Alright stop! Collaborate and listen!

That’s right, I’m definitely showing my age, but for those of you who remember those ‘poetic’ words from Vanilla Ice know that they meant absolutely nothing. However, at the Web 2.0 Expo this week, they mean absolutely EVERYTHING.

This is what it’s all about, people, not the technology. Creating in a collaborative way with people we connect with, whether it be socially or professionally. Web 2.0 is the new shift that the Internet has given us, and this week at BCC we get a first-hand look at how it can benefit education, especially at our school.

Mr Lasic and a number of students have worked tirelessly to prepare something particularly special and unique – this is for everyone – a showcase of what is on offer if you only open yourself up to the possibilities that you can create via the use of Web 2.0.

So, I won’t say much more than that because we want you to get down there today – the library, media lab and LOTE room are the expo venues. We’ll see you there!

Facebook is up to it’s old tricks again. I read in Jason’s list that users are required to agree to new terms of service which flip all defaults over to public.

The issue here is that the monster legal doc that you all skip over, now has you agreeing to make all your Facebook data public by default.

Ah, Facebook. Love ‘em or leave ‘em. Happily for me, I left Facebook months ago because I’d moved way beyond mere distrust.

Quoting Jason:

So What Happens When you Clickthrough?

In this case, if you simply click through the windows you’ve exposed
all of your private Facebook information, including comments, friends,
pictures and status updates, to “everyone.” In other words clicking
through changes everything in Facebook terms–unlike every other
license or update screen you’ve experienced in your life.

…

So why is Facebook trying to trick their users?

Simple: search results.

Facebook is trying to dupe hundreds of millions of users they’ve spent
years attracting into exposing their data for Facebook’s personal
gain: pageviews. Yes, Facebook is tricking us into exposing all our
items so that those personal items get indexed in search
engines–including Facebook’s–in order to drive more traffic to
Facebook.

What is an @ Reply?
An @reply is any Twitter update that begins with @username

People say lots of things on Twitter, and sometimes you want to say something back. In fact, early Twitter folks wanted to talk to each other so badly that they started using the @+username+message to designate their message as a reply to another person.

Since people loved using it so much, we made it an official feature. You can start a tweet with @username and it will appear in the person’s replies tab. You can also reply directly from someone’s tweet: every update has a curved arrow, just click it to and we’ll automatically add @username to your next tweet. Now you can send a reply to the author of any tweet just by clicking a button!

What is a mention?
A mention is any Twitter update that contains @username in the body of the tweet.
We noticed people frequently searching for their user name (@username) to find the tweets that mention their user name anywhere in the tweet, rather than just the beginning. We’ve decided to make it easier, and include mentions under the replies tab. If you include more than one person in your update and you use the @username format, that person will also see the update in their replies tab.

Both @rk and @yahooza will see Kevin’s update in their replies tabs.

How do replies and mentions work?

All tweets containing @username are collected for you, accessible by a link in your sidebar. Click on your user name to see all replies made to you, and mentions of your user name.

Replies and mentions must use the user name in order to appear in the original person’s replies tab. All replies and mentions will appear excepting replies from people you’ve blocked.

Please note:

People will only see replies in their home time line if they are following both the sender and recipient of the update.
People with protected accounts cannot send replies to people who aren’t following them, and mentions won’t be seen by non-followers either.

My interest in this subject derives from an ah ha moment. I realized I was good at looking at founda

My interest in this subject derives from an ah ha moment. I realized I was good at looking at foundations, and the whole house, before I looked at its parts.

I wondered why we/society were spending so much money treating problems, if we could look at the root “causes” instead. This is not usually a straight line, but made so much sense to me in terms of effectiveness and scope. I wanted to start spending the dollar once.

I’m a big picture person with a big imagination. In the last year, I’ve started looking at the convergence between offline social science with online community building, collaborative models and social networking. (For the moment, I’m not focused so much on Twitter or Facebook, although they hold great interest.)

Social Networking has become a natural and evolving <b>tool</b> to use in modern community building. It can make difficult work a little easier and helps me look at how we can work together, discover best practices, democratize our voices and create more thoughtful, result driven action, more quickly.

As I walk around inside the social networking framework and sort out, deconstruct and discover the myriad ways it can help organizations, agencies, public communities, etc., I have also discovered an evolving list of challenges and concerns.

1. Effective social networks take time to run. Way more time and energy than I ever thought possible. It can be a job.

2. Participation can be problematic, difficult and frustrating. It can mirror, to some extent, offline networks and groups, where people sign up for groups and the leadership is left to a few. If the group’s purpose is compelling it’s easier.

I am puzzled as to why so many people sign up for groups and then don’t do anything. What does group leadership look like on a social network? What is the spark for getting growing groups moving? Who is responsible for these groups?

3. I can’t figure out where all these “new experts” are coming from all of a sudden. Experts in social media, community, collaboration, on and on. How can so many people be experts in such a new medium? How do we distinguish between real expertise, a little or none at all.

The issue became personally apparent to me, when a well-known person wanted me to know they were an expert at “soc med”. That’s what they called it.

When I asked questions, the knowledge wasn’t there, yet this person was starting a business for “soc med”. They are probably well-known enough to get by. This bothered me a lot.

I don’t have the guts to claim that kind of expertise.

4. Online communication has my attention, as does online conflict resolution, establishing and enforcing policies and procedures and using email as a primary vehicle for communication.

For years, I have been warned about how easy it is to misunderstand email communication. Now we rely on it in social networks. We are working with a handicap, without all our visual and communication cues.

No body language, no eye contact, no face to face dialog. How are we going to make it trustworthy and get over the inherent dangers?

Conflict can emerge instantly. Members can decide to email their friends when they are unhappy. I had one person get angry because they thought the “do-not-reply” message was my intention to not engage.

They did not understand it was a function of the software. That was hard.

5. Everything is Free. I am overwhelmed at the sense of entitlement regarding anything on the web. It’s been hard to communicate about network costs, in time and money. Is it a business or a hobby?

Should we plan for this? Do we need more conversations on this subject. Almost everyday I hear on NPR about this chronic problem – how to monetize social networks and social media. I have found myself sometimes feeling resentful of my own network! That’s weird.

6. I have everyday challenges in explaining the benefits of social networking, beyond the social. There is a clear need for access to credible, simple education and information. Information which cuts through the noise and break neck speed framing many of these new media ventures.

Who wants to feel stupid? Who wants to feel left behind? It can feel intimidating and create unnecessary barriers. People don’t usually admit what they don’t “get” in a public forum or meeting.

I’ve been told the idea of social networking in government isn’t getting the necessary traction because people don’t understand it. I’m not sure about that and want to do a better job of explaining the benefits.

If we want broader adoption and integration into our communities, which I do, I think we need to pay attention to capacity building. Always making it easier for people to be successful.

7. The generational differences of the people involved is interesting and very challenging. I never really thought about this until I felt an undercurrent of “who’s in charge”. I realized, much like being the oldest sibling, I never thought about those coming up behind me.

I was asked recently about diversity in the community and my opinion in relation to collaboration. I quickly added generational diversity to the continuum. They were surprised and hadn’t really thought about it either. Yup.

As I think about building online communities, I have to ask, “who is this for?” What is the point? What are my expectations?

8. Online community leadership can be isolating. Big job to make things work and keep things safe. I think stopping my network would be hard for me and my members. It can be a dilemma. It has become a responsibility and identified in the niche and broader community as an entity.

It’s also a ton of work. Then I think, yeah, but look at what you have learned, isn’t that worth the price of admission?

Identifying the challenges and evolving problems is part of how I creatw a solid principles of practice model. I am very interested in what other people are experiencing as they develop their networks. I think this is a big opportunity to discover new knowledge.

I’d love some comments. Are these things true in your experience? What would you add to this list and what would you challenge or take away?

Niente male!

Ecco un video interattivo dell’ iniziativa social targata Ikea:

You’ve probably heard a lot about Twitter, the white-hot microblog-cum-social-network that’s growing even faster than Facebook. Still, you’re probably either wondering what Twitter actually is, or, if you’ve already signed up, how it actually works. Good news — we’ve been spending a lot of time on Twitter lately, so we’ve compiled a list of questions and answers on how to get started, the basics of what to do once you’re there, and even a few advanced tips on how to get the most out of Twitter over time. Take a look by clicking on ‘Next’ below.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is what is known as a microblogging service, an online place where you can ‘post’ short messages, or ‘tweets‘ of 140 characters (including spaces). These ‘tweets’ can be read by anyone who is ‘following’ you (essentially, subscribing to your tweets). Similarly, you can follow (subscribe) to the tweets of anyone you want, from friends and family to favorite celebrities, publications and Web sites (like Switched, which you can ‘follow’ on Twitter by clicking here). The tweets of your followees show up in a main feed right on Twitter’s main page, one after the other in chronological order.

At its most basic, Twitter is a dedicated status updating service à la Facebook (in fact, Facebook seems to have modeled its recent upgrade on Twitter), with which you can keep people up-to-date with your life — be it what you’re doing at a particular moment in time, a link to an interesting Web site, or something as mundane as what you had for lunch.

How do I get on Twitter?

Today, there are more ways to access Twitter than there are characters in the average tweet. Most obviously, the site can be accessed via the Twitter.com Web site, which has a place for you to easily add your updates in a field at the top of a page, as well as a central feed of all the tweets by your friends and followees. There’s also a place for you to see who is following you and who you are following, a place to set up a profile, and a bank of settings (where you can set up forwarding to your cell phone, for example, so you can receive the latest tweets from anyone you choose via text message).

In addition to the main site, plenty of Web and desktop apps help recreate the Twitter experience with added features not found on Twitter.com. Tweetree, for example, previews YouTube links and images inside tweets, while Twhirl and Tweetdeck are optimized for photo uploading. Tweetdeck even helps you search and filter by topic within Twitter, which is handy if you follow more than 200 people. Mobile apps such as TwitterFon, Tweetie, and Twitterific let you read and send updates right from your phone with added features that can tell your geographical location (using your phone’s built-in GPS) and allow instant image uploading.

There’s even an app that integrates with Facebook. The Twitter Facebook application simply mirrors your Twitter updates on Facebook. In other words, update something on Twitter, and it’s automatically on your Facebook page as a status update.

What should my first steps be?

The first thing to do is sign up. Choose a username — something uniquely you, but not embarrassing. If it’s available, try to get your real name. The next step is to start following friends and family that you can find using Twitter’s contact importer, which searches your contacts on Gmail, Yahoo!, or other Web mail services for people on Twitter. If you just want to search by name, that’ll work, too. Following someone is as simple as pressing the ‘Follow’ button on their Twitter page.

Next, it’s time to create your profile. You get one image (so make it count) and 160 characters to explain who you are and what you do to the ‘Twitterverse.’ As you can see, we’re not in Facebook-land anymore.

Is my Twitter profile as important as my Facebook or MySpace profile?

While Facebook and MySpace are filled with various ways to post information, pictures, and annoying applications, Twitter is a more controlled environment — just a name, location, Web site link, 160-character bio, and a picture. Therefore, it’s all about what you say in that 160-character space, especially since people are more likely to read your whole Twitter profile than they are the hard-to-wade-through, gargantuan tomes that end up on a typical Facebook or MySpace profile. In other words, yes, your Twitter profile can get you fired, so watch what you say here (and in your tweets, for that matter).

What should I put in my tweets?

Anything you want! As a general guideline, though, tweets should be informative and pithy, and should reveal something about yourself – whether that’s a link that reveals something that interest you, or a mere, “It’s been a tough week.” Still, they shouldn’t be too direct and matter-of-fact. Make sure to inject your personality. Here are a couple of examples:

Bad: MTA Raising fares: http://tinyurl.com/cwz2f7
Better: Looks like I’m going to have to get a 2nd job just to pay for my commute: http://tinyurl.com/cwz2f7

Bad: Getting Starbucks.
Better: Is it weird that they have my coffee ready before I get to the counter at Starbucks?

In addition to links and general updates about your life, you can also post pictures using a service like the popular Twitpic. Twitter wasn’t designed for posting images, but Twitpic lets you host images, using your Twitter name (no need to register for a new service), and creates a TinyURL-style link so that you can share them via Twitter. Many Twitter apps, such as Twhirl and TwitterFon, are integrated with Twitpic, allowing you to take and/or post images without visiting the Twitpic website.

How come all the links in tweets say TinyURL? What is a TinyURL?

TinyURL is a URL-shortening service that takes a lengthy, character-hogging Web link like this:

http://www.switched.com/2009/03/17/twitter-growing-at-1-382-rate-but-do-we-all-know-how-to-use-it/

and compresses it to a much more manageable size like this:

http://tinyurl.com/cvc4q5

The new TinyURL forwards you to the original site. Twitter automatically replaces all links, above a certain length, with a TinyURL version in order to save as much of your 140 characters as possible. Just place any link into your tweet, and Twitter will convert it automatically.

How do I get someone to follow me?

Getting people to follow you is the trickiest part of being a Twitter success. We’ve posted suggestions from Digg’s Kevin Rose, and Julia Angwin of the Wall Street Journal, but building a base of followers is as simple (or difficult) as providing interesting content. Whether it’s being funny or creative, or just posting lots of links that people find interesting, the ways to get people to follow you mostly have to do with the quality of your tweets. In other words, say something funny or original. If you don’t have anything original to say, post a link to something original (a funny video or picture, or an interesting article). And, as we mentioned before, get that beautiful personality of yours in there!

What if I don’t want someone to follow me?

People can start following you by clicking on a button, but sometimes we don’t want certain folks reading about the minutiae of our daily lives. So, if, for some reason, you really don’t want someone to follow you, you can block them by visiting their Twitter page and clicking on the the “Block (username)” link on the right-hand side.

Can I respond directly to someone’s tweet? What’s the difference between an @reply and a direct message?

You can respond to people one of two ways: with direct messages, which are private, 140-character exchanges, or with @replies, which are publicly viewable. You can send a ‘@reply’ by simply adding the ‘@’ symbol and the particular user’s name to the beginning of your message (example: “@switched: I really liked that article on Twitter!”). These @replies are ideal for furthering a public dialogue. On the other hand, direct messages, which you can send by clicking ‘Direct Messages’ in the Web site’s right-hand bar (or by preceding a text message with ‘d’ and the user name), are better for things you want to say to an individual, rather than the whole ‘Twitterverse.’

Can I respond directly to someone’s tweet?
Is Twitter secure?

Twitter is just as secure as any other Web site. So no need to be overly paranoid that someone is going to hack into your Twitter account. But be careful, nonetheless. Spammers, hackers and viruses have infiltrated the system before, either by hacking into existing accounts or by creating new ones, and are constantly posting links to malicious Web sites. If someone you’re following starts acting strangely, repeatedly posting the same link with an offer for a free something-or-another, don’t follow that link (while you’re at it, un-follow them). Also, be smart about what you post. A home address, personal phone number, or Social Security number should never ever be posted on Twitter… but the same goes for any other social networking site, as well.

What should I not do on Twitter?

Much like any form of conversation, there are things you should do on Twitter and things you should refrain from doing. First up, don’t tweet everything you think; sure, it might be funny to write about your refrigerator being empty once or twice, but we can’t think of too many people, even friends and family, interested in those types of messages. Take some advice from Wall Street Journal reporter Julia Angwin; take the time to self-edit your posts before hitting send, instead of blasting out everything on your mind. Also, take it easy with the twittering and try not to get obsessed. Otherwise, you might end up breaking up relationships like John Mayer.

If you start having a conversation with someone by using @replies, we recommend taking it to IM or e-mail, or (GASP!) face-to-face. Twitter is great for sharing thoughts and links, but doesn’t work so well as a medium for one-on-one conversations. Much like Facebook and other social networks, Twitter can only be so useful if you add tons of friends. Sure, there are probably some social marketing extraordinaires (don’t label yourself that) out there following 20,000 friends, but we recommend keeping your following list small; we’ve found a well-curated 200 to be a sweet spot, but your results may vary.

hat else can I use Twitter for?

Twitter is great for posting the daily ins and outs of your life, and keeping up with your comedian friends’ (or actual comedians’) ramblings, but Twitter really shows its usefulness when you venture beyond the basic messaging functionality. Dan York has detailed how to use Twitter as a “virtual water cooler” (for those of us who don’t spend most of their days in an actual office), how to draw on the Twitter masses as a source of information (such as how to fix a broken gadget or the best places for sushi in Las Vegas), and how to use it to stay on top of current events (like the Presidential Inauguration or the Oscars).

We’ve also seen how Twitter can be a source of breaking news. If you’re on the Twitter Web site, you can use keywords in the search field at the top to find real-time results and trends. You can search by tweeting with ‘#tags.’ Essentially, you add the ‘#’ symbol in front of a keyword topic and send it out (for example, “#WBC,” if you’re looking for info on the World Baseball Classic) and you’ll get a list of all the tweets that match that tag (it’s also a great way to categorize your own tweets on a subject). While you can use the search box to look for the occurrence of words in someone’s tweet, #tags are better for quickly categorizing updates, tracking a topic, and finding new people to follow. For that reason, we suggest using them in your own tweets.

You can also use tools like TwitterFall or Tweetdeck to automatically watch for certain tags or trends. This means that you don’t have to luck into an update and can instead get up-to-the-minute tweets about any topic you want. You can also get updates from traditional news sources like CNN or the BBC. This is really just scratching the surface. Twitter can also trackpackages, set alarms, and even let you keep a to-do list. You can even plan a trip to Londonwith it.

Not-for-Profits are constantly searching ways to affiliate with businesses to participate in their cause. Some of the more significant partnerships between NFP’s and corporations were profiled in the book Powers for Good.

But it is increasingly the case that private business ought to be looking to NFP’s, causes, or projects, that allow them to position their company as one that benefits the community and the world beyond simply running a good business. Customers are looking for opportunities to feel good about their buying decisions, that go beyond “does the product satisfy a utilitarian need,” or provide a satisfying experience. In fact, customers are beginning to ask questions of businesses as to the source of their products: were they embracing of human rights, ethical treatment of animals, embracing free trade practices, recyclable, sustainably harvested, organically farmed?, etc.

The issues become more than organic, recyclable, sustainable, or economically just, but have begun to move toward pro-actively contributing to the betterment of society and the world. We have moved beyond “do no harm,” and moved toward “do good,” “make reparations,” “empower those that otherwise may never have a chance.” Communities such as San Francisco and Berkeley used to be the mavericks, when it came to legislation requiring businesses to include elements of social responsibility in their business models, but today, more and more communities are insisting on quality protections, such as pesticide-free, free-range, no animal testing, no child labor, fair trade, living wage, etc.

To many small business owners, these issues raise the prospects of raising their costs, without seeing a corresponding growth in their business model. But, I submit, this is short-sighted on the part of those business owners.

Today, there are a number of models available to be emulated in the world of proactive businesses. Some of these businesses have found ways to exploit new markets, while empowering the members of those markets to achieve new heights of prosperity, at the same time, bringing greater product diversity, and a greater sense of self-worth to those same customers.

So, the pressure is on. It is time to lead the charge rather than fall farther behind, taking up the rear. That is what “In Business for Good” is about.

“zoom ottico iper-potente (x8), dispositivo integrato“

TEFL International: www.tefllife.com

Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is a fantastic way to travel and get paid to do so. TEFL International is a non-profit international training organization, creating intercultural opportunities for our customers through various services including, but not limited to: teacher education, language training, camps, internships, and much more. This organization offers a number of volunteer projects and internships that can be accepted for credit at Marylhurst!

Why teach abroad?

This work allows one to experience cultures and learn languages at locations from Prague to Tokyo. One has the opportunity to establish friendships around the world. This work is also stable. In the age of the internet, English is necessary for business and academia. Because of this, there are always jobs available for TEFL teachers. Teaching children and adults how to express themselves in English, and thereby helping them to achieve what they would not be able to otherwise, makes TEFL teachers respected all over the world.

Get Paid or Get Credit:

For undergarduate students, Service-Learning is an option. Travel to Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal or India and TEFL will work with you to get full-time status (12+ credits) as you are trained as an English teacher and volunteer in a school that cannot afford a native English-speaking teacher. Come back with your incredible memories, great addition to your resume and money. Depending upon your university policy, the cost of this program may be less than a term at home.

If you’ve graduated and you are interested in professional or volunteer positions, with 27 worldwide locations and lifetime job placement assistance, there is sure to be something that strikes you! With courses starting at just $1,590 including housing and salaries that can allow you to save up to $3,000 per month (depending upon the location), you may be able to start a new chapter of your life abroad.

What do TEFL International teachers have to say?

Student and teacher feedback is not only welcomed, it is mandatory. One’s impressions on the training courses and entire TEFL International experience are recorded and posted on www.tefllife.com, unedited and uncesored. Open honesty and interaction have been this organization’s watchword from the start.

Who can I contact if I have questions?

Derek and Indy States are Career Placement Counselors ready to answer your questions and provide any assistance necessary in the process of becoming a TEFL International teacher.

We use the gossip and chatter from the real-time web (Twitter, Social Media, Blogs) to determine the up-to-the-minute meaning of your search. Our search results reflect this zeitgeist.

“Experiencing an installation should vary in case the spectator moved 4 or 5 steps from where he is standing originally. (…) In my installations I don’t see where the end of narration in the images on the screen. Narration can exist even at a physical level, just like electric impulses flow into an image. Every inch of the architecture is a part of the narration”.

In a Oct. 13 article written in the Telegraph, the question is posed: Is social media bad for our children?

There are a lot of questions that have been brought up with the emergence and popularity of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, and MySpace, but this is the first time I have seen this question raised. It is a good one. And it is not just for kids. Do social networking sites make me more social or less?

For our younger generation, let’s ask it this way: By allowing children to hole up in their rooms and “play” with their “virtual” friends, do parents do their children a disservice for future interaction? Say you are a pimply, clumsy teenager. Is it better for you to avoid the anxiety and abuse that comes with being an average or less than popular student by NOT engaging with peers face-to-face? I think for most of us, we are defined in large part to how we spent our middle and high school years, for better or for worse.

The Telegraph article revolves around a discussion group among parents and technology and sociology experts One of the parents was Stanley Kirk Burrell, more popularly known as MC Hammer, who has six children. In my opinion, he hits the nail on the head: “Social media is the rock ‘n’ roll of the early 21st century.” That is pretty insightful. (Almost as much as his 1988 hit U Can’t Touch This). For those old enough, let’s rewind to 1984 and ask our parents if they thought Madonna’s Like a Virgin or Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take It were bad for us. Those hits, among other classic 80’s songs, probably got enough parents questioning the tastes of their children and the direction they were headed.

As Chris Anderson discusses in the The Long Tail, the music industry is not producing the hits anymore. He gives several reasons for this, but another one of those reasons could be more directly related to Burrell’s charge: kids just aren’t that interested in music as they were before. What they are interested in is instant messaging, texting, playing video games, and producing machinima.

This brings up my final question regarding the topic: Is America’s child obesity problem directly related to the amount of time they spend online? When we got our Atari in 1980, it was hard to keep me away from smashing record scores in Space Invaders, Pong, and Pitfall. I was addicted. But I knew when my Dad came home from work that I had to ditch the indoor games and get outside or I’d get in trouble. (I think the REAL reason he didn’t want me to spend all the time on the Atari was less for my health than to keep me from embarrassing him when we played one another – didn’t work.) Since Atari and home video games, the obesity rates for children have tripled. At least with Atari, if you had to play against someone, you had to do it next to one another. “In your face, Jimbo!” “Pass the chips.”

Regardless of whether or not you think social networking is good or bad for kids, it is something to think about. My daughter of three months is not quite at the Storm Peaks level in World of Warcraft, but I’ll already be thinking about this as she grows up. How much is too much?
