OH HAI!

You know how you get when you’re, say, dying of consumption, and you’re on like 85 different pain / cold / fever medications and syrups and lozenges and expectorants and teas because this is your first winter back on the East Coast after living for ten years in the beautiful warm and sunny paradise of Hawaii so your first real winter cold feels like you are slowly being murdered or at the very least tortured in a very non-fun definitely non-sex way by le Marquis de Sade, and your head is so foggy and thick and muddled it feels not unlike it felt that last time you ever smoked up about three years ago and smoked “just a little bit too much” and you basically just sat in a catatonic state for hours while your BFF put together a Lego sculpture of the Millennium Falcon? Or something?

Anyway, this is how I feel right now, and this is also why I have not published anything here recently. (Also I am rather infuriated that my current illness prevented me from making it down to D.C. for the Inauguration tomorrow, as I had covertly planned, but whatever I suppose I was not meant to see “History” in “The Making”.) But I did want to pop in and promise that there is much to be reported from my corner of the internets, and that it will be in due time, and also to address two potentially important programming notes.

FeedBurner: FeedBurner accounts are allegedly, finally, being fully migrated to Google. I suppose if I had ever paid more attention to my FeedBurner account / activity / traffic, I would care more about transferring my FeedBurner account to Google, but since I never have, I am just saving myself and hopefully everyone else some grief by reverting to my automatic WordPress feed. So, if you’ve bookmarked or otherwise stored my FeedBurner feed, you should change it accordingly.

9rules: I am exceedingly pleased to proudly announce that Curious Affairs was accepted yesterday into the ranks of 9rules: The best content from the independent web, following the conclusion of their eighth round of submissions for membership. For those readers who’ve no idea what this means, I’ve begun a piece on said topic just this morning, but in the interim before that piece goes live I wanted to remark on the honor and to welcome any new readers who stumble upon Curious Affairs via 9rules. The entire announcement and list of other new members for Round 8 is located in The 9rules Blog.

So if you will please excuse me, I am off to make another cup of tea, blow my nose for the 82,783rd time this afternoon, and attempt to give my aching muscles a back rub by myself.

Send Valium! KAY THX BAI!

What is a Blog

Obviously a blog (a contraction of the term “Web log”) is just a Web site, usually maintained by an individual or network , with regular post of commentary, descriptions of events, or other media images or video. Most often than not a blog pertains to a specfic topic. eg: Nita writes on Issues in India, IndianHousemaker writes on everyday life, and Nikhil writes brilliant stories.

The First Blog

Someone, somewhere created the very first Web log. It’s just not quite clear who. But … Dave Winer says on scripting news “Who was The creator of the first blog. That would be Tim Berners-Lee, whose first website was, in every way, a blog” and Scripting news is the one who inspired them.

RSS Anyone

RSS was born in 1997 out of the confluence of Dave Winer’s ‘Really Simple Syndication’ technology, used to push out blog updates, and Netscape’s ‘Rich Site Summary’, which allowed users to create custom Netscape home pages with regularly updated data flows.” – Tim O’Reilly.

Technorati

Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs, competing with Google and Yahoo. As of Oct 2008, Technorati indexes 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media. The name Technorati is a blend, pointing to the technological version of literati or intellectuals. Technorati was founded by Dave Sifry and its headquarters are in San Francisco, California, USA. Tantek Çelik was the site’s Chief Technologist.

… hahaha, nah, I don’t hate, just dislike.

You see I am not only lazy, slack and carefree, but I am also stubborn. So when I look at something as common as Facebook, I think: ordinary, usual, common, not unusual, the norm etc etc… I’m a person (if you didn’t know already) who likes unique, different, unusual, not following the norm or un-ordinary, (If that’s even a word). I’m not having a go at FB as such, it’s just MySpace, Facebook & Friendster are sites that don’t really go down well with me. I find that people think I’m not there and don’t bother replying to comments, yet are able to with everyone else, and that whenever it is that I do join, no-one notices. This blog is public, so in a sense it’s like I’m telling the world this, but I don’t say that to be attention seeking, merely stating a reason why social networking sites aren’t my thing. Also, MySpace, Friendster & Facebook aren’t all that great looking in comparison to such social networking sites including VIRB, Trig, Purevolume, my.9rules, Pownce, Flickr, Threadless, Shelfari, Beautiful Society & HumbleVoice, I would personally, rather have my details, photos on those social networking sites. Yes, some of those social networking sites are specific on your interests, such as if you are into books, then Shelfari is probably best, if you’re into art (like me), graphic design, etc then HumbleVoice is probably best. If you want something quick then I guess Pownce, for photo specific, Flickr, if you’re into music, then Trig &/or Purevolume (though last.fm is also fantastic too). If you’re a designer yourself or want something that has design sense, then VIRB. Blog wise, beautiful society, or if you want to sell your own design on a shirt, then threadless (don’t quite understand this site, but it looks cool all the same).
Quite frankly, Facebook & especially MySpace don’t match up (design wise) to these sites in my personal opinion. I haven’t made an account on each and every one of them to give any more comment about them all any further. However there are some people who have commented saying that they like the look of Facebook/MySpace… but please, it’s not beautiful. It’s meant to look simple, but so is Flickr, and Flickr looks beautiful a n d simple.

Gah! Now it really sounds like I’m having a go at Facebook. Haha, ah well, this is what this personal blog is for afterall.
It also has to do with the fact that everyone is different and I like to blog, and WordPress is AWESOME to blog with. I love the design, features, blog skins and how nice it is to use. In a social networking site, you have a photo album, most likely a blog section, some even have email services (O.o), contacts, personal info, etc etc. That’s all well and good, however I don’t like organising photos into albums. I love to just chuck them all into my blog. For me it’s more interactive that way, and how my thought process is expressed out. Just who I am I guess. Also if I had friends who blog (they don’t however, which is a shame), I’d rather to see comments to a blog than on my profile page.

Bottom line: this is about me and what I like, my preference to how I spend my time on the Internet, I do not deny that (this is my blog however where I can freely express my thoughts however). I don’t like Facebook on the basis of how it looks. I don’t like Facebook because it is not unique and is common or “the norm,” because I prefer to not be common or usual (?). If I see other sites there out there that basically do the same thing, I’d rather use them or it. I prefer to blog. And of course, because none of my friends really noticed me on those sites.

I guess the whole, my-friends-never-noticed-me bit has a lot to do with me (me, me, me… gah! >_<”). I didn’t really make my presence known, however when I did, and a few of my friends DID know about my presence, they still forgot or didn’t bother. I don’t like rejection or ignorance, and I’m somewhat of a hypocrit about that, but to be fair, every individial is a hypocrit in regards to rejection and ignorance. So if I am asked to join something like a social networking site, having not been keen in the first place, but thought it’d be fun, however to not be noticed… no-one likes that feeling. However I don’t like attention. I like appreciation and acknowledgement. There is a difference between attention and appreciation/acknowledgement. They have in common the letter ‘a’, but that is all. Also, simple things like that add and make you wonder, who are your real friends, and what they really think of you as opposed to others. I am me, and that is all. I have tried changing, and makes things worse. I can only be me (whoever that is, I haven’t actually figured that out fully yet to be honest), so if “friends” do not like who I am then, ok. I would like to be told in a mature manner, but that is life and people.

Just on this whole ranting thing, I have noticed my attitude shifts a lot frequently. There are times in the day where I will not and do not give a fuck about anyone or myself, how I look, behave, or how I talk to others. There are others times in that same day where I will make sure I have a good and positive, cheery, happy attitude towards others and myself. Then I come home, turn the music up and I guess that’s the only time where I feel I really am myself. In that time, I do care about others and myself, I have a good attitude, or acceptable attitude if good is too general, and I just enjoy my time on the PC, or drawing/painting.

A N Y W A Y S ~ !

Onto something exciting (personally)… I found out that boring ol’ Perth sells Holga cameras!!! ^o^ I’M SO HAPPY!!! It’s been a good day today. I met up with Mandy today to spend the afternoon in the city, and it was fun just chatting, laughing and catching up as we bummed around the city. Met up with Rammond and his friends, saw AWESOME interactive dancing at the arcade (those guys, and girl have fucking brilliant skill… should be made into a sport xD… no, seriously) and of course,, HOLGA CAMERAS! I thought I had to save up big time to buy one of them babies online, but no, Perth sells them. Lots of them too! ^_^ I wish I had found that store a week ago, because I would’ve quite happily spent my money on one of them instead of the digital camera that I have now. I did say to mum that I regretted buying my digital camera, but I take that back. I don’t regret it, it’s just if I could reverse time with the knowledge of that store, I would’ve spent the money on the Holga camera. It’s 100$ cheaper, and so not only would I have had an awesome camera, but I would have also saved 100$ too. T^T No matter, I’ll just save up. I can actually buy a pinhole camera tomorrow as it’s 85$ and I have 100$ atm, but I want to be patient and not be greedy… if it is greedy at all, I duno. I’d rather wait one more week so I can get a set that includes everything, for about 80$ more. We’ll see how long my patience can hold up

Here are some piccies of what they look like if you’re not sure what the hell I’m on about. ^-^ Ah just looking at them makes me want them more and more. Y.Y

There are more images of them and accessories if you go the website.

Anyways, I’m off to level up my new assassin. Her name is Taka (after Taka from The Last Samurai, I find it to be a beautiful name, though I don’t know the meaning behind it) Ohgo (some random Japanese last name I found from some actor. I like the sound of it, and it kind of fitted, so what the hell, had to pick something). I don’t normally do this, though I should, but here’s a screenshot of her. Her armor isn’t that great at the moment, she’s only about a day old and only just got to Kaineng and about to go to GW:EN, so yeah, she doesn’t have access to great armor atm. Y.Y

Yeah, she’s still in the beginning stages as you can see xD She’ll get there eventually… Asuran armor ftw! (First armor set that I’m going for ;])

Anywho, I’m going to go play her… that sounded perverted and wrong, no pun intended, honest ><

This WordPress template has been very good to me, very good. Especially when it come to the sideboard. A clean, simple, economical sideboard without a lot of “stuff”. So it was a great move for me to get on WordPress.

When I did make this move I made a concerned effort that I would not have all those junk widgets on the sideboard, and there was a lot of junk on those sideboards.

Which brings me to the whole point of this post.

I’ve added another widget, and it’s not just any old widget. It’s a 9rules widget.

Rather than me try to poorly explain what 9rules is/does/stands for how about I just link you to a couple of pages over there and you can see for yourself what the gang at 9rules is trying to accomplish.

I just want to say; in the most simple way, that 9rules is a community that you have to earn your way onto by writing a blog that has good content. Those are my words, as I best understand it.

For and old guy like me to be accepted; well heck, I am pleased that those youngsters think I am providing good content on this here blog, coming to you through these internet tubes. I had kind of figured that I was on the right track based on the e-mail coming my way from readers of this blog.

This recognition is kind of neat and I hope I can continue to provide a place to educate, entertain and or amuse you for a few minutes of your day.

Okay, enough back-slapping.

The one thing I am not sure about is what community this blog should be listed on. I have looked around over there and just can’t figure it out. As far as I can tell I am breaking some new ground with a blog about Landscape Design from a professionals point of view.

I really do not think it is design because the list of design blogs mainly deals with internet/website issues.

If you are a 9rules member and are stopping by to check out this site I’d appreciate any feedback on where you think I should be listed.

Thanks again to the 9rules gang, especially Tyme(thanks) I look forward to being part of the 9rules.

If you’re not a member check out the site, go to the community listing and check out your favorite subject, there are some great writers over there(and now me) with really great info.

Now concerning widgets, I hope I am done but I’ve learned to never say never!

I’m proud to announce that EducateDeviate has been accepted into the latest round of 9rules, a well-known and well-respected blog network that features content from all areas and aspects of life.

I’m particularly stoked about being in 9rules as it’s highly sought after and it has strong community aspects. I’m interested in meeting up with other 9rules bloggers, particularly education bloggers, and see how we can work together to develop greater content. I’m also interested in getting assistance in developing EducateDeviate further, from just being a blog to being a full-fledged resource centre.

Another homeschooling/alternative education blog, Just Enough, was also accepted into this round of 9rules. I found her through looking at the accepted websites list and it’s great to have more blogs like ours around – they’re hard to find as it is! The Education community on 9rules is rather sparse at the moment, but hopefully myself and Just Enough will be able to fill it out a bit.

Huzzah! Thank you Scriv, Mike, and Tyme!

When publishers ask me for a great example of a community site built with WordPress, I always mention 9rules.com, a site where you can “Share. Learn. Discover” :

Built with WordPress and seamlessly integrated with our discussion forum software bbPress the site includes member profiles, streams, private messages, twitter and flickr integration, and much more.

As 9rules wrote on their blog a few months ago:

When it comes to coding up this site we have three options:

 1. Do it ourselves.
2. Put a blindfold over Tyme’s eyes and four keyboards and hope that after a week of solitude she pushed out something cool.
3. Get someone else to do it.

We went with 1 and 3, but not in the way you might be thinking. The core of 9rules is powered by WordPress, bbPress and simplepie. Now you can’t get both of those packages, install them and all of a sudden have another 9rules. We customized them a ton to fit our needs, but without them as the foundation we wouldn’t be close to where we are now.

I love Chanel’s classic 2.55 bag in almost all its incarnations, and marvel at how they keep coming up with fresh ideas for the very iconic bag. When Chanel released the Ice Cube line, I was on the fence, particularly on the 2.55 flap. The handbag is made by attaching vinyl cubes onto metallic lambskin, thereby resembling the quilting of classic Chanels. It’s a fun, modern and daring take on a beloved design. And at $1,650, it is relatively affordable for Chanel. After seeing Paris Hilton toting the bag at a Miami party, I’ve made up my mind about this 2.55. As a general rule of thumb for me, anything on Paris is not for me. If this bag floats your boat, call your local Chanel boutique for more info.

Vonage has reached an “agreement in principle” to settle its intellectual property dispute with AT&T, the VoIP pioneer announced yesterday.

The deal under discussion would have Vonage pay $39 million over five years, in exchange for AT&T dropping its patent infringement lawsuit. Vonage would also agree to drop its counter suit against the telecom giant.

“We’re moving in the right direction with regard to AT&T and are focused on finalizing our agreement by the end of this month,” said Charles Sahner, a spokesman for Vonage. “We would like to be able to put AT&T behind us together with Verizon, Sprint and our other recent settlements.”

Vonage’s new strategy of settling patent infringement complaints has been a convenient and effective way of avoiding crippling injunctions against its technology, but it has also been very costly, cutting into the unprofitable company’s ever-dwindling supply of cash.

“The company’s cash requirements in the fourth quarter increased due to the release of $78 million of restricted cash to Verizon, an additional $2 million to Verizon, $40 million placed into escrow and reported as current restricted cash until the Verizon appeal is decided, $80 million to Sprint and $2 million in other IP litigation settlements,” the company said in its most recent financial statement.

Fui preencher o cadastro no 9rules.

I’m a bit behind on posting about this, but late is better than never. The 9Rules team has released an all new 9Rules, codenamed Ali. The front page of the site is totally changed, and some new areas have been added as well. The most prominent addition (I think) is My 9Rules, “where readers can create a profile and customize their profile to include the content that most interests them. They can add friends, create favorites, and distribute points for content they enjoyed. They can also add their flickr and del.ic.ious content.” (From here.) I highly recommend you check it out; the new 9Rules really is a big advancement. Also, if you create a profile at My 9Rules, feel free to add me to your friends list; I’m not hard to find.

I’m not enjoying what I’m going through lately. In a sentence, I don’t know what to write about. A few months ago, I was able to write a blog entry a day – sometimes two – without running out of writing juice. Lately, however, I’ve been struggling to get out one entry every three or four days. It’s not that I’ve lost interest in my blog – not at all – it’s just that when I sit down to write, I come up with nothing. In a way, I think I’m fighting a bit of blog stage fright. I’ve noted that this inability to write started right around the time I was accepted into 9Rules. I think that subconsciously, I know far more people are hitting my site now, and in turn, I’m more than a bit nervous about what to write. I’m suffering the age old problem of, “What if they don’t like what I write? What could I write about that they’d like?” Scrivs touched on this very problem on the 9Rules blog recently. Here’s a snippet from his post:

The ironic thing is you built your audience by writing what you wanted to write so in theory they should have no problem with the stuff you write, but yet I know some of us still fall into the trap of wondering if they will like what we put out or not.

That is indeed rather ironic. I built up a small audience for my blog by writing about what interested me; I was even accepted into the awesome blog network, 9Rules, based on what I was writing. Now that I have a decent little audience, I’ve crawled into my hole, worrying whether or not what I’m writing on my blog is interesting or not. That’s not only ironic, that’s just dumb. Furthermore, while I doubt I’m ever going to be a wonderful novelist or anything like that, one reason I started System 13 was to try and improve my writing ability. It’s rather difficult to improve one’s writing ability when you’ve stopped writing, isn’t it?

Now that I’ve sat down and wrote this out (both for the site and for me, truth be told), I know the answer, and what a simple answer it is: just write. Quit worrying so much and just write something – anything. The rest will follow. I need to look back through my archives and see what it was that was inspiring me to write when I started: books, sci-fi, history. Cliché or not, I need to get back to my blog ‘roots.’

One of the cool things about this site is that it’s readers are doing so many interesting things.

We have watched, in real time, the inexplicable success of BizNicheMedia and 9rules. The rise of poet Robert Bruce. We’ve watched David Krug and PopCrunch survive despite my bashing and Meme continue to thrive despite a trainwreck of an interview with me.

The Level9 Media Group continues to launch sites despite a small dust up with Matt from the Blog Herald. And look at the Blog Herald. Despite a shaky start it still thrives under BlogMedia. And Duncan Riley survives too despite the censorship we put him through at The Blogging Times.

People here don’t just talk. They do.

My friend Brian Clark started his blog the same time I did. Unlike mine, his became wildly popular and hovers in the Technorati top 1000. That wasn’t enough though. He just launched Tubetorial. What it does is teach you how to make more money online. The sweet part is that it’s in a screencast/video format so you can’t screw up. That’s hot.

Adam Kalsey and I kept missing each other when I was in San Francisco. He recently introduced Feed Crier. In case you haven’t heard, it’s a feed reader but is delivered via IM. Wwwaaayyy cool idea. It’s something we regular folks understand. And getting the info you want instantly with a tool we get is hot.

Financial Guru Bill Cara mentions some financial shows you can watch via the internet. It seems the money boys love that stuff. Anyway, one of the shows he mentions is Wall Strip which is being produced by my friend (and partner) Howard Lindzon. The show doesn’t go into production till later this month but since I have some inside info on it I can say this. It’s gonna be hot.

There’s a lot of other stuff going on I’m not even supposed to mention, but fuck that.

Oh Word, the music/hipster site, has a project in the works to give regular folks the chance to get their hands on some music schwag. LifeLock is going to be working with folks who have social networking pages. Liz Strauss has a super secret super cool thing she’s working on. Noah Brier and Julie Levine are working on something to change the advertising industry. My brother is starting a different kind of video NFL show and I got this chick in South Africa who’s going to be bringing a video perspective to my Angelina Jolie site.

Angelina Jolie.

Now that’s hot…
