This completely handmade notebook measures 14,8 x 21 (cm) and has 60 plain recycled white paper pages. Back cover is 1mm black cardboard and the front cover created by Yeliz Yorulmaz as a photographic collage and printed on 210 gsm Glossy Photo Paper. Completely hand-bound pages stitched onto the cover with black cotton thread by using the Japanese Bookbinding Technique, Yotsume Toji. In this technique, four small holes are made along the spine edge and the sheets and covers, and then bound together tightly with string or thread ties that wrap around the spine. Since Japanese are masters of bookbinding, they figured out the secrets of making long lasting and eye-catching books. The only difference between the traditional Japanese Yotsume Toji Bookbinding and this version is the location of the binding at the top of the book, and the cover that flips opens at the top, characteristic of reporter’s notebooks.

Back cover is 2mm cardboard wrapped with 120gsm black paper and the front cover is 2mm heavy-duty cardboard covered with the printed image of a photograph taken by A. Baki Kocaballi. Completely hand-bound pages stitched onto the cover with blue cotton thread by using the Coptic Binding Technique. This ancient style of hand-sewing leaves the spine exposed and the stitching visible. Aside from the beauty of the stitches along the spine, Coptic binding allows the book to lay completely flat when open, making it useful for sketching and/or journaling.

This little 52-page gem is essential reading for anyone in love with London.

For starters, the description on the website is enough to make one  swoon: “… a love-letter to London, to the wet neon flicker of late-night pavements, electric with endless possibility and the soft dishevelled beauty of the city’s dawn… to the overheard stories and unexplored histories, the facts and the fictions, the accidental poetry and fugitive art of graffiti-slashed suburban stations and rain-splashed shopfronts… the out-of-shot lives half-glimpsed from a train window, or from a phone number scrawled on the back of a Travelcard, dropped on the night-bus stairs…”
(I wasn’t going to paste all of that, but I couldn’t bare to chop any out because it’s lovely.)

Editor Matt Haynes and his contributors dip into the pockets of London that are often forgotten and empty them out for us through creative writing and photographs that expose London’s lint as well as its little known treasures. “A London Peculiar” is accurate indeed because this is one of the most unique publications I’ve seen that explore the city so thoroughly in print. It was one of my first London discoveries when I moved here and still one of my favourites.
