Okay for this Throwback Friday we look at A Tribe Called Quest. they are pioneers for the smooth chill flow, and the bass and drum heeavy beats we have all come to love over the years. This is the group which is responsible for J. Dilla rising up the charts as the popular unkown producer to eff with. They have influence the hearts of many. It isn’t difficult to come across their music, but it is rather hard to come across the instrumentals, unless you cop that wax. So we bless you with a video and madd beats by the hands of the Tribe, Dilla, and various other producers who helped crafted their sound. Enjoy…and its Black Friday, and I am at work.
11. Done Did It (feat. Nicole Wray & NOE)

Mos Def and the Black Keys' guitarist Dan Auerbach

Pharoahe Monch scande de tout son soûl “if it dont make dollaz then it dont make sense” pour Dollaz & Sense.

Hey Folks !!!

This week’s Old Soul in a Young Man track comes from one of my favorite Hip-Hop producers Ski Beatz. A North Carolina native, Ski Beatz, in my opinion, is one of the hottest most overlooked producers of the 90s. Largely affiliated with Camp Lo, Ski Beatz produced a decent portion of Jay-Z ’s first official album, Reasonable Doubt. Using the classic SP 1200 to produce his tracks, Ski Beatz produces a very dirty yet smooth jazzy sound that serves as a great platter for an emcees entree. Affiliated with Roc-a-Fella’s sister company, Roc-a-Bloc Ski Beatz is the producer behind the Jay-Z classic “Dead Presidents”. Using a beautiful sample from Lonnie Liston Smith, A Garden of Peace, Ski Beatz sculpted a prime example of real Hip-Hop in his studio those many years ago. Below is the sample, the beat and a brief over view of the creation of this masterpiece. I hope You Enjoy!

“TheCity” Season 1: Part 2: Episode 8: “Forget About Boys” The world’s most improved show was

“TheCity” Season 1: Part 2: Episode 8: “Forget About Boys”

The world’s most improved show was back again last night. Let’s recap.

Whitney and Roxy make like theHills and do lunch. They discuss their animal infestation problem we’ve heard so much about. In new news, Sami is setting Whitney up on a blind date with her co-worker who works at Bergdorff. Roxy notes that he’s going to be “way more into fashion” than Whitney. They talk about the goodness of blind dates; we don’t see too much though. Soon, Whitney won’t either. Meanwhile, Roxy talks about her own date plans with Zacky poo. Roxy has a feeling something’s not right with him, but that makes her more attracted to him. Here’s to hoping these girls will be more careful with their guys than that other show out west.

We arrive at ELLE where Joe Zee tells Olivia he needs her help with styling Brookyln Decker for a photo shoot. She’s beautiful so Joe wants her in some menswear clothes because she can pull it off. They both fawn over the mention of putting a men’s watch on her. Joe notes that the very outfit Olivia is wearing would work perfectly, so Olivia will ace this challenge.

Whitney arrives at her date with a guy (Patrick) who looks like he could be Screech’s brother. Not to mention he looks like he’s 12. He proceeds to act like it as well. He comments on Whitney’s bling and berates her on anything he can find, clearly insecure that he resembles a high schooler, and a guy who made a nasty sex tape in his bathroom. He uses abbreviations like 5F (5th Floor of Bergdorff, Whitney thought it meant 5th Avenue) and LV (Louis Vuitton), and condescendingly questions Whitney in shock when she doesn’t know his lame code words.

Next, Roxy takes her stab at dating. She meets up with Zac. For the most part things go smoother than Whitney’s disastrous date, but that’s not saying much. At least Zac looks like a man. Roxy and Zac plan to meet up later and Roxy asks Zac to bring some cute guy friends for Whitney. She gives him the scoop on Whitney saying she’s really pretty- tall and blonde. Zac says no one likes tall and blonde, “this is all brunette territory”. Then they go down the wrong path and start talking about their exes. Never a good move with a new guy.

Back at MTV’s Disaster Date. Whitney and her date could honestly be on that show, easily. Whitney notices him looking down at the bill and asks him if he’s looking it over. He says yeah “it’s pretty good, you want to join forces?” Whitney laughs in disbelief and pulls out her credit card like the independent woman she is. Still, we don’t believe in “joining forces” on a first date, particularly in the lame way he did it. Call us old school. He obviously did it to show he wasn’t feeling Whitney and to end off his jerk show with the ultimate jerk move. In the end, Whitney wins because he still looks like Screech.

Then next morning Whitney and Roxy discuss their dates the night before. Roxy says her date was like Prince Charming compared to Screech. Roxy tells Whitney she has to meet Zac tonight; plus he’s bringing friends for Whitney.

Next we go to the Brooklyn Decker photo shoot with ELLE. Olivia pulls a look that Joe unsurprisingly falls in love with. It basically resembles what she has on her back. Then Erin pulls Joe to the side and before she can get a word in Joe tells Erin how great Olivia did in pulling the look. He thinks the (numerous) mistakes she made early on are a thing of the past. Erin calls BS saying she just pulled something that looks exactly like her. Erin doesn’t understand why Joe holds Olivia’s hands because no one held hers. Been here, heard this. Joe turned it around on Erin saying she needs to manage Olivia properly.

Then we get to the club and Whitney and Roxy are waiting for Zac to arrive. He arrives with five girls! Much older looking girls. Whitney’s jaw drops to the floor. He grabs a separate table and sits in the middle of the girls. The girls ask why Roxy keeps looking at them, but it doesn’t take long for Roxy to confront him. She calls him rude for bringing a ton of girls to a club Roxy invited him to. Zac says not to berate him for bringing girls to a club that he comes to anyway. We have to agree with Zac. When you’re not dating a guy officially, don’t have any expectations of him. They won’t always be met. Sure it was a jerk move (they are running rampant in this episode) but unfortunately he didn’t owe Roxy anything. She should’ve played it cool.

Then, the ELLE crew heads to Rouge Tomate on the Upper East Side. The editor-in-chief of ELLE, Robbie, is there for a quaint dinner along with Cobra Starship. The camera tries its best to make it seem like Robbie is solely enthralled with Olivia. She even asks Olivia to pull a look for her. The camera didn’t have to work hard to make Joe seem like he was.

It also didn’t have to work hard to make Erin seem upset and envious of everyone’s love of Olivia. Robbie and Joe head out, and Cobra Starship chats with Erin and Olivia. They ask Olivia what kind of music she likes and she says House and Hip Hop. They say they wouldn’t take her as that kind of gal. When they ask her if she likes “Tribe”, Olivia says “What’s Tribe?” “A Tribe Called Quest“, they inform the self-proclaimed Hip Hop fan. Olivia stares blank faced before getting up to leave. Listening to a Jay-Z song doesn’t make you a Hip Hop fan. Not saying you have to know every person to ever make Hip Hop music, but you can’t stress how big of a fan you are and not know who A Tribe Called Quest is. Olivia leaves, and Erin tells Cobra Starship why she doesn’t like Olivia. Cobra says, well “she’s a babe”.

The next day at work, Whitney and Roxy discuss Zac bringing a bunch of old has been models to the club Roxy invited him too. Kelly Cutrone says she “hates to break up the quilting circle” but asks Whitney to come in her office. She tells Whitney it’s bad enough she has to hear Roxy’s voice in her office. They need to stop talking about boys in her office because she’s trying to run a business during a recession. Plus, Whitney has responsibilities that “cooky” Roxy doesn’t have. Cue the camera showing Roxy waiving at people at her desk and totally not focused on any work.

HHHTo the Left, to the Left,

As I previously posted on the East Coast and the excellent year they’ve been having, let us not forget about their tanned and funky counterparts over on the Left.

Now, although perhaps they haven’t had as successful a run this past little while, don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re not loaded with game changers.

CROOKED I

Slaughterhouse representative. Dr. Dre approved. And one of the torchbearers for the New West. If you’ve never heard Crooked I spit, then you probably don’t listen to much rap.

Likened to a West Coast Pharoahe Monch, Crook’s versatile cadences and cutthroat wordplay made him an obvious candidate to join supergroup, Slaughterhouse. But even more importantly, he’s one of only a handful of west coast spitters that have managed to stay relevant even when the Hip-Hop spotlight has been buried deep in the south. Now, set to release a brand new mixtape as well as the launch of his new label, Dynasty Entertainment, Crook’s poised to keep his position and keep the West up.

Here’s a double dose for your listening pleasure:

CROOKED I ft. SNOOP DOGG – GUESS WHO’S BACK

CROOKED I ft. HORSE SHOE GANG & ROYCE DA 5′9″ – CYPHER

93 ‘TIL INFINITY

When the Souls of Mischief recorded 93 ’til infinity, I doubt there was any way they could’ve anticipated that in fact this prophetic song would actually live up to it’s over ambitious claims.

Now, 16 years later, I still manage to hear this song damn near every hip-hop event I go to and can’t help but love it. And well, them, as well as the entire Hieroglyphics crew are still going strong and making music strictly for the heads. Sure their popularity has died off a bit and most kids nowadays think they’re, at best, a one-hit wonder, but at the end of the day, skills is skills and they’ve got skills like a muh’.

Prepping to release their first official group album since 2000’s Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution, the Souls have enlisted the help of hip-hop innovator, 1/7 of Stetsasonic, and the man honorably known as Plug Four, Prince Paul. If you don’t know either him or Hiero, I suggest you get familiar. Now.

This morning I woke up to my new favorite channel, Centric. They were playing the Hip Hop classic “Me, Myself and I” by De La Soul. During this time in Hip Hop I loved De La, actually the whole Native Tongue Posse (De La, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, The Jungle Brothers, Prince Paul…) As I looked at the video for the first time I realized how ‘crazy’ those dudes looked. Their clothes, their hair…Wow. I had to chuckle to myself because I realized I looked JUST like them at that time. Crazy. What was I thinking?! Well, actually I was thinking “This is me and I don’t have to do the norm because I’m ME, damn it! ” Going against the grain has never been something I’ve had a problem with. I will admit that it’s not always easy to be yourself. Unusual things often scare and/or confuse folks. But even at the height of my weirdness I had homegirls and boyfriends that accepted me for me. Even back then I figured out that most of the time opinions from random people don’t matter. If the loved ones in your corner are digging you, why care about what “John Q Public” has to say? I’m not saying as long as you have people that like you it’s cool to act a-natural-ass-fool to everybody else. Haha I’m just saying that there are times when you have to unplug from the Matrix and walk your own walk.

Currently, I’m working on professional projects that requires me breaking away from the white-bread world that I’m experienced in. Honestly, I think I’m a little crazy for taking such gambles but I also know that I wasn’t on the path that I belong on. It takes a lot of strength to be yourself and follow your dreams. I’d rather face those fears than to drown in a sea “What if”.

This entry goes to the whole Native Tongue Posse and everyone else that has the courage to jump out of the box.

Hey, tell us a little information about yourself. Who are you and where are you from.

My name is John Mooty and I am a senior at the University of Minnesota. I will be graduating this spring with majors in Marketing and Entrepreneurial Management so I have been very fortunate with the alignment of what I have learned and how it applies to creating and running Airtime. Although I do not have any official schooling in design, I have been able to teach myself everything I know up to this point.

What is life like up in Minneapolis? As far as music, fashion, and popular culture.

From an outsider’s perspective, I feel like it is easy to dismiss the power of the Minneapolis scene. Although it may not stack up to the likes of LA or New York, it is an extremely tight knit and growing community with a lot of history as well as growing influences.

With the rise of solid local hip-hop artists and DJ’s, new events and initiatives by Twin Cities’ street wear shops, and overall support from the community, we have really been able to find a niche in a city that just needed a reason to be involved.

Tell us a little about The Airtime Collection and the people involved.

We really wanted to create something that looked simple on the exterior but had an extreme amount of depth when it came to the concepts and ideas that actually formed the brand.

Yes, we are a company that makes tees, sweatshirts, and hats but really those elements are just the medium we have chosen to get our message across. If you read the quote on the home page of our website taken from Edward Murrow’s Box and Wires Speech (http://www.rtnda.org/pages/media_items/edward-r.-murrow-speech998.php), you can clearly see the parallels between old-time radio and the street wear industry.

I do all of the artwork but I am not the only one who comes up with the ideas. My close friends are one of the biggest reasons why this concept has so much depth. Through our conversations, ideas, and past experiences, we can each bring unique angles to the table. Most importantly, we have fun doing it.

What are some of your favorite brands out right now?

I am a big fan of simplicity when it comes to brands. Also, I am a tall guy so fit is a determinant as well. My top three favorite companies right now are Undefeated, The Award Tour, and Supreme. I pull influence from many places but watching these three are huge when it comes to setting my own game plan.

What new upcoming events or releases are you currently working on?

We are waiting on our Fall/Winter release right now, which honestly has been a pain as far as production. Our printer has run into more problems than you can imagine so we are playing the waiting game that I, myself am not too good at.

We also just released a mixtape with Pwelbs.com featuring many up and coming artists from all over the country so I am very excited to let people see the music that directly influences our company.

Last, new hat samples, events, and collaborations are in the works so we have both short and long term things to look forward to…which is nice.

What would you say are the most difficult aspects or being in your line of work?

I am a very trusting and positive individual so in my early stages of running a business, this has been a double-edged sword. On one hand, I bring a light hearted and open mind to all points of operation while on the contrary; people have taken my kindness for weakness and in turn, attempt to take advantage of it.

The fashion and music worlds are often tied together…What music artists out right now are grabbing your attention.

This is definitely true in terms of street wear. Honestly, I listen to everything on the map from CCR to Al Green to Sublime, but in terms of what I listen to on a consistent basis right now I would say A Tribe Called Quest, Nero, Kid Cudi, and Wu-Tang. These guys are so incredible and timeless that it never gets old.

The ’90s spawned the terms Generation X and Pepsi Generation. The revolutionary, plugged-in expanse

The ’90s spawned the terms Generation X and Pepsi Generation. The revolutionary, plugged-in expanse between 1990 and 1999 symbolized the crystallization of youth culture—when technology, creativity and limitless possibility reached an amalgamated zenith. It was when rap and MTV became mainstream, Kurt and Big lived and died, and everything became inextricably linked with corporatism.

This list of definitive ’90s songs is by no means actually definitive. Instead, we wanted to take a moment to revel in our youth and explore the pop culture moments that make up our collective psyche. Regardless of whether you get with, smile at, or treat these moments with familiar scorn, chances are they fit seamlessly into your retrospective scope like Pizza Hut and slap bracelets. And don’t forget to share your favourites with us in the comments.

1991: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away

This song epitomizes everything that is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in style, substance and even in the way they would record every song thereafter. To Chili Pepper purists, never has the band been as good as when the album Blood, Sugar, Sex Magic, in which this was the lead single, was released. Following this record guitarist John Frusciante would go AWOL and the Chilis would enter a dark period that included stints with Dave Navarro and a spot on the Beavis and Butthead soundtrack. Not until Frusciante rejoined the band seven years later would the Chilis even be a shadow of what they were when they cooped themselves up in a haunted LA mansion with Rick Rubin and recorded the perfect alternative rock album.—Jesse

1991: A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhime

There is a reason that whenever Q-Tip tours (for his solo stuff, not as A Tribe Called Quest, sadly) he invites an audience member up on stage to help perform this popular Tribe classic. After all, besides serving as the group’s biggest hit single, it was the first to solidify the back and forth style of rapping that Tip and Phife Dawg would be known for throughout most of the ’90s. It’s almost sad to see this actually, because as much as Tip clearly loves this song, it just isn’t there without Phife, and nowhere is this more obvious than when you see it live.—Jesse

1992: Nirvana – Come As You Are

I would love to know how many people first learned to play guitar with this song. It was so simple to play, but it still managed to sound so good. Yeah, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was Nirvana’s big smash hit, but it was Cobain’s ability to follow it up with the puzzling and haunting melody and lyrics of “Come As You Are” that made Nirvana legendary. For every heavily distorted, almost out of control screaming fit of a song, everyone still knew he could create beautiful music like this (and “Heart Shaped Box”, “All Apologies”, a gorgeous unplugged album, etc…).—Jesse

1993: Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

Stone Temple Pilots (pre-1990, “Shirley Temple’s Pussy”) got a lot of flack for sounding like Pearl Jam — but as if I knew about that kind of shit back then and as if I really care now. “Plush” is a mealy-mouthed, choreographed pleasure, something about dogs and eyes of disarray (I think). I still don’t know the lyrics and I think I like it better that way — but I can sure as hell sing along and you better believe I feel, I feel something when I do. Like shit, I just listened to it five times while typing this. Someone, make out with me!—Jef

1994: Lisa Loeb – Stay (I Missed You)

Okay, I know I was like nine years old when this song came out but that doesn’t mean I didn’t feel the same Reality Bites-esque generational angst that Lisa Loeb was singing about. Incidentally, this song was featured on the soundtrack for that generationally seminal film. Wikipedia notes that Ethan Hawke basically discovered Loeb and passed this song onto a pre-slapstick Ben Stiller (who directed Reality Bites). She’s a total one hit wonder, I know. But aren’t those tracks the power anthems of your youth? Plus the success of “Stay” is a crucial music moment—it was the first time an unsigned artist reached the top of the Billboard 100. And, oh yeah, seriously, Winona Forever.—Anupa

1994: Boyz II Men - On Bended Knee

Did you know Boyz II Men are still touring? A friend of mine saw them at Casino Rama (!?) recently and said it was the best show she’d ever seen. “On Bended Knee” is the musical manifestation of many a grade school dance — hands on hips, awkwardly closing space in the dark, shuffling around in circles not knowing what else to do. Some tunes bring about nostalgia, but almost everyone my age would probably agree the most visceral and vivid memories are sound tracked by this song. I won’t even get into “I’ll Make Love To You”. —Simon

Everyone seems to make lists of everything, so I’d thought I would share a list of my 24 favorite artists. They are in no particular order in terms of favorites, just a collection of the music I enjoy listening to. You might ask how was this picture so conveniently put together? Well I had made this image a while back using Photoshop for my Myspace page and have kept the image on file ever since, in case I would want to use it again as in this case for the blog. So take a peep at the album covers, you just might find your favorite artist or album on here!

Q-Tip’s sort-of latest efforts in Kamaal The Abstract take you back to the 90’s. As part of the legendary group A Tribe Called Quest, 39-year-old Kamaal Ibn John Fareed, or better known as Q-Tip, continues to impress. Maybe the sounds on this record are highly influenced by the time – the album was initially supposed to be released on October 23, 2001. But, because of big-wig doubts it wouldn’t be received well, and album leaks to the internet, Arista Records decided not to release it. After years of battling for control, Jive Records announced at the beginning of 2009 they would release the album under their reactivated Battery imprint.

Thankfully it finally came out. I’ve listened to this record three times in full, and am still at a loss for words on how to describe it. It sounds like Q-Tip decided to attempt every genre of music out there. Song after song – if Q-Tip’s token and renowned voice wasn’t the glue, one could wonder if they were listening to the same CD. When the disc starts, it sounds like you’re going to hear something like The Shins, but that happens to be only rock chord on the record. You hear jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk, and even a touch of gospel. Q-tip both raps and sings, and shows his musical talent supersedes so many “comparable” artists out there.

According to Wikipedia, in William Jelani Cobb’s book To the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic, Cobb compared Kamaal The Abstract, along with The Roots’s Phrenology, Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides, Common’s Electric Circus, and the work of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, as a “genre-bending” effort at the musical expansion of hip hop.

I know that this is old news but I wanted to share this video/song and my feelings on it. The song is G.O.O.D. Music label mates Consequence and Kid Cudi covering the A Tribe Called Quest classic Buggin Out. The video consisted of the two dancing around and just having a good old time (not to mention Kid Cudi’s awesome outfit). The fact that there are still rappers in the game who are just making videos for the fun of it, and doing it well, is to me what is keeping the Hip-Hop alive!

To finish up the year 1998, I figured that I’d put up some tracks that also came out that year to give a wider perspective on what was happening that year outside of French House in Electronic music. Pretty varied selection, let’s do it, and get super pumped for 1999.

*Also note new poll on the right

Breakbeat was dominating British dance parties, and Fatboy Slim was killing it with his funky, Hip-hop inspired jams that pretty much everyone can instantly recognize and sing along to. This track is no exception. He’s definitely one of the best samplers the world has ever seen.

Though not French House, Air was right there this whole time helping to develop the French Touch sound. This song rules, you probably already have it.

Meanwhile in Germany, DJ Hell was pushing the German Techno scene forward, and would eventually come up with the worst genre name ever, Electroclash. Despite that horrible name, he made some awesome tracks. Some of his tracks get WAY too repetitive for me (and I can handle really repetitive), but this one’s very cool. Great sampling.

When I think of Pop music, I usually think of Sweden (my glorious ancestry!). Fun Fact: The masterminds behind some of Britney Spears‘ early hits were random song writers from Sweden. Ace Of Bass, also Swedish, released this in 1998. No comment on my particular opinion of them, but once again this post is all about perspective, right?

A Tribe Called Quest are incredible, and have released some of the best produced Hip-hop tracks, ever. They released an album called The Love Movement in ‘98, and it has this amazing track on it.

»If you feel the urge to freak do the jitterbug | Come and spread your arms if you really need a hug«

A Tribe Called Quest, »Can I Kick It?«

Året var 1990 och A Tribe Called Quest hade just debuterat med albumet »People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm«. Rock’n'roll, reggae, blues och dussintals andra stilar matades också in i deras funkiga maskiner; hiten »Can I Kick It?« presenterade Lou Reeds »Walk on the Wild Side« för en ny publik.

I gänget fanns förutom A Tribe Called Quest storheter som De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, LeShaun, Black Sheep och — ibland — Busta Rhymes och hans galna liga Leaders Of The New School.

* * * * *

Deras tredje skiva »Buhloone Mind State« gjorde en djupdykning i mörka, mullrande jazztoner.

På »Midnight Marauders« förklarade en kvinnlig robotröst deras ambition: »Seven times out of ten we listen to our music at night. Thus spawn the title of this program. The word >maraud< means >to loot<. In this case we maraud for ears.«

Nya skivan »Beats, Rhymes and Life« är råare och mer avskalad än sina föregångare. I skivbolagsöronen lät »Beats, Rhymes and Life« ändå som en svårsåld produkt.

* * * * *

Folk breakade i vardagsrummet.

* * * * *

Q-Tip kallas ibland Mc Love Child och The Abstract Poetic.

»Yo check a check it out bla bla bla bla, that’s what he said | Then I came back and I fucked up his head.«

* * * * *

»Beats, Rhymes and Life« har ett dystrare konvolut.

* * * * *

»Hip hop, a way of life? It doesn’t tell you how to raise a kid or treat a wife«, rappar Q-Tip i »Keep It Movin’« på nya skivan.

»Hip hop is fucked up. Yeah, niggas is bugging out«, sade deras DJ Maseo i en intervju.

The Jungle Brothers släpper sitt nya album »Raw De Luxe« i oktober.

Ali frilansar som A&R-man åt Quincy Jones etikett Qwest Records.
