Singapore Airlines has announced that it will alter its Singapore-Manchester service from 28 March 2

Singapore Airlines has announced that it will alter its Singapore-Manchester service from 28 March 2010. The airline will change from 3 weekly non-stop flights to 5 weekly flights via Munich, marking the airline’s entry into Bavaria.

Flight SQ 328 will depart Singapore at 2245 hrs every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, arriving in Munich at 0535 hrs the next morning. The flight continues to Manchester at 0635 hrs for a 0800 hrs arrival. On the return leg, flight SQ 327 takes off from Manchester Ringway International Airport at 0920 hrs, landing in Munich at 1225 hrs before taking off again at 1335 hrs to arrive back in Singapore Changi International Airport at 0740 hrs the next day.

Travellers in Manchester will see journey times increased by over 2 hours, but will enjoy increased flight frequencies and an improved inflight product. Singapore Airlines will introduce an equipment upgrade on the route, flying a 3-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft which replaces the 2-class 777-200ER aircraft currently used. Passengers travelling in the premium cabins will be able to enjoy the airline’s latest First and Business Class products in a 1-2-1 configuration for greater comfort and privacy.

Lufthansa is currently the only operator on the Munich-Singapore route, flying 5 times a week with a 3-class Airbus A340-600. The German airline will reduce frequencies to twice-weekly when Star Alliance partner Singapore Airlines begins flying the route. However, Bavarians will gain greater access to Asia with 7 flights a week and convenient connections in Singapore to regional destinations served by Singapore Airlines and its regional affiliate, Silkair.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has announced it will introduce a series of enhancements to the onboa

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has announced it will introduce a series of enhancements to the onboard product across its fleet of aircraft. Amongst the improvements are a new inflight entertainment system, cabin refurbishments of the A320 and B777 fleets, as well as the refitting of its Diamond First class Suites on all of its A340s.

Next-Generation Inflight Entertainment System

The airline has selected Panasonic Avionics Corporation’s eX2 for its next-generation inflight entertainment system. Featuring over 600 hours of entertainment, the system includes a selection of 85 movies, 114 television shows, 60 games and a CD library of over 450 albums. Guests will also be able to access content on their iPods through a connector in every seat, with Diamond First and Pearl Business passengers also having a RCA connection for other portable entertainment devices.

An interactive, easy-to-use interface in both Arabic and English lets guests navigate the system, with several unique features including a new picture-in-picture function, keyword search and ‘Do Not Disturb’ option in premium cabins. In addition, Diamond First guests will be able to use the Etihad Room Service by placing a telephone call to the crew from the comfort of their suite. In every class, in-seat telephones allow for calls to be made from every seat onboard to anywhere around the world at a rate of USD6 per minute using a credit card.

The first of 5 new Airbus A330-300 aircraft fitted with the system will enter into service in December 2009. Etihad will also offer the system on its new fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft scheduled for delivery from 2011.

A320 and B777-300ER Cabin Upgrades

Etihad will also upgrade the cabins onboard its A320 and B777-300ER aircraft. The airline has engaged Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies to undertake the refurbishments.

Currently fitted in a 2-class configuration with a reclining seat in Pearl Business class and standard seats in Coral Economy, the short-haul A320 fleet will be upgraded to feature the latest cabin specifications in both classes. On its B777-300ERs, the airline will also be moving towards a high-density 3-4-3 layout in Coral Economy class. The alterations will also include the replacement of existing seats and an upgrade of the inflight entertainment system in-line with the rest of Etihad’s fleet of aircraft.

Diamond First Class Suites To Be Fitted On 9 A340s

First introduced earlier this year exclusively on Etihad’s A340-600 aircraft, the luxurious Diamond First Class Suites will soon be available on 9 of the airline’s fleet of A340 aircraft. The upgrade, to be carried out by Lufthansa Technik, will involve a complete renovation of the cabin, galleys and inflight entertainment system.

Each aircraft will be fitted with 12 suites in a 1-2-1 layout. Each suite promises greater privacy, comfort and increased storage, with a sliding door, flatbed seat upholstered in plush leather by Poltrona Frau, personal wardrobe and minibar. A 23-inch widescreen LCD monitor delivers on-demand content from the inflight entertainment system. The cabin also features a large and luxurious changing room equipped with a full-length mirror, new-style wash basin and leather fold-down seat for guests to freshen up and change.

http://yuuji.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/lowlf/

An Airbus A340-500 carrying 255 passengers declared an emergency landing after the tail struck the ground.

The flight crew had miscalculated the weight, and dumped fuel over Melbourne.

According to TheAustralian, this was Australia’s closest to a disaster that they have ever been.

An Emirates spokesperson says that she “cannot comment on the investigation as it is underway”.

The Air Traffic Controllers were worried, because the aircraft did not register on the radar because it was flying too low.

The damage on the aircraft is shown below. The damage is classified as severe.

German airline Lufthansa is set to re-introduce its inflight broadband service FlyNet. From the midd

German airline Lufthansa is set to re-introduce its inflight broadband service FlyNet. From the middle of 2010, passengers will be able to enjoy communications options on-par with powerful wireless hotspots or upmarket hotels onboard the airline’s long-haul flights by logging on the network using their computers or GSM/GPRS-enabled devices from any point in the aircraft.

Partnering with Panasonic Avionics Corporation, Lufthansa aims to install FlyNet on a major part of its intercontinental aircraft fleet within the first year of operation for the service. The improved FlyNet allows passengers to not only surf the internet wirelessly, but also send and receive emails, text messages and transfer data via their smartphones. Lufthansa is focusing on the high-bandwidth service to facilitate web surfing, file transfer and Virtual Private Networks (VPN), which will benefit business travellers who need to catch up on work whilst in the air.

Specific prices for the use of FlyNet has not yet been determined by Lufthansa, but the Cologne-based airline has plans to introduce different pricing models, ranging from an hourly rate to a monthly flat rate. Passengers may also be able to utilize their frequent flyer miles for the use of the service.

FlyNet was first introduced by the airline in January 2003, before being withdrawn at the end of 2006 by Lufthansa’s then-partner Connexion by Boeing. 69 of Lufthansa’s long-haul aircraft were fitted with the system, which had approximately 30,000 users each month. Lufthansa’s re-introduction of FlyNet follows similar services offered or planned by its competitors, including American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines and Virgin America.

Today, Lufthansa operates a fleet of Airbus A330, A340 and Boeing 747 on intercontinental flights from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich. The airline is set to take delivery of the double-deck Airbus A380 in early 2010.
