Truly Wonderful! Someone has created a mash-up fan-trailer for the next Batman movie. It features Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Johnny Depp as The Penguin and The Joker, respectively. Both actors have been tethered to rumors that they are attached to the newest project despite the fact that Nolan himself hasn’t even publically announced his involvement. Regardless, this trailer is SO good (I still believe there is an art to trailer-makin’) and it makes me PRAY that Nolan goes ahead with a Depp/Hoffman pairing. It will take these two together to try and accomplish what Ledger and Eckhart pulled off. So, without further ado, my Bat-dream movie!

P.S. Also, if you checked out the previous post on Nick’s Commercials and realized that all of the Youtube links were unembeddable, I apologize, I found out too late. You can still use the links above them or just click the links to their Youtube pages.

Difficile crederci. Basti pensare che la prima delle action figures uscita in esclusiva sul sito Mattycollector.com cioè Joker versione rapina in banca (Joker as Gotham City thug, foto a sinistra) oggi, a più di un mese dal lancio, è ancora disponibile e non sold out (i personaggi di altre serie, come ad esempio i MOTU Classics di He-Man & company, vanno sold out in pochi giorni, spesso anche in un solo giorno)! Le notizie sono due:

- le prossime action figures saranno vendute a 15 dollari e non a 20 dollari;

- 15 Dicembre: Survival Suit Bruce Wayne
- 15 Gennaio: Harvey Dent
- 15 Febbraio: The Joker with Missile Launcher
- 15 Marzo: Scarecrow
- April 15: Batman (Night Vision)
- 17 Maggio: Two-Face

I’m not so excellent at movie reviews. Mostly because I like to discuss all the plot points and um SPOILER ALERT ruining the movie does not make a good review. I am so anti-spoiler that I don’t even read movie reviews before seeing movies. Howevs, after I’ve seen the movie I really want to talk about it. So then I start googling reviews to see if people agreed with me, to see if someone out there wrote something that crystallizes why I’m thinking, or to figure out that plot point that confused me. (It’s all about me. Obviously.)

The other thing I do is talk about the movie. Blah blah blah blah blah. Especially if I can find someone who didn’t see, who won’t see it because then I can tell them alllllllll about it. I’m your new best friend.

So, what better place to put these thoughts, these blah blah blahs, than here? I’m not only your new best friend, I’m your Hero. You’re welcome. I’m calling these UnReviews because they’re not reviews. And they are FULL of SPOILERS. Let me say that louder, like Ashley does.

SPOILERS!

So, I saw Love Happens last weekend at our dollar theater and I liked it! I realized when the movie started that I didn’t actually know anything about it. I mean, there was a Dead Wife Plot Line. I HATE those! So sad! But I powered through and it wasn’t bad. It wasn’t even what I expected (from a dead wife plot line).

See Eckhart (swoon) was this famous guy and he was famous because he wrote a book called A Okay about dealing with grief. He leads workshops and stuff to help people. At first you think he’s going to be a douchebag because he’s famous and taking advantage of these people, but he’s actually for real legit. He is helping them! Through their grief! Awwww.

I mean, the movie was positive and encouraging!

Twist though: he never actually has dealt with his own grief. His big flaw is that he lies about how his wife dies because he feels so responsible. (Car accident. Totally unavoidable. No one was responsible. Heart breaking.)

So he meets Jen on his trip to do a workshop and it’s the first time he’s noticed a girl in the three years since his wife died. And she has a flower shop (awesome) and she helps him deal with his shit and pushes him to deal with his grief and stuff. It’s so good.

In the end he has fixed everything up, and he’s got the awesome flower girl, AND he signs a TV deal to make him even more famous. But it’s not selling out. That’s the great thing about this movie, there is no dichotomy. He’s not in it for the money, but he gets the money which is awesome, and he’s still helping people. And now with the TV mega deal he can help even more people! (I would totally watch his show, by the way.)

I was so pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was sweet and funny and totally un-douchey. So many romantic comedies are about one or both of the characters being douchebags and then changing. I prefer my movies douchbag free. Win win for this.

I just watched one of the worst movies ever. I share my opinion only because I want you to watch it as well and see if you relate or if you are repulsed. Some of you might’ve seen it before. The title sounded familiar and its for that reason that I let the movie take my evening away from me. There was an award given to the filmmaker. It was released in 1997. I usually don’t blast movies because they are supposed to leave you in a mood. The director and writer don’t do a good job of potraying the comedy to this dark comedy though, and as a result it comes off as a serious film, and leaves a bad taste in the viewers mouth. Do not let your girlsfriends watch this movie. It will only add to the man hate already happening. This is fuel to the fire. That said, if you do watch it, try to figure out which of the two guys you are more like, Chad or Howard, and get back at me.

I might have to start a new column where I share these discoveries with you. This is an insult to misogynists everywhere. Not approved.

In The Company Of Men

The Wiki Below explains the plot better than I could: Synopsis

Chad (Eckhart) and Howard (Malloy) are two middle management employees at a corporation, temporarily assigned to a branch office away from home for several weeks. Embittered by bad experiences with women, they form a revenge scheme to find an insecure woman, romance her simultaneously, and then break up with her at the same time. Chad, who is cruel, manipulative, duplicitous, and abusive to his subordinates, is the originator and driving force behind the scheme, while Howard is the more passive of the two, which leads to a later conflict with the scheme. Chad decides upon Christine (Edwards), a deaf coworker who is so self-conscious that she wears headphones so people, thinking that she is listening to music, are compelled to get her attention visually or tactically without immediately learning that she is deaf. Chad and Howard decide to each ask her out, and over the course of several weeks, date her simultaneously. Chad eventually sleeps with her, and Christine falls in love with him. When Christine eventually breaks this news to Howard, Howard tells Christine the truth about their scheme, and tells her that he loves her. Christine is shocked by the revelation, and refuses to believe that Chad would do this. When she confronts Chad, Chad admits the truth. Christine angrily slaps Chad, but Chad is unashamed of his behavior, and cruelly taunts Christine, who collapses into tears after he leaves her. Weeks later, Howard confronts Chad back home at his apartment. Chad, despite having previously told Howard that his girlfriend, Suzanne, had left him, shows him that she is still there, asleep in his bed, having never left him. Chad asks Howard how it feels to have truly hurt someone. Howard, who had never done anything like that before, leaves, mortified and nauseated. Howard later sees Christine working at a bank, and tries to speak to her, but she ignores him. He loudly pleads with her to “listen” to him, but his pleas literally fall on deaf ears.
[edit] Reception

The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.[2] The film currently has an 88% Fresh rating at the movie review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, with 46 out of 52 critics rating it “Fresh”.[3]

Nota:9/10

Now I have to first say that the poster and trailer for this movie are both quite deceiving, even the title to a certain extent as well. This is far from being just a romance or romantic comedy movie. It is much deeper and more of a drama than that, which I was quite surprised about. As I really did think it was going to be more about a romance between Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston, but that is more of a side story which is quite a disaster at times. Yes, I did not read the plot before I went to see the movie.

Burke (Aaron Eckhart) is a best selling author of a self-help book which turned him into a guru, after the death of his wife. This was his way of coping and trying to help others to cope with loss in their life, but has he actually conquered coping with the loss in his life? On a trip to Seattle (incidentally, where his wife was from and her parents still live their) he notices a woman who is a florist in the hotel and is totally intrigued by her, Eloise (Jennifer Aniston). They keep bumping into each other and he attempts to date her, which goes rather wrong as he is not used to dating anymore at all.

The comedy factor is definitely brought in by Judy Greer (who really is just brilliant in which ever movies she pops up in) as Marty a girl who works in Eloise’s flower shop. With her little comments towards Eloise and just being rather random and strange, I did find myself actually laughing out loud at her comments. Martin Sheen made a few appearances playing Burke’s father in-law and was involved in a very emotional scene at the end, which found myself and friend crying with the emotions being shown on the screen.

Another side note of a story was Walter (John Carroll Lynch) who attended the seminar in order to get some help following the death of his son. I really did find his whole story heart wrenching as it was just so emotional and sad. But also nice at the same time, when he was convinced to live again in memory of his son. Especially the home depot scene in which the whole group help him pick items to start up his business again. Burke eventually admits to everyone that he has not dealt with his own grief and still has fear, which causes the big scene at the end when he eventually finds the release he should have had sometime in the previous three years.

As I have already mentioned that this film was a lot deeper than I expected, it really did bring a few thinking points about how you can manage to get on with your life when you lose someone who means so much to you, and was in your life everyday. Trying to figure out how long you should take to get over them, and if you are cheating on them by moving on with your life.

Performance wise, I really thought John Carroll Lynch was just fantastic and developed over the whole movie. Aaron Eckhart really impresses me more and more each time I see him in a movie, he seems to keep pulling out brilliant performances in many different ways. Jennifer Aniston was not in the movie enough for me really (yes, I am one of those fans from her time as Rachel in Friends) to make a massive impact her character was not really looked into enough. I also have to admit that I got rather excited when I saw Joe Anderson, who I loved in “Across the Universe” but he was only seen once, I was hoping he would be in it for quite a while but was not that lucky.

Directed by Scott Hicks — Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, Abigail Breslin

RATING: 6/10

Click Here for the original review

BOTTOM LINE: “No Reservations” has a subtle European sensibility with beautiful images and pacing, which works in its favour in the first half, particularly with its likeable lead actors and plot set-up. Unfortunately, the film meanders along aimlessly to a ho-hum climax in the second half due to weak scripting and dramatic direction.

THE GOOD: The first half of “No Reservations” has a subtle, emotional and intellectual style that is very refreshing for a ‘Hollywood’ film. There are moments of genuine emotion as Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones) becomes the guardian of her niece Zoe (Abigail Breslin) after her mother, and Kate’s sister, dies in a terrible car accident. Watching control-freak Kate lose her sense of self-control while trying to maintain her schedule as head chef at a popular restaurant is exquisitely handled by director Scott Hicks, as is the performance of Breslin as Zoe who proves to be a wonderful child actor. Kate’s life changes further when to bring up the slack in the restaurant, her boss hires a co-head chef in Nick (Aaron Eckhart), who is for all intents and purposes the exact opposite to Kate in terms of personality and temperament. Seeing this as encroaching on her turf, Kate opposes Nick at every turn, becoming more frustrated while simultaneously not doing a great job as Zoe’s guardian. Eventually, Nick helps both Kate and Zoe to get back on their feet with his charm and good nature. “No Reservations” does not set out to be anything grandiose, nor should it as its subtle approach is quite pleasing to watch. Director Scott Hicks coaxes some excellent performances out of his cast, and he also composes some beautiful and rich images that are elegantly edited together. “No Reservations” is a nice film, with a well executed first half.

THE BAD: The film unfortunately starts to fall apart in the second half, thanks largely to what looks like indecisiveness on the part of the writers and director in terms of where the story should go. The film begins to meander aimlessly without offering any sort of real climax aside from the obligatory happy ending. Tensions and conflict that arise in the first half or not resolved; the B-story with Kate’s amorous neighbour, or her fight with her boss at the restaurant when Kate has Nick removed from the kitchen permanently. There’s also a “Child Services” angle where Kate is threatened to have Zoe taken away from her if she does not stop taking her to the restaurant every night that is never resolved. The film leads you in to thinking that the story will bring these conflicts to a head at some point in the second half but nothing materialises, leaving a film that does not end up going anywhere aside from the obligatory, and very arbitrary happy ending where everyone lives happily ever after. As a result, you leave this film wondering if you actually experienced anything at all in the lives of these characters and their ‘story’.

If you’ve seen the trailer, the poster or even read the title, you know instantly what this film is about. But yet I still enjoyed it!

‘Love Happens’ – a film about two people not expecting to fall in love who bump into each other, there’s a spark, a bit of a bumpy road but eventually…well, maybe…there is a trend recently to mess with formula (even though most of the time it’s an annoying disapointment).

So if it has a formulaic plot and easily ticks all the usual boxes for a rom-com-drama, why is it still quite good? Because it’s a film that’s more about the journey than the destination! I know it sounds cheesy and cliche but honestly, there’s so many good/interesting ideas you almost don’t realise it’s following the formula. It’s like going for a day out at Alton Towers (stick with me here). You’ve made the same journey loads of times before, probably used the same car and when you’re there, the layout and 95% of the rides are exactly the same as last time. But it’s the different people you go with, the weather and how you get there that makes it fun!

The lead actors are strong, not pushing boundaries but very good. The interesting quirk that Jennifer Anistons endearingly different female lead has that gets Aaron Eckharts attention, is actually interesting instead of just being random for the sake of it. The supporting actors are good with sub-plots that make you genuinally care. The way it’s shot makes it feel big yet intimate at the same time, which perfectly reflects the nature of the story. And the sound track hits mainstream notes whilst still feeling indie and different.

It’s not a classic and can be enjoyed just as much if not alot more on DVD vs the cinema, but it’s the best rom-com-drama Ive seen for a while. Its a good date movie, will make you laugh and maybe cry…and anything with Jed Bartlet in it is worth a look. 3.5/5 stars

Parental advisory: there’s no violence, sex or nudity, but there are a number of mild swear words and blasphemy through out. This means it does justify it’s 12A rating.

A friend and I went to see the movie Love Happens starring Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston, and while it wasn’t really what I expected I still enjoyed it.

The movie has been greeted with generally negative reviews — and to some extent the reviews are correct. This movie somehow morphs itself into a romantic comedy by the time it’s over, when it seems like it spent a good deal of time trying not to be just that.

For those unaware of the premise of the film, Eckhart’s character plays a self-help author conducting a grief seminar, and Aniston plays an eccentric florist who helps him finally confront the death of his own wife.

Yes, at the end of the movie Eckhart and Aniston share a kiss, but in my opinion that doesn’t mean that the movie took the easy way out by following rom-com standards. I like it that they waited until the end of the movie before they kissed. They had shared a few awkward dates and a grand adventure together before truly pursuing any romantic chemistry.

The moral of this story is that you can become trapped in your grief and your life can become not just stagnant but immobilized. In order to move on with your life, you have to learn to let go. The usual words of wisdom concerning death and dying.

The movie itself is less about that chemistry and more about confronting grief and the mourning process. In that aspect, I thought it really wasn’t a bad movie at all. If it had a different title (Death Happens?) and maybe had excluded the kiss at the end of the movie, maybe it wouldn’t have received such a bad critical reception. But give it a chance — I liked it. At the very least, it’s a must-see for Jennifer Aniston fans.

With such crazily photogenic actors as Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston, how could you possibly go wrong with a romance movie? Love Happens (see trailer here) is the story of Dr. Burke Ryan (Eckhart), a florist named Eloise (Aniston), their chance meeting in Seattle and the impact each has on the life of the other.

Dr. Ryan, successful author of a book “A-Okay” that has spawned a wildly successful seminar series and made him a celebrity, is on the brink of a huge multimedia deal, arranged for him by his friend and publicist played by Dan Fogler. The book is purportedly a roadmap that lays out how to get over the death of a loved one and move on with life. Its principles are laid out in the chapters referred to as the film progresses. Dr. Ryan helps people deal with their grief and move through it to a point of acceptance and the ability to go forward. However, Ryan himself has never been able to get over the death of his wife and his public persona is a sham. The movie is the story of his struggle to reconcile his public persona with his authentic self.

Enter Eloise, a woman who has repeatedly chosen to be in emotionally abusive relationships, who recognizes Ryan’s pain and helps him work towards reconciliation with his loss, and with his deceased wife’s family.

Delightful as it is to watch these outstandingly pretty and handsome actors on the screen, the film is a predictable tearjerker. While the storyline was okay, it was quite forgettable. In a few weeks from now, all I’ll be able to remember is how cute Aniston looked, how good Eckhart looked, and that the movie had something to do with people dying.

Sorry, this one just didn’t do it for me. On the Annie’s Closet hanger rating, it rates only two out of five hangers.

Until next time, Annie’s Movie Closet is closed.

Update, 10/24/09. I was wrong about what I’d remember of this movie “a few weeks from now.” What I keep thinking about is why on earth Eloise had that whacky habit of vandalizing the hotel for which she provided floral services by writing obscure words on the walls behind paintings. What would possess someone to take a pink marker and write “quidnunc” or “poppysmic” on the hotel walls? I mean in real life, the security cameras would have recorded her doing it and she would have lost her contract with the hotel. This is what I’m thinking about two weeks later. If anyone can explain the whole quidnunc and poppysmic thing to me, I’d love to hear it. I’ve looked the words up and know what they mean, but why was this otherwise sane and normal, apparently very sweet and successful businesswoman indulging in this odd graffiti habit? [Okay, I admit it, I think too much...]
