77. I actually completed everything on my to-do list on December 2. There weren’t many tasks, but they did take a long time to complete. I had to edit an entire paper, read 2 chapters in Biology and I had a three hour commitment to the Wesley foundation. All of this had to be done in a five hour period, in addition to eating and driving everywhere.

17. Watch all 100 movies on AFI’s “100 Years… 100 Movies”- I watched Duck Soup and Singing in the Rain. I didn’t really like Duck Soup, but I really liked Singing in the Rain. I want to watch a few more before I suspend my Netflix account while I’m at home. 23/100
18. Read 101 books in 1001 days- I finished Crazy Love by Francis Chan- most amazing book ever. 7/101
29.  Be Able to list every country in the world on Sporcle.com- I can now  list 178/196- Only 18 left! I might have to postpone it until after finals though. I have a lot of studying to do.
39. Get an iTouch. I ordered it on Black Friday when they were on sale and I am getting it for Christmas!

91.  Re-Read Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller- I started it last night. I remember loving it so much the first time, and I’m curious what I will learn this time around.

91. Get over 80% on my Physics T1 formal lab.

DONE! Thank goodness. I think I got an 81%; just on target! Hopefully I can get even better on the next one.

Last week’s online journalism lecture was by Rob Andrews of paid-for advice site paidcontent.org – just as Johnston Press makes the news for introducing paywalls on stories like Guide dog is Heanor woman’s lifeline – Premium Article! (I haven’t linked to it. Guess why.)

What he showed us was a depressing array of statistics about paywalls. It seems like the comments on this pro-paid content piece by Tim Luckhurst in the Guardian, which I actually lost some sleep and sweated a lot over, do reflect public opinion. A poll of 1,800 consumers found 91% of people don’t want to pay for their news. 72% want to pay less than £10 a year if given the choice. And newspapers are making a third less than this time last year. That’s last year. Recession year.

I met up with a good friend on Thursday and he said, “So what’s the deal with newspapers then?” It was then I realised the truth of what Rob Andrews, and all our previous lecturers, have been telling us. We, the twentysomethings, are the ones who have to work it out. And fast.

So what tips do I have for the next generation? Am I going to save news, singlehandedly? Not quite. But I do have three not-quite-original ideas which could help soften the eventual blow.

1) Stats change.  At the moment, only 9% of people say they’ll pay for news. But polls like this are misleading. Say to me: “Would you like to give me some money,” and there isn’t anywhere near a 9% chance I’ll say yes. Nobody wants to pay for anything. But the market might force it on them, just as it’s forcing it on us. If the Times goes behind a wall, others will follow.

Even the Guardian, big shouty standard-bearers of free (gratis) speech, might go too. Last Friday I asked Peter Preston, its editor for 20 years, when it would cave. His answer was: “Thankfully, I don’t have to have a say on that any more”. And as perceptions change, so do the number of people resisting. Just look at Itunes.

2)  Ads could be better. This was a recurring theme among comments on the Guardian article (see above). Not a surprise – as Guardian ads particularly are the least targeted on Earth. Most are for Guardian-sponsored events. They need to take a leaf out of the big book of Facebook, which offers me (‘Interested In Men’) extremely targeted ads – ‘M2M Dating in Cardiff’, 50 times a day, anyone? While it’s extremely irritating, bills need to be paid. I’m sure even the ivory-tower (and trust-funded) Guardian could stoop that low. Software analysing peoples’ reading habits would be a piece of cake to build, and wouldn’t be Big Brother, yet.

3) Lure people back to paper. Nobody’s so tech-savvy they don’t still appreciate the beauty of a paper copy. It’s just too much effort, that’s all. So make it easier. The single ray of light in those surveys was 48% of people would pay for online news if it included a free or discounted paper subscription. Hello! I think this is people trying to tell us something. You need more brand loyalty than ever to do this – but it would be worth a try. And the possibility of keeping half the readers? That’s better than anyone’s daring to dream.

Well, I turned in my lab. We’ll see how it goes! Hopefully I did well enough to get at 80%. Probably not, since I don’t think I’ve ever gotten higher than a 75 on a formal report for physics, but oh well! I can do it =]

I was just assigned my formal lab on Saturday. It’s due next week Friday. I have two weeks to make a good lab, and bring up my overall mark. It dropped down to a 75, which is the lowest in any of my classes, so it needs to jump back up! Apparently there’s nothing I can do to add marks to my last test (51.4%….) so I need to work super hard on my other assignments ad my bonus lab, as well as studying hard for my test on Thursday. Wish me luck! =]

Wow.. I finally got my picture for the runescape forums. I decided to take one today after I started my thread. It looks empty on my thread when you see just a question mark sitting there next your name. And yes, my thread is doing pretty good. I have 18 supporters now and growing. These supporters encourage me everyday to get 91 runecrafting.

Hello again. I have made a forum thread on the runescape forums. This thread is about my goal to 91 runecrafting. I will need supporters to support me and push me to that goal. So yea, it would help if you could check on the forum and also be one of my supporters to push me harder toward my goal.

Well, anyways.. I have been working on runecrafting today of course. I still haven’t changed my hairstyle yet. I heard from some friends that the new hairstyles weren’t that good/impressing. I’ll stick to my current hairstlye.

I am working on a project inspired by a couple of projects I saw on line, but with some major differences.

Basically the goal of this project is to build a computer inside an NES system. The computer will run the Ubuntu Linux Operating System, and will have 2 functions: Online-Video Watching [via Boxee], and NES emulation.

I have some requirements that must be fulfilled by this project, and I have begun organizing the parts to make it come to fruition. I have included them here to keep me honest as I continue.

• The Computer’s only monitor will be a television. It must be able to easily connect to a TV using one or more of the more common display interfaces for a TV.
• The computer’s grand total of parts in the computer must not be greater than $250.00, with a goal of under $200
• The computers main input will use original NES controllers, which must connect to the console through the original NES ports. This will involve programming a microprocesser, and making a converter inside of the box. Ideally the conversion will be to USB. A sub-goal is having the NES controllers be the computers only input.
• The NES-PC, when finished, must be as true to the original form of the NES as possible. There will be nothing sticking out of the case. The only alteration allowed is the cutting of a hole for the mobo frame. Even this should be avoided.

With that out of the way, let’s give a status update:

Well, folks, I’m happy to report that The Last Song has now officially been read listened to by me. Completely.

Turns out there are lots of miles to drive in Dallas, and some unpacking I needed to do, so between that and the 20 minutes I sat in my car after arriving home one afternoon, the audio book is over.

I think I’ve said this before, but I’m always a little sad when I finish a book. I’m a character person. I like learning the stories of others. [Incidentally, I think this might be what I like most about meeting new people.]

So, the book is over. And for the most part I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t suspenseful. There was no mystery, really. But it drew me in well enough. There is only one regrettable item to this whole affair.

Yesterday, after finishing the book, I researched the movie (due out in January) and realized the main character is going to be played by Miley Cyrus.

And I am so not pleased.

The book-turned-movie has now lost all credibility – turns out it’s being produced by Disney. No surprise there. As a wise old songwriter once said, 

“If that’s what it is, then that’s what it is.  At least until Disney can rewrite it…”

I runecraft at the ZMI Altar also known as the Ourania Altar. I have crafted 17,000 pure essences since the last 5 days. As you can tell, I am tired of runecrafting but 91 runecrafting is well worth it.
