I already clued you all in on the fact that we’re having some brilliant black metal tours coming to the Twin Cities this summer, but now things are just getting ridiculous. This week, the announcement was made that the visionary BM minds of Wolves in the Throne Room and Krallice would join together in what is sure to be THE “must-see” underground metal tour to pass through Minneapolis this spring. On May 15th, Wolves in the Throne Room will be playing at the Triple Rock Social Club with Krallice supporting. While I’ve already mentioned the scathing-yet-epic majesty that is WITTR on the site, Krallice is a band that has not gotten enough attention from me so far (besides the one sentence I gave them in my end of 2008 honorable mentions list). Reading descriptions of the band, you might think that their entrancing style of progressive black metal would already have an established predecessor. However, upon hearing Krallice’s fervent, psychedelic, rampaging, technically superior sound, it doesn’t take long to pick up on the freshness of this band’s delivery. Metal has never sounded so simultaneously brutal, ferocious, and atmospheric, which is certainly saying a lot. Krallice is a underground band that is literally pushing the limits of sound. This is a band to watch out for, and the free “Wretched Wisdom” track we have linked below will show you why.

Josh Graham’s A Storm of Light has announced plans for a collaboration with the amazing post-doom/ambient noisemakers of Nadja(!!!), and they have even given us a taste of what we can expect. Go to their myspace page now to listen to “Sister”, the latest release from A Storm of Light.

This song is huge, and I really dig the Isis approach of diving right into the song that they embrace here. However, as I mentioned in my previous review, this is a band that really enjoys indulging in jamming hard on the moments where most bands lose focus.. For some reason, (from my point of view) their riffs during the quiet parts and segues are even more infected and interesting than when they crank out heavy shit during the epic parts. Whatever the case, it’s really refreshing to hear a doom band that is actually surprising and which demands my attention – rather than one that slowly drowns me to sleep with epic riffage. If A Storm of Light can continue to produce such unpredictable AND unforgiving songs, there will be no one to stop them. Really, Josh only needs to continue doing what makes him unique; eventually I could imagine this band being mentioned in the same breath alongside the “post-metal” innovators like Neurosis and Isis.

More than anyone I’ve heard in a long time, A Storm of Light sound like they have more contributions to make.

LISTEN NOW -> “Sister” (from collaboration with Nadja)

Ahhhhhhyessss….. Finally, two weeks of midterms are done with and I am free to write at the infamous mind inversion once again. So… “what should I write about this time?” – this is something that I often ask myself. With every one of these posts, I get to choose the topic; right now I feel like telling you about the best sludge metal band that I’ve heard of recently.

A Storm of Light is amazing. Blaze and listen in.

Josh Graham’s strikingly bleak outlook and unwavering artistic effort have always been the perfect visual complement to Neurosis’ likeminded visions of despair. With Red Sparowes debut release, we saw that he could translate the majestic beauty of his visual images into an aural soundtrack with ease. In A Storm of Light, we see Graham and his band of cronies charging the way in one the of the most innovative, engaging, and interesting doom metal bands in recent memory (..notice I said charging, and not plodding – this is music on a mission!). This is a band that draws influences from every aspect of life; I won’t even begin to drop band names, because that won’t even begin to do them justice. As I said, just blaze and listen in. I strongly recommend their album And We Wept the Black Ocean Within, and if you’re having a hard time finding it, hit me up privately and I’ll be glad to share.

If you aren’t convinced yet, I’ll just say that former members of Swans, Tombs, Satanized, and Unsane joined Graham to complete this band. From my point of view, ’nuff said’. This shit is massive…

…and now I’m off to see Gojira, In Flames, and 36 Crazyfists! Thank God midterms are done!

I found a new job last week so after three months of unemployment and tight budgets I was finally ready to splash out some money on records to congratulate myself. I hadn’t been to the record store in quite some time so I had a lot to catch up to, although I wasn’t really following who released what over the past half year. This is what I found today.

A Storm Of Light “And We Wept The Black Ocean Within” 2xLP
I had seen A Storm Of Light at the Neurosis show in August and I also listened to their record before but I never had a chance to buy a copy. This is a real beauty. The cover is wonderful as it is not some black and white fuzzy picture but a very colourful and distinct work with lots of details on it. The gatefold sleeve only adds to my excitement. As for the music it’s what you expect from a band which features Josh Graham on vocals and guitars (and visuals). There’s no real surprise when you listen to it and I think because of the vocals this band is rather low on the list of Mr Grahams works which include Red Sparowes or Battle Of Mice to name but a few, but I like to dive into such music and listen to it for hours and hours and the maritime atmosphere of the cover only increases this impression.

Me First & The Gimme Gimmes “Have Another Ball” LP (+CD)
Now there is absolutely no reason to buy a record like this when you are alyways on the hunt for the newest shit and don’t like bands who repeat themselves. Wrong band here. When you pick up a record by the Gimmes you know what you can expect and you won’t be disappointed. I admit I am a freak for cover versions and those guys are my absolute heroes. This is a collection from the time when their first record “Have A Ball” came out and they released an enormous amount of two-track 7″s. This record is the b-sides of those 7″s. Of course I own a few of those Singles (and I am still hunting for some others) but I just can’t pass on this. It’s always fun to listen to their music (or at least to their renditions of famous pop songs). Recently it seems that Fat Wreck tries to become even more customer friendly as this record includes a CD version as well. I also found something like that with the new LP of No Use For A Name.

Tombs “self-titled” LP
Tombs is yet another band the aforementioned Josh Graham has connections to and – believe it or not – you can definetely hear that from the music they play. This one follows the footsteps of all the bands that came before them and it delivers the sound I really dig at the moment. Slow grinding hard hitting metal influenced rock music, very atmospheric. And I always like to say that the band tries to create landscapes before the listener’s eyes with the sound the make on their record. I wonder if they also use visual effects during their live shows just as Neurosis, Red Sparowes and A Storm Of Light. It would make some sort of sense. So, yeah, there is really no surprise on this one, as it sounds slightly like the old stuff Neurosis used to do, a little rougher, a slightly harder edge than the songs they do today. I think I even sense some sort of hardcore influence in the way the vocals are recorded, but that might as well be just me and me faulty hearing. So if you dig sound like this this one’s something for you.

This Will Destroy You “self-titled” 2xLP
Now whoever had the idea for this cover should at least be punished with listening to stupid German holiday techno nonstop for one week. Give me a break, will ya? What the hell is this?! This looks like some kid who is just staring to learn the basics of Photoshop and tries to make a cover for his or her father’s coverband, who plays songs of all those country heroes of the 60’s and 70’s at class reunions or other horrible occasions no one with a clear mind wants to be at. Or one of those terrible 80’s metal bands, does anyone remember those record covers? The lightning says it all. What’s even worse is that I fear that people will just not recognize how beautiful the music is which is hidden behind this crime. Brilliant instrumental tracks in the vein of Explosions In The Sky with a little bit more punch. I really love this band since I seen them play live in Cologne a few months ago and I am really looking forward to their next concert. My oh my, I still can’t get over the cover sleeve…

Torche “self-titled” LP
Doom, doom, doom. Alright, this is slow, but it’s a lot more rocking than other bands from this genre. Seems like Torche deliver a whole variety of hard ‘n’ heavy sounds, sometimes it’s just pure slow mosh, sometimes it can even get highly melodic with fine and clear guitar leads. To me this record is somewhere in between Cave-In’s “Antenna” masterpiece and the slow and heavy sounds of bands like Pelican (with whom they will play a show in Cologne in October). It’s not something I will be able to listen to nonstop for a long time but this record has the feeling as if I can put it on my record player any time and enjoy it just as I am doing it right now while listening to it.

The Gaslight Anthem “Senor & The Queen” 10″
I had this one for quite some time now but somehow it slipped under my radar for a review so I will write something about it now. I bought this at their show in Cologne in June and therefore this was new stuff for me as I didn’t know the new record back then. Let’s face it, it’s what you’d expect from the Jersey boys. Great rock ‘n’ roll influenced punkrock which lets you dream of youth, first kisses, freedom and all the stuff you did when you were young. The ever apparent comparison to the boss, Bruce Springsteen won’t be missing here as I have to say again that these guys really sound like a punkrock version of this rock dinosaur. I’d really like to see them perform at least one damn Boss song once. But they are such a shy bunch, I guess I will have to wait forever. Four tracks on this little gem and titles like “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts” live up to their promise. Great band, great songs, great record, must have!

Deny Everything “Speaking Treason EP” 7″
Cologne’s best dancers released this wonderful piece of music with a bang a few months ago and now I finally find the time to write a few lines about it. Ever since they burst out onto the German hardcore and punkrock scene it seems there’s nothing that can stop these guys from pushing forward. Highspeed hardcore tracks with lots of punkrocking melodies and pissed yet melodic vocals with great and thoughful lyrics. What else can you with for? There is absolutely no need to look for bands from the states when you have great acts like this one right in front of you doorstep. And with bands like Cobretti or Kingdom following in their footsteps and groups like Hit & Run shows setting up wonderful gigs the future of Cologne’s scene surely looks a little bit brighter than it did a few years ago. I wonder if I will ever be disappointed by a record Deny Everything put out? At the moment I can’t imagine something like that happening. Seven brilliant songs on this one

23/08/2008
Mamamia Music Club
Senigallia (An)

Sapevo.

The Eye Of Every Storm: Left To Wander. Stones From The Sky è il sigillo sul concerto.

This show flew a little bit under the radar as I only learned about it a few weeks ago. It has been quite some time since Neurosis went on some sort of a tour in Europe so the expectations were quite enormous. Previously the only chance to catch a glimpse of their live shows was at festivals or exclusive shows in the U.K. and I know quite a few people who especially went to those shows. I remember standing outside the venue on their last tour some years ago watching through the doors and only catching small bits and pieces of their visual effects. But I had never been the biggest fan of Neurosis. The first time I heard the name was on the “Virus 100″ compilation on Alternative Tentacles on which they contributed their version of “Saturday Night Holocaust”. It never stuck with me and so I had to take the detour via Isis to get into their sound. I guess now that I have listened to their records I know what I had been missing out on. And I know why people still think that “Souls At Zero” is considered to be their masterpiece. I wasn’t expecting the band to play any songs from that record at the show though.

The show took place at the Essigfabrik, a formar factory for vinegar, which is located on the other side of the Rhine river. I had never been there before since the venue usually hosts reggea events or huge and expensive festival shows. When we arrived there black was the colour in fashion. I felt a little bit out of place with a blue hoodie. The room it self was big, though not huge. The only problem was that it was a little too wide so people had to stand on the far ends and thereby didn’t see everything on stage. But nevermind, the bar personnel was quick and the sound was good.

Up first were Taint from the U.K., a trio lashing out rocking riffs to get the audience started for what was to follow. They were fitting in to the line up of the evening but somehow their sound was a little bit too “stoner-rocking” for me. What’s also striking is that people who play that kind of music always look a little bit like American rednecks. And we are talking about guys from Britain here. Well, I only caught two songs, so I cannot really give a full judgement, but what I was didn’t convince me.

A Storm Of Light, who were up next, is yet another band which features Josh Graham (Neurosis Visuals, Battle Of Mice, Red Sparowes, and so on) and to be honest, you can hear that from the music. Don’t get me wrong, I like all the bands I mentioned. It’s just that I have the feeling they all sound very much alike. Still there are things which set them apart. In Battle Of Mice you have female vocals, Red Sparowes is an instrumental band. And A Storm Of Light sound a bit more brutal to me. Also a trio the sem to stretch their songs to extremes, the vocals also dragging out the words as to accompany what’s being played. The also use visuals (of course) and the pictures of huge waves crashing down seemed very fitting to me while listening to the songs. The desperation and the brutality simply want you to abandon all hope of a change for the better. I really like listening to their songs live and watching the visuals, but they found their way out of their set at the right time. The difficulty with this kind of music is how to keep people interested in it and after maybe 45 minutes they were on the verge of losing it.

So it was all set for the band everybody had been waiting for. After some small intro piece the took the place apart like a slow swinging battering ram. I was talking to a friend before the start of the show and with the first chord we were completely pressed to the whole. One word? L O U D! Loud yet very distinguished, polished and brilliant. This was nearly perfect. The band themselves was simply standing on stage, it was the presence of their music which kept people nodding their head all the time. The only thing I would have like to see were the lights being turned off. They always had blue and red lights facing the audience and I believe the impact of the visuals would have been a lot stronger had the lights in the room been turned off. But nevermind, the music itself was just breathtaking. The longer the concert was going on the deeper you felt like you were being sucked into a maelstrom. The last three songs were pure mayhem and it was rather disappointing that just when they got into the great ending riff the sound was falling apart. The friend who accompanied me to the show put it quite right when he described what we just witnessed. He said it feels like a carrier approaching the harbour with noone behind the steering wheel. And accident waiting to happen, you know you should run away but you wait because you want to know what happens next.

A very good show worth all the money spent. And yesterday I found out the Pelican will play in Cologne in October so there’s another concert to look forward to. Although they didn’t convince me the last time I saw them play live. That won’t ever happen with Neurosis, I believe. Those guys can’t have a bad day. Please note that they will set up one day at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg in 2009.

Check these guys out, my brother plays bass in this band and they’re rather crushing.

Also I’ve been on a metal kick as of late with these three bands getting the most playage:

Electric Wizard (heavy sludgeified Blue Cheer meets Sab 45 played on 33 rpm under the influence of huffed rubber cement sounding medieval alchemical disasters)

Black Tide ( Metal like those longhaired dudes in ripped jeans and leather jackets used to blast at keg parties back in ‘87. Fucken-A!)

A Storm of Light (Ok, technically post-metal. Dark and atmospheric and waay off the chart on the heavy meter)

Besides the metal stuff I got the Texas is the Reason s/t today and its pretty good (though admittedly not spanky dank new), plus after adding some extra wire to my speakers earlier tonight I test drove everything with Liar by The Jesus Lizard-an old favorite I never get sick of.

So yeah, I was getting really bored with shit around here at the blog so I figured I’d blather about music for a change. I’m going to try to hit some shows this summer, hopefully I’ll be able to catch Aggro Hippie again and it would be killer to see Cave but most of the shows around here are in bars so I’ll have to see.

Tracklist:
1. Adrift
2. Vast & Endless
3. Black Ocean
4. Thunderhead
5. Undertow
6. Mass
7. Leaden Tide
8. Breach
9. Descent
10. Iron Heart
