Nicht nur die Kategorie des besten Animationfilm wird 2010 hart umkämpft sein, da auch die kleine Schwesterkategorie “Bester animierter Kurzfilm” insgesamt fünf nominierte Kurzfilme stellen wird. Folgende 10 Kurzfilme haben sich für die Nominierungswahl qualifiziert und kämpfen um einen der fünf offenen Plätze:

Meine Favoriten aus dieser Auswahl sind auf jeden Fall “Partly Cloudy” von Pixar, “The Kinematograph” und “The Cat Piano”. Letztlich ist es aber sehr wahrscheinlich, dass das Rennen zwischen “Partly Cloudy” und dem neuen “Wallace & Gromit” Kurzfilm ausgetragen wird. Für Pixar ist es nahezu schon Tradition Jahr für Jahr die Kategorie des besten animierten Kurzfilm zu gewinnen. “Partly Cloudy” wurde übrigens vor Disney/Pixars “Oben” als Vorprogramm gezeigt.

Der Onlineauftritt von Entertainment Weekly hat vor kurzem eine Liste der 20 besten Animationsfilme veröffentlicht. Die Liste ist natürlich nur eine Zusammenstellung der Entertainment Weekly Redaktion und sie basiert nicht auf dem kommerziellen Erfolg der Filme, weshalb auch relativ viele Independent Filme mit dabei sind. Hier die Liste:

1. Wall-E (2008, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Wall-E ist eine wundervolle Symbiose aus Romanze und Gesellschaftskritik, die mit einem wundervoll subtilen Humor gespickt ist.

2. Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland (2001, Studio Ghibli)
   Meine Meinung: Neben Prinzessin Mononoke der stärkste Miyazaki Film. Die Neuinterpretation der klassischen Geschichte von Alice im Wunderland ist fabelhaft gelungen und bietet darüber hinaus genug eigene Elemente, um dem Zuschauer eine völlig neue Erfahrung zu bieten.

3. Oben (2009, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Für mich bisher der beste Film 2009 und genau so tiefgründig und faszinierend wie “Wall-E”. Pixar beweist mit den neusten Filmen, dass man neben eher albernen Filmen auch wirklich tiefgründige Kost bieten kann.

4. Der König der Löwen (1994, Disney)
   Meine Meinung: Für viele Menschen meiner Generation ist dieser Film einer der Schlüsselmomente der Kindheit. Der Film hat zwar inzwischen 15 Jahre auf dem Buckel, ist aber immer noch genau so faszinierend und wird noch über Jahrzehnte hinweg Kinder und Erwachsene begeistern. Aber meiner Ansicht nach ist der Film schwächer als “Die Schöne und das Biest”.
5. Persepolis (2007, Universal)
   Info zum Film: Ein Film über die Geschichte einer Familie im Iran, die über alle Grenzen und Generationen hinweg zusammenhält.

6. Die Schöne und das Biest (1991, Disney)
   Meine Meinung: Für mich der schönste Disney Film der 90er Jahre, welcher zurecht als bester Film des Jahres für den Oscar nominiert wurde. Der Film ist für mich ein zeitloser Klassiker und einer der ganz großen Würfe von Disney. Im Herbst 2010 wird dieses Meisterwerk endlich wieder  neu auf DVD und Blu-ray aufgelegt.
7. Die Unglaublichen (2004, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Vor allem humortechnisch weiß der Film voll und ganz zu überzeugen. In meine persönliche Top 3 der Pixar Filme schafft es dieser Film zwar nicht, aber dennoch ist er meiner Meinung nach ein wundervoller Film, welcher gekonnt Superheldenklischees bedient ohne dabei lächerlich zu wirken.

8. Toy Story 2 (1999, Disney/Pixar)
   Meine Meinung: Ein weiterer Pixar Film und ein weitere Meisterleistung der Schmiede. Es gelingt zwar selten, aber der zweite Teil von Toy Story übertrumpft das Original deutlich und bietet Familienunterhaltung auf höchstem Niveau. Da kann man sich definitiv auf den dritten Teil nächstes Jahr freuen.
9. Bambi (1942, Disney)
   Meine Meinung: Bambi gehört zweifellos in diese Liste, da es Disney hier gelungen ist einen Familienfilm zu veröffentlichen, der sowohl die Kleinen als auch die Großen zu Tränen rührt. Eine wundervolle Pioniersarbeit für zukünftige Werke.
10. Coraline (2009, Universal)
    Meine Meinung: Für mich ist der Film einerseits ein grandioser 3D Film und zugleich ein wundervoll gruseliges Märchen mit grandiosen Ideen und einer starken Bildsprache. Der Film richtet sich eher an Erwachsene und wird für die meisten Kinder zu grausam sein, was dem Film aber nicht schadet.

11. Dumbo (1941, Disney)
    Meine Meinung: Ein weiterer zeitloser Klassiker aus dem Hause Disney, welcher wichtige Werte vermittelt. Kommendes Frühjahr erhält der Film eine Neuveröffentlichung auf DVD und Blu-ray, worauf sich alle Disney Fans freuen dürfen.
12. Das große Rennen von Belleville (2003, Les Amateurs)
    Infos zum Film: Ein skuriller Film rund um die Tour de France und alte Damen, die versuchen den entführten Champion zu retten. War 2003 sogar als bester Animationsfilm für einen Oscar nominiert.

13. Chicken Run (2000, Aardman)
    Meine Meinung: Für mich zwar nicht so stark wie “Wallace & Gromit”,  aber dennoch eine gelungene Komödie. Für mich bleiben aber “Wallace & Gromit” und “Flutsch und weg” führend in Sachen Aardman.

14. AKIRA (1988, Toho/Bandai)
    Infos zum Film: Für viele Leute der Inbegriff des Steampunk Anime und einer der ersten Animes, der auch in westlichen Gefilden Erfolg feiern konnte.
15. Der Gigant aus dem All (1999, Warner Bros.)
    Meine Meinung: Der beste Film von Brad Bird, der heute fast ausschließlich für Pixar arbeitet. Es ist wirklich Schade, dass der Film so unerfolgreich war, was aber wohl an der ernsten Thematik des Filmes liegt. Der Film hat alles: Humor, Dramatik, Spannung, Atmosphäre und Anspruch.

16. South Park der Film (1999, Warner Bros./Paramount)
    Meine Meinung: Der Film ist einfach nur grandios und bietet bitterbösen Humor. Kein Film für Kinder, aber ein Meisterwerk für Erwachsene. Matt Stone und Trey Parker haben die TV-Serie wirklich grandios auf die Kinoleinwand adaptiert.
17. Kikis kleiner Lieferservice (1989, Studio Ghibli)
    Meine Meinung: Ein wundervolles Feel-Good Movie aus dem Hause Studio Ghibli. Der Film ist zwar an sich nicht spektakulär, macht aber dank der sympathischen Charaktere sehr viel Spaß. Gehört definitiv in meine Top 5 der Ghibli Filme.

18. Pinochio (1940, Disney)
    Meine Meinung: Pinochio darf natürlich nicht fehlen, da er wie Dumbo oder Bambi ein Meilenstein des Animationfilmes ist und zahlreiche wichtige Werte vermittelt.

19. Waltz with Bashir (2008, Arte)
    Infos zum Film: Ein animierter Dokumentarfilm über die Erinnerungen von Soldaten an den Libanon Krieg.

20. Ghost in the Shell (1995, Production I.G.)
    Meine Meinung: Ein weiterer Meilenstein des erwachsenen Animationfilmes, welcher eine düstere Zukunftsvision zeigt und dabei neben den zahlreichen Actionsequenzen auch genügend Anspruch bietet.

It’s the 20th Birthday of Wallace and Gromit 
 

LinkedIn. Know it? It’s kind of like Facebook but with a businessy twist. The egomaniacal voyeur in me particularly likes the fact that you can check to see how any people have been looking at your profile. It will even give you a rough profile of the people who’ve swung by to check on your business life story.

This week it’s the same old mix of headhunters and people in similar roles checking out the opposition. But HELLO, who’s this having a butcher’s at my bio? Head at Aardman?

I guess they're just drawn to me.

Has my unique way with words reached the ears of Nick Park? Will Parking in Stevenage be retired in favour of Scriptwriting in Bristol? Will I bound on to the stage at the Oscars alongside the Old Parkster in one of his ridiculous bow-ties? I’ve not had the call yet, but when he reads this he’ll realise the game’s up, come clean and get me to grammar-check his latest screenplay.

Watch this space.

Two new campaigns I wanted to share for the same reason: using digital to raise awareness and action of two serious health issues by doing something interesting.

Memories Matter

Do you have a favourite memory? Something that you always look back on and smile? Domain have just launched a new campaign for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust including a microsite which stores peoples’ memories forever. The site demonstrates that without more funding for research into dementia, this is what we stand to lose. Sadly, dementia set to double within a generation. The site is a blend of real people and celeb memories including Terry Pratchett (the world’s most “famous” sufferer of Alzheimer’s) and others including Michael Parkinson, Felicity Kendall, Patrick Moore, Gordon Brown and loads more.  When you read some, you’ll laugh out loud. Read others and you’ll be quite choked. So many people, so many very personal memories.

This is quite close to my heart as my grandfather suffered from Alzheimer’s and it’s so heart breaking to see the inevitable decline from a once strong and clever man through the comedy moments of losing his glasses and they’re on top of his head all the time & deciding to flush tea towels down the toilet instead of the washing machine; to living in a different time period where he recognized nobody and nothing around him and the fear and anger this created inside him. Worse still was the decline in his health through the disease, the tension it caused in his relationships with his wife of over 50 years, his daughter and the inter-family relationships that are hard-wired into that bond. Sadly the mental decline and the need for constant care saw him spend his latter days in a care home where it was so painful to see someone you love literally wilt away.

Alzheimer’s is not a sexy charity in the way Cancer Research or stuff for kids is but it’s a cruel disease robbing people of their memories and ultimately their lives. Please support this campaign. Well done, Catch.

A hard Story About a Soft Subject

Obviously this isn’t one I’m familiar with but a wonderful take on a serious issue – erectile dysfunction. Profero have teamed up with Aardman films to create a series of short films about Dennis and his journey from Droop to Don Juan for Bayer-Schering pharma. In England, we’re very bad at admitting any health problem – unlike our American friends who appear to hold in high esteem their physical and psychological problems and will happily tell you all and the drugs their taking too. Over here, we just ignore it and hope it will go away. Not so easy when it’s a condition that affects millions of men over 40. I particularly like the disengaging tone and the way the truths of the problem come through (no pun intended) by being entertaining and engaging. In this overly-cluttered advertising world, doing something interesting is the only way to get noticed. This has it spades. Thanks to Nick Clarke for sharing.

Anti-pesto to the rescue!

With autumn in the air and the harvest season looming near, my family recently watched Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Quite apart from the inspired improbability of Aardman Studios productions, the central role of the village vicar in this film aroused my interest. Confirming an oft-cited proposition of this blog that mythical creatures burst from the same mental regions as religion, at Lord Quartermaine’s inquiry as to what might kill a were-rabbit, the vicar promptly pulls down a monster book from his shelves to reveal the secret. It is the church that knows about monsters.

In my continuing research into religious reactions to death and the afterlife, I constantly run into the name of Montague Summers. Summers was the author of the definitive books, in his period, on vampires, werewolves, and witches. He is best known for his translation of the Malleus Maleficarum, “the hammer of witches,” the main witch-hunting tome of the Middle Ages. A deacon of the Church of England before converting to Catholicism, Summers was a believer in the phenomena that he researched. Styling himself a witch-hunter (he lived from 1880 to 1948), he tried to live the fantasy world he helped to create.

The more that neurologists study the brain, the more we discover how deeply embedded religion can be. Any number of researchers have suggested various “God-shaped nodules” in the gray matter that provide for continuing religious belief in the face of advancing scientific knowledge. I would suggest, as a “religionist,” that perhaps nestled next to our mental menorahs, crucifixes, and statues of the virgin, there are also ghosts, witches, werewolves, and vampires lurking in the dark corners of the God node.

2) Monstruos contra Alienígenas: Resucitar a Godzilla, la Criatura del Lago Negro, la mancha voraz de The Blob y el científico loco modelo Vincent Price para una película de animación en tres dimensiones podría haber dado como resultado un peligroso viaje nostálgico. Nada más lejos de la realidad, porque Monstruos contra Alienígenas logra casar su referencialidad cincuentera con un ritmo alocado, capaz de atraer a las nuevas generaciones. El resultado es un notable homenaje a los placeres de la serie B que incluye, entre otras filigranas heterodoxas, una secuencia en la que un presidente estadounidense con la voz de Stephen Colbert se encuentra con un alienígena gigantesco a ritmo de Planet Claire. Hay tres ediciones disponibles: la básica, la especial (acompañada del corto inédito B.O.B. se lo pasa bomba) y otra que incluye un peluche de nuestra gelatina azul favorita. 3) Matrix (Blu-ray): La influyente trilogía de los hermanos Wachowski ya había debutado en Blu-ray, pero esta es la primera vez que se puede adquirir cada película por separado (en lugar de llevarse a casa la colección definitiva de seis discos más librito). Dado que hay una gran parte de los fans de Matrix que no soportan las secuelas, parece una buena idea. De todos modos, volver a ver la primera entrega hoy tiene una consecuencia no deseada: darse cuenta de que ya han pasado diez años, y de que esa promesa de revolución que parecían anunciar los directores ha estado muy lejos de cumplirse. En 1999, sólo podíamos soñar con el cine que veríamos en 2009… Hoy sabemos que el futuro fue mucho más aburrido y convencional de lo que parecía. Auch. En cuanto a los extras, los audiocomentarios de expertos en diferentes materias y los diferentes documentales sobre la producción son excelentes, pero lo que de verdad te debería impulsar acomprar este Blu-ray es la secuencia del helicóptero en 1080p. Die Free-TV Premiere des Aardman/DreamWorks Animations Film “Flutsch und weg” bei Sat.1 lief sehr erfolgreich. Der witzige Film mit den kultigen Schnecken, hat das direkte Spielfilmduell gegen ProSieben gewonnen, die mit “Into The Blue” auf Action gesetzt haben.

1,53 Millionen Zuschauer im Alter zwischen 14-49 Jahre haben sich für den Aardman Film entschieden und damit für einen sehr guten Marktanteil von 15,6 Prozent eingefahren. ProSieben kam in der gleichen Zielgruppe auf lediglich 10,3 Prozent Marktanteil. Insgesamt haben sich 2,48 Millionen Dollar für Flutsch und weg interessiert. Lediglich RTL konnte mehr Zuschauer am Samstag Abend für sich gewinnen und holte den Tagessieg nach Köln.

Am morgigen Samstag, den 19. September, zeigt Sat.1 die Free-TV Premiere des Films “Flutsch und weg” aus dem Hause Aardman/DreamWorks Animation. Es ist der erste Film der in gemeinsamer Zusammenarbeit zwischen Aardman (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run) und den DreamWorks Animation Studios entstanden ist, da der Film anders als übliche Aardman Filme nicht mit Knetgummi liebevoll ausgearbeitet wurde, sondern mit Unterstützung von DreamWorks am PC entstand.

Hier ein kleiner Auszug zum Inhalt des Films:

Die Hausmaus Roddy St. James residiert im noblen Kensington und hat als verwöhntes High-Society-Mitglied keinen blassen Schimmer von der harten Realität der Großstadt London.

Während seine Familie im Urlaub ist, spuckt das Spülbecken die Abwasserratte Sid aus, und als Roddy den Eindringling loswerden will, wirbelt ihn die WC-Spülung in die Londoner Kanalisation. Dort gerät er ins Boot von Nagetier Rita, die im Clinch mit dem bösen Crimelord Toad ist, der den Untergrund von Käse-Essern säubern will.

Ich kann den Film jedem empfehlen und habe ihn damals im Kino gesehen. Flutsch und weg ist einfach nur urkomisch und ist eine Non-Stop Achterbahnfahrt für die Lachmuskeln. Die Schnecken sind einfach nur kultig und zum aufwärmen für morgen hier ein paar kleine Ausschnitte der Schnecken aus dem Film.

Just to demonstrate how little the mainstream media world knows, or probably cares, about puppet animation, London free newspaper Metro featured an article about Bob the Builder’s 10th birthday that seemed to get its creator wrong.

The article quoted Keith Chapman – the writer who came up with the concept – as the character’s designer. He is quoted as saying:

“I knew when I first drew Bob the Builder, I had created a very special character”

Hmm. Then why is it that Curtis Jobling is the man who is really credited with the character and production design? Curtis seemed pretty sure he was the one who gave Bob his distinctive look when he did a talk at Animated Exeter in 2008 – and many web sources back that up.

OK, so Keith Chapman may well have sketched out an idea of how the character looked – but it’s not the character that ended up on the TV screen, and the article doesn’t make this clear.

It’s irritating – and it’s not uncommon. I’m tired of seeing story after story about Aardman Animations claiming Nick Park is the founder. He didn’t come on board for nearly 10 years!

Just for once I’d like a newspaper article on stop-motion animation to be written by someone with at least an interest in the subject – and preferably some knowledge…

É só até este domingo, hein? A versão paulistana do 17º Festival de Internacional de Animação do Brasil, o Anima Mundi 2009. No Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, ali perto do Vale do Anhangabaú, e no Memorial da América Latina, ao lado do Metrô Barra Funda.  O espaço do Memorial é bem aproveitado pelo festival, com diversas oficinas, como animação de massinhas, em areia, direto na película ou pixilation (na verdade, um tipo de animação stop-motion em que os movimentos de pessoas ou objetos são filmados quadro a quadro a quadro). Se você quer ver alguma sessão específica, é aconselhável descolar ingressos antes (bilheteria do Memorial abre às 10h ou via Ingresso Rápido.com). Eu já garanti meu lugar na sessão de hoje dos Curtas 15, que tem o novo filme da dupla Wallace & Gromit: Pão demônio (A Matter of Loaf and Death) - terceiro lugar entre os melhores curtas no júri popular da versão carioca do Anima Mundi. P.S.: a sessão Curtas 15 é fortíssima, com La Peste, Birth, o brasileiro Cômodo, o coreano Burning Stage, Sapmi e enfim, o novo filme da dupla da Aardman Animation, com tudo o que você pode esperar de Wallace & Gromit: humor, ação, graça e técnica.

Pamięta ktoś Wallace’a i Gromita w Goleniu Owiec? Cała intryga tego półgodzinnego arcydzieła kręciła się wokół tajemniczych zniknięć włóczek i niewinnych owieczek. Wśród tych ostatnich był baranek Shaun, który Wallace’a wprowadzał w zakłopotanie siejąc ogólne zniszczenie i pożogę w jego domu. Koniec końców Shaun stał rezydentem domu Wallace’a i wszystko skończyło się szczęśliwie. Nawet włóczki się odnalazły. Tak było w pamiętnym 1995 r. Po 11 latach baranek Shaun wraca jako gwiazda nowego show BBC ze stajni Aardmana o prostym tytule: Baranek Shaun. Podobnie jak w serii z Wallacem i Gromitem czy Uciekających Kurczakach, tak i tutaj nad całokształtem czuwał Nick Park, tym razem jednak w roli producenta i scenarzysty. Plastelina, poklatkowa animacja, czajecie bazę.

Na pierwszy rzut oka wydawałoby się, że mamy do czynienia z nieco innym ciężarem gatunkowym niż tym, który prezentuje seria z Wallacem i Gromitem. W Baranku Shaun brak jest jakichkolwiek dialogów – komunikacja następuje dzięki wymianie spojrzeń, mimice, gestykulacji, korzystaniu z różnych przedmiotów a w ostateczności – dzięki bełkotowi zrozumiałemu tylko dla bohaterów. Ponadto przygody na farmie do najsmutniejszych nie należą: a to owce wyjdą na pizzę do miasta, a to urządzą dyskotekę w oborze czy też zorganizują mecz piłki nożnej na pastwisku. Te i inne kwestie sugerowałyby, że targetem serialu są najmłodsi odbiorcy sztuki animacji. I nie byłby to nietrafiony wniosek pod warunkiem jednak, że uwzględnieni zostali by również starsi odbiorcy. Dlaczego? Ano dlatego, że Baranek Shaun raczy ich konwencją żartów sprawdzoną we wcześniejszych filmach. Chodzi o to, że absurd niektórych scen może śmieszyć dopiero tych starszych, nie umniejszając jednocześnie zabawy maluchom. Na tę mieszankę wybuchową składa się zręczne żonglowanie konwencjami, odniesieniami do kultury popularnej (a nawet wysokiej jak w odcinku o malowaniu), slapstickową komedią i brytyjskim, absurdalnym humorem. Kilka próbek: owczarek pilnujący owiec na szychtę bierze ze sobą termos z herbatą, a w chwilach wytchnienia raczy się słuchaniem muzyki z iPoda (coś, co oscyluje między drum’n’bassem a easy listeningiem); owce, by dostać się do basenu, w którym przygotowana została dla nich kąpiel, muszą stanąć w długiej kolejce, której szyk jest nam znany z dużych lotnisk czy dworców; w zasadzie cały odcinek o dyskotece na farmie; chyba najlepsze uchwycenie psiej natury ever w scenie, w której farmer rzuca psu dysk do aportowania (ujęcie psich oczu podążających za dyskiem – mistrzostwo!). Barry Purves es uno de los animadores más importantes y más influyentes del Reino Unido (sus trabajos en Aardman son una absoluta maravilla, y toda una muestra de su gran imaginación). Su habilidad creando magníficos cortos usando la técnica del stop-motion, y para crear historias, le ha llevado a trabajar con gente como Tim Burton (Mars Attacks), o Peter Jackson (en el remake de King Kong).

Hoy voy a hablar de una maravilla hecha por Barry Purves llamada “Next” (1989). Un corto, realmente increíble y fascinante, que narra como un exigente Shakespeare (del cual he leído algunas obras como “Otelo”, o “Hamlet”), busca al protagonista de su próxima obra de teatro en un casting realizado en un teatro clásico. El problema es que no está satisfecho con ninguna de las personas que aspiran a ello (las despide con esa maldita palabra para un actor, que es “¡Siguiente!”). Hasta que de repente, aparece un hombre, que realiza una magnífica puesta de escena, con la ayuda de un muñeco de trapo, y usando elementos de las obras de Shakespeare, como: Otelo, y la historia del pañuelo pérdido de Desdémona, o Romeo y Julieta. Todo parece indicar que va a ser elegido, hasta que..Bueno, verlo vosotros mismos (¡no os quiero fastidiar el final, amigos!):

Si amigos, Shakespeare era un cabrón. Esa diabólica risa que le sale al final del corto, es tan sólo propia de un cruel villano.

El corto contiene referencias al teatro isabelino (el teatro que más identifica a Shakespeare), elementos fantásticos, y una técnica del stop-motion totalmente fabulosa y digna de admirar (usando muñecos, y no plastilina, como era habitual en Aardman). Vamos, una gozada, y un gran trabajo de Barry Purves, que recibió múltiples premios, y que demuestra que Aardman estaba en plena forma a finales de los 80’s.

Pues, hablando de otra cosa, este es mi post nº 100 (después de 2 años, ya era hora de que escribiera 100 posts, leñe).
