This past Saturday was my 17th wedding anniversary – did you know that the 17th anniversary is the turquoise anniversary?  Me neither.  I decided to forgo all kinds of turquoise items and instead continue the gastronomic gluttony of Thanksgiving.  After all, nothing screams romance like indigestion.  My dearest hubby planned our morning and early afternoon adventures and I was in charge of dinner.  Let me share a few high points with you.

We started by meeting Portland Walking Tour’s Nan at the Heathman Hotel for the Epicurean Excursion through the Pearl District of Portland.  This is a wonderful experience, regardless of how much of a “foodie” you may or may not think of yourself.  For this self-diagnosed food-fanatic, it was marvelous.  Here’s some highlights.

Our first stop was for a taste of  the famous Tomato Orange Bisque from Elephant’s Delicatessen.  As much as I would love each and every one of you to go down and buy huge vats of that soup, here’s the recipe for those too far away to enjoy it.  In a word, this is amazing soup.  It also was the first taste of tomato soup my tomato hating husband has had in over 35 years!  This is a man who gags at the sight of a tomato, so the fact that he liked it,  speaks volumes.

Then, we headed off to Portland’s oldest craft brewery – BridgePort Brewing Company.  Nan left us in the Brewmaster Todd’s capable hands and we toured the brewery.  Whew!  There is a whole lotta science to making, er crafting, a good beer.  We tasted the various roasted grains, smelled hops, and tasted beers.  To continue the Elephant’s experience, it was the first time I managed to swallow much of a beer without gagging.  I also learned that beer, much like wine, is affected by its pairing with food (I guess that is a “well, duh!” statement!) greatly impacts the flavor of beer.  Who knows, you may someday see me downing a beer with a burger.  However, for those of you who consider yourself firmly in the beer drinking camp, I could suggest that you pick up some BridgePort beer.  Each and every Bridgeport beer is bottled right here in Portland – whoo-hoo.  AND, Todd showed us their garbage dumpster.  They have one of those small (think office sized) dumpster that each and every piece of garbage from the brewery and the entire restaurant/bakery goes into.  It goes to the landfill twice a week.  Talk about a great recycling and composting program.  If you are of the mind to support local businesses who are green, BridgePort is the brewery for you.

We also headed into the back area of the Pearl Bakery for a private taste-testing of several of their signature breads and pastries.  If you’ve never been to the Pearl, you are so missing out.  This is good bread that is made in the European way.  In other words, it’s about as far from Wonderbread as you can get.  Not that there is anything wrong with Wonderbread, if that’s what you like, mind you.

It was a difficult choice, but the gibassier beat out the croissant and the baguette for top gastronomic marks for this girl.  Gather up a few friends, head down to the Pearl Bakery and create your own taste test – let me know what you loved!  Of course, you may find you share my struggle – choices, choices, choices.  Sometimes, you just have to call it a tie.

Nan also took us to In Good Taste for a mustard and wine tasting.  Let me just sum up that stop with this:  try it, you’ll like it!  Here’s a few pics.

In addition to mustards, In Good Taste has a fantastic selection of salts and spices – many of which I had never heard of before.  There is also a great selection of cook books and knives.  I am hoping to take a cooking class here in my near future – the layout of the space is great and they have many fabulous (and famous, holy cow!) chefs come in.

A distinct focus of the Epicurean Excursion is something called FLOSS – fresh, local, organic, sustainable, seasonable.  When you eat at venues which embrace the FLOSS approach, your palette really benefits, not to mention how such practices affect the local community.One of the FLOSS restaurants we stopped at is Portland’s own Hot Lips Pizza.  Hubby and I have been there before, but we just thought the pizza was great – we didn’t realize how amazing the company is as well.  Nan brought us out a glass of Hot Lips’ site-made fruit pop made with local berries (very yummy!) and a slice of the day’s special.  Let’s just say we had happy tummies.

All too soon, and after several other stops, our tour came to an end.  If you have a chance to try the Epicurean Excursion through Portland Walking Tours, I recommend it.  And Nan, you were fantastic!

I decided that a Spanish Coffee from Huber’s (Portland’s oldest restaurant) was called for as we walked to our dinner destination.  If you’ve never been to Huber’s, I can give it an enthusiastic thumb’s up.  I do have to caution you – if you are a bit of a light-weight, and your husband is a bit of a prankster, take his cell-phone away from him before you drink one of those Spanish coffees.  Egad, let’s just say it had an impact on this girl.

Then, we headed down the waterfront to the Veritable Quandary for dinner.  We had the bacon wrapped dates and the pumpkin empanada for appetizers (the dates are fantastic!), the Cream of Potato soup and Poached Egg, Smoked Bacon & Butter Lettuce on Crispy Cornbread  salad for a first course (hubby is still raving over the salad), and the Osso Bucco and Seared Scallops Wrapped in Pancetta for our main course.  And, of course, we finished the evening with coffees and the chocolate Nocello souffle for dessert.

All in all, it was a fantastic day of gastronomic delights.  Of course, it was a really good idea that we walked quite a bit because I’m pretty sure I eclipsed my recommended caloric intake.  But I have to say, it was a fabulous way to celebrate the past 17 years with my sweetie and I can only hope to have such a fabulous repeat on our 34th!

If you head to the medibuntu website, the “repository howto” links to a wiki page with instructions for adding the repository in Ubuntu. Only that it offers a quite complex command to run in a terminal. This is not very friendly to new Ubuntu users I think, so this is the GUI way of doing it for Ubuntu 9.10:

1. Load in your browser this url: http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg. This is the repository key file.
2. From your browser menu select “File -> Save page as..” and save it somewhere temporarily, for example on your desktop.
3. Now from the Ubuntu main menu, select “System -> System administration -> Software sources”. It will ask for your user password.
4. In the “Other software” tab, press the add button, paste the following line and click “Add source”:

deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ karmic free non-free

5. Change to the “Certificates” tab, press “Add key from file” and select the key file you have saved previously in your system.
6. Click close and you are done. It will ask you to refresh the software sources catalog, so select to refresh it.

Od początku istnienia Internetu, na serwerach gromadzone są terabajty różnych informacji. Sieć to miejsce, gdzie bardzo trudno jest zatuszować jakąś informację, zwłaszcza, jeśli jest ona kontrowersyjna i zdążyła zdobyć już wystarczającą liczbę widzów. Wówczas wszelkie próby usunięcia takiego materiału z sieci zaowocują wzmożonym jego kopiowaniem i utrwalaniem w coraz nowszych miejscach. Jednak, należy zauważyć, że podobne zjawiska następują na w stosunkowo niewielkim odcinku czasu, a w porównaniu do trwałości niektórych przekazów ze starożytności, okres trwałości informacji w sieci, to zaledwie drobna chwila. Mimo iż zjawisko to jest tak nowe i tak niepewna jest jego przyszłość i trwałość, to już teraz pojawiają się pytania, o to, czy Internet może stać się kroniką ludzkości. Wśród zwolenników i sceptyków pojawiają się i tacy,

co porównują Internet z Biblioteką Aleksandryjską i przypominają jej straszny los, czyli zniszczenie olbrzymich ilości literatury czemu przypisuje się późniejsze “mroki średniowiecza”. Nie zawaham się uznać, że dzisiejsze społeczeństwo, poza ogromną wiedzą zgromadzoną w sieci, cechuje minimalna wiedza jednostki. Miejmy nadzieję, że zjawisko to jest jedynie przejściowe, ale na dzień dzisiejszy trudno przewidzieć dalszy rozwój obecnej sytuacji.

Ogromna rzesza ludzi, korzystających na co dzień z sieci, nie potrafi zadawać pytań wyszukiwarce, żeby znaleźć odpowiedź. Efektem tego, jest zaśmiecanie forów tematycznych owymi pytaniami, które dla bardziej rozgarniętych użytkowników są co najmniej irytujące i często takiego delikwenta odsyłają na powrót do wyszukiwarki i krąg się zamyka. To zaledwie jeden z wielu przykładów, innym może być podobna sytuacja z pominięciem pierwszego kroku czyli samodzielnej próby znalezienia informacji. Tego typu sytuacje często pojawiają się na znanym forum programu 3D jakim jest Blender.

Przykład Blendera i społeczności która wokół niego się rozwinęła w pewien sposób może obrazować to co dzieje się we współczesnej sieci. Mamy tu do czynienia z programem do tworzenia grafiki, animacji, prezentacji oraz gier. Swoisty potężny kombajn, gdzie z każdą kolejną wersją coraz mniej sprawdza się powiedzenie, że jeżeli coś jest do wszystkiego, to musi być do niczego. Istotna jest pierwsza część powyższego zdania :program do tworzenia. Otóż, jak już wspominałam wcześniej sieć daje pozorne wrażenie możliwości bycia twórcą każdemu. Każdy może coś napisać, namalować, nagrać i opublikować to w sieci pokazując szerokiemu gronu odbiorców, których nigdy w życiu być może nie miałby szans zdobyć w realnym świecie. I tak Blender daje możliwość tworzenia doskonałej grafiki komputerowej. Z różnych powodów ludzie podejmują się nauki obsługi tego narzędzia. Jedni naprawdę czują pociąg w tę stronę, natomiast inni, zwłaszcza patrząc na ich prace, zwyczajnie nie wiedzą jeszcze gdzie jest ich miejsce w sieci.

Forum o nazwie Blenderownia, które służy tutaj za przykład, jest miejscem archiwizowania, zdobywania i dodawania nowej wiedzy, oraz z drugiej strony: miejscem przekształcania wiedzy na efekty. Społeczność Blenderowni jest niewielka, bo liczy sobie zaledwie 2734¹, którzy wysłali łącznie 51166 wiadomości w 4475 zamieszczonych w sześciu kategoriach. Mamy tutaj zatem niewielką społeczność skupioną wokół wiedzy i od razu możemy zacząć obserwację w jaki sposób owa wiedza funkcjonuje.

Prawdziwym uprzykrzeniem osób posiadających wiedzę, których można by nazwać na wzór poprzednich modeli społecznych, mentorami, jest grupa, której nie można nawet nazwać uczniami, ponieważ ten jako taki, posiadający mniejszą wiedzę, powinien z szacunkiem odnosić się do tych,

Na wstępie chciałbym zaznaczyć, że nie będzie to recenzja Karmic Koali a bardziej garść spostrzeżeń, które wynikły po trzech tygodniach użytkowania nowej dystrybucji Ubuntu. Kilka rzeczy dało mi się lekko we znaki. Jednak chciałbym od razu powiedzieć, że należałem do tej mniejszości użytkowników, którym cała migracja nie spędziła snu z powiek Na większość problemów znalazłem rozwiązanie, więc od razu je podam. Pomysły i przemyślenia, pojawią się po drodze…

ROZGRZEWKA

I'm the Metal Machine! ))

Szczerze mówiąc troszkę mi się nie chce wierzyć, że aż 90% użytkowników poległo przy migracji, napotykając problemy, które dla nich były nie do przeskoczenia. Z tego co mi się obiło o uszy najwięcej problemów było z brakiem możliwości zalogowania się do systemu, który jedyne co zrobił, to powitał użytkowników czarnym ekranem. Osobiście jak zawsze, zainstalowałem Ubuntu „na czysto”. Po instalacji wszystko było cacy, przeprowadziłem aktualizację i zrobiłem reset. W tym momencie identyczna historia przytrafiła się również i mnie. Nie załamując rąk, od razu przeszedłem w tryb tekstowy, pobrałem najnowsze stery z FTPa NVIDII, zainstalowałem je, włączyłem GDMa i po problemie! Może u innych były zgoła odmienne przyczyny. U mnie wystarczyła poprawna, ręczna instalacja sterów od karty graficznej.

Kolejna sprawa: brak dźwięku na kartach Creative. We wcześniejszych wersjach systemu, występowała podobna niedogodność. Jednak tam wystarczyło wejść z poziomu GUI we właściwości dźwięku i zaznaczyć: Analog/Digital Output. W obecnej dystrybucji troszkę przebudowano owy interfejs graficzny i niestety zabrakło w nim wymaganej opcji. Ale pozostał mikser ALSY dla trybu CLI(zobacz).

• wpisujemy w terminalu: alsamixer
• odnajdujemy przełącznik: A/D i aktywujemy go klawiszem M

Wszystko Dźwięk działa, problem rozwiązany!

NA PLUS

Zaznaczam jeszcze raz – nie wymieniam wszystkich plusów systemu, bo to nie jest recenzja. Wspominam jedynie o nowych elementach, które rzuciły mi się w oczy w stosunku do wersji poprzedniej.

• GRUB2 – do poczytania tutaj i tutaj
• xsplash – ogólnie OK. Jest to na pewno krok w dobrym kierunku. Jednak można jeszcze ten aspekt dopracować(zapewne tak się w przyszłości stanie).
• Ikony Humanity i ujednolicenie kolorystyki ikon na panelach – ikony są czytelne i prezentują się świetnie! Ujednolicenie kolorystyki również wydaję się być trafionym pomysłem. Boli jedynie fakt, że jeszcze nie wszystkie aplikacje posiadają, odpowiednio stonowane wersje swoich ikon. Przez co mogą one burzyć cały efekt :/ np. DropBOX, Audacious itp… Wszystko jest z czasem do dopracowania. Ale myślę, że lepszym rozwiązaniem ze strony Canonical, byłaby możliwość automatycznego przerabiania każdej ikony, która pojawia się na panelu, do wersji spójnej kolorystycznie.
• CMSS – w nowym Ubuntu, nie potrzebne są już sztuczki, które opisałem w tym wpisie. Teraz wystarczy wybrać odpowiedni profil i wszystko gra jak należy. Dźwięk przestrzenny wykorzystuje głośniki w sposób wzorowy, natomiast standardowe stereo „z automatu” zostaje rozbite na resztę satelitek. Oczywiście stosunek brzmienia tył/przód można swobodnie regulować.
• UbuntuONE – nie będę piał z zachwytu, ponieważ od dawna używam DropBOXa, który to na dzień dzisiejszy znacznie przewyższa UbuntuONE, pod każdym aspektem. Jest to nowa usługa, która cały czas jest rozwijana. Myślę, że za jakiś czas śmiało dorówna konkurencji. Lecz obecnie zarzuciłem pomysł jej używania, bo zabolały mnie najbardziej dwie rzeczy. Problemy z synchronizacją(a bardziej uploadem plików) oraz brak informacji o tym co właściwie wykonywane jest w danej chwili. Owszem ikonka się zmieniła, sygnalizując jakąś aktywność. Ale zabrakło konkretów w postaci danych na temat plików, które są wysyłane/aktualizowane. Starałem się 2x wysłać na serwer 20MB plik i w obu przypadkach poniosłem klęskę. PASS – wrócę do UbuntuONE za pół roku.
• Narzędzie do obsługi dysków – developerzy posłuchali chyba skomleń niektórych użytkowników i przynajmniej teraz etykiety partycji, będzie można zmieniać bez używania: tune2fs -L ))
• Brak Stałego Zezwolenia – montowaniu partycji towarzyszy teraz czasowe podwyższenie uprawnień, symbolizowane odpowiednią ikonką w zasobniku(patrz obrazek). Do czasu, aż charakterystyczne kluczyki znikną, możliwe jest montowanie kolejnych partycji bez podawania hasła. Przy czym można w każdym momencie kliknąć w ową ikonkę, zdejmując tym samym wspomniane uprawnienia „na żądanie”. Według mnie jest to lepsze rozwiązanie, niż np. przyznawanie stałego zezwolenia, jak to miało miejsce we wcześniejszych wersjach Ubuntu.
  

  Czasowo podwyższone uprawnienia

• Repozytoria PPA – dodawanie repozytoriów PPA, zostało w znacznym stopniu uproszczone. Teraz można dodać repo wpisując w terminalu: sudo add-apt-repository nazwa. Natomiast sam klucz, zostanie automatycznie pobrany.

NA MINUS

• Centrum Oprogramowania – do ciężkiej cholery! Jak można było tak spierdzielić stary, dobry Dodaj/Usuń?!? Widać, że całe narzędzie jest jeszcze mocno niedopracowane i według mnie w tym stanie nie powinno w ogóle trafić do gotowej wersji systemu. Generalnie żeby zrobić to samo co kiedyś, trzeba się 2x więcej naklikać. Najgorsze, że zabrakło systemu ocen/popularności! Pal licho starych wyjadaczy i użytkowników, którzy wiedzą jaka aplikacja zaspokoi ich potrzeby(ja i tak używam albo Synaptica, albo Terminala do instalacji). Gorzej z nowicjuszami, którzy cały czas eksperymentują. Wcześniej mogli oszczędzić troszkę czasu i skupić się na aplikacjach, które mają ugruntowaną pozycję wśród użytkowników. Teraz będą musieli troszkę więcej pobłądzić, zanim odnajdą to czego poszukiwali
• Empathy – kolejna porażka obecnej dystrybucji. Program może współpracuje dobrze z protokołami popularnymi na zachodzie. Jednak obsługa GG, to najkrócej mówiąc – tragedia! U mnie komunikator od święta zalogował się na konto a i tak tracił cały czas połączenie. Powróciłem do sprawdzonego Pidgina.
• Flash – jakiś babol wkradł się do tego całego wrappera flashowego w wyniku czego, używanie myszy we Flashu(konkretnie jej przycisków) stało się niemożliwe! Rozwiązaniem była instalacja normalnej, 64 bitowej wersji Flasha ze strony Adobe:

• Problemy z SDLem
  1. Szalejący wskaźnik myszki np. w NEXUIZ. Edytujemy plik: /etc/X11/xorg.conf, dopisując do sekcji Module następujący wpis:

  Option “omit xfree86-dga”
  EndSubSection
  2. Trzeszczący i klikający dźwięk, przy wybranej konfiguracji 5.1(i więcej).
  sudo aptitude purge libsdl1.2debian-alsa
  sudo aptitude install libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio
• Kosmetyka – nie jest to jakiś wielki minus, raczej niedogodność. Dodano troszkę więcej teł za to usunięto część wygaszaczy(w tym moje ulubione :/ ). Postanowiono również, że napisy będą obok ikon. Cóż kiedyś sam tą opcję aktywowałem, ale z czasem doszedłem do wniosku, że standardowe ustawienie pod ikonami jest jednak lepsze. Może marnuje troszeczkę przestrzeni, ale za to przyciski są konkretne I wreszcie najgorsza głupota – usunięcie ikon z menu podręcznego i po części z menu aplikacji. Debilizm totalny! Szczególnie, że niektóre ikony nadal były wyświetlane a po tych które zniknęły, pozostała śmiesznie wyglądająca, niewykorzystana przestrzeń. Ten krok w przypadku środowiska GUI, to czysty absurd!
  Ikony można przywrócić w Preferencjach Wyglądu(patrz obrazek po prawej).

PODSUMOWANIE

Według twórców Ubuntu, Karmic Koala jest mocno przejściowym wariantem systemu. Pisząc wprost – jest to proteza pomiędzy tym co znamy z 9.04 a nowościami, jakie mają pojawić się w 10.04. Dodano troszkę nowych pomysłów pomimo, że wyraźnie widać, iż nie są to rozwiązania do końca gotowe. Część koncepcji przyznam szczerze – mocno mnie zdumiała. Jest to chyba pierwsza wersja Ubuntu co do której, mam tak mieszane odczucia. Jedyne co pozostaje, to dostosować Koalę do swoich potrzeb i mieć nadzieję, że Lucid Lynx, rzeczywiście pokaże pazur, udowadniając jednocześnie, że wcześniej podjęte kroki miały sens a wszystko było częścią dalekowzrocznej strategii działania.

Niestety zaczynają mnie niepokoić, kolejne „trafne” pomysły, które co chwilę wypływają ze strony developerów. Ostatni z nich zakłada wykluczenie GIMPa ze standardowej instalacji! Powodem ma być ilość miejsca, którą aplikacja zajmuje na płycie oraz mała liczba użytkowników, korzystająca z programu. LOL! Jeszcze kilka takich genialnych zagrań a szybciej będzie zainstalować Debiana i dostosować go do swoich potrzeb. Zresztą ten pomysł zrodził się w mojej głowie już jakiś czas temu i z każdym dniem, zaczyna coraz bardziej dojrzewać…

Por diversos motivos, especialmente filosóficos, maneira de estar na vida, prefiro o Software Livre a qualquer outro, por essa razão tento sempre proteger as minhas máquinas de software com ‘problemas existenciais’ um dos exemplos mais claros são tudo o que tenha a ver com tecnologias Cavalo de Tróia que a empresa monopólio, microsoft, com a ajuda dos seus esbilros (novell e até certo ponto a canonical) tem vindo a colocar tipo sleeper cells em diversas distros e software como por exemplo o OpenOffice.org, uma vez que pode ter componentes da novell.

Entre os exemplos desse software contaminado com por exemplo o m$-novell-mono e m$-ooxml encontra-se o GNOME (que ainda pode vir a ficar mais contaminado, veja-se o caso do dbus e do Banshee+moonlight), muito especialmente diversos dos seus componentes, F-Spot, Banshee, Evolution, Tomboy, Beagle, gnome-do, plugins como o m$-novell-moonlight entre outros.

Para nos protegermos de muitos destes problemas podemos logo acabar com eles instalando uma distro totalmente livre e sem blobs no kernel linux, basta para tal instalar uma das diversas distros livres que a FSF aconselha, gosto bastante da gNewSense e da Trisquel.

Caso optemos por outras, as que usam o KDE com grande probabilidade apenas estão afectadas pelos blobs do kernel, aos quais por vezes não podemos fugir devido ao hardware que possuímos, bem como eventuais problemas de plugins como o flash bem como de algumas particularidades do OpenOffice.org, as quais se resolvem usando a versão oficial bem como em relação ao plugin flash, podemos sempre usar o swfdec, gnash bem como a extensão Greasemonkey com um script por forma a vermos os videos do youtube dentro do MPlayer ou mesmo do VLC, ou ainda o excelente Minitube

Embora o ideal seja o uso e abuso das novas extensões HTML5, de audio e video usando codecs e containers abertos e livres como os vorbis e theora em ogg, que já são fortemente usadas pela wikipedia, archive.org e até pelo site dailymotion e que permitem coisas fabulosas como estas e estas (só funcionam em browsers a sério, ou seja que seguem padrões da W3C Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera bem como outros derivados dos motores de rendering Mozilla Gecko e Webkit)

Para nos livrar-mos dessa praga podemos seguir estes passos, ms-novell mono – conjunto de aplicações das quais se deve fugir – como removê-las.

O comando para nos livrar-mos deste lixo não podia ser mais simples, por exemplo para a versão do Ubuntu, que anda a ficar muito contaminada;

$sudo apt-get remove –purge mono-common libmono0

Embora nos links que aqui coloquei já a mencione uma, existem duas ferramentas para verificar a nossa instalação e para não deixar instalar nada contaminado pelo m$-novell-mono, são o Stallman Virtual vrms e a mononono.

Desde hace años, cada vez que se pone de moda un nuevo lenguaje de programación, junto a frameworks orientados al desarrollo web ágil y rápido, se suele decir que Java va a morir, en cambio, sigue ahí, y con más energía que nunca.

Ya pasó con Python y el framework Django, junto con Ruby y el famoso Rails, que además hacen jocosas parodias sobre el lenguaje Java, cuando en realidad Java es un lenguaje, una máquina virtual y una plataforma. Pero claro, si quieres hacer lo mismo que esos frameworks luego tendrías que añadir cualquiera de los cientos de frameworks que existen en el mundo Java: Hibernate, JPA, Spring, Struts, JSF, EJB,…

Pues bien, se acabó el rollo, con Spring Roo se puede realizar un desarrollo ágil igual que Django o Rails, pero llegando aún más allá. Incluye una consola donde, haciendo uso de autocompletado mediante TABs, puedes ir creando, paso a paso, todo lo necesario para implementar una aplicación web Maven2, haciendo uso de los frameworks tipo del mundo Java: Hibernate, Spring, MVC,… y con poco más que ir siguiendo los pasos que te indica la propia ayuda en línea de la consola.

Jag målade in mig lite i ett hörn när jag började med den här serien med inlägg. Ingen dag har känts helt rätt för att skriva det sista inlägget – det i sin tur har hindrat mig från att släng in smånotiser i bloggen med. Trist.

Nu är det så dags att avsluta, storstilat avsluta till och med. Detta inlägg kommer att behandla och vara en historieskrivning för Blekinge studentkårs aktiva arbete med öppen källkod. Studentkåren har länge varit en förkämpe och stor nyttjare av öppen källkod men man har inte precist levt som man lär. Vi är väl inte hela vägen fram i något som andra kan ta del av men ambitionen finns där.

Vårterminen 2005 började jag engagera mig i studentkårens sektion för kårpuben i Ronneby. Som nyvald informationsansvarig blev jag involverad i driften av informationssystemet som en ensam stackare utvecklat för sektionens vinst. När jag var en del av driften av de fysiska maskinerna blev jag snart en del av utvecklingen av koden också. Det var inte precis något kontrollerat och snyggt uppstyrt bygge vi hade att göra med här. Men det funkade och folk var nöjda med hur det blev. Åren gick och när jag lämnat sektionen satt jag kvar med inloggningar och hjälpte till med lagningar. Efter mig på informationsposten hamnade Lars/Läffe/Laeffe – även han hängde kvar och i sin tur drog han in Jonas/DrLaban i det hela. Det var bara underhåll och i någon yttepytte mån kunde det hamna en ny funktion på sidan. Undantagsfall. Tills sommaren 2008.

I maj 2008 tog DrLaban initiativet till att vi skulle göra något mer med det som kallas “kårsajten“. Laga fel, lägga till funktioner och helt enkelt ta hand om den. Jag skulle börja min sista termin på BTH och hade inget särskilt för mig utöver studier. Det är dessutom roligare om man kan snacka med nån om det man gör än att bara sitta hemma och hitta på egna ideer och se om de funkar. Jag hoppade på tåget. Med följde dessutom både DrLaban och Laeffe. Snart hörde Emma/Soya och Thomas/Tomten av sig och även de hakade på. Tomten mer åt drift, säkerhet och kringsystem medan Soya grävde ner sig rejält i koden tillsammans med oss andra tre. Vi jobbade på bra, DrLaban och Laeffe drev på i utvecklingsmetodikspåret som de vana PT-studenter de är och en metod närliggande Scrum började nyttjas. Allt gick inte tokbra men det blev ganska snyggt. Vi strukturerade upp källkoden i ett kodförråd i Subversion, kopplade det till projektverktyget Trac och det skapades en massa dokumentation och ideer på nya funktioner och koncept föddes. Vi drog lite åt olika håll och vi gör väl det fortfarande men arbetet löper på så jädra snyggt månad efter månad. Det har nu gått ett och ett halvt år i arbetet med kårsajten, vi har numera börjat jobba med att ta in åsikter och ideer från kårhussektionerna som en naturlig del i processen. Ytterligare en källa till inspiration och irritation. Det ser ut att gå riktigt bra.

Men det är inte änden på historien, det är snarare historien i sin linda. För ungefär ett år sedan började kårstyrelsen intressera sig för vad vi sysslade med. Jag hade aviserat att jag skulle nog flytta från Blekinge halvsnart så det stöd jag var i att ta hand om mailsystem och annat behövde omvärderas.

För att vi fem skulle kunna utveckla kårsajten på ett bra sätt framöver och för att kunna skänka lite struktur för vem som äger vad och hur saker förhåller sig till studentpopulationen så diskuterade vi organisationsform. Att sträva efter att bli en del av studentkårens paraply var vi helt ense om från början. Hur det skulle genomföras var mer svårdefinierat. Vi skrev en Verksamhetsförordning (typ stadga) som reglerade hur arbetet sköttes och leddes och hur vårt förhållande till organisationen såg ut. Den antogs av Kårstyrelsen i december 2008. När vi väl hade blivit Sektionen för Internetbaserad Socialisering så hörde Kårstyrelsen av sig och undrade om vi inte kunde ha tid för övriga delar av verksamheten, typ 15-20 servrar och klientdatorer, skrivare, nätverk, kassaapparater och sånt. Det var inte riktigt vad vi planerat och kanske var det inte vad vi skulle gjort men glada och trevliga och vänliga som vi är så sa vi ja och bad att få återkomma med ett förslag på hur.

SIS skulle omformas men grundtanken och processerna skulle kvarstå. Hur i hela friden då? Vi lyckades skapa en organisation i studentkårens sektionsramverk med två nivåer. En visionär övergripande styrelse(Äldsterådet) och autonoma undergrupper (basgrupper). Basgrupperna sätter sina ramar själva om hur de jobbar med vilka verktyg och vilka som är en del av dem. De enda kraven i organisationen är att basgrupperna leds av någon i Äldsterådet, att allting ska göras så öppet det bara går för att leva med den öppna källkodens natur och att sektionen inte ska vara ekonomiskt beroende av någon.

Funkar det då? Det har snart gått ett halvår med den nya organisationen. På papperet fungerar det utmärkt. Fysiskt vet jag inte riktigt. Kårsajtsgruppen jobbar på som sagt. Driftgruppen som tar hand om fysiska maskiner och nätverk och sånt ser ut att funka men det är mycket personberoende och mycket adhoc snarare än strukturerat och tydligt. Väldokumenterat är det dock i driften. För övriga delar är arbetet inte särskilt tydligt eller ens särskilt påtagligt alls. En av grupperna är den jag själv leder, leder och leder förresten. Det har inte hänt så mycket men bot och bättring hoppas jag på =)

Jag tror att konceptet med SIS är bra. Grundstommen i hur gruppen funkar är jättebra. Vi har en del berg kvar att bestiga, ett av dem är att skaffa fler som kan hjälpa till. Vi har alldeles för lite resurser för den kostym vi tagit in i provrummet just nu. Därmed inte sagt att vi inte kan leverera för det kan vi, alla som är med sliter så sjukt hårt och är hjälpsamma och glada och trevliga. Det är nästa steg som saknas och det är ett jädra hästakliv att ta.

Låt oss titta lite mer på det här med tekniken i gruppen. Jag nämnde att kårsajten kör en utvecklingsmetod närliggaden Scrum. Processen för den finns ganska väl dokumenterat i wikin vi använder men i korta drag har vi anpassat saker för att fungera distribuerat på nätet och utan att alla involverade har projektet som huvudsyssla. Istället för dagliga möten har vi avstämningar tisdagar, torsdag och söndagar – kort och koncist för att fånga besvären i projektet. Dessutom håller alla till på Trac, IRC och mail så det går att få hjälp relativt omgående. Kårsajten är ett stort PHP-bygge med en MySQL-databas i botten och ett eget ramverk i PHP ovanpå en Debianmaskin som kör Apache.

Som konstrast till strukturerade Kårsajten så har vi då Diariet och 2.0/www, Diariet har haft möten och jag har en intention på hur jag vill jobba med uppdraget men det är inte mycket mer än så idag. Bland annat är det klart och färdigt att vi kommer att skriva den mesta koden i Python och nyttja Django som ramverk – nya impulser och nya intryck för SIS. 2.0/www styrs av Laeffe och ävan han är helt adhoc så vitt jag vet. Jag tror att det kommer en rejäl runda med grejjer inom de närmsta månaderna där – det uppdraget är dock mycket mer löst specat än mitt eget som faktiskt ska producera något färdigt till den siste juni 2010.

Blekinge studentkår är inte öppen källkod än men det finns stor potential i det vi bygger inom studentkåren vad gäller både källkod och kultur för att vi snart ska kunna flytta mer saker till öppenheten.

New Aussie Supercomputer Runs Linux

The fact that a new supercomputer runs Linux should hardly come as a surprise to anyone.  What else would it run? W7? ROFL.  Well, if it did run W7 I’m pretty sure someone would have been all over the reporters for the Sydney Morning Herald making sure that they mentioned it in their article “Australia’s new supercomputer outflops the lot“.  However, since it isn’t, the reporter had a discretion on what to report, and they didn’t mention what operating system it ran.   I had to look the thing up on Wikipedia, where it told me that it runs Linux – Centos actually.

It is hardly surprising that closed software systems are so prevalent in Government when Governments themselves fund extensive lobbying and marketing by their vendors.  Of course, the line item doesn’t say “marketing and lobbying”.   No, instead it reads “Ridiculously Inflated Monopoly License Fees Courtesy of the Copyright Act” (sometimes it’s just “License Fees”).  Governments need to even the playing field and support open source marketing to the same extent they subsidise closed source marketing.

I’m not really back into the swing of things totally yet, but I can craft! I got a bunch of embroidery supplies (as you can see) and am preparing the “floss” so that it won’t get all tangled up once I start using it.

I just get tired more easily than I did before and I’m not really able to plan as many activities as I once did. I’m learning that the hard way. I know it hasn’t even been two weeks since I’ve been out of the hospital, but I keep thinking I can do more. I need to keep reminding myself not to make plans and to just take it one day at a time. Really listen to my body and when it is tired… rest.

This week is going to be a challenge. I’m back at work full time! I’m sure I can make it through the day, but I don’t think I am going to make plans after work. I sort of had to realize this today after going out for a couple of hours and being exhausted after. It’s easy to take naps on the weekends. I’m sure each day will get better though.

OK, I want to finish a few more of these floss things and then I will “hit the hay”.

Depois das boas vindas do Francisco Ryder, foi a vez do Marco Silva, um estudante do IST do Tagus Park, dar o seu olhar sobre as vantagens e potencialidades de uma certificação deste tipo para estudantes universitários, nomeadamente estudantes desta área tecnológica.

Uma das afirmações do Marco, a qual infelizmente não me surpreendeu, foi a de que os estudantes do IST estão pouco habituados a utilizarem Software Livre, segundo o Marco a grande maioria usa FLOSS quando trabalhos em determinadas cadeiras assim o obriga e colocando logo de parte assim que acabam essas tarefas, voltando ao monopólio.

Para o Marco a Universidade tem muitas coisas positivas mas nem sempre prepara para o mundo real, é aqui que entra a Certificação LPI, a qual está preparada para isso mesmo, um contacto com aquilo que se usa no mundo real e as dificuldades que nos esperam.

Seguiu-se Diogo Rebelo da DRI, o qual abordou o tema sobre o ponto de vista do interesse por parte das empresas a quando das contratações de novos elementos e de como tendo uma certificação LPI faz toda a diferença, especialmente numa primeira análise aos CV’s.

O Diogo, afirmou que tal como os chineses vêem na crise uma oportunidade, também o Software Livre durante a crise que atravessamos tem olhado para o mercado como uma grande oportunidade para entrar cada vez mais nele bem como para cimentar a confiança que muitas empresas têm depositado neste tipo de tecnologia aberta.

Afirmou ainda que a crise implica que as empresas se tornem mais eficientes, como tal e com a necessidade de novos técnicos desta área do Software Livre, é necessária uma certificação como a LPI que se encontra no Top Ten das certificações de TI a nível mundial.

O Diogo fez ainda uma breve apresentação de como se processa todo o estudo e implementação da certificação LPI, sendo que esta é uma certificação da comunidade para a comunidade, onde essa comunidade contribui com milhares de perguntas sobre os mais variados tópicos, sendo depois formatadas em exames beta que vão sendo aperfeiçoados até ao exame final, por forma a ser uma certificação credível, de grande qualidade.

Nesta certificação o que interessa são os conceitos, os fundamentos base, uma vez que assim não se fica apenas com uma visão de um produto, mas sim com uma visão global de toda esta área tecnológica.

Dois pontos que ainda frisou, foram a informação que as empresas da ESOP estão a crescer e que com esse crescimento e com a cada vez maior utilização de Software Livre nas empresas portuguesas, existe cada vez mais uma maior necessidade de certificar pessoas para dar resposta a este crescimento do mercado.

Após uma visão mais empresarial do LPI, seguiu-se a apresentação do João Teixeira, o representante da FLAG, que abordou o tema da formação.

Depois do intervalo, foi a vez do Ricardo Melo da DRI, uma das únicas duas pessoas em Portugal com a certificação LPI 3, vir fazer um apanhado do que é na realidade a certificação LPI.

Deu alguns conselhos para a preparação para um exame LPI, verificar os tópicos e os exemplos nos site da LPI, indicou que os exames podem ser feitos em diversos sítios e que nos encontros têm a vantagem de ter sempre um preço de promoção.

Explicou que o LPI apenas promove e ajuda à criação da certificação, quem a desenvolve é a comunidade de Software Livre, convidando-se pessoas das diversas áreas por forma a que se criem tópicos sobre as diversas operações que no mercado de trabalho são as mais efectuadas e após isso chega-se aos testes beta etc, que acima mencionei.

Informou ainda que o LPI 3 irá ser mais específico, tendo um core e depois diversas especializações, dividindo-se em algo como 301 (core), 302 (mixed environments), 303 (security) e 304 (virtualização), 305 (web services) e por fim o 306 (Mail and messaging services).

Seguiu-se Gustavo Homem, da Ângulo Sólido, mas na qualidade de representante da ESOP, o qual fez a questão, e se existisse de um momento para o outro um Blackout Linux? Quais seriam as dificuldades que as pessoas que usam estas tecnologias e a grande Rede Internet enfrentariam?

A questão é pertinente, uma vez que na sua grande maioria as pessoas que hoje usam, acedem à rede não têm consciência que a grande maioria dos serviços, dos diversos gadgets, telemóveis, routers etc que usam, estão a correr sobre GNU/Linux.
Indo um pouco mais além, não são apenas estes sistemas, mas até POS, como o caso do Jumbo ou da Rádio Popular, aviões militares, barcos, supercomputadores, navios, gestores de tráfego terrestre e aéreo e até motos, câmaras fotográficas e tv’s.

Para o Gustavo, o lema da certificação é tão simples como, “Certify or die”!

Rui Seabra da ANSOL e João Neves da Intraneia, focaram mais uma vez as suas apresentações nas vantagens de se ser certificado e de como uma certificação permite diminuir o gap que existe entre uma aprendizagem de um sistema monopolista e um sistema livre, que é sabido tem uma curva de aprendizagem um pouco mais acentuada mas que também por isso tem muito mais vantagens e benefícios.

Afirmou que tem estado a fazer as certificações com o objectivo de verificar com esta tem evoluído e aperceber-se da qualidade desta, especialmente tendo em conta a sua utilização no mundo real do mercado de trabalho e de como esta pode ser usada como filtro para uma pré-avaliação de um CV.

This post only begs you to ask yourself: why am I Googling for pictures of some goofy looking sportswriter’s wife? Is it just because his book hit number one on the New York Times’ best-seller list that you are now taking time out of your day to search the Internet for some anonymous mother of two?  Does that justify it? Sure it doesn’t take long to run an internet search, and you were curious, and it was there. But think about this: when was the last time you called your dear old mother to tell her that you love her? When was the last time you flossed you teeth? When was the last time you looked up a word you didn’t know in the dictionary? I don’t know how you would answer any of these questions specifically, but I can say that you have definitely spent a portion of your life Googling for photos of some random wife more recently…

Have you ever thought about how much life would stink if you were a disposable razor? Hear me out.

I sometimes try to figure out what would be the worst possible thing in the world to be. Currently, being a tampon is at #1.  A multitude of other items have made the top 10 list as well.  These things include toilet paper, coffee filters, toe nail clippings, disposable razors, Q-tips, dumpsters, floss, boogers, and thongs.

Seriously, think about it.  How awful would it be to be a piece of toilet paper or a disposable razor or a string of floss? Imagine it: you are totally and completely necessary to us (well, to most of us), but after you are used, you are tossed into the toilet or trash.  That’s it.  You do the job, and they are done with you. And to make matters worse, humans are grossed out by you even though they need you.

How horrid to have such an unappreciated (and generally ephemeral) life.

For the most part, we really need these things, but they disgust us after we use them.  As such, we just toss them aside with no thought to it.  And no appreciation! Have you ever found yourself thanking the inventor of coffee filters or thongs? Have you ever thanked your nose for forming boogers for without them you’d have dirt and debris flowing right on into your body through your nasal passage?

I really don’t know why I think about this.  This summer, a friend psychoanalyzed me. She thinks that maybe it’s some fear that resides in the deep recesses of my mind.  A fear that, like these things, I am actually disposable.

Anyhow, I’ve got to clean out this coffee pot and ditch this coffee filter. I just hate the look of wet coffee grind. It really grosses me out.

Benefits of Miswak (Chewing Stick)

A Miswak or Siwak is probably an alien thing to the western world. But, it’s a twig which a majority of people from Muslim countries use daily to brush their teeth. Although it might sound outdated to use twigs from trees for cleaning your teeth, studies conducted on the Miswak prove otherwise. Studies have inferred that Miswak is better than toothpaste for preventing gum disease. It is being known as chewing stick in the western world and is being looked upon as a form of alternative medicine. So, let’s analyze this “wonder twig” keeping documented scientific studies as proofs.

But first of all, why would anyone think of using a tree twig to clean their teeth? The fact is ancient man did not have the facility of a toothbrush and many cultures have used Miswak for oral hygiene. The use of Miswak is well spread in the Muslim population of the world, and is a common entity in Muslim countries. The reason for common use of Miswak by Muslims can be attributed to religious beliefs. The last messenger of Islam used it frequently and also instructed his followers to do the same and hence the practice continues widely in Muslim countries. There are 70 benefits of Miswak as suggested by Islamic Literature and many of these have been scientifically proven and the rest haven’t been studied yet.

You might be wondering what exactly a Miswak is in the first place. The Miswak is obtained from the twigs of the Arak tree (Peelu tree) although a few other trees can also be used to obtain it such as walnut and olive.

A few important benefits of Miswak

• Kills Gum disease causing bacteria.

• Fights plaque effectively.
• Fights against caries.

• Removes Bad breath and odor from mouth.

• Creates a fragrance in the mouth.

• Effectively clean between teeth due to its parallel bristles.

• Increases salivation and hence inhibits dry mouth (Xerostomia)

Scientific Studies on Miswak

Although the 70 supposed benefits of Miswak range widely, the main one we are examining is its effect on oral health. So, let’s throw some light on scientific studies conducted on Miswak.

The Wrigley Company made a study on Miswak which was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The study found that mints laced with Miswak extract were 20 times more effective in killing bacteria than ordinary mints. A small testimony to this fact is that after half an hour, the mints laced with Miswak extract killed about 60% of the bacteria where as the ordinary mints managed only 3.6%

In the August issue of Journal of Periodontology (2008) appeared a study conducted by Swedish researchers on Miswak. The study apparently found that suspended Miswak pieces in a petridish (medium for culturing bacteria) were able to kill bacteria that cause periodontal disease with out being in physical contact with the bacteria. The researchers suggested that Miswak might be giving antibiotics as gases trying to explain this phenomenon.

A study which compares toothbrushing and using Miswak (Miswak ing!) can be seen on Pubmed (U.S National Library for Medicine Service). The study concluded that Miswak was more effective than toothbrushing in reducing plaque and gingivitis provided it was used correctly. Similar studies found on the same website and elsewhere vouch for the effectiveness of Miswak over toothbrush.

A study conducted by a group of dentists at King Saud University concluded that using Miswak was at least as good as tooth brushing, if not better. There have been plenty of published studies on Miswak and infact entire books published which study its oral and systemic benefits.

Now, with all those studies chucked at you, you couldn’t help but wonder why it is so effective. This can be attributed to its strong antibacterial properties. Another important aspect to consider is that its bristles are parallel to the handle rather than perpendicular which means effective cleaning between the teeth. Now, that’s one natural toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.

HOW TO USE THE MISWAK

STEP ONE:
Simply scrape off about half an inch from the tip.

STEP TWO:
Then chew the tip gently until brush-like

STEP THREE:
Start brushing horizontally.

STEP FOUR:
After brushing wash the tip.

STEP FIVE:
Store miswak in packet provided so it doesn’t become dirty.

STEP SIX:
Before going sleep store the miswak in a glass filled with water and put the part of the miswak that was used and leave it overnight to be soaked.

STEP SEVEN:

In the morning cut the bristles and start from step one again, this ensures u have clean bristles every day so that it is more hygienic and effective.

Tips
- a Miswak should be one hand span in length
- It shouldn’t be too brittle, or too soft
- If it becomes dry, soak in rose water to ensure the end is soft
- wash after every use
- the best way to shape it is using a tool that isn’t too sharp (kitchen knife) or too dull (your little sisters scissors) but rather something in between like an unused garden tool cutter

Bei wordpress.com führt Firefox bereits die Statistik an – sein Siegeszug ist nicht mehr aufzuhalten. Das ist gut für Freie Software im Allgemeinen, und damit natürlich auch gut für Ubuntu.

La noticia de actualidad en el mundo de la informática es el lanzamiento del sistema operativo de Microsoft: Windows Seven. Bien, esto es así porque las campañas de publicidad y marketing así lo imponen al publico. Hay, sin embargo, otros Sistemas Operativos, de excelente factura, con tanta o seguramente mejor calidad que los de Microsoft: Mac OSX (Apple), Distribuciones de Linux, Solaris o BSD; e incluso muchos otros.

De estos, algunos tienen considerables ventajas respecto a Sistemas propietarios, caros y de código cerrado como los de Microsoft y Apple.
Estos sistemas, basados en la informática de código fuente abierto y Libre, no solo presentan muchas ventajas técnicas sobre los anteriormente citados, sinó que, además son en su mayor parte gratuitos. Cualquiera puede descargarlos gratis en Internet o encargar un CD/DVD por un módico precio.

Si pertenecen a alguna empresa, esta los cede gratuitamente y obtiene beneficios mediante servicios informáticos en hardware y software como, consultoria, mantenimiento, adaptación etc.
Estos sistemas son muy numerosos, están basados generalmente en componentes GNU, mas otras aplicaciones FLOSS y usando el núcleo Linux. Este conjunto de elementos conforma una Distribución de software y contiene numerosas aplicaciones informáticas; mas que suficientes para cualquier utilizador final, ya sea en el hogar en en el ámbito empresarial.
Tienen otra importante ventaja, están compuestos de software que es menos vulnerable, y menos susceptible de ser atacado por virus, malware, espías etc.
La buena noticia es que no son de actualidad una vez cada 3, 5 ó 7 años como los de Microsoft, sino que están siempre de actualidad.

Hay algunos sitios en Español donde se anuncian algunas de estas novedades Linux (barrapunto.com), pero a nivel mundial hay un Sitio web que es la referencia para tener toda la información deseada respecto a estos Sistemas Operativos y Distribuciones. Este sitio es “Distrowatch.com”

Si eres de los que usa aún Windows “Bad Vista” or “Worst 7even”, lo tienes fácil para cambiar: visita Distrowatch http://distrowatch.com y elije un Distribución Linux.
Desde hace ya varios años, desde el 2004, al menos, que yo recuerde, visito casi diariamente Distrowatch.com (http://distrowatch.com/). Siempre encuentro un placer extraño, una dicha inexplicable, y probablemente irracional, cada vez que una nueva distribución Linux, o de otro tipo (BSD flavours, Solaris…) compuesta por aplicaciones informáticas Libres y de código abierto, es lanzada en la Red.
DistroWatch es el sitio de referencia si quieres estar informado respecto a todo tipo de distribuciones de software Libre/Open Source (FLOSS: Free Libre Open source Software). La información esta básicamente Inglés, pero sus páginas tienen versión en otras lenguas, incluido el Español.

El Creador y encargado del mantenimiento del sitio es Ladislav Bodnar, aunque ahora tiene algunos colaboradores.
El sitio Web se ocupa básicamente de dar una información exhaustiva de todas las distribuciones de Software Libre/Open Source (FLOSS) existentes en el mundo. Y hay unos cuantos cientos de ellas. Hay una gran variedad de información y de clasificaciones atendiendo a la lengua, tipo, utilidad, componentes, arquitectura de las distribuciones etc.

Yo mismo hice una pagina en Wikipedia sobre las “Distribuciones Linux que sólamente contienen ‘Free/Libre/Open Source/software. Puedes visitarla aqui (aunque estan en proceso de finalización).

Es importante respetar que solo se incluyan aplicaciones FLOSS, por muchas razones.
Puedes encontrar mas información sobre ello aquí (). Pero baste con significar, que si se empieza a llenar una distribución Linux con software propietario, de código cerrado y software comercial caro, acabará siendo como Windows: lento, inseguro, caro, lleno de virus, programas espias, rookits y malware etc. Esto es fácil de comprender. Así que, por tu bien, y el de todos, usa Linux con programas que sean unicamente FLOSS; todos ganaremos. Intenta utilizar Distribuciones que contengan exclusivamente software Libre/Open source.
Puedo señalar que en el caso del idioma español hay algunas excelentes, como “Trisquel”, “Musix”, o “Ututo”, que contienen exclusivamente FLOSS. Si buscas una distro mas internacional, puedes usar “gNewSense”, que esta basada en “Ubuntu”, pero eliminando el software propietario, o “Trisquel”, basada también en “Ubuntu”, y que tiene incluidas varias lenguas internacionales e incluso una versión especial para empresas.
