I knew he was someone that was dedicated to building a winning program and I wanted nothing more than to be a part of that family. I also chose Lehigh because of their high academic reputation and strong business school.”

Hawks garnering All-America accolades during their high school careers and Hess was a member of a Deerfield Academy team that ranked tenth in the nation a season ago. Hopper comes to Lehigh after earning honorable mention All-State accolades in New Jersey, while Molnar earned All-America and Orange County Player of the Year honors last season.

With a large roster consisting of a good deal of returning experience, as well as an exciting group of newcomers the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team is looking forward to the 2010 season. Third-year head coach Kevin Cassese continues to mold the Mountain Hawks into a fast-paced, physical unit that can compete with any team it faces and last year the former Duke All-American proved just that in leading the Brown and White to a pair of road upsets versus nationally ranked foes in back-to-back contests. With a large majority of its offensive contributors returning and solid pieces throughout the defense coming back, Lehigh is poised to make more headlines in 2010.
Lehigh scored nearly 40 more goals in 2009 than it did the previous season, and Cassese would like to see the Mountain Hawks offense continue that type of growth in 2010. Despite losing Ricky Cornetta, who ranked tenth in the nation last season in points per game, and Max Dahlem who totaled 20 points and was the leader of the offense, Lehigh returns a very strong group of attackmen that Cassese will work with to put increased numbers on the scoreboard. Senior Brian Bienemann leads the group after being shifted from midfield during the off-season. Bienemann is Lehigh’s leading returning scorer after posting totals of 21 goals and six assists a season ago.

Classmates Taylor Castagna, Chris Lubin, and John Henry McNierney give the Mountain Hawks a strong senior contingent of attackmen for Cassese to lean upon. Castagna missed all of last year with an injury but impressed the coaching staff during the fall season and individual workouts with his progress. Lubin showed he is a more than capable scorer last season with 14 goals and two assists, while McNierney has appeared in over 20 games throughout his career and scored five goals during that time. Another senior, Max Copelan, missed the 2009 season and will unfortunately once again miss the upcoming season due to injury, but he was voted a captain by his teammates, indicating the level of trust and respect they have towards him.

Other members of the attack include sophomores Adam Johnston and Kevin Donovan. Johnston made quite a splash last year for the Mountain Hawks, appearing in all 15 games and scoring 15 goals to go along with five assists and 29 ground balls. Now a year older and stronger, this Maryland native will be asked to take on an even larger role within the offense. Donovan appeared in eight games as a freshman and scored one goal.

The newest members of the Lehigh attack include Alex Drake, Dante Fantoni, and Kyle Stiefel. Drake, a high school All-American and the 2009 Ohio Player of the Year, and Fantoni, an All-League selection at St. Anthony’s High School in New York, had strong fall seasons and will be given a chance to contribute right from the start, while Stiefel scored 45 goals last season while earning All-Mid-Atlantic Prep honors at the Peddie School.

The Mountain Hawks return a large group of midfielders that saw plenty of time in 2009 as well as a talented group of newcomers who will be looked upon to make an impact. Seniors Kyle Gentile, Andrew Horgan, and Chris Linko lead the group with Gentile appearing in all 15 games a season ago and contributing three goals, 24 ground balls and 17 face-off wins. Linko saw time in 14 games in 2009 and totaled three points and six ground balls, while Horgan will look to make a push for increased playing time in his senior season.

Juniors Will Scudder, Jonathan Stumpf, Dustin Clark, Tom Hueber, and Chris Ryan, along with sophomores Cameron Lao-Gosney, Roman Lao-Gosney, Trevor Stapleton, Matt Fullam, and Dana Frye comprise the remaining members of the upperclass midfielders. Scudder returns as the Mountain Hawks’ top face-off man after winning 56% last year, good for 17th best in America. Stumpf sat last season out but made quite an impact as a freshman when he started 12 games, scored ten goals and earned a Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor. His return should help bolster Lehigh’s offense. Clark has appeared in 25 games during the last two seasons and totaled six points during that time, while Hueber has seen limited time during his first two seasons in the Brown and White but is expected to make a push this year. Ryan transferred to Lehigh from the University of Pittsburgh and will add more depth in the midfield.

Cameron Lao-Gosney got his career off to a fast start as he appeared in 15 games as a freshman, starting nine along the way. His best game came in Lehigh’s upset of Army when he scored five goals, including the game-winner in overtime. For his efforts, Lao-Gosney was chosen as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, and following the season Inside Lacrosse named him one of the nation’s top-20 freshmen. Roman Lao-Gosney battled injuries in his first season, but did manage to appear in nine games and total five points in those contests, and Stapleton started two games for the Mountain Hawks as a freshman, picking up five ground balls and causing five turnovers in that time. Frye appeared in six games in 2009, while Fullam did not play last season due to injury.

The freshmen midfielders are a large and talented group that includes Derek Bogorowski, David DiMaria, Carlton Fisher, Brian Hess, Bryan Hopper, Noah Molnar, Devin Pullara, Chris Rinaldi and Ryan Snyder. Bogorowski was an All-State selection in high school where he helped lead LaSalle College High School to a pair of state championships. DiMaria and Fisher may also see time at attack, with both of the newest Mountain Hawks garnering All-America accolades during their high school careers and Hess was a member of a Deerfield Academy team that ranked tenth in the nation a season ago. Hopper comes to Lehigh after earning honorable mention All-State accolades in New Jersey, while Molnar earned All-America and Orange County Player of the Year honors last season. Pullara was a First-Team All-State face-off specialist at Arapahoe High School in Colorado and Rinaldi and Snyder were four and three year letterwinners, respectively, in high school.

Assistant coaches Taylor Wray and Brendan Callahan will once again mentor the Lehigh defense in 2010. Wray is a member of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League, while Callahan is a former NCAA save percentage champion from Stony Brook University. That pair will look to senior captain Evan Guerrero, a 2009 All-Patriot League selection, to anchor the Mountain Hawks defense. A native of California, Guerrero has started every game the last two seasons and last year he scooped up 42 ground balls and caused 39 turnovers, including a career-best nine in the opener versus Saint Joseph’s. Playing alongside Guerrero is fellow captain, junior Richard Bradley. Bradley has been a mainstay on the Lehigh “D” since his freshman year and last season he totaled 31 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers and also won 6-of-14 face-offs.

Other returners on defense are juniors Ryan Brown and Chris Rhodes and sophomores Blaise Fullen and Gaige Flint. Brown appeared in 11 games in 2009, scooping up ten ground balls in that time, while Rhodes has played in 13 games during his first two seasons, with four starts during that time. Fullen had a strong freshman campaign for the Brown and White, starting 11 games and scoring one goal, and Flint will look to make an impact in 2010.

Rounding out the defenders for Lehigh is a large and talented group of freshmen that consists of Nathan Hunt, Ben Kelley, Baxter Lanius, Mike Noone, and Kyle Sheridan. Hunt was a four year starter in high school as well as a four time All-Conference selection, while Kelley was also a four year starter and a First-Team All-State honoree. Lanius comes to Lehigh from Lawrenceville, New York where he helped lead his high school to a 34-3 record during his career and Noone was ranked as one of the top-30 defensemen by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. Sheridan started all four years at Smithtown East High School and earned All-League and All-County accolades during that time.

At the goal keeper position Cassese has four players to choose from, including junior Morgan Haller, and sophomore Conor Murphy, as well as freshmen Dan Carr and Griffin Farha. Callahan will work closely with the four Mountain Hawks as the competition for playing time promises to be fierce. Haller started for the majority of the 2009 season, recording 85 saves and scooping up 24 ground balls, while Murphy appeared in nine games, and started six, sending back 56 shots during that time. Carr comes to Lehigh from Penn Charter High School where he posted a 71% save percentage as a senior and sent back 461 shots during his career. Farha meanwhile started for three years at Winston Churchill High School in Maryland and earned team MVP honors as a senior.

Lehigh will open its 2010 season on Saturday, February 13 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on the Saint Joseph’s Hawks. The opening face-off is set for 1:00.

We’re told, daily, how the Internet has transformed business for the better – streamlining processes

We’re told, daily, how the Internet has transformed business for the better – streamlining processes, enhancing communications, empowering consumers… and on and on.

There is, however, a downside.

In my far from humble opinion, the Internet has contributed, directly, to a rapid decline in linguistic standards, accuracy, care… and, dare I say it, even creativity: a consequence of the tendency among many agencies to employ interactivity for its own sake – often at the expense of usability.

With 80% – 90% of our own work coming from ‘online’ (we write more websites and emails than direct mail, brochures, case studies and annual reports combined) we are probably no less guilty.

Though my colleagues and I pride ourselves on our ‘old school’ professionalism, we are constantly called upon to compromise our principles to meet ever more demanding (almost invariably arbitrary) deadlines.

By accelerating the pace of business life to near breaking point – and by eliminating the time zone issues which previously allowed international firms like ours at least a modicum of time to draw breath – the wide adoption of the web means we now value speed and economy about all things.

In the heady pre-Google, pre-Odesk days, we had time – between the creation of Draft One and the Final Presentation – to let the subconscious work its magic: to add that ‘certain something’ which can make all the difference, in terms of the communication itself and the results it delivers.

But nowadays – with deadlines marked on watches rather than calendars – quality is simply bound to suffer.

Most saddening is the fact that – in the drive towards instant gratification – no one seems to notice.

Or care.

Who is my audience and what do they want to know about? When beginning your website project, start w

Who is my audience and what do they want to know about? When beginning your website project, start with what’s most important - your clients and prospects. Many times copmanies become tangled in what they want or feeling the need to “puke” on their site about how great they are. While some of this may be important to convey, everyone wants to know “what’s in it for me”. If you gear everything from the visitor’s perspective, your site will succeed.

What is the purpose of the site? If it is to generate sales, your site will be different than if the goal is to position your company as experts in your field. If you plan to use e-mail marketing in tandem with your site, knowing this in the planning phase will make everything proceed as it should. The more information you can give your web designer, the better your site will be in the first revision.

What image do you want the site to convey? A close relative of #2, websites are all about image. And that image must be consistent. Pick a theme and pictures that reflect your firm honestly and stick with it. If you don’t love the way your site looks today, you’re not going to love it more tomorrow. Your collateral material should also reflect the same image. As long as it’s a good image, your clients and prospects won’t mind having it burned into their brains.

What do you like or hate about your competitors’ or clients’ websites? Spend some time looking around at what else is out there. It will become crystal clear what constitutes good or bad design. Try navigating 4 or 5 sites as if you were a prospective client considering using that company. If the website leaves you cold or you continually see the same, overused mission statements or terminology, chances are you won’t make the same mistakes on your firm’s site.

Copywriting. One thing most often overlooked in launching a new website is the copy. Before you set foot into the design piece, you should determine who will be writing the copy – as well as what kind of tone it will have. Copy is so very important but that being said, less is more with the web. We have reigned in a large amount of business owners who want to tell the entire world everything they know. The web is not the place for that. A dissertation is. Use discretion with your words and pretend that each word costs money to use.

Scalability. This is especially important for sites on a budget. Make sure your site is built with growth in mind. The design should allow for additional pages as needed.

Data collection. If a purpose of your site is to collect information, it may be important to have a database-driven website. In laymen’s terms, a “static” website is one that has no database. If you plan to publish a lot of articles, allow clients to register for seminars, or post a lot of dynamic content on your site, a database may be necessary. By outlining your desires for your site upfront, you will avoid any last minute pricing scares.

Planning. Perhaps the most overlooked and undervalued piece of a website. By scheduling content and maintenance, you will ensure your website is always up-to-date, fresh, and interesting. This is especially crucial for launching an e-mail marketing campaign. Without a calendar and accountability, the site updates will fall to the bottom of your very long to-do list.

Search Engine Optimization. At the risk of angering SEO vendors, a great place to start with SEO is to simply keep your site updated. The more updates you do, and the more valuable the information your site has on it, the higher your site will rise in search rankings. Additionally, encouraging your clients or community partners to link to your site will help increase your rank. As your site and company grows, SEO will become more affordable.

I was mindlessly going through Facebook when one of my friend initiated the Facebook Chat. Talking a

I was mindlessly going through Facebook when one of my friend initiated the Facebook Chat.

Talking about Facebook, what’s up with all those changes? Since I joined in November 2006, I think I lived through 100 to 300 changes within 3 years. That’s a lot change for a social networking site.

It’s like watching a person going under the knife numerous times.

The new Facebook site is just horrendous. Please, just… go back to the old design. It was working fine and was so simple to use and easy to navigate.

Anyway, back to the Facebook Chat.

My friend said a quick hello and told me to check out this awesome site.

Since my friend is a technie wizz and always introduce me to all these cool sites that I’ve never heard before, I decided to check out his newest “find”.

And it was awesome. And addictive.

This is the website:

JamLegend

(Picture taken from Lowpitchblog!)

It is essentially like Guitar Hero, on your PC/laptop.

How fucking awesome is that?

The site has been out since mid-2009 but the first stable version has been out in November 2009. So it is still a relatively new site.

Or maybe I’m just a hermit.

But boy, when I discovered it, it’s like my first time discovering the high of ahem, cough, you want some?… the first time.

Moving on.

This is the wiki explaining more about JamLegend.

I think there are about 690 over songs. I have been playing a lot and most of the songs I have encountered are alternative, rock or metal. But with the wide range of songs, I’m sure there will be some that fit your genre.

Or.

You can upload your own song into your song library and play it on JamLegend. Of course, in order to upload your songs, you’ll need to sign up and signing up is free. Basic membership, that is.

I uploaded Lily Allen’s Fuck You.

Eh.

And if you are an up-or-coming artist or band, you can create a profile for your band (like MySpace long time ago) and upload your songs. In that way, you can introduce your songs to the Internet and your fans in a fun, interactive way with free (somewhat) publicity.

What I like about JamLegend is that beside letting me destroy some riffs, I get to listen to songs by new artists or bands. And they are awesome songs.

My first song I encountered was this:

Yeah, a Lady Gaga remix.

Second song I encountered was this. Actually, this band is rather awesome.

The quality is rather crappy. Below is a video with better quality:

That is JamLegend. The guy is playing at Legendary difficulty level, without the strumming part. Yep, you can strum too. Just hit the “Enter” button repeatedly.

Another song I came across in JamLegend:

Frankly, I prefer her to Taylor Swift.

And another song I played on JamLegend. The guy gives a short explanation on how to play JamLegend at the beginning:

The song would have been better if he didn’t miss any notes. But at least he still can kick my ass anytime.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up and go play JamLegend. Just don’t blame me when you get sidetrack from your schoolwork or develop carpal tunnel syndrome.

Before you sign up, become my managed talents.

That way, I get to earn a percentage of every XP you get. Just like a true music manager.

Fuck, now I’m going to be behind my readings for the reading challenge.

Fuck me.

Oh, fuck it.

Ever wanted to star in the muppets? Chances are, this is a close as you’ll get (yes, you’ll need to enter a little bit of data, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience we’re talking about).

Ok so it doesn’t actually make you a muppet. Which would be awesome. But in all my childhood I never dared to dreamed I’d have my name on the lips of Kermit and Miss Piggy.

It feels like they could have had a bit more fun with the personalisation, but it’s pretty cool nonetheless. After all, what sort of a sociopath doesn’t have a soft spot for the muppets?
