Ok. So, the BombFlow kayak team, a kind of anti-establishment whitewater kayak collective, are pushing the sport to somewhere it’s never been. Hands down, the BF team is the best out there. And they are making some excellently edited and filmed videos of their exploits—for free! If you go over to Bombflow.com, you can check out all their episodes. I know the majority of people haven’t experienced whitewater before, but let me explain something to you: what the BombFlow guys are doing is INSANE! Completely nuts. In the river there are so many variables and the hardest part is reading the river and maintaining your line. These guys are routinely hitting 80+ waterfalls and executing must-do maneuvers like it’s their job—which it is. They’ve also been putting some excellent tunes in their videos. Check out the A.Skillz remix of Marlena Shaws’ song “California Soul”, it’s an energy packed remix of the old school jazz singers’ classic.

Les Loups: In search of smooth disco/funk sound, Les Loups realized that a 3-piece suits them best. This German trio hailing from Hannover has captivated me recently with a style that can always put a smile on my face.

Les Loups – Perfect Situation

DJ EQ: I know very little about this producer other than the fact that he makes amazing music. I believe he is based out of Philly which would make sense as that city has recently been displaying its ability to churn out great artists across the broad spectrum of music.

DJ EQ – Life in Space

Cézaire: Again, relatively little information about this artist is available except for the fact that he’s from Paris, but that, in and of itself, is a reason to give him a listen.

Cézaire – Funky Style

Cherokee: Another French electronic duo that is simply killing it. The group was formed earlier this year and has since put out a few songs, all of them worth listening to.

Cherokee – Mambo Jet

Alexandre Louvré: (Warning: Not from France) The name might throw you a little, but this 19 year old from Mexico City definitely appreciates the “French touch” and demonstrates this understanding in every one of his songs.

D-Funk: A Sydney-based producer/DJ, D-Funk has been around for years, toured all over the world, and released well over 50 tracks. With more and more quality music coming from down-under, I have a feeling like Mr. Masters will soon be receiving the credit he deserves.

Electro:

The Digital Monkey: Matthew Johnson has been making music for close to a year now and has carved out a niche in the category of progressive electro-house. Hopefully we’ll see more from this UK-based producer in the coming months.

Icy Lions: This American duo has accomplished something I thought impossible: finishing a quality EP while each member lives on an opposite side of the country. The Clave: The Brazilians have Electro figured out. That much is clear. The Clave have decided to take this knowledge then blend it with dubstep and fidget to create a hard-hitting style that is similar, but ultimately unique when compared to other Brazilian artists.

A.Skillz: From the moment I heard his remix of California Soul, I knew that Adam Mills was the man. It doesn’t hurt that this Londoner also works often with the Funkytown supported Nick Thayer, so do yourself a favor and check out their collaborations.

Wolf Gang: (No not Gartner) Max makes straight pop music, but hot damn is it enjoyable to listen to. The Magician released a remix of this track, but in my opinion the original is perfect as is.

I’ve mixed feelings about autumn. On one hand it’s the most atmospheric season, calm (once the violent winds have abated) and colourful, trees taking on fiery hues, before dumping their load everywhere. It’s also a  sad time. Death is sad. Everything that can is either flying away to warmer climes or finding a big warm hole to bury itself into, while all around everything is shrivelling up, dropping off, or curling up. In one final burst of colour, we’re left to contemplate the dark and cold of winter, wrapped up, pale and ill looking, watching the birds migrating, shaking an angry, futile fist and cursing any lack of proper summer and impending Christmas to come…

Finally one of the tracks of the year has been released! Ever since I heard this remix of  Marlena Shaw’s ‘California Soul’ by A Skillz, I’ve wanted a copy. The one minute of so rip on Soundcloud wasn’t cutting it and I’d resorted to hassling A Skillz himself and I really don’t tend to hassle anyone about anything, as a rule.

Anyway, looks like a lot of other people were doing the same thing and the man has relented, giving away the remix for FREE. Download quickly, before it reaches the limit. You need this tune in your life!

Marlena Shaw – California Soul (A Skillz Remix)

Mid-tempo breaks seem appropriate to write about since I’m going to see A Skillz on Saturday at Refuge here in Portland. Nobody does it quite like Japlapeno Records, in my humble opinion.

Nu Funk in and of itself is a fun genre many people don’t know about. I just finished a long playlist of Curtis Mayfield on my Zune, and I have to say, the sound is not only still alive, but also evolved.

A bit about Nu-Funk: (Wiki Quote)
Nu-funk originated in Brooklyn in the 1980s. The music was slow, riff-oriented and danceable. Listeners would often dance and “jive” during the riffs.

Unlike original funk that was primarily US-based, nu funk is a worldwide phenomenon. Most notable bands such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra and The New Mastersounds come from the UK. Other countries are also well represented with bands like The Poets of Rhythm from Germany and The Bamboos from Australia. Since the late 2000s however, the Nu-Funk sound has adapted influences from Hip-Hop, Funky Breaks, Dubstep and Big Beatand became a more diverse sample-based form of music but keeping with the funk motif. This style of Nu-Funk has been popularised by the likes of Featurecast and A Skillz, and is usually played around 100-120 BPM. A notable label of this kind of Nu-Funk is the GoodGroove Records label in Bath, UK.

Jalapeno Records selections of Hip hop inspired Nu Funk and mid-tempo breaks have been some of my favorite grooves. Let me share some of my favs:
