Descriere: saxofonist (alto, sopran), compozitor

Născut: Julian Edwin Adderley, 15 septembrie 1928, Tampa, Florida, SUA

Decedat: 8 august 1975, Gary, Indiana, SUA

Gen: Jazz

Stiluri/Subgenuri: Hard Bop, Soul-Jazz, Fusion

Biografie:

Mercy! Mercy! Live At The Club, înregistrat live în studio, cu prezenţa unui public invitat.

I was truly looking forward to writing this review. There are so many things that need to be said in regards to this woman. Its beyond her voice, beyond her presence, beyond her deeds, its all of it rolled up into one. The Great Annie Lennox.

As most people, my first experience with Annie Lennox was with the band, The Eurythmics. The 80s brought about sooo many amazing bands into my life and The Eurythmics were one of them. The moment I saw her I saw fire. LOL. That short red hair, the stunning eyes, the androgynous look made me think “Who IS that???” Then I heard that voice!

Annie has this voice that you see her and think, “wow that just came out of her mouth… really…awesome!”. Its deep, sultry, powerful, shocking, beautiful, enchanting, I could go on forever. You heard her voice and you forgot about everything around you. All that mattered was her voice. The great thing was my mom fell in love with her too and when you are 8 years old, with not many friends, and raised by a single mom, your bond is stronger and having our love for The Eurythmics and Annie Lennox made it just that much more fun!

So eventually Scottish-born Annie took a much needed break from the Eurythmics to work on solo work and whoa did THAT take off!!

Her first “solo” work was mainly a duet with Al Green covering the song “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” for the movie Scrooged. it was produced by her Eurythmics cohort Dave Stewart and it was just uphill from there.

Her first solo album Diva is probably one of THE most amazing albums ever. The songs “Why” and “Walking On Broken Glass” were epic! I can listen to Why and cry my eyes out. Its basically everything I feel in my head when I feel supressed or patronized. Its someone yelling for you “THIS IS HOW I FEEL YOU DONT KNOW HOW I FEEL!!” Its such a release you want to laugh, scream, cry, shake your fist, breathe a sigh of relief. Walking on Broken Glass the range of octaves for her in the bridge are just so amazing. Its a standard of mine in karaoke. Little Bird is also a favorite from that album. The video for it is just as great. A bunch of lookalikes from all her personas in her many different videos from the past. Its a fun romp!

She also did a song for the movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The movie kinda sucked but the song “Song for a Vampire” is one of the most beautiful songs in the world. I wish I had sang it. I wish I had that talent. I do have talent but wow, to be Annie Lennox!

Anyways after Diva came Medusa which was an album of cover songs however I gotta tell ya, I forgot No More I Love You’s wasnt her own song. In fact almost all the songs on that cd you forget they are from other people because she makes them her own.

Bare was exactly that but in a good way. A bit more simplistic yet just as beautiful. Annie found her niche and its as a phenomenal solo diva!

As for soundtrack work, she release yet another gem with her song for Return of the King, “Into the West”. It won a well deserved Oscar for best original song.

More recently in 2007 she had put out yet another album entitled, Songs of Mass Destruction. I highly suggest checking out all of her work. Annie Lennox is sheer majesty! I bow down in reverence.

The video I have is Song for a Vampire from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was hard finding a video since most were disabled for embedding yet I lucked out with this one!

The Hobby is filled with a ton of strange and unusually cards you normally wouldn’t expect to find in a pack. With so many products based around historical figures and events, it shouldn’t surprise you that Thanksgiving has found its way into people’s collections. Upper Deck and Panini (Donruss at the time) steal the show when it comes to Thanksgiving themed trading cards. Most of them aren’t worth very much, but to player/set collectors they could possible fill that hole which has been in their collection for years.

From 2006 to 2008, Donruss printed base cards of their popular football products containing their Thanksgiving logo slapped on the front. There were a few ways you could obtain these. In 2006, Beckett inserted some of them into issues of Beckett Football Card Monthly. You could also get team sets if you attended the football game that was playing that Thanksgiving Day. Finally, Donruss inserted some of them in packs of their football cards that year. From 2007 to 2008 you could get them at the stadium on Thanksgiving Day or pull them from packs. Some of these cards contain rookies of popular (at the time they were popular) players such as Reggie Bush, Marshawn Lynch, and Jamarcus Russell.

This year’s Upper Deck A Piece of History probably contains Thanksgiving’s two best cards in existence. The one above features the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth and the one below could basically be considered Thanksgiving Day’s rookie card. Scholars have debated for years when and where Thanksgiving originally started, but most have agreed upon the year 1621 at the Plymouth Plantation. Its a topic that could be discussed by historians way into the night much like the topic of when and where someone picked up a stick and said lets play baseball. I’m sure if pieces of the Mayflower were available for sale, Upper Deck would be all over them to insert into the next version of A Piece of History.

01: Conflict - This is one of my favorite songs off this album, I love how it slowly begins with the light strings. I loved the arrangement which reflected the part where she sings the chorus this is your brain on drugs pretty well because I felt a sluggish feeling while listening to this song. I loved Sy Smith’s vocals, she sounded a bit hypnotized in my opinion but still pretty good. I love the part conflict, opposites.. physiological politics trying to live without regrets, trying make us all forget… that made this song all in all very awesome and straightforward into the face.

02: Fly Away With Me - I really love this song, I really do. Sy Smith’s vocals were oh so lovely on here, I loved the smooth and semi-high pitches she went with on here. I love the beautiful arrangement, it makes me think of me laying on top of a fluffy cloud or on a hotel bed which is the best feeling in the world ever. I also loved the music video for this song because it meshed really well with the meaning of this song. This song all in all is pretty wonderful.

03: The Things I Do - Don’t get me wrong, this song is pretty soothing and good but… it’s so long like 6 minutes and 48 seconds which is a bit too long for a song that doesn’t have much going on. Sy Smith’s vocals were really smooth and content on my ears, she did a wonderful job. The arrangement sounds so peaceful and tranquil with its r&b and neo-soul atmosphere and that’s what makes me want to listen to it along with the fact that Sy Smith sounds really good on here but honestly this song can tiresome after a while.

04: Overthought (feat. Bibal Salaam) - This song reminds me of the title track a lot in a good, tranquil way. Sy Smith’s vocals were still pretty good and so were Bibal Salaam’s vocals, I don’t know myself though I know very few who do and… The backing vocals gave the song a really relaxing atmosphere and they meshed well the soothing neo-soul/r&b arrangement. Both of their vocals were really nice and they seemed to compliment each others singing, this all in all was a really nice song.

05: The Art Of You - This was my jam back in the day of 2008 and when I first heard the preview of it, I fell in love with the song. Now I’m listening to the full length version of about the billionth time but I never listen to the whole thing though so I actually think it’s pretty all right so far. The arrangement plays a bit like air and watered down which does nothing for me but bores me to tears. Sy Smith’s vocals were pretty all right and when she really got into the song at the end of the song and did the oh, ah parts, that’s when they were just the love but this song though gets a little tiresome after a while.

06: Spies - I wasn’t really all that crazy about this song when I first heard but it has grown on me ever since then. I loved Sy Smith’s vocals, she sounds very into the song especially during the chorus which is the highlight and my favorite part of this song. The arrangement sounds pretty retro-funk and somewhat disco, it reminds me of the 70’s and 80’s. This song all in all is pretty lively, interesting, and entertaining. let’s be spies…

07: Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness – I really loved this song when I first heard it when I first download this album online. Sy Smith’s vocals were rather soulful and full of character, I love the chorus: see I can sing and make it pretty and so on, so on. The arrangement sounds a bit futuristic blended with some neo-soul/r&b and some lovely, soulful instruments. Sy Smith did an amazing job with this song and she sounds so into it. This song all in all is pretty wonderful and just.. wow.

08: Reach Down In Your Soul (Feat. Wes Felton) - This was the major song that made me want to get this album because it’s so smooth and sexy. The arrangement is very neo-soul and r&b, the beat was a bit annoying though but I just focused on Sy Smith’s really lovely singing and Wes Felton’s deep-pitched singing in the chorus along with his rapping which was pretty good. I loved the chorus: Whatever you do, Wherever you go.. I’m going to reach down in your soul. This song all in all was just the love.

09: B-Side Love Affair - If I thought the previous track was wonderful then this next track is just as nice also. Sy Smith’s were pretty lovely and smooth, the ooing from her before the chorus was perfectly placed in and I enjoyed that a lot. The chorus sounds pretty creative: I want a b-side love affair, I don’t know if you’re ready to go there but if you are, you can find me on the b-side. The arrangement was really soothing and smoothly drowned in r&b and neo-soul, it was a nice composition all put together. This song all in all was pretty interesting, clever, sexy, and just.. awesome.

10: Would All The People From Compton Please Leave? - Lol @ that title! This song though is really nice and it sounds like Sy Smith is singing this in a live performance but it still sounds good. baby, I’m trying to tell you how much I love you… Sy Smith is really doing a nice job on this one, the notes in her vocals were love and she seems like she’s getting into this song. The arrangement sounds like a band playing the instruments and it all sounds more so on the neo-soul/funk side so it was a nice listen on my ears. This song all in all was pretty awesome and soulful.

11: Star - Oh, my god… when I first heard this song on my first listen back in the day where I was waiting for this album to release, I fell in love with it ever since. Sy Smith’s vocals were really strong and soulful, she did an wonderful job with her singing. The backing vocals were a nice touch to the song, they give the song itself more depth and feeling. The arrangement sounds so retro that I enjoyed it from the get-go because it was playing so mellow and soothing. I want to be your only star, I want your star… I loved that part of the chorus and I loved the part at the end where she goes with these lovely high-pitches and succeeds all the way. Way to go, Sy Smith!

1. Conflict
2. Fly Away With Me
3. The Things I Do
4. Overthought (feat. Bibal Salaam)
5. The Art Of You
6. Spies
7. Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness
8. Reach Down In Your Soul (feat. Wes Felton)
9. B-Side Love Affair
10. Would All The People From Compton Please Leave?
11. Star

My opinions & thoughts on Sy Smith’s third album Conflict: This album was pretty nice and soulful, I’ve enjoyed every last minute of listening to it. Sy Smith comes back yet again with such a strong album and she really won me over with this album. I’ve been jamming out to this since way back when it first released, all the songs sounded so nice although there were some that were a bit tiresome though but that didn’t really drag this album down at all because Sy Smith’s wonderful singing makes up for that. She has really impressed me with this and I really hope she decides to give the live performances a break so she can get a chance to get her together and do another album because although this album was really good, I want to hear something new from her aside from the live performances she’s been doing so far.

Paul Weller, The Brand New Heavies, Leftfield, The JTQ, Mica Paris, The Young Disciples, Alison Limerick, Max Beesley, Moloko and members of Jamiroquai are just some of the artists that turn up on this celebration of the 21st Birthday of one of the most influential independent labels of the 1990s and beyond. “London Street Soul” is a look at the heavily soul influenced output of Ed Piller and Gilles Peterson’s creation. Once Peterson left in 1989 Piller’s modernist vision embraced a gritty mix of soul, beats and retro influences learned in clubs such as Talking Loud at Dingwalls, but that at its height not only encompassed world-wide hits, but also ownership of London’s Blue Note nightclub – declared by Time Out in 2000 to be the club of the Millennium. The music on this compilation tells the story of the label from its earliest hits such as the beat-laden `I’m The One’ by D Influence and the Brand New Heavies’ `Never Stop’ – here in the chart-bothering David Morales 7″ mix – through to its recent top 40 hit by Andy Lewis and Paul Weller and on into this year’s great hope Twisted Tongue. Along the way we come across the very first production by Leftfied, Sandals’ `Profound Gas’ which is presented as a previously unreleased 7″ mix. Also here are a largely forgotten performance by Brit-soul diva Mica Paris in a wonderful duet with Mr Exe and most of the Young Disciple hooked up Max Beesley in the Subteranneans. Cloud Nine were Mark Brydon’s project immediately before the chart-topping Moloko, that fell apart when a sampling problem drove them apart.

The great Acid Jazz acts are all here, The JTQ with Alison Limerick on the modern soul classic `Love Will Keep Us Together’, Mother Earth with a Brendan Lynch radio mix of `Jesse’, and there are also several lesser-known gems that shine through such as the wonderful `Lovesick’ by the Nightrains, the jazzy soul of Pure Wildness and the Sun Ra space soul of the Emperor’s New Clothes. Also worth noting is the folk-funk on Jinrai who marked the start of a rebirth of the label in 2001.

The booklet is packed full of rare photographs from the label’s archive and an in-depth interview with Ed Piller, as he talks through the tracks on the album. It is the first of a three volume series that will follow with “London Street Beats” and culminate with `London Street Jazz’.

Been really hard to find any inspiration today for something to write. For the first time in a long

Been really hard to find any inspiration today for something to write.
For the first time in a long while Monday has been very dull and eventless…crap.
Well maybe it is because of the weather, only rain, wetness and cold winds, isnt it really time for some snow or something right about now?
I miss the good old winters with tons of snow, that really gave both the coy winter mood but also a sense of christmas feeling.
I love to play this timeless Queen song ” A Winter’s Tale“, it really tells quite a different ‘winter’s tale’, because partly there is no mention of snow or christmassy stuff, but then again it sounds very warm and fuzzy, almost romantic in my ears, especially at 1: 45 where the guitar solo starts…if I close my eyes I can just see infront of me a romantic dance with a beautiful woman infront of a fireplace.

Feels like it’s time for a new poem soon?
Maybe this lack of inspiration, grief, boredom and longing is the material I need?

Im planning on getting one of my ears pierced, been a thought lingering for a while now.
I really would like to have a cool tribal earring, they look pretty cool.
What do you think, do you think I’d fit with one of these?
Xmas gift maybe?

• MARIO featuring Gucci Mane and Sean Garrett – “Break up” (I choose this song although it may be too street for some tastes…but the combination of flows made for an engaging journey into downtempo Rhythm & Beats aka R&B)
• Mary Mary featuring Kierra (KiKi) Sheard – “God In Me”
• Trey Songz featuring Drake – “Successful” (People like this dude Drake right now and Trey finally got some hits out this year beyond New York and ATL…This was a good second place mention)

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR

• Michael Jackson

Since there weren’t any choices, it goes to Michael. It goes to him not because he was the best this year but because he died this year, let’s keep it real. This music industry is so politically inclined they couldn’t just say we are giving MJ the accolades we haven’t given out of guilt…maybe if more of us were supportive and loving toward one of the greatest to ever do it then maybe the people closer to him would have done more to protect and take care of him.

Looking forward to seeing who actually wins! Maybe the industry can take notes from the AMAs by giving awards based on sales and not politics since sales mean PEOPLE chose the winners! *Pardon me Grammys* but the voters are not necessarily in tune with the music…I’ll get on their case in another blog coming soon!

Monday November 23, 2009 By Kevin Morrow What a day I had yesterday. I played in an all day

Monday November 23, 2009 By Kevin Morrow

What a day I had yesterday. I played in an all day tournament at the University of California Irvine, I had a lot of fun. There was a lot of action during the day, from the interesting mellow drama of my transportation, to the mini series of events during the games. Throughout it all I learned a lot of new things about myself and about reality.

I began the day on a journey from Corona to San Bernardino then back to Irvine. I really didn’t know where the ARC (Anteater Recreation Center) was but I had a general idea of where the school was from memory. As I left to Irvine from San Bernardino I ended up in a construction area that had the freeway narrowed down to one lane. Normally I would be worried and panicking, because I was supposed to be at the gym at 9Am, and let’s just say…”I wasn’t going to make it there by 9Am.”

So instead of worrying, I kicked back, put on some music that reminded me of happiness, and I went with the flow. After I made it through the traffic it was straight coasting all the way through. Time flies when you are having, fun, or maybe it doesn’t exist. I eventually arrived at the campus of UCI and I had no idea where to go.

This was yet another example of how worrying would get me nowhere. The cool thing was I just felt my way to the center. I had no directions and I had never been there before. I was tempted to ask these two ladies where it was but something told me to go with my gut. As a backup plan I would ask someone, because there was no shortage of people walking around, but I decided to go with my instincts.

Somehow by listening to my inner compass I found the ARC without a problem. Which was a huge relief, instantly I began to realize that maybe I know things that I don’t think I know. All of this goes well with previous things I have blogged about. But anyway, back to the subject.

The tournament ends and I have to go back to San bernardino, which is about an hour or more from where I was. It was dark outside and I found myself lost. Not really lost, but confused I guess you could say. I didn’t feel a knowing for where I was. Plus I didn’t know the street names. All I knew was I needed to get back to the 73 freeway.

So I head out in a direction and I feel like I am headed the wrong direction on a street named Culver, but I second guess myself and keep going. I decided to stop at a gas station and admit to myself that I didn’t know where I was. I go inside of the gas station in an attempt to ask directions.

I’m literally waiting in line for ten minutes behind this guy who is having a full on conversation with the clerk. I was tempted for a second to get angry, but then I calmed myself. I thought to myself, “What’s the point in being upset, I’m here this is happening right now so just chill and relax. Stop worrying there is nothing you can do to change it, so change your attitude. Enjoy this moment, maybe you will learn something. Besides your anger is in your imagination anyway.”

As soon as I finish that dialogue in my head, another clerk comes out from the back and asks to help me. I slide myself over to him and explain that I somehow got turned around and I’m looking for the 73 freeway. The clerk looks at me and has no answer, he looks at the other clerk, who also has no answer. Before I can even think, the same guy who was in front of me starts politely explaining to me where the 73 freeway was. All I had to do was turn around on Culver and keep going until I ran into it.

I thanked the gentleman three times and left him with a “Have a great night!” This was really cool to me, because I realized that without worrying everything worked itself out. But wait, there is more, this is were the story gets even better. I go all the way down Culver for what seemed like forever and I get to the 73 freeway.

Now before when I came up the 73 I didn’t have to pay a toll, and so I wasn’t event thinking about having to pay a toll. It was the last thing to cross my mind. I’m not paying attention to signs, I just hop on the onramp because I’m already late as it is getting back to San Bernardino. Then I start seeing these lights and a sign that says toll. I’m like “uh oh,” because I have no money on me. All I have is my debit card which is in the negative at the moment.

Naturally I start getting worried because there is this big sign that says $500 fine for people who go through the toll without paying. So for a brief 30 seconds I get worried. I mean how do I turn around on an onramp? So I start to calm down and I decide that I should just back up slowly with my hazards on because at this point I’m the only person on the road. I actually found 20 cents in the car but the toll was $1. So I’m calmed down and start telling myself not to worry because there is always a solution.

Then I see the headlights of a car, they pull up right behind me. Im sitting there, I look back in the rear view, they look at me, I look at them, they look at me, I look at them…I thought to myself that I was in a good situation because the young lady behind me was a pretty one and I could feel that she had a genuine care for others. All materialistic things aside however I thought to myself it would be awkward if I got out the car and asked for her help.

“So I looked back and said “Would you mind if I backed up and turned around?”

She said “No I can back up, do you need me to?”

I was like “Yeah I’m a little lost and I wasn’t aware that this was a toll, I don’t have any cash on me.”

This young lady says not to “worry” about it she has a dollar in change to spare me.

I was like wow.

All I could say was Thank you several times, and I wished her a great night.

Out of all the people to run into at that time when there was nobody else on the road. She even told me she only hops on this part of the freeway to go down a couple exits.

And that my friends is how NOT worrying saved me from a $500 Fine.

I sipped delicious sangria and he drank outrageously expensive vodka as we sat together on a couch on the restaurant’s patio. I was telling him all about how a colleague of mine, who has a tendency towards cantankerousness, had been so frustrated with me the past month or so. The colleague had a routine of popping into my office as soon as I got there and asking me about the latest administrative bullshit . . . and enjoying the sparks as I revved into pissed-off, indignant Demi mode. But lately I’d disappointed him because every time he showed up for an entertaining bitch session, I was just . . . happy.

“Are you seeing a new fella?” Mr. Nico joked.

“Yep, I am,” I smiled.

“You must really like this guy if he makes you that happy.”

“Well, yeah . . . but he actually left me naked. In bed.”

“God, sounds like a total asshole.”

Mr. Nico did actually leave me naked, in bed . . . twice. And both times it was because he had these commitments he’d made, commitments he kept because he’s that kind of loyal and dependable and honorable sort of person. As much as it annoyed me that I didn’t get to keep him in bed with me for another couple of delicious hours, I really respected the fact that he kept his word to the people who were counting on him. Which takes a lot of internal strength when you’re having to tear yourself away from a hot naked chick to follow through on your word.

Yes, I do admire that about him . . . but it doesn’t stop me from giving him shit about it at every opportunity.

Some food came out and the sun began to set. He lit a cigarette and I stole it from his hand a time or two. And then, we started talking about how we’d get to see each other again in no time at all. Thanksgiving week was upon us, so instead of waiting a week or two to see each other again, it would just be a few days. There was a little rush of excitement as we started mapping out the long weekend. He’d be back in my town on Wednesday. Yay! We’d have to do our respective family stuff on Thursday, but then there was Friday all for us.

“I’m driving back Saturday; I have to pick up Nicole from the airport.”

::Insert that awful sound of the music abruptly dying as the needle scratches across the record here.::

I was hugging him as he said it. “You have to pick Nicole up from the airport? That’s stupid,” I said, my arms still wrapped around him.

“I know!” he said as I pulled away from him.

“Tell her to take a cab.”

But he wasn’t going to tell her to take a cab. Even if he agreed with me that the whole thing was stupid, she’d asked, and he’d said “sure.” He’d keep his word . . . even if that meant cutting short a weekend with his current girlfriend to play chauffeur for his ex-girlfriend. Hmph.

********

Mr. Nico has always been that kind of good guy. He got married to a mutual friend of ours in his early twenties. She cheated on him before a year had passed and the marriage ended, and yet somehow they seem to be good friends after all that. A couple years ago Mr. Nico and I were hanging out, having drinks at a bar, and I asked him about it. How is it that you can still be friends, I asked. Why wouldn’t we be, he answered. That’s just who he is . . . doesn’t hold on to bitterness and grudges. He doesn’t understand my strong desire to put boundaries between myself and (some of) my exes . . . our first fight was actually about that, him not understanding me wanting to block A. from my life (but that’s another blog post!).

I want to try to understand his live-and-let-live openness, I do. I think there’s something beautiful about it. But . . . isn’t there a line somewhere?

I’m thinking that line should be drawn at driving two hours north to give your ex-girlfriend a fifteen minute drive home from the airport.
