired effect of it is. This song has a light hearted, upbeat tone while simultaneously using very few notes in the entire vocal — or synth — melody (about six).

This is achieved by subsituting that pesky A major chord, but keeping the same vocal line as if it were an A minor. This results in harmonic combinations with exciting names such as ‘Dominant 7th’!

Indeed.

Of course, on top of this, Jackson has a very distinct voice — a trait almost indispensable in the modern pop forum.

Put all this together, and it’s not hard to see how the production team of her and quasi-invisible band-mate, Ben Langmaid, have hewn a very distinct niche in modern pop.
