At least, I’m sure by the time I finish this, it will be.  It’s been an eventful week since I last wrote.  Your parents came over on Friday to start work on the arbour.  We had to work out kinks in the logistics of where it would go and how to lay it out – trying to blend what was your initial vision for the project with what would work best; and by the time the others arrived on Saturday the holes were already dug, and it ended up being a pretty great day.  After a few wet days earlier in the week, the sun came out and it was rather mild – a perfect day for that kind of work.  Claude had his ‘crew’ (JP and Mike) to help get the posts level and supported, and we all worked on mixing and pouring the cement.

Even the girls got involved and had a good time, though Caia had less interest than Eibhlin and spent a fair amount of time indoors ‘supervising’ (I’ll add a few photos at the end of the letter).  I think we all could really feel your spirit there with us – laughing at some of the antics and smiling to see everyone working together on something that meant a lot to you.  I know I will be the one to benefit from the arbour, but really, it’s for you.  I said that it was like our Christmas present to you.  It won’t be finished for some time, but it’s nice to have it started.  I suppose it would be wonderfully fitting to have it finished by your birthday in the spring – though that is a way’s away yet.  It was incredible for them all to come out and help like that, and it meant a lot.

I also had a nice treat after the work in the yard – Buz had planned on a manicure and pedicure for Sian, and he figured it would be more fun if she had a friend to go along, so I got treated as well.  It was sure great to sit in the spa’s massage chairs after a day of shoveling cement, that’s for sure.  I think it was more fun to get some time to spend with Sian without chasing after kids though.  I realized it was only the second time I’ve had that done, and the last was over 7yrs ago, so I guess it was due.  After I got home though, I was feeling completely beat – I think I was dehydrated from not drinking enough while working in the yard.

On Sunday my parents took the girls to the mainland to see all my grandparents, along with some aunts and uncles, before Christmas.  I considered going, but wasn’t feeling up to it in a few ways, and opted to stay home.   I got a fair amount accomplished around the house and completed some much needed paperwork, so it was quite a productive day for me, and the girls had a great time visiting everyone.  On Monday we celebrated Sian’s birthday/solstice with dinner at their place.  Sian made a delicious meal and I made an eggnog cheesecake for dessert.  My first cheesecake.  It wasn’t properly set in the middle, but it tasted pretty good.

In the last few days I feel like I’ve just been running around like a chicken with its head cut off.  I’ve been working on finishing the (somewhat botched) homemade gifts, and I’ve tried to do a bit of actual Christmas shopping.  I hate to sound like a Grinch, because I’m honestly not trying to stamp out other people’s joy and cheer, but it’s tough to wander the isles, listening to the other shoppers happily humming along to the Christmas tunes, seeing all the extra chipper sales clerks in their santa hats cheerfully casting wishes of merry Christmas on everyone.  And rightfully so.  And I don’t wish for it to stop for others, it’s just hard to be around.  And I hardly think it would be festive if my response to the well wishes was to say, ‘Actually, my Christmas won’t be merry at all because my husband died 8 months ago’ (it probably didn’t help that it was the 8 month anniversary of your death on one of the days I was shopping).  I know I could justifiably say it, but I don’t wish to dampen anyone else’s’ Christmas spirit just because I don’t have much (it’s hard to keep the spirit up when your kids go to bed at night and cry for their Daddy to come home – it doesn’t happen every night, but it did happen just the other night).

So, instead, I walked as fast as I could, with my hat and head as low as possible and tried not to look much beyond the shelves in front of me.  Inevitably, of course, I ran into people I know – and I’m sure most of them could sense my discomfort.  I have never been one prone to anxiety before, but I could feel my heart trying to beat out of my chest almost the whole time.  It was mostly a blur.  It seemed impossible to try and keep track of whom I had already bought for (what it even was), and who was left.  I hate feeling like I’m not putting thought into it – because I am, but it’s hard to even figure out my thoughts right now.  I was fortunate that this morning Zoe offered to take the girls for a couple of hours so I could try and finish up without dragging them with me – which was a huge help (along with all the frozen meals she gave me).  I miss Christmas shopping with you.  As much as you hated it, and drove me crazy by complaining, at least we were together in it.  At least I had a partner.  Someone to discuss gift ideas with and to talk me out of/into presents for people.

As I shopped, a few more ‘fitting’ songs for my mood played, but they only served to just about bring me to tears . . .

This was followed immediately by ‘Blue Christmas’.  If ‘Wintersong’ came on next, I definitely would have bolted.  The afternoon picked up though, as Chloe and Fern came over for a visit.  Only, I felt bad as they ended up on an earlier ferry than I thought and the house was quite a mess – but at least they were able to get a hold of my mom who entertained them for a bit until I got back home.  The girls love to play with Chloe and it was so sweet of them to take the time and make the trip over.  Oh, and my mom took the girls to see ‘Santa’ – they were just going to look, but they ended up sitting on his lap.  I must admit to being disappointed that they weren’t terrified of him as in years past.  It also seems to have made Eibhlin forget most of what I had taught her about St. Nicholas (the real one) as much of the focus has now shifted to Santa and Rudolf.  I want them to have fun, I just don’t want Christmas to be ALL about Santa and presents.

I ‘sort of’ felt like I had accomplished a lot, but as I sat on the kitchen floor tonight surrounded by my purchases and home made gifts, it didn’t seem like much.  And there are so many I haven’t bought for yet.  Then I went to grab some wrapping paper and bags, only to have the first bag I picked up with last years tag that I had labeled ‘To Daddyman, Love Your Girls’ which made me smile, then cry.  I’m reminded how, immediately after Christmas last year, you told me that was probably your last.  I hated hearing you say it, but it had crossed my mind too.  I hate that you were right.  And what a difference without you this year.  A sad, lonely difference.

I’ll be going to my parents’ place, though I’m not sure if we’ll send the night Christmas Eve or not.  We had initially discussed it, as it won’t be easy waking up here without you – but part of me just wants to have a moment here for the girls and I in honour of you, before diving into the day.  As ideal as that sounds on paper, I’m sure the girls will just be too excited and I would get frustrated that it didn’t go as planned, so it’s possibly better if we just skip it – but I think, as many other things, it will have to just be a ‘game day decision’ for me.  Your extended family is having a gathering, as is mine, but I think the smaller the better this year.  I even told my mom she didn’t need to go all out for dinner – beans on toast would be fine by me – but we will be having a more traditional dinner.  There’s a tree.  Some decorations.  The stockings are up.  Even a gingerbread house.

I can’t believe it’s here.  I can’t believe you won’t be.

Florian Tonello was born in Paris, France, and grew up in a musical environment with both of his parents being musicians and music teachers. In 1998, Forian  attended the Music Conservatory (Conservatoire de Paris) to learn drums and percussion. A few years later he created the alias Fluxxx derived from one his biggest inspirations Fluxus who he also sampled in his later work. After immersing himself in the music for the majority of his life but still not having much success in Paris, Florian decided it was time to move. With the advice of a few friends and his ambitions of expanding his music to a new level, Fluxxx was off to the city of San Francisco for a fresh start.

During my second to last semester in the Graphic Design program at Sac State I had the pleasure of interviewing Florian Tonello for my magazine Duotone which is a magazine exploring San Francisco’s most thriving neighborhoods. My team was designated to Haight-Ashbury. One of my favorite places to visit when I hit up the Haight is Amoeba Records located at the end of Upper Haight. With this in mind I decided to write my article on local artists of the Haight. Amoeba’s website has a section called Homegrown which is where I first discovered Fluxxx. He was kind enough to meet up with me for an interview and photo shoot.

R: What would you  label your music as? Genre?

Fluxxx:

Electronic, composition, experimental, analog

R: Did you find out about The Haight before or after you moved to San Francisco? How did you hear abou the neighborhood?

Fluxxx:

I had only heard a little about the Hippie Movement before I moved.

R: Has the Haight influenced your music in any way?

Fluxxx:

It has opened my mind to new styles of music…at first I was really hip hop.

R: Do you mainly perform as a DJ?

Fluxxx:

All I do is perform as a DJ right now. When I am ready I will perform my music live…all I need is three more songs.

R: Do you collect Vinyl? What are your favorite record stores in the Haight?

Fluxxx:

Mainly Amoeba for everything, Groove Merchant in Lower Haight specializing in rare groove and other rare records, Rooki Ricardo who specialize in 7″ records…oldies, funky soul, and Twinkin for electro, techno, and experimental.

R: What has your experience been like with Amoeba records?

Fluxxx:

I always enjoy buying records from Amoeba because they have a large selection of music, that’s what pushed me to present them with my record and which was accepted by them it right away under their homegrown local artist program that included an add on the guardian paper and distributing my record in SF and Amoeba Berkley.  I had a very nice experience with an Amoeba team member, very good communication.

R: Would you  recommend other mucisians or people in general to reside in the Haight?

Fluxxx:

Yes. You can find pretty much anything you want here. Life is mellow here and people are friendly.

R: Who are some of your influences? Favorite musicians?

Fluxxx:

I’ve been influenced by all kinds of music, i realy like Charlie Mingus, Sun Ra, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, The Pretty Things, Silver Apple, Coxson, Lee Perry, King Tubby, Skatalites, Tommy MC Cook, Antony Red Rose, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Too Short, Ultra Magnetic MCs, Fela Kuti, Clarence Reid, Eddie Bo, Arthur Russel, Liquid Liquid, Glen Branca, Joy Division, Liars, Joe Battan, Willi Colon, Armando, Lil Louis and many others check my podcast www.radio1730.org for live eclectique music.

R: I was reading your bio on Myspace and I noticed that you released an album a while ago called the “Flying Machine”. Can you tell us about that work?

Fluxxx:

Flying machine was a hip hop instrumental album I did in paris in 2001 basicly a time travel over the hip hop age from 80’s to 2000 that I produced and distributed myself.

R: What primary equipment do you use to make your music?

Fluxxx:

I’m using analog gear, Moog Synthetizer, Roland SH101, TR 909 Drum Machine, TR 606, space echo effect, boss pedal Effectjuno 106, Micro Korg, Casiotone, mpc 1000 sampler, and electrique guitar. I record on 8 and 2 tracks reel to reel and many others instruments like percussions.

R: Where have you performed in the Haight district?

Fluxxx:

I’ve DJ’d at Mad Dog but I forgot if there was any other places. I am also planing to do something over the Peacock Lounge very soon.

R: Where do you like to hang out at night in the Haight?

Fluxxx:

I would say the Mad Dog in the fog for rocksteady, Northern Soul Nights and that pretty much it, I don’t go out that much.

R: What are your long term goals with music?

Fluxxx:

Having enough gear to record, produce my music at home, start doing more live shows, producing other records like a series of 7 inches and try to collaborate with other musicians. I actually just finished a project called the vinyl object.

Shane Moritz, a man I have never met before, despite having checked out his impressive Lester Bangs moustache on Facebook, publishing his outstanding rockwrite in The Fold, and writing alongside him for Plan B et al, just sent me a massive box of CDs from Australia to Wales, just short of Christmas. This enormous act of generosity deserves not just a blog post in which I will review in detail every single one of the CDs he posted, but the man deserves, and has now got, a category, yes, a category, on my blog. Moritz, you are a legend.

As an infant I was baptized at a Roman-Catholic church in Vienna. I attended religious education in grammar school. In high-school I stopped taking part in religious activities. Even as a child I never was a strong believer in the Christian faith. I became or always was an Atheist. Does this make me a bad person, a man without purpose or an unbalanced human being?

I do not think so. I respect other people’s faiths, even when I don’t agree with them. Difference keeps us humans together. Indifference drives us apart.

Since my roots and those of a majority of Austrians are with the Christian-Church I celebrate Christmas. I don’t pay tribute to the birth of Jesus Christ but I do commemorate the holidays.

Christmas for me is a celebration which brings family and friends together, where delightful decoration – large or small – graces houses and streets, where the spirit of giving glides through the air, where the scent of Christmas biscuits fondle your nose, where songs and carols stroke your eardrum, where either Infant Jesus or Santa Claus or some other epitome of kindness showers you with gifts.

That  was a rather long introduction for these two words:

The Christmas Song – Shayne Orok

It’s only Christmas when they start playing Christmas songs in every store. Granted, they tend to start too early for some, but in my book, you can never play them too early. I’m one of those who find nothing wrong with listening to Christmas songs year-round and in fact, I enjoy listening to “Joy To The World” in the middle of July. These artists from YT are all ones that I’ve been planning to showcase in a full feature, but they also happened to recently upload Christmas songs and they really got me into the Christmas-y mood.

Harmonies for the win! I’ve been overly obsessed with harmonies lately and this was just the fix I needed. Anyhow, listen to the words of the song. “Said the king to the people everywhere /Listen to what I say /Pray for peace people everywhere /Listen to what I say/The child, the child/Sleeping in the night/He will bring us goodness and light.” It’s basically a song about the birth of Jesus from the viewpoint of the people around him. The little lamb, the shepherd, the three wise men… Do you think that perhaps they knew that something great was about to happen. Did they know that the newborn baby lying in a barn full of animals was someone great? I have a feeling they might have had an inkling.

I’ve wished for a white Christmas for as long as I can remember. It may seem impossible to most, seeing as I do live very near to the equator. But one day I will wake to a snowy winter wonderland. I’ve been to places I’ve never been before.

I am fangirling. I am rockstargazing. And I’m loving it.

I am supposed to blog about some Top 10 for 2009 but believe me, I find it hard to list down ten most remarkable things and events that happened in my life which is not related to music, gigs, and fangirling. So, I’ve decided to make a year-end special on this alone. Maybe I’ll just try to write another blog on a more personal note. But for now, I devote this post for my fangirling adventures. How this obsession started and the rest follows…

Dinig Sana Kita at Cinemalaya. I would say that this started all the things that made my 2009 more special. July 25, 2009, Tina and I got a chance to watch “Dinig Sana Kita”, an independent film at Cinemalaya, for free (not to mention sitting around with the BIG names in the industry). Thanks to Ms. Karin Araneta who gave us the tix. That night was indeed something to remember. I’ve met my ultimate favorite band, for the first time. I honestly didn’t expect seeing them there, but fate has been on my side that night. I didn’t know it was the night I’ll be thankful of, making friends with people, that even in my dreams, I’ve never seen coming.

DEKADA: Sugarfree’s 10th Anniversary Concert. Going to a concert is something on my dream list, going to Sugarfree’s 10th anniversary concert is more than fulfillment of this dream. August 28, 2009, against all odds, I went to Greenhills all by myself to see them perform live. With fangirling buddies, Ma’am Tesha and Tina, we were able to enjoy a night of good music (not to mention front row experience) with Sugarfree and the Manila Symphony Orchestra.

A closer and more casual encounter with the guys. September 19, 2009 at Puregold Valenzuela, I had another chance to see the guys of Sugarfree. This was actually my first time to go to their gig, excluding the concert last August. A closer encounter, I got the chance to pose with each of them and have them sign my CDs and poster. Oh what a fangirl!

RockMed at CCP. October 25, 2009, one of the many benefit concerts for the typhoon survivors. I’m not really into these stuffs before, but being intimate with the OPM band scene for the past months, I’ve become active in these kinds of events. I went there for the music, I went there to help. I was lucky to be able to strike a pose with two of the Eheads men, Markus and Buddy. I must say that this RockEd event opened my mind to the reality that I should do my part in nation-building. And in my own little way, I was able to help my fellow typhoon survivors. Thanks to Ms. Gang Badoy and RockEd!

Sugarfree Visits Us at SM Marilao. November 22, 2009, Ebe, Jal, and Kaka started my birthday week with a blast. They were here for a mall show and I never let this chance pass by. Wearing our Sugarfree shirts, Ma’am Tesha, Tina, and I, headed to SM to catch the guys. As usual, we were sitting on the front row :p Jal even recognized us and greeted us on stage. But what really made this moment special was when Ebe dedicated a song for us, “Tulog Na”. I can hardly explain the feeling of hearing them play the song live for us. Thanks!

MyxMo! 2009. My birthday week is full of music. After the SM Marilao event comes November 26, 2009. A proof of how addicted I am to fangirling, I even went to MoA concert grounds on a Thursday night just to watch the best bands, with Sugarfree on the line-up of course. Thanks to Ma’am Tesha for the tickets, this is my first MyxMo! event. I really really had a blast, a night full of firsts and full of something special. Standing for hours with people from all walks of life coming together for Pinoy music, tiring but fulfilling. Ebe made my night, he made my birthday even more special by greeting me in front of the large crowd while singing OUR song, “Tulog Na”. Sweet, sweet, sweet. This band really treats me special…for that, I so love them!

Rock the Riles (Shaw Station). This is technically the second RockEd event I’ve been to, not only for this year but for my entire life. December 6, 2009 was my first time to take the MRT (nakakahiya!). I was headed to Shaw Blvd. station for Rock the Riles ‘coz I’ve heard that the best band line-up could be found here. Not only that, I came there to take part in begging for justice for the Maguindanao massacre. RockEd brings out the Pinoy in me! Moreover, the event is a major rockstargazing for me. I was able to have my pictures taken with tons of rockstars!!! What a rocking way to end this year…awww, this was my last gig for 2009. It was a blast!!!
