So tomorrow I’m off to Brussels via Copenhagen to write some stories on the European Union and issues surrounding it. I’m very excited to be travelling again and I will se my mate, Fred whom I met in Taiwan. Will spend 2 days in Copenhagen and then fly to Brussels this Sunday. Excited to be flying on a plane and staying at a hotel with my classmates…will be a ton of fun.

So for the past 3 weeks we’ve been studying stereotypes in the media and how it affects the reporting by journalists and also the attitudes of the readers. There’s a law in Denmark which states that a Dane cannot marry a foreigner outside of the EU until they are 24 years old…it was enacted to prevent arranged marriages within Muslim families but its just a euphemism for keeping foreigners out of the country. It was quite interesting to learn about these laws and its evident that almost all Danes are against this. We interviewed a lovely Danish lady who had married a Kenyan man this year but he still cannot move to Denmark.

Our lovely Aussie princess Mary of Denmark is still massively popular there – ’she is being so down-to-earth and natural for a fashion icon’, so when she suggested Denmark should have a Sculpture by the Sea like the one in Sydney, everyone thought it was a great idea. And it was.  I was able to go there in June this year and see for myself.

Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest town, doesn’t have the spectacular cliff walk coastline of Sydney’s Bondi to Tamarama location, but it has a pleasant, quiet beach, with bushy slopes behind it. The Danes turned out in their hundreds of thousands to slog two kilometres along the sand (quite hard work in the soft stuff), admiring the 60 works, nearly half of them Australian. Ruth Belotti and Steve Rosewell’s ‘Soldier scale 1-1′ was very popular, as was Marcus Tatton’s ‘Carbon Equation’.    And as for Aarhus itself, it’s a nice town; smart, modern, organised and everybody speaks English better than most Australians.  They’ve corralled their river into a canal through the centre of town so that people can lounge by it drinking coffee (good, but at a price) and imagine they’re in Italy. Aarhus also claims to have Europe’s oldest outdoor museum, Den Gamle By, which is very well done, lots of fun for the kiddies and certainly worth a visit if you’re there. I’ll post more about it in the future.

Bueno pues hace unos dias llegue a Dinamarca y la verdad es que nada mas llegar se pueden apreciar grandes diferencias con España.
Yo estoy en Aarhus una “pequeña” ciudad (300000 habitantes) del norte de Dinamarca. Lo primero que te llama la atencion cuando llegas aqui es que todo dios va en bicicleta, la usan para todo: para ir a currar, salir a dar una vuelta, regresar a casa mamados despues de salir de fiesta, etc. Es increible estan por todas partes, de hecho aqui las bicicletas tienen prioridad sobre los coches. Ademas este es un pais bilingue, todo el mundo (y cuando digo todos me refiero desde el abuelo hasta el niño de 4 años) hablan ingles y Danes (si no hablan más idiomas)…

Otra cosa que me llamo la atencion es que es una ciudad que da la impresion de ser muy segura (y realmente lo es), tu puedes ir por cualquier sitio sin tener miedo a que te den el palo, de hecho la gente con las bicicletas las dejan en muchos sitios aparcadas sin cadena, ni na.

Ciertamente este es un pais caro, con algunas cosas solo es un poco más caro que en españa. Y salir de fiesta beber cuando sales de fiesta es caro, salvo que bebas cerveza que aqui esta tirada de precio o hagas “botellon” en donde vivas, pues beber en la calle no suele apetecer mucho pues ademas de que llueve hace un frio de tres pares de narices. Otro gran aliado del turista (o erasmus ) es el ron Rancado (solo 87 coronas lo que comparado con otras bebidas es practicamente la mitad o menos de lo que cuesta por ejemplo un Vozka Eristoff) y es muy bueno.

Y ya que hablo de los erasmus esta es la ciudad definitiva de los Erasmus, en ella hay unos 40000 estudiantes y como comprendereis hay unas fiestas del copon (las mejores que e visto en mi vida), aqui os dejo un video de como son:

Luego tambien los campus (de los que hay 30 por toda la ciudad) suelen tener bareto donde hay fiestecillas (pero nada comparadas con las que hacen los estudiantes), aqui podeis ver un video del bar de la residencia donde estaba yo.

Y que mas puedo decir esta ciudad turisticamente no hay demasiadas cosas y si te organizas bien las puedes ver a lo largo de 2 dias (superficialmente), pero cuando vayas a una fiesta mandaras a tomar por el culo el turismo y te iras de fiesta, fijo y una cosa que no habia dicho aqui antes es que las mujeres aqui son autenticas diosas, no habia visto tantas bellezas por metro cuadrado en ningun otro sitio, hay que estar aqui para saber a que me refiero, son autenticas diosas .

Bueno y por ahora esto es todo, más adelante ya contare más taluegooo…

this saturday i had my first in-school exam, 3 hours, open book, internet connection, all that (no communication allowed though, just research).

it was from 9 in the morning… and we went prepared, i took an extension cord with me, so if my laptop battery runs out, than i have where to plug it. when i got to the room, the first jaw-drop – the entire room was full with extension cords under each table, set up by the school.

ok, once i got over this, i went in, showed my student id to the lady and she asked me if i wanted to write it on the laptop of on paper. since i was writing it on my laptop, i brought a usb stick so i can give the paper to them afterwards.

now comes the second jaw-drop. when i told her i was writing it on the computer, she gave me a usb stick to put it on.

as it turns out, everyone (who was writing it on a laptop) got a separate usb stick.

after the initial surprise, i sat down, there was 1 paper on the table with all the exam rules and rights, another 2 papers that i had to fill out and an envelope, that also had to be filled out with the exam id (every student has a separate exam id – shown on the student id card). when i was done, i put the usb and in the envelope and sealed it and handed it over to the supervisor.

of course, you are allowed to drink, eat, go to the bathroom, etc. during the exam

the people who did it on paper were also kind of happy the paper they give you to write on has 3 layers – you need to hand in 2 and 1 stays with you so you’ll have a copy as well (which is kind of sweet, in case you have objections regarding your grade).

ok, so far i have discussed the technicalities, i think it’s only fair i tell you a little bit about the subjects as well.

there were 4 subjects (3 hours): the first one was a recent antitrust case from 1 week ago about Microsoft; the second one was about entry of apple/iphone/ipod touch on the game consoles market and competition and how this will affect the market and the game industry; the 3rd question was a relatively simple math question and the last one was about formulating a research question and research methodology, designing the ideal dataset to answer that question (in an econometric manner) – the topic of this question was how to maximize ticket sales of a movie theater.

so this was the first written exam.

this morning, i had to go to the police station to get my criminal records paper (cazier), you need it in order to get employed…

i got there a little early (at 09.15) and the records office only opens at 09.30. so i went in the police station, sat down at one of the ergonomically correct chairs and waited.

i say that i had to fill out a big big form in order to get the records. i’m just joking, i just had to write down my cpr number, my name and my address and that’s it.

so, time was flying, at 09.28, a lady came out and started the number machine so we took numbers, mine was 002.

at 09.30 the first number was called and shortly after that, mine.

so at 09.33 i went in and handed in my filled in form and my cpr card. and at 09.33 and 30 seconds the lady gave me my card back along with the already printed and signed criminal record put neatly in an envelope.

at 09.34 i left the police station.

yesterday was a big day for science

i had my first 12 hour exam. and no, we didn’t stay 12 hours in a bench at school…

at 9 o’clock in the morning, we downloaded the exam from campusnet and hat to upload the solution until 9 at night. so it was an internet exam or take-home exam if you will.

i don’t want to bore everyone with details, but the main idea is that it was lots of work (full 12 hours of work) but in the same time it was a much more hands-on approach to evaluating knowledge.

i’ll just copy a part of it, the first problem:

“Imagine the following situation: You are hired as a consultant by the ministry of labour. The ministry of labour wants to make training program for unemployed individuals. The goal is to increase their employment probabilities. Your job is to design a data collection strategy and perform an evaluation of the training program.

a) How should the ministry decide who should receive the training?

b) What information on the unemployed individuals will you suggest to collect? Why?

c) Describe the evaluation method that you will apply.”

This was the “soft” question, the rest of the problems were evaluating econometric models and interpreting them, suggestions to better them, etc.

all-in-all, it was a good trial by fire.

Hello! Remember me??

Once again, another month of not posting on this blog.  Inconsistency is my middle name. Actually, I joined the whole Tumblr craze and I regularly blog non-sense there. But this will still be my real blog, but hey if you have Tumblr let me know!

Anyway, I was woken up early this morning by a loud bang and sudden pain on my face. Apparently my bedside lamp decided to wake me up at 7 in the morning by falling onto my face. My fault, since the box that was holding the lamp up wasn’t really the sturdiest of surfaces, it was bound to give up one of these days. So I had no choice but to wake up and get frozen spring roles out of the freezer to sooth my 7am bump in the head. Which actually led to a productive day, so now that I’m done with all that I can blog.

So what have I been up to?

School, school, school. It’s that time of the year again where you cram 3 months worth of classes into a *insert a large number here that seem impossible to finish given the amount of time to do it* page report. To top it all off , next semester we have to intern in a company and country of our choice, and this internship searching was a lot harder than I anticipated. A LOT. I had three choices of countries to intern at:

1. Philippines. For obvious reasons.

2. Australia. I’ve never been there and I don’t know anyone there, so I figured it would be interesting. Plus they speak English!

3. Maldives. Don’t ask, I saw an internship placement there and it looked exciting.

Philippines and Australia are my top choices. I have about 3 months left to secure a placement, so wish me luck!

A quick rant

I have this idea that people are generally good people. I don’t know, maybe I was raised surrounded by loving people that when I witness people being assholes, being disrespectful, or just plain mean it still shocks me. I’m not saying that EVERYONE is evil or that I’m a good person but as much as possible I try not to be an ass to people I know and to the strangers who accidentally bump into me while walking down the street. But lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of errr.. negativity. Sure, they may be having a bad day, but man can you not take it out on me?

European tour begins tonight! Flying to London then on to Prague for a few days, which I have heard so many good things about. We finished out second subject today and I’d have to say it was an incredible learning experience…I’m inspired to travel out of my comfort zone and report from these places.

Finally we have a well deserved break, back to travelling! Will update soon…

the order of things and the dependability is amazing here. full stop.

i’ll give a few examples.

1. the good old case with my residence permit. i didn’t get it when i thought i was supposed to get it. on a wednesday afternoon i went to “skat” which is the state registry office (public domain), they told me it’s not ready yet but i will get it by the end of the week. it came by post friday morning.

2. the CPR number (CNP in romania) – i went to the “raadhus” (city hall), i filled out my name, birth date and address on a form, gave the lady a photo of myself and a she took a copy of my passport. this was on a monday; she told me i will get my CPR number by mail the next wednesday. tuesday morning it was on my doorstep. she also told me i would get my yellow card (health insurance card for which i chose my doctors when giving her the papers for the CPR) one week after i get my CPR, also by mail. compared to this, i got the card 2 days after i got my cpr (the cpr was already imprinted on the card along with the doctors’ name)

3. bank account. i went to the bank, opened an account in 1 minute, the lady told me i would get my e-banking instructions in 2 days by mail – in english, because i am, after all a foreign citizen. this was on a friday. I got my e-banking id on tuesday, the active card on wednesday(today) and i should get the mastercard in a couple of days (10 day limit). i promised to update this post, so here it is: i got my mastercard today (thursday, oct 1), a couple of days earlier than the deadline….

4. you get on the bus in the back and you get off in the front. period.

5. if a place opens at 20.00, it opens at 20.00.

etc etc.

ps: sorry if it seems cocky, it’s just amazing that things can work well…there is hope

The subject we have been doing for the past few weeks has really got me thinking about reporting from a war-torn country. Would I ever do it? Where would I go? Yesterday we had a lecture by a former student at DSMJ who just spent 8 months in Bangladesh reporting on climate change. It amazes me that a student who has interned at one of the most prestigious news organisations in Denmark decided to pack his bags and ship off to a faraway land, all out of his own pocket. What he indicated to us is that there’s money out there to be had…in the forms of grants from the university and also the government. I think it would be a worthwhile thing to do…now he has a full body of work that he can show future employers and some of the pictures and stories he showed us were quite amazing.

I think that’s the amazing thing about journalism…where ever you are, there are stories to be written and told.

Spent another week researched and writing stories about Somalia. Skype never ceases to amaze me…I called 2 Somali journalists yesterday and it just occurred to me how easily we can write stories without leaving our desks.

Tomorrow we are going to Legoland bright and early at 8.30am so hopefully will update with some wicked photos!

before you ask the question. yes, there is a deer park in aarhus. smack in the city, on the seaside, in a forest. and did i mention in the city.

ok, so to sum up. there is aarhus. there are lots and lots of green spaces in the city. there are lots of forest patches in the city, and some of them next to the seaside.

now, in one of these forest patches, there are cute little deers roaming free. the reservation is surrounded by double fences, otherwise, it’s free to enter and it is open every day. the deers are in their natural surroundings, …. but before turning this post into a commercial, i’ll post a couple of nice pics as usual

I’m gonna start this post by asking your forgiveness.

I was out the day before yesterday with my camera. Unfortunately for you guys I also had company and so while I was snapping photos of the pieces I saw, I was also keeping track of and participating in a conversation so I didn’t even think of writing down the location when I took a pic. However, I CAN tell you that they’re were all taken somewhere in downtown Aarhus. Around Åboulevarden, Nørreport, Vesterbro Torv, Ny Munkegade and so on.

So far this is my favorite piece from Mormor. For 3 reasons: The location, the message and the size. It’s the biggest Mormor piece I’ve found so far, It’s located high up on the side of a building near Biocity and then the message: ‘Unge mand. Har du husket at lave din gadekunst idag?’

Not much variety, but what the hell.

At least I remember this one since I pass it almost daily. It’s found at Ny Munkegade near that white Youth Christian Something Something-building that’s just begging to be turned into a stencil.

I failed miserably in jotting down the location, so you’ll have to snoop around downtown Aarhus by yourself, if you wanna enjoy it in person.

Motive appears to be a butterfly or a moth. Possibly inspired by Flottenheimer? Or perhaps the other way around.
