I had my tutorial on Monday where we showed a draft of our A-Z of Graphic Language PDF. I was really nervous before as you just hope that the tutors like what you are doing and think your doing well. My tutorial was with Darren and Philipa, who I hadn’t shown my work to yet.

The tutorial went well though and it was much more laid back than I thought it was going to be, as we just went around looking at other work individually and then the tutors looked at it a bit more while we went out of the room to fill in a questionnaire.

The main point of the tutorial seemed like an analysis of where we are and what we have been doing, viewing others work, sharing opinions and giving each other feedback and generally on just where we should go from this point to develop it. So overall I found it very helpful.

I new I had to improve my layouts which is one of the main feedback points that I got from the tutorial. I had miss interpreted the meaning of consistency, I thought this meant keeping everything consitent in the layouts but it means more to keep 1 thing in the same place and maybe have the same sized column bars but move them around the page and make the pages more varied with more energy.

Other points:

• layouts-more asymmetrical and dynamic
• Type-look at more big letters and smaller captions.
• Look at reducing the script font use, its good on the huge capitals. Look at Vaughan Oliver’s book Viseral Pleasures for good use of decorative type
• Not enough pace and change
• Look at Children’s books, good ones at the Tate Modern
• However really nice ideas and images, keep going

So now I really feel excited to have more direction in which to take my ideas and progress with the PDF. I will look into different layouts, typography, continuing creating new ideas and finishing off the pieces for my PDF.

Den här veckan samtalar Shilan Saidi på A-Z med Alexander Bard om religionen zoroastrismen, en av de äldsta monoteistiska religionerna som grundades av profeten Zarathustra för ungefär 3500 år sedan. Zoroastrismen har spelat en viktig roll i historien genom att ha påverkat våra nutida stora religioner och det råder det ingen tvekan, samtidigt så är Zarathustras lära något som teologer och historiker alltför sällan talar om.

My first tutorial, where we talk about our ideas, show our work, progress and see others work etc., took place last Monday. Mine was with Steve Lloyd and during the tutorial I showed all the work I had, spoke about the type of work I want to do for the project, which is print but didn’t have a firm theme that I wanted to go with for it. After the tutorial it pushed me to start actually looking into ideas, so my original idea of fairytale/make-believe become more prominant in my mind. I started looking into this on the internet, thinking that maybe it would lead me onto a different theme but it didn’t and I began to realise that this is the theme that I wanted to work with.

Decided theme now was: fairytale

Now I just began compiling ideas, looking on the internet at fairytales, work relating to fairytales, ideas for the PDF and then words that i could possibly use for each letter of the alphabet, creating a list.

I new that I wanted to use different processes to create the pieces for each letter of the alphabet. Then I also wanted to create a little story that would run through the alphabet, so on each spread would be a part of the story, featuring a word beginning with that particular letter. Then with this I would link the piece of work I was creating, into the story or create them to be relevant with the story.

Ideas for processes:

collage, dark room photography, photography, posters, computer, screen printing, stencil, letterpress, drawing, spray painting, sewing….

Basically I wanted to show my interests; which are print and hand made graphics and then create a little story with the theme of fairytale, that would be different, interesting and a little funny. I hope that this will be a different idea and will appeal to the tutors just for being fresh, interesting and different.

Plus, the VCT that I had decided on going with, that has to link in with our PDF work was ‘Found or <Find>’. I new straight away that this VCT lecture was the one that I was interested in and it links in with some of the kind of work I want to do for the project. I can use old ideas, old work to print over or cut a stencil into, all the materials that I have collected over a long time, new objects that I find, old pictures and so on.

O is for Open Knitting- use a larger needle on a thin weight yarn and you get a more lac-y outcome!

P is for Purl- Second to the knit, it’s the easiest stitch you’ll learn. Mix the knit and purl and you can rule the knitting world!

P is also for Patience- You’ve got to have it when working on something large

So I was thinking that I haven’t really put much up lately about the quirky things that make this place so different than the US & I ought to do more of that before I become too accustom to recognize them. I got over the novelty of the ridiculous number of ‘humps’ signs on every street pretty quickly, and the whole boot/bonnet thing seems normal now, but there are some truly sociologically interesting differences going on here every day.  So although future entries will not be in alphabetical order, I guess I’ll start with the letter A, just to get into the spirit.

A is for Average-Looking People on Soap Operas

Unlike US (and Mexican Telemundo) soaps, the majority of the characters on these shows NEVER look like they’ve had a professional make-up artist at their disposal. Ruddy skin, broken capillaries and huge pores are the norm along with thin and dull hair and frumpy clothing. It’s true even for nighttime dramas.  It’s really weird to watch these things. They’re like trainwrecks home movies. However, I have to say that almost all shows do feature one extraordinarily beautiful woman on the show. Just one.

Wonder what that says about the culture…

M is for Mom- She’s the one who taught me to knit, she’s there to sympathize with me when a project goes awry and she helps keep the balance in a crazy knitting world

M is also for Multiple projects- Every crafter has them! The more the merrier!

M is also for Mean yarn- You spent the money on it and now it’s failing you. Make something simple and painless out of it and give it to someone. They’ll never know how much grief it gave you!

N is for New Stuff- It’s so thrilling! My mom always laughs and gives me a look when I come home with a bag from loop or Joann Fabrics…

Looking at these provides me with all different types of ideas and inspiration. Im just trying to settle on certain ideas at the moment as I feel this project can go in any direction.

K is for Keeping it- It’s not selfish! You put a lot of work into it… savor the experience!

K is also for Knit- The first think you’ll learn- Knits for in the back of the stitch. You can do anything with a knit stitch!

L is for Llama- Who knew their fur could be so darned comfy and soft! Pick up some Llama or their (cousin?) Alpaca today and you won’t be sorry!

Wegens overweldigend succes van de eerste reeks A-Z lezingen, start de tweede serie op 10 november.  Hierin komen internationale namen en jong talent op punt van de doorbraak en erkenning hun nieuwste visies en ontwikkelingen op vlak van design, architectuur en kunst uit de doeken doen.

“A-Z is een label waarbij de A staat voor arts, architectuur en de Z voor Zebrazaal, Z33, Zone Z. De organisatie is in handen van Architectuurwijzer, de Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg met departement  Arts  &  Architecture en initiatiefnemer Design Platform Limburg. Dit jaar komen daar nog Z33 en de Media & Design Academie van de KHLim er nog bij”, aldus Heleen Van Loon van Design Platform Limburg.

Praktisch
