The Cavs are the best team in the NBA because they have by far the most fun. Without Lebron, I’d say the Cavs have at least 20 less wins on the season. But it’s not just his fun-loving attitude that helps him lift his team, but the fact that his supporting cast of characters has genuinely bought in to the mentality.

Case in point: Daniel “Boobie” Gibson. At 23 years old and in his 4th NBA season, Gibson is making $4 million a year and averaging 6.8 points per game and shooting a league leading 47.8% from 3-point range. He is a significant contributor off the bench for the 41-11 Cavs who currently hold the best record in the NBA.

He is not the best player on his team. He does not garner the headlines, the pressure or the responsibility that a Lebron James or Kobe Bryant does. He probably won’t dunk on Dwight Howard. He probably won’t score more than 30 points in a game all season. He probably won’t get the million-dollar sponsorships or his own basketball shoe from Nike or Jordan.

But what he does provide is an offensive spark off the bench. He provides the Cavaliers with the most efficient three-point shooter in the NBA. The kid drops buckets from three like Fabolous drops similes on a track. Every championship team needs a player like Boobie: Jordan had Steve Kerr. Kobe and Shaq had Derek Fisher. Tim Duncan (along with Hakeem, Shaq, Kobe, etc.) had Robert Horry.

Gibson is that piece to the championship puzzle for the Cavs. He plays loose, he plays within himself and he embraces his role better than anyone in the NBA.

Below is what I believe (if not hope) a day in the life of Boobie Gibson is like on gameday, and why his life is to be admired by any couch-loving, laid back sports fan.

8:00am: Wake up to “Turn My Swag On” by Soulja Boy on his iHome. Fiancé and R&B diva Keyshia Cole rolls over and smacks the iPod off the night table to stop the music.

8:30am: Makes breakfast, which could be anything from assorted omelets to pancakes to Cookie Crisp or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Turns on Sportsenter and watches highlights of himself drop 16 points against the Grizzlies in a 105-89 victory.

8:45: Checks his MySpace and Twitter and updates both with inspiring quotes for the day.

9:30am: Departs from his million-dollar downtown Cleveland condo and heads 11 miles down the road to Independence, Ohio where the Cavaliers practice facility is located. Boobie’s iPod plays “Fresh Azamiz” among other songs.

9:45 am: Morning shoot around starts at 11am everyday, but Lebron holds mandatory meetings an hour early on each game day with himself, Mo Williams, Boobie and Delonte West to practice their celebration routines. This includes their famous “Photo Shoot” skit they perform just before tip-off, but also the hour is used to perfect the precision and speed with which they execute their handshakes. Tonight’s game is on TNT so Lebron called the meeting 15 minutes earlier.

11:00am: Morning shoot-around begins at the Cavaliers’ brand new, $27 million, 50,000 square foot practice facility. Even Allen Iverson can’t complain about practice in a building like that.

11:15am: Boobie shoots 50-100 threes. He makes about 80% of them.

12:00pm: Lebron, Boobie and Mo Williams bet $1000 each on a half court-shooting contest. Lebron wins.

12:15pm: Team film session.

1:00pm: Lunch at Lebron’s mansion. Lebron’s cooks make an assortment of gameday food. Pasta, chicken, vegetables and some energy filled deserts.

1:30pm: NBA 2k10 tournament on Xbox360 on the 85” ultra high-definition projection TV in Lebron’s newly finished basement. While they play, Mo Williams Googles ideas for a new design that Boobie should get shaved into his hair.

Boobie plays with the Blazers because he likes to play with LaMarcus Aldridge, his old Texas Longhorn teammate. Boobie wins back the $1000 he lost in the shooting contest.

2:00pm: Leaves Lebron’s and heads back to his home downtown. Takes a quick nap with Sportscenter still on in the background.

3:00pm: Boobie heads to the Major League barber shop to get a new design shaved into his head. Because he’s already used up the star with #1 in it and the Superman logo with a “B” replacing the “S”, Boobie chooses a unique design inspired by Knicks legend Anthony Mason.

4:00pm: Heads to Quicken Loans Arena for the Cavs’ 7:30 game in his black Hummer H2. “Turn my Swag On” plays.

5:00pm: Pre-game preparations begin. Boobie challenges rookie Danny Green to a game of NBA 2k10. Keyshia brings homemade lasagna for Boobie’s pregame meal.

7:30: Gametime.

7:41: Boobie gets on the court for the first time. Boobie fights to get open as he watches arguably the greatest physical specimen and athlete professional sports have ever seen and waits for a kickout to knock down one of many threes he will hit all season.

11:00pm: After another Cavs win, Boobie, Lebron and Mo Williams head to a club in downtown Cleveland with Jay-Z, Chris Brown, Usher and Keyshia.

1:37am: Home in bed. Just in time for the 2am live Sportscenter.

Day in Review: “I’m 23 years old. I got a million dollar smile. I made $49,859 tonight for shooting 3-for-6 from three and dropping 15 points. I played video games in Lebron’s basement. I’m engaged to R&B singer Keyshia Cole. I chilled in the club with Jay-Z—but I worked my ass off to get here. What else can I ask for?”

Moving away from Cleveland has made me more of a frustrated Cavaliers fan than—oh wait—my bad:

Do I have your attention now?

These names as well as their teams entrance the national sports media when they’re talking basketball—no matter if they’re actually doing well or even playing—so I thought I’d employ them when trying to write a successful basketball post.

My beloved Cavaliers hold *the best* record in the league, currently with 39 wins and 11 losses.  We swept the `~*Los Angeles Lakers`~* during the regular season, we persevere even when some of our best ballers are injured, and we’ve had pretty much the same amount of winning stretches this season as . . . gee, when was it?  Oh yeah—last season, when we also led the league going into playoffs.

*KOW* (As I mentioned in a previous Cavs post, knocking on wood is essential when talking Cleveland sports.)

So, why isn’t anyone talking about it?

It’s not that I’m missing all these pieces because I moved to Atlanta, Ga., and then to Harrisonburg, Va., and we don’t get to see them play as much.  Because we don’t even get the credit we deserve when they broadcast us nationally—and they only do that when we battle `~*Kobe Bryant `~* Rondo `~* KG `~* Paul Pierce`~*.  Even when we’re winning.

If we’re killing `~*Bryant’s Lakers,`~* it’s because `~*the Lakers`~* are doing something wrong.  At halftime, the ever-articulate Charles Barkley explains what `~*the Lakers`~* have to do in order to pull this thing out and take the lead.

In fact, I believe ESPN has only recently begun to acknowledge the awesome that is LeBron James because they believe he will employ a completely sensible career strategy and destroy everything he’s built in Cleveland.

Yes, once his contract is up at the end of the season, all the experts (and when I say experts, I am likening them to Apple Store geniuses and Best Buy’s Geek Squad) predict James will jet off to New York so he can start from ground zero (no pun intended, and I just realized it would have been an *awful* one had it been intended) and play for a team that’s easily as bad as the Cavs were pre-Bron-Bron: the New York Knicks.

In their eyes, he harbors a secret disdain for Cleveland, just like they all do, which makes him A-OK in their books.

All this because he wore a frakkin’ Yankees hat a couple of times.

It sickens me to even post this.

I’m sorry.  Have you drifted off again?

Last week’s news of the All-Star team ignited my inner Clevelander.  Allen Iverson?  Al Horford?  Are you frickin’ kidding me with this?  One player from the team with the best record . . . three players and two players from teams ranked fifth and sixth in the league (`~*the Celtics`~*and the Hawks, respectively).  That makes sense.

I mean, I know the starters are decided by fans, but the supporting cast isn’t.  They’ve even brainwashed the coaches.

As well, Cavs shooting guard Anthony Parker (who?) and point guard Daniel “Boobie” Gibson (who?) have two of the highest 3-point percentages in the league—Gibson even held *the* highest percentage for a while this season.  (I’m sorry—is he a real person??)  However, while the announcement for the All-Star weekend’s 3-point Shootout competition is forthcoming this week, no one expects either of these poor schlubs to be included.

Before they were teammates. Wait - am I supposed to know either of these guys?

MY POINT

No one respects the Cavaliers—pretty much no matter what.  We can have the best player in the league endorse us, stick with us, lead us to greatness; we can have superstars join us and lead us to even higher levels of awesome; we can consistently kick ass; but we’ve never won a championship.

Not. Even. Then.

And, ya know?  I’m not even sure that will do it.  It’s what every Clevelander wants; but in the end, we’re so used to sports despair and getting snubbed, we approach our enthusiasm with extreme caution.

ESPN’s Bill Simmons discusses fan anguish and the levels of losing in his “Consider These Teams Officially Tortured,” and he zeroes in on my feelings and the feelings of ever other Cleveland fan:

“Just writing about this makes me uneasy.“

And the national sports media can suck it.

Since drafting him out of NC State a couple years back, expectations for Cavaliers forward JJ Hickson have been high. Hickson has had some bumps in the road over the years but played like the player the Cavaliers had been hoping for against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday evening.

Hickson finished the night with 23 points as the Cavaliers rolled to a 109-95 victory over the Timberwolves at Quicken Loans Arena.  It was the Cavaliers sixth straight win in a row.

Overall, the Cavaliers starting lineup and bench played well against the struggling Timberwolves. Lebron James finished with 12 points, Shaquille O’Neal with 13 points and Daniel “Boobie” Gibson finsihed the evening with 13 points to his name. Off the bench, Jamario Moon finished with 14 points while teammate Zydrunas Illgauskus finished the night with 13 points.

The Cavaliers were without Mo Williams and Delonte West, who are both out with injuries but showed their depth in this ball game. Gibson has played well ever since being inserted into the starting lineup and Jamario Moon has picked up the scoring touch when needed. Even with key players out, the Cavaliers are proving to be one of the NBA’s top teams.

It was recently announced that the Cleveland Cavaliers point guard, Mo Williams, will be out for 4-6 week with a shoulder sprain.  Williams was LeBron James’ only reliable sidekick, so now that he’s out, the Cavs must get LeBron some help via trade.  We all know that LeBron’s contract expires after this season, and if Cleveland’s front office won’t help him out, he’ll go somewhere with a GM that will surround him with better talent.  I’ve come up with a way for the Cavaliers to get F/C Chris Bosh, F/C Amar’e Stoudemire, and a PG, Ramon Sessions, who can run the team while Mo Williams is out.

How to get Stoudemire: Trade Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ expiring contract and Anthony Parker to the Suns for Amar’e

Why the Suns would agree: They get Parker, a lethal three point shooter, who will fit in well with Steve Nash.  Stoudemire was going to leave anyway in free agency, so any sort of return they get on him would be a plus.

How to get Bosh: Trade Shaquille O’Neal and Jawad Williams (both expiring contracts to the Raptors for backup PG Marcus Banks and Bosh.

Why the Raptors would agree: From a purely financial standpoint, the Raptors would gain even more cap room to try to entice a big name free agent this offseason.  They were going to lose Bosh anyway, so getting rid of Marcus Banks’ $4 million dollar salary might be enough for them to pull the trigger on this deal.

How to get Sessions: Trade backup PG Daniel Gibson for Sessions and backup G Wayne Ellington

Why the Timberwolves would agree: Gibson can play SG as well as PG, so he will fit in better with the T-Wolves’ young PG Jonny Flynn.  As an extra incentive, the Cavs could throw in a second round pick for Minnesota as well.

These trades all work in terms of matching salaries.  I plugged it into ESPN’s trade machine and they don’t violate any NBA rules.  Although these trades will never happen in real life, which starting five do you think Cleveland fans would rather have?

Team 1:  LeBron, Anthony Parker, Delonte West, Shaq, JJ Hickson  Bench:  Ilgauskas, Gibson

Team 2:  LeBron, Sessions, West, Bosh, Stoudemire  Bench:  Anderson Varejao, Jamario Moon

The answer is pretty obvious to me.  Team 2 is the only team that will be able to beat out Boston, Orlando, and even Atlanta in the Eastern Conference.  Cleveland should do something or else risk losing the best player in the NBA.

It’s official! Keyshia Cole is expecting her first child and is engaged to Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player, Daniel “Boobie” Gibson.

A representative for Keyshia Cole confirms to US Weekly that the two are preparing to tie the knot.

“I can confirm she is engaged and has an incredible ring,” her rep tells Us.

According to the rep, Gibson proposed on New Year’s Eve, adding that it was “an absolute surprise. When he asked her to marry him, she was flabbergasted. He presented her with the ring and her mouth dropped in amazement. It’s too beautiful for words.”

No, not the most fitting outfit, but Miss Keyshia Cole and her growing belly, managed to look cute anyhow… kinda. 

The singer was spotted at Acts Full Gospel Church in her hometown of East Oakland, providing gifts for less fortunate Foster kids. Keyshia is due to give birth to her first child in March next year, and is said to be very happy with her boo thang Daniel Gibson.

Cavaliers: 98  Pistons: 88

There’s a reason people have dubbed the Cavs the “Cleveland LeBrons.” If you don’t see why, tonight’s game provided 34 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists worth of evidence as to why this guy turns a non-playoff team into a Finals contender every year. As much as I complain about any star treatment by NBA officials, this guy is one of the best basketball players on the planet. He’s the reason why the Cavs were running away with this game in the second and third quarters. Once again, the Pistons put up a good fight late in the game, but the Shaq-less Cavs (and mostly LeBron) were too strong in the end.

The Cavs started off hot, and as I noted on Twitter, were shooting 67% for the game at one point in the 2nd quarter. Just as I pleaded, the Pistons tightened up their defense. Cleveland put up 60 points in the first half but were held to 38 in the second half. The heightened defensive intensity helped the Pistons get back into the game in the 4th quarter.

However, the Pistons were unable to hit shots (39% shooting on the night) and weren’t able to come all the way back to beat the Cavs. Outside of Rodney Stuckey (25 points on 16 shots) and Charlie Villanueva (19 on 15 shots, 8 rebounds), the Pistons didn’t have a consistent offensive threat on the floor. Jason Maxiell (10 points on 3-5 shooting) was the only other Piston in double figures.

Random notes:

Overall, this loss was disappointing, but without Ben Gordon, the Pistons are missing their three best players. Unlike the other injury-depleted professional team in Detroit, the Pistons aren’t deep enough to compete with the top teams in the NBA without Gordon, Rip Hamilton, and Tayshaun Prince.

The Pistons are back in action on Friday night against the Los Angeles Clippers. Hopefully they’ll be able to end their slide at 6 games and get back on track.

Keyshia Cole was spotted in Cleveland with her boyfriend Cleveland Cavalier Daniel “Boobie” Gibson for a charity event. She was spotted rocking a baby bump and according to sources, she was unmistakably about 7 months pregnant. Keyshia denied pregnancy rumors back in September.

Keyshia and her boyfriend were at Bethany Baptist Church to give out a bag of groceries and turkeys to those less fortunate. Keyshia has been MIA lately and now we see why.  Congrats to them, we can’t wait to see what the baby looks like.

And that was prior to me seeing her myself.

The 2009-2010 season has been one of immense scoring, and tremendous excitement.

1. Boston Celtics: I am no fool. The Celtics are legit, at this point in time the C’s are  the best team in the league. Their offense is clicking, Rasheed Wallace looks more like a contestant for the All Star Weekend NBA 3 Point Contest, rather than the Sixth Man of the Year. Rondo got his extension, a safe move to protect young talent on an aging team. Things are working out in Boston, and as of week one, no team can touch them.

2. Orlando Magic: Just ask The Octagon, the Magic are very potent. The depth of this Magic Team is simply incredible. Their scoring recalls the glory days of the Phoenix Suns under Mike D’Antoni. Just think with J.J. (Get me a record deal!) Reddick scoring 27 points in the absence of Vince Carter, as well as Rashard Lewis’ suspension and Pietrus’ injury the Orlando Magic offense firing on all cylinders is truly scary.

3. Los Angeles Lakers: I can’t bring myself to rank the Lakers any lower than third, they are: 1. still the best team substantially in the Western Conference 2. temporarily lacking the frontcourt depth that Pau Gasol brings and 3. they are the Los Angeles Lakers, the same Lakers that have won 15 NBA titles, brought in guys like Gasol and Ron Artest, and will continue to do anything to win Kobe another ring.

4. Denver Nuggets: While predicting the Western Conference standings at the end of the season, I wasn’t too big on the Nuggets. Sure they have guys like Chauncey Billups, J.R. Smith and the Birdman, and I thought their trip to the Western Conference Finals was a fluke. Then I remembered that they had Carmelo Anthony. 113 points in 117 minutes played. That alone earns them the 4 position.

5. San Antonio Spurs: Although disappointed with the loss in Chicago, I’m still big on the Spurs. Antonio McDyess is a great addition off the bench. DeJuan Blair, is making every GM in the league regret not taking him, even though I believed his talent was on par with a first round pick. 6. Cleveland Cavaliers: Ah, there they are. Forget the 0-2 start, the Cavaliers are looking better. The return of Delonte West was hailed in Cleveland, as he locked in 13 points and two assists. Mo Williams, who has also stepped up his game in the last two victories, and Daniel Gibson looks like he has his three point shot back, for now. Also, there is a real possibility that LeBron could average a triple double for the season, woah.

7. Dallas Mavericks: Dirk’s on usual pace, Terry’s looking like his sixth man self, and Marion is contributing with points and rebounds. Despite the Mavs’ opening loss, the team has turned itself around. Howard has been looking like the Josh Howard of old, and the Mavericks can be a real prescence in the West.

8. Phoenix Suns: I’ll give it to the Phoenix Suns, an undefeated record combined with Grant Hill’s efforts and Channing Frye’s resurgance, the Suns look alright. Amare has not looked like himself, despite putting up average numbers. How long can this streak last? a five game road trip against Eastern Conference teams should dictate that.

9. Miami Heat: Am I really that impressed by the Heat? No. But I cannot argue a 14.3 ppg difference in wins for their first three games. I can’t put my faith in Jermaine O’Neal, i simply just can’t. Michael Beasley should improve as a sophomore but with OJ Mayo scoring 40 points now this early in the season for Memphis, I question the Heat’s draft pick. If Dwayne Wade does not believe in this team, he could be gone by next season.

10. Atlanta Hawks: I feel that the Hawks have not improved substantially from last year. As Joe Johnson recently said coming off a loss to the Lakers “were too soft.” Josh Smith, progressing in terms of his blocks, has not even attempted a three pointer this season. I simply believe the Hawks are playing about to their potential in terms of their talent base.

Look at Z play smothering defense. Rumor has it he wrestled alligators dipped in babyoil this offseason to help with his on ball defense.

Daniel Gibson is very lucky for a few reasons. One, that Lebron James likes him so much. That alone got him drastically overpaid a few years back. Secondly for his barber. My dude be getting some crop circle type shit in his hair. That takes a steady hand.

Shaq and Z on the floor isn’t the best combination. They’re too slow to rotate on defense. The size is nice, but I don’t think there’s 2 slow players on any team in the league that would make it functional defensively. I would like to see a reality show starring shaq and Z being best friends and kicking it like ballers. Z would pull mad hoes.

I really like Jamario Moon already. There was an article i read that was talking how he went undrafted, and his love of basketball kept him playing all those years before he got signed by Toronto. Apparently he was scheduled to come for a tryout for CLE after the one in Toronto but they signed him up back then.

But that hunger, my dude was willing to play basketball for free just for the sake of still playing basketball. He was like that baby armed dude that goes to the park every day in the summer just to play.

I saw Mike Brown at the Target in Avon once. He was buying his son a hot dog from the concessions inside Target. That pretty much worried me. I like to save a buck or two as well, but take the kid to 5 guys and fries and get some good shit Coach Brown, that’s what we pay you for. Goddamn the wire is great. Wallace is frustrated with his younger sister not being able to do a math word problem:

He tells her to do it in her head, she guesses 7 and 8. In the meantime, wallace is ducking going to work in the pit, the ghetto where he normally sells drugs.

Since his sister can’t figure it out, he says ‘close your eyes’ and reexplains the problem as:

You working ground stash, 20 tall pinks, 2 fiends come up get 2 each, another cops 3, bodie hands you off 10 more, white dude pulls up in a car and grabs 8. how many vials you got left?

She answers 15. He says how the fuck can you keep the count right but can’t do the book problem? She responds ‘count be wrong they’ll fuck you up.’
