Security expert Karsten Nohl plans to hack the GSM encryption standard using distrubuted computing strategies. With this project he wants to force operators to fix a security issue that exists for 15 years now.

Cnet reports that the project to hack the GSM A5/1 encryption standard shall be realized as open source distributed computing project. The project has been announced at the Hacking at Random 2009 conference, which took place in the Netherlands in August.

A software shall be able to calculate the secret keys. Nohl plans to afterwards release the codebook, which will make it possible to decrypt short messages as well as phone calls and other data. 80 state-of-the-art computers would require about three months for a brute force attack but 160 super computers could do the job within one month to calculate the  Rainbow Tables. Nohl’s software therefore uses state-of-the-art techniques that allow to use the CPU as well as the GPU  to calculate the keys.

According to Nohl new security issues won’t be created. It would be all about making a security issue public that now exists for 15 years. This security issue should be used actively, therefore commercial tools exist, says Nohl.

Nohl recommends operators to change the entire encryption scheme or to switch entirely to UMTS that uses a better encryption standard. As long as the operators have not fixed this problem, customers should use a proper encryption software. Nohl mentions that organizations like Amnesty International and Greenpeace already would already make use of third party security software. Since security is a bi-directional functionality, this only works if both clients involved in a communication process share the same software and keys.

So, it has come to be the end of the first month of 2009 and I feel just like I did at the end of the last month of 2008.

I am still a slacker, under appreciated and misinterpreted…but these are things that will never change.  We did see however:

I vote in Colorado, and we actually have more initiatives on the ballot than in California. Again, from the perspective of a voter primarily concerned about climate change and clean, renewable energy, here are the propositions that are relevant. (I’ll spare you my opinion on if eggs should be people.)

Amendment 52 – Redirect severance tax revenues for road repairs. No.
A quick look at who’s backing this thing is enough to convince me it’s crazy. See my article on Colorado Republicans.

Amendment 58 – Ends a tax subsidy for the oil and gas industry. The saved money would be used to expand college scholarships, preserve wildlife habitat, support clean energy projects and help local communities deal with the impacts of oil and gas drilling. Yes.
I looked into this in detail as Policy Committee Chair for the Colorado Renewable Energy Society (CRES), which endorses the bill. Naturally the oil and gas drillers want to keep thier subsidies, which is why you’ve probably seen more ads against it than for it. See A Smarter Colorado for the other side’s take.

Boulder Initiative 1A. Yes. This would allow Boulder county to issue municipal bonds and use the proceeds for loans to help fund home energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements in residents’ homes. CRES has also endorsed this one, for pretty obvious reasons.

And, of course, if you care about clean energy, you’ll be voting for Mark Udall and Barack Obama. I used to like John McCain, and once even voted for him in a primary… back when he was a maverick. Now he’s just old, and in the pocket of his party.

I friend on mine gave me a avi rip of the “Ashes and Snow” DVD. I liked it so much I’m going to buy the DVD for its photographic scenes and music – looks great on a flat panel screen with surround sound!

I ran into a common problems that people have whereby the playback in Quick Time doesn’t always provide the sound due to a missing codec. In this case I was missing the AC3 codec sometimes called the A52 codec. Open source products such as VLC play it correctly however I wanted it to work in QT!

After spending almost a day trying different alternatives I came across an open source version that… you guessed it … “Just works”!

Het blijkt dat veel leerlingen die filosofie kiezen ook erg geinteresseerd zijn in psychologie. Sommigen denken er zelfs over in die richting iets te gaan studeren later! Reden dus om de laatste weken voor de kerst aandacht te besteden aan wat onderwerpen die vooral te maken hebben met psychologie.

De onderwerpen die aan bod komen zijn:

- Sociale psychologie: groepsgedrag en -experimenten. Waarom helpen mensen anderen soms wel en soms niet? Hoe kon de Holocaust gebeuren? Welke gevolgen heeft het om tot een bepaalde groep te horen? Waarom strijden we om land, schermen wij onze tuintjes af, en gaan we in een lege wagon nooit naast de enige andere passagier zitten? Dit zijn de soort vragen die een sociaal psycholoog probeert te beantwoorden.

- Behaviorisme: het maakbare individu. Volgens deze stroming kan je de mens door middel van beloning en straf vormen zoals je wil. Maar wat betekent dit voor de vrije wil?

- Biologische psychologie: sociobiologen verklaren al het menselijk gedrag als een poging zoveel mogelijk genen te verspreiden. Het (onbewuste!) doel: zoveel mogelijk nakomelingen die jouw genen delen laten groot worden. Dus dat je naar een disco gaat heeft als functie dat je op zoek bent (of oefent voor later) naar een geschikte partner met sterke genen waarmee je nakomelingen krijgt. Elk gedrag verklaren zij in termen van genenverspreiding…

- Freud (alleen 5V): vroegere ervaringen zijn bepalend. Ons arme ego moet telkens maar bemiddelen tussen het id, waar onze driften zitten, en het super-ego, dat (te) hoge normen aan ons stelt. Soms gaat dit mis, en bieden gesprekken liggend op de bank enig soelaas…

Begin oktober werd jullie gevraagd een essay te schrijven over de stelling: “Er komt een generatie computers die emoties toont, gevoel voor humor heeft, die blijdschap en verdriet kent, kortom die zich als een mens gedraagt“.

De meeste leerlingen vonden dat dit onmogelijk was, en hadden daar zeer goede argumenten voor. Het meest gehoorde was dat die robots dan nog steeds geprogrammeerd zouden zijn door de mens, dus niet spontaan iets zouden voelen maar alleen dat doen als dat zo geprogrammeerd is. Ook bleken veel leerlingen een dualist te zijn, want ook het argument dat deze robots geen ziel zouden hebben werd vaak gebruikt.
