I recently picked up a new pair of Nike low tops while out of town. Within two days of wearing them I spilled ink from a drippy marker on the front top, of the right shoe. I tried scrubbing the stain off with paint thinner but all it did was smear Navy Blue across more of the shoe.

It came to the point that I was about to give up on these kicks and go out to get another pair. Then I thought about color matching the shoes with spray paint to cover over the stain… I tried it and it worked! Stone Gray 94 seems to be a perfect match! The matt finish was even the same.

okay, i am a terrible person and said in a previous post that i was going to write don a letter as soon as i was done updating that day. well, i didn’t. and now it’s the last day of the month and i haven’t written him A SINGLE LETTER. ughhhh is updating this really more important than writing my friend? i cannot believe myself sometimes. i will make them up, but that’s not the point of the goal. i am so disappointed. sophie and i made plans to go on saturday, but it didn’t work out. then we made plans to go today, but it didn’t work out. but, we are going tomorrow and i am counting it as this month! especially since i didn’t go hiking this month until like the 20th!  (2/2 times for 1/12 months)

goal #30, volunteer at least once a month:
today, i started my volunteer position at hope and a future. so excited for the upcoming christmas party! (1/33 months)

working at starbucks makes this goal a lot easier.  this week was also easier becuase of all the family events.family needs encouragement too. by the way, this goal has becoming increasingly second nature to me. i don’t even have to conciously think of complimenting someone anymore. i was just at the store today and i started talking to this guy in line about his shirt and how i liked the colors in it. the design was hideous, but gorgeous colors. focus on the positive  (28/1001)

goal #51, write a chapter for my book once a month:
well, it’s not quite an entire chapter, but they are my thoughts on adoption, emotions, birthing, children, love and separation this month. sometimes, you just can’t get a whole chapter out. especially because i tried to do it this week and it just wasn’t working. this was a bad week. too emotional. goal #60, buy a camera:
did it this week! thank you black friday sales! another goal completed! $5 in savings!!

goal#76, check account for spending twice a week:
still doing well. bought the camera this week which set me back some moola and also made some purchases at as you wish, ross (for housewares, not clothes!) and quiktrip for gas. (2/2 times for 4/131 weeks)

okay, washed hair on friday. oilt today and yesterday. i thought we were over this! oh well, i am going to keep trying even though this month is over. i do like this system for the most part and i am saving SO. MUCH. MONEY.  also, goal completed! $5 in savings!!!!  (4/4 weeks)

well, i needed new work shoes, and i didn’t want to spend a lot of time trying to find them. i don’t even know if a second hand store would carry the kind opf work shoes i need. i’d have to be soooo lucky. so i went to target and i spent$30 on work shoes. that were comfortable in the store and once i got home, i put them on, walked to the front door, took them off and went straight back to my room to put my old ones one. goodbye shoes, hello return!

I started to write a poem about how I’m playing at a coffee shop tonight, but when I was half way through (thinking it was genius at first pen, of course) I realized that it had absolutely no structure. Or rhyme. So basically, it was like:

Alright, so it wasn’t quite that bad. But it was bad enough that it caused me to delete the whole thing and start from scratch.

If by ’start from scratch’ you mean state explicitly what I’d tried to say poetically? Then Yes. That’s what this “from scratch” blog post is.

this week, i have had a sick craving for a sausage breakfast sandwich. nevermind the fact that i don’t eat pork products and haven’t for some time, really. i even went into the mcdonald’s (MCDONALD’S!!!) drive thru on saturday morning before i had to open at work to get one. luckily, they don’t start serving breakfast until 4am, and since that was the time i had to be at work, no sausage biscuit for me! other than that, avoiding fast food has been pretty easy for me.

got back into it this week and i LOVE it! my hair is so much softer and shinier now. i just need to find a really good deep conditioner for it. i’ve hear avocados, mayonnaise and egg yolks are all good for dry hair, but i do need to research it a bit more to find a good recipe.  1/4 weeks.

had an itch for some new sweaters so i cleaned out my closet, took a bunch of clothes to buffalo exchange and got some cute new sweaters! a banana republic sweater, two cardigans, a knit cream colored shirt, a flowy, printed floral shirt and a vintage cream colored heart necklace for less than $50! yay me!

Tom Joyner’s Falsely Executed Relatives Cleared – 94 Years Later

BlackAmericaWeb.com/Jackie Jones—The South Carolina Parole and Pardons Board has unanimously granted Tom Joyner a posthumous pardon for his great-uncles, Thomas and Meeks Griffin, who were executed in 1915 for a crime they didn’t commit.

Officials believe the men are the first in the state to be posthumously pardoned in a capital murder case.

Joyner, his brother, Albert, and two sons, Thomas and Oscar, were joined by Harvard scholar Henry Louis “Skip” Gates and his legal team in presenting their case. The host of “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” called in to the program right after the decision came down shortly after 9:30 a.m. to inform co-hosts Sybil Wilkes and J. Anthony Brown, along with his nationwide listening audience, who’d been texting their well-wishes for the family all morning.

“They did give my uncles a posthumous pardon,” Joyner said. “We’re getting ready to go now for the signing of the pardon letter.”

Joyner had been on a quest to clear his uncles’ names after learning of their story when Gates announced the results of genealogy research conducted on Joyner’s family as part of the 2008 PBS special, “African American Lives II.”

Joyner, with help from Gates and South Carolina attorney Stephen K. Benjamin, put together the case petitioning the state to exonerate his maternal great-uncles.

The brothers were executed with two other black men for the April 1913 shooting death of John Lewis, 73, a wealthy Confederate veteran living in a town 40 miles north of Columbia.

The Griffin brothers were indicted in July 1913 and given just two days to prepare the case. The family was forced to sell 130 acres of land to finance the defense. Their lawyer sought a delay but the request was denied, leaving just one day to get ready. Later, the state Supreme Court said the denial was insignificant to the outcome of the case.

The video clip below is poignant moment from the documentary where Dr. Gates stuns Joyner by telling him that his great-uncles were electrocuted by the State of South Carolina, for a murder they didn’t commit. Historically, of the 47 people who were put to death in South Carolina between 1912 and 1920, 44 were Black.

Albany Law School professor Dr. Paul Finkelman, who helped with the research on the case, says he’s never seen a case in which so many white public officials and sentences came forward to try to help black men who had been convicted.

“The Griffin brothers stand for the thousands of people who are unjustly accused, unjustly convicted,“ he said after the pardon was granted. “It’s not just Tom Joyner’s family. This is a much bigger story and there are other stories that need to be told.”
