Orange & Tesco Mobile are soon to be joined by Vodafone as one the iPhone carriers in the UK. They have announced that the iPhone will be on their networking starting January 14th.

The plans start at £30 a month for 24 months, with additional handset charges ranging from £59 (iPhone 3G 8GB) to £239 (3GS 32GB). However, if you sign onto a £35 a month contract for 24 months the 8GB iPhone 3G is free.

Unlike Orange, O2 and Tesco Mobile; Vodafone don’t appear to be offering a Pay As You Go option for its customers.

There has been some concerns whether or not the network would be able to handle the major increase in traffic, but Guy Laurence, chief executive of Vodafone UK, says the company has been preparing for the launch for over a year, strengthening their infrastructure for the release.

Hey all. Today, I’m just gonna be blabbing on about the new Ipod Nano. I went and picked one up a few weeks ago (8GB version). I honestly regret getting the 8GB, as i am nearly out of space.

First Impressions.
Its even slimmer than before, has a bigger screen, smaller click wheel, camera, microphone, radio. It has it all, including corners so sharp, it could cut fingers.

Sound Quality.
Now this is the most important section, so i will start off with it.
Yes, i believe they have finally fixed the sound quality of the nano. It actually sounds quite nice with the included apple buds. But, i’m an audiophile, and I cannot live without bass and clarity, so I went and bought a pair of Sony MDR-XB20EX’s. With these “3rd party” headphones, the ipod sounds absolutely stunning. Now to give you a bit of background info, I am not an ipod/apple fanboy. I used to bash every single apple  ipod, for being a closed system, sounding crap,  and being another item in Apple’s armory of cash grabbing weapons of choice. I didnt mind Macs (prefer windows) but ipods were pure crap.

Video Playback/Screen Clarity
Wonderful for video playback. It may be a bit small for some, but i’m fine with it, seeing as i come from a background where i would be watching full feature length movies and 24 minute episodes on tiny 2.0″ screens.
Format support, as with all ipods, is restricting and lacking. A good alternative to this would be the iRiver P7 16GB, which retails at around the same price as the 16GB nano, has a microSD slot, can play more formats, has a 4″ screen, touchscreen, digital radio.

The screen is crisp and clear. Much brighter than the 4th gen nano chromatic. I haven’t been viewing photos on it, so if u like to view photos on the nano, i can give you no help there.

User Interface/Navigation
As with all ipods these days, easy, clean navigation. Though i’d like to say the smaller click wheel makes navigating a bit of a hit-and-miss activity. My click wheel’s center button doesnt want to respond in one go, I sometimes have to click twice for it to register the click. The user interface has changed slightly. It now has a charcoal black music playing screen, which i think first graced ipods with the nano chromatic (4th gen)
Apple have made use of the extra screen real estate by including more viewable fields in the now playing screen. You can now view album, artist and song name in three lines above the album art, with the progress bar down below the album art. I found the constant flashing of black to white, then white to black as you browsed songs to be quite annoying.

Expandability/Accessories
As with most ipods, it has a plethora of accessories you can connect to. I myself own a logitech speaker dock which i use quite often to charge/listen to my ipod. You may experience issues with accessories made specifically for the 4th gen nano, as the place of the headphone jack has been switched. It is now on the left hand side, whereas the 4th gen nano had it on the right hand side. This is not really a problem if you are using accessories, such as speaker docks, with a exchangeable dock port, clip thing, but specialized accessories, such as arm bands with specific holes (i’ve seen some) and ipod cases, there could be problems.

Camera quality
Yes, there is a camera. Yes it records at VGA resolution to a compressed MP4 format. Yes the video quality is average at best, and we do not recommend viewing it on a screen greater than 10 inches. While it wont be replacing the home video camera anytime soon, it certainly will do the job for people planning to catch quick shots and upload them to youtube, facebook etc.etc. The mic is tiny, therefore, expect a LOT of distortion around loud noises, filming party scenes one of em.

The camera did not adjust well between bright areas and dark areas, with some areas appearing much darker than they actually look. All up, i was impressed with the amount of video i could record with 2GB free. I have 40 mins recorded. I was expecting it to complain about no memory at 20 minutes. Just shows how compressed the video files really are.

I agree with the person who commented on the low quality of the “build” of the items, but overall, I’m EXTREMELY satisfied with the purchase.

The items I use most often:

1) Mesh travel bag (drop both iPod & original headphones in it, and occasionally my very fragile Plantronics bluetooth headset)

2) Silicone cover

3) Screen protector

4) Wall charger adapter (which works to charge other devices connected via their USB cables)

5) Car charger (which also works with not only my iPod touch, but also other devices)

6) Car Audio 3.5MM Jack AUX Auxiliary Cable that allows me to connect my iPod to the Car Stereo on my Honda (AUX) and play over car speakers!!

Items I plan to use, as needed, but haven’t used much:

1) Retractable USB cable (I have it on hand as a spare)

2) Extra USB cable (I keep it in the car in case I don’t have my computer bag with me, which has the original cable

3) Arm band which connects to the silicone cover for working out while listening to the iPod

4) Extra headphones (if I want to share something with someone, see #5)

5) Splitter, which makes it possible for 2 users to listen to iPod using headphones

6) Cable keeper (shaped like a fish). Not very good, but serves its function and I keep the extra headphones wrapped up on it

7) Black Silicone cover: will probably use it eventually if the white one gets junky looking

Items I never plan to use:

1) Clear plastic case which seems very fragile and will probably break if used much

2) Leather case: too bulky, and I don’t like having things clipped to my belt. (Lost a cell phone that I clipped to my belt… slid off)

BOTTOM LINE: If you’re not buying this package for the leather case and/or the clear plastic cover, I think that you will be happy with your purchase. I’m EXTREMELY happy with mine!

“Amazing Amount of Stuff”
What an amazing amount of stuff for my 3g ITouch for a small price. Everything is compatible and works well. The headphones, while not equipped with a mic are even as good as the earbuds that came with the ITouch. I am frankly amazed at how much there is and that it is all usable. My husband had my Touch inscribed with a sentiment and I really wanted a clear case but could not find one for less than $15. This package had a clear case and two others, plus cords, cables, chargers, earphones – any accessory you could possibly need. Terrific value!

“Value for money; leather case has a belt clip.”
The items I received were pretty much what I see in the picture, except that the synthetic leather case has a belt clip that protrudes out. It is not removable. So it would not be suitable if you want to put it in a shirt or pants pocket, which is what I am looking for. The photos on the website do not show the reverse side of the leather case.

Other than that, the items were usable. Construction quality is not as refined. For example the USB sync cable that comes with the standard iPod Touch box is of better quality than that in the accessory bundle.

There are 4 cases — a hard plastic case, a white silicone case, a black rubber case and the synthetic leather case mentioned above. Well, I can only use one at a time as they are made to fit my iPod Touch 3rd Gen nicely.

The Sylvania 8GB MP3 player version (smpk8858) is a smaller, and cheaper version of the I-Pod Touch. Just how big of a price difference is it? Well the Sylvania will run you at about $100 if it’s not on sale, but it is usually on sale for between $60 and $70 here in Canada. Now the 8GB Ipod Touch 3rd Generation is double the price at $198.99.

What’s the problem with the Sylvania MP3 Player? You pay for what you get.

First of all, the power switch is cumbersome to say the least. You have to hold the button for a good 10 seconds before it either turns off or on, and the button is fairly difficult to keep pressed. It breaks my thumbnails.

The first screen you see is fairly straight forward. You have 7 menus items to choose from; all well-defined. What comes in the sub menus is where its lack of organization is obvious. For instance, for music there are the following options: you can either resume play, click on ‘all music’, ‘artist’, ‘album’, ‘my favourite’, or ‘record’. What else will you note? There’s a play button and a pause button. There is not stop buttong. Can you play from only certain albums, omitting others?  It appears that you can, but only after every song of whatever album you first selected has played, thanks to there being no stop button. Pretty annoying if you decided to shuffle from all the albums not knowing this would happen. Even if you turn it off and back on.

For this reason, it is primitive and not so user-friendly.

Although you have to wait for it to play through the entire album you first select before it lets you restart a new album or song; you can keep the songs you liked, by creating yourself a ‘my favourites’ file along the way.

If you calibrate this product properly in its settings when you first use it, the touch screen works perfectly. The graphics are excellent as well. You can watch full feature films on it with no problems.

I’d say that if you’d like to experience touch screen, but are not willing to fork out too much money, then this product is for you. We’d bought it as a toy for the treadmill, but it didn’t work out too well since you’re still connected to it through headphones. A transceiver with wireless headset can fix that problem, but without the same quality. It is now just used as my MP3 player, and it’ll do for now.  My thumbnail will just have to suffer in the interim.

Se ha desatado un rumor donde se habla de un posible nuevo modelo de iPhone 3GS de 8GB, el cual entraría en un precio económico al mercado, con el fin de competir contra el tan comentado Droid.

En un principio se habla de una aparición mediante el operador AT&T en USA, con fines de luchar en contra Verizon (con el Droid). La información se mantiene como un rumor, pero como ya hemos tenido experiencias anteriormente, en Apple cualquier cosa puede suceder cuando menos la esperamos.

Tampoco creo que en Apple estén muy preocupados con el lanzamiento de Droid. Obviamente buscarán formas de contrarrestar ciertos puntos, pero el iPhone tiene mucho terreno ganado ya, no solo porque es un dispositivo fantástico, sino también por sus grandes aciertos como la App Store (que no para ni un segundo por estos días) y por que no también, el alto significado “social” que tiene este terminal entre los usuarios.

¿Te gustaría ver por estos lados un iPhone 3GS de 8GB? Y por cierto… ¿Como ves el Droid?

Aunque hacia mucho tiempo que un rumor no me llamaba la atención, parece que los amiguetes de Boy Genius Report hablan de un iPhone 3GS de 8GB (cuando el actual más bajo es de 16GB) por el magnifico precio de 99$… ¿dólares? si, dólares por que el rumor solo hace referencia a AT&T pero puede que otras empresas (entre las que espero que este Movistar) puedan incorporar este modelo a su almacén en las próximas semanas.

Este modelo reemplazaría el actual iPhone 3G que sigue en el mercado.

What better way to end the week than with two fresh, shiny new iPhone rumors to chew on? According to various reports, the iPhone 3GS could get an 8GB model just in time for the holidays, and Apple (s aapl) is said to be testing iPhones that support radio-frequency identification (RFID), a tech that allows devices to sense nearby embedded chips without coming in actual contact with them.

While the timing of both rumors happens to be concurrent, please note that it is very unlikely that if Apple were to release an 8GB iPhone 3GS in time for the holiday season, it would use the new RFID tech. It’s more likely that the RFID integration will come to fruition in later models of the iPhone.

$99 8GB 3GS

Rumors of the smaller capacity 3GS come via Boy Genius Report, which has proved fairly reliable in the past when it comes to predicting product launches by Apple. They claim to have heard news of the 8GB model from two separate sources at AT&T (s att):

Definitely not confirmed, but rather interesting nonetheless. We’ve heard now from two sources that AT&T, and we guess Apple, are contemplating launching an 8GB iPhone 3GS at the $99 price point before Christmas. One source said this was AT&T’s way of combating the Droid madness.

It should be noted that BGR specifically points out that they haven’t heard any of this from Apple or any of its personnel, which could mean that AT&T is pitching the idea but doesn’t necessarily confirm that Apple is receptive. Still, a 3GS at the magical $99 sweet-spot would definitely take some of the wind out of Droid’s sails.

Of course, there is the fact that Phil Schiller said the Apple holiday lineup is set. That should mean no new products, right? Or it could mean that the 8GB 3GS was already on the roster and that it just hasn’t been announced yet. Still, if it is coming in time for Christmas, Apple is already missing out on some prime holiday buying time. We’ll definitely see it before Black Friday if we’re going to see it at all.

RFID

Apple is looking into integrating RFID swipe support into new iPhone prototypes, AppleInsider reports. iPhones boasting RFID capabilities could allow for things like making swipe payments, proximity alerts, and getting data from swiping RFID-embedded objects or even animals.

RFID tech is ideal for this sort of thing because it requires little power, since the data transferred is often small in size, usually only a number or a URL. There’s also the cost benefits of the tech, and the fact that they’re already in wide use. According to AppleInsider:

The cost of RFID chips is now down to just a few cents each in quantity, making it possible to apply them to a wide variety of uses. Shipping companies and retailers already use RFIDs to track packages much like barcodes; libraries use them to track books, farmers use them to identify animals in herds, and the army, theme parks and schools attach RFIDs to people.

The site also speculates that Apple could then leverage its existing iTunes accounts, broadening it to make it a method for paying for anything via your iPhone, so long as the vendor you’re dealing with is equipped to accept RFID payments. Such payment systems using cell phones have already been used widely in parts of Asia and Europe.

If Apple gets in early on widespread RFID adoption here in North America, it could see the kind of industrial and business success it’s been missing thus far. It might become as common to see an iPhone-based device on the loading dock as it is to see one in a Starbucks.

According to  the BoyGeniusReport, Att and Apple maybe be releasing and 8gb 3GS just in time for the holidays. This would definetly help ATT and Apple sales with the upcoming android phones hitting the market. Also Blackberry is also releasing some new handsets before the holidays, this would be a good idea for ATT and Apple to increase sales thru the holiday season.
