2 of my best friends are coming today. As I’ve said before, I have a really tight knit circle

2 of my best friends are coming today. As I’ve said before, I have a really tight knit circle of friends. They are all my buddies from Minneapolis, we’ve been friends for about 13 or so years. We are all scattered about now and only a few remain in Minneapolis but we are really good about planning holidays and going to visit each other and what not. It’s awesome whenever we get to spend time with each other. I know that my relationship with them is what makes me a better person. It sounds sappy and corny but when my parents moved to Bangladesh when I was younger and I was nowhere near my brothers and sisters that do live in the states, these people were my family and that’s why I gush about them constantly. They helped me realise how awesome friendship is and what it means to be a good friend. My weekend will be filled with lots of hanging out and yummy meals and we all know that’s all I live for these days. LOL.

Tunes:
Metrik – Forward Approach (track is in player)

Eros & Surak – End of Time (track is in Eros player)

When I first started doing this oldie section I didn’t want to do all the obvious classics first. Now I’m just absent minded and forget to include them period.
Today’s Oldie:
Shy Fx feat. UK Apache – Original Nuttah – S.O.U.R. 1994
This track is so ridiculous it makes me speechless. I remember going to raves back then and hearing this on a loud system and just seeing everyone lose their shit, me included. So sick. This is one record I unfortunately do not own. I’m gonna look for a copy after I finish this post even though I think it’s blasphemous if you own a copy and dare sell it. This track is so the essence of my introduction to jungle. Big big big ups to Shy Fx for this one.

I have to admit that i´m really into dnb music, this genre which emerged in the mid 1990s is characterized by fast breakbeats (typically between 165–185 bpm, occasional variation is noted in older compositions), with heavy sub-bass lines. Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the United Kingdom rave scene. Over the first decade of its existence, the incorporation of elements from various musical genres lent to many permutations in its overall style.

Today i guess the scene is really underground but there is soooo much good dnb being produced nowadays with artist like Calibre, dBridge, Marcus Intalex, Lynx, Kemo, Aaron Jay, High Contrast, Doc Scott etc. The trend today is more to the deeper sound.

One of the best places to get going in listening to dnb is to visit www.breaksblog.biz where you will find hours and hours of studio and live mixes from diffrent artist, please give it a chance you want regret it!

It is amazing to me that I have naturally eased into my senior citizen status. The funniest part is that it doesn’t even bother me anymore. LOL. I don’t really like to go out. I prefer making dinners with my friends at each others houses instead of going out to the bar. I can’t be arsed to talk to people I don’t know. The list goes on. I am comfortable with my new status now where as before I think I was a bit frightened by it. I’ve had a good run.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I’m never going out again, it was more of an observation of my recent behaviour. I used to go out at least 3 to 4 times a week, now I’m down to maybe 1 outing and I have no qualms about spending the whole weekend without setting foot in a bar. Yesterday I came home from the gym, made honey dijon chicken with roasted potatoes and asparagus, talked on the phone, watched some telly and then went to bed and was as happy as a clam with my activities. Whereas if that was me circa 2002 I would be trying to find something to do and would be lucky if I made it home before 4am… (On a weeknight!! Clutch the pearls!)

Aaron Jay mixes everything from Photek to Commix to Dave Owen for the second Influence Records Podcast. You guessed it, this podcast is filled with mostly future soul and liquid funk. What can I say, its the lighter side of dnb thats actually interesting these days. Another reason this mix is a good look is because it features 2 tunes from Indy’s own Dave Owen. He recently brought the heat closing for Dieselboy @ Talbott Street on December 11th. Hit the jump for a tracklist.

Yesterday was pretty fucking cool. Yay Obama! I know people don’t like it when you stuff politics down their throats so that’s all I’m going to say about it.

I’m actually considering going to Lava tonight. I said considering… LOL. I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately. Raving out just doesn’t seem to be on my agenda these days. I really have to get my rowdy ass in gear. I will be attending Junglefly on thursday though so that should make up for it. Anything that has the headline “a liquid funk dnb revival session!” you know I’ll be at.

I gotta catch up on some mixes so I don’t have any new tunes to chat about today. I’ve been procrastinating again… Surprise surprise. There must be some deep seeded issue that I’m not dealing with cuz I’ve been taking procrastinating to a whole new level lately!

Today’s Oldie:
M-Beat feat. General Levy – Incredible – Renk 1994 I couldn’t have an oldie section without putting this track in there. I remember hearing this track non stop when I was in London. It was fucking everywhere. If you didn’t like it, they were going to make you like it. LOL. Does anyone actually know what General Levy is saying besides “wicked wicked junglist massive” and “incredible?” You know that you can rely on me to make up a bunch of lyrics.

I downloaded this podcast ages ago but only actually got to listen to it last night. Really great tracks. I was completely entranced as I was listening to it.

Toodles

Isn’t hullabaloo a word that everyone uses? My coworker was dying of laughter when I used it on saturday and I could swear it’s a regular word that everyone uses but maybe not. I just don’t remember it being a strictly British term. Now he won’t stop using it. He doesn’t even care what it means, he just throws it into every sentence. LOL.

I had a pretty good weekend. Westfest was fun. Went to the Hatcha show on Friday. Great music. Hatcha was just killing it. I love dubstep. It’s my little treat to myself cuz it’s not completely part of my being like dnb is so every little event I got to or mix I download I cherish immensely. I’m so cheesy but I can’t help it. I just love dirty basslines.

Worked at Adidas on saturday. I only have two shifts left there. Eek. I thought it was more than that! I have no desire to work there anymore but when discussing my final shifts with my boss, the finality of it kinda freaked me out. I’ve worked there for 3 years. That store is very much a part of my life. I’m really good friends with my coworkers and hang out with them quite frequently. Then as I stood around waiting for customers to make decisions about items, waiting to close the store, I remembered why I was quitting and the nostalgia disappeared really quickly!

I’ve just exhausted my retail life. I have no desire to get anyone anything for an hourly wage. Salaries are where it’s at yo! My regular 9 to 5 pays well and is pretty much stress free. I like the idea of getting my work done and then going home. Standing around in a clothing store waiting to help people that come in is definitely not my cup of tea anymore.

It will be weird to have to pay for clothes though. I’ve been getting free clothes for the past 3 years cuz it’s part of our “uniform.” I’ll still get the discount so it’ll be ok and to be honest i’ve kinda outgrown that style. I still like the trainers but I’m gonna be 32 in a couple of months and I’ve figured out that I can’t wear shit with writing all over it or cartoony type characters without feeling a wee bit ridiculous and all the multicoloured items I own now is where it stops, I’m not adding anymore to the collection. I’m sure you thought I was joking when I said I had reached senior citizen status, well I wasn’t at all.

I bought some records this past weekend. Managed to buy some that were on my wish list so that made me happy.

Don’t really have any dnb news today. I kinda lazed out this weekend and didn’t even really listen to music, just read and watched tv.

Toodles

I am not ridiculously gadget oriented. I like them but I’m clumsy and I break stuff all the time so there’s no use in getting excited about a new toy when I know there’s a 98.27% chance it’ll be broken soon. Where am I going with this? My ipod. No it’s not broken. I just have a shuffle and I got that for a Christmas present from my boss cuz I can guarantee you that I wouldn’t buy one. Surprisingly I still have it 2 years later. The only reason it’s not broken is because it’s obviously drop proof… made up word alert. Thanks folks, my dictionary will be out next year. I drop that thing at least six times a day. I’m surprised I haven’t stepped on it. I’m babbling. Basically I love my ipod because I can store mixes on it. I don’t have a single lone song on my ipod which most of my non-electronic music loving friends find quite funny. It’s just chocablock full of mixes. When I used to bring my ipod to work at Adidas, I would put on some songs that I wouldn’t mind hearing at work so I could join the ipod rotation but now that I only work there once a week, I put the kibosh on that plan and now it’s mix city!

To keep up with my dnb obsession I am constantly in need of mixes to listen to. Breaksblog definitely takes care of that for me. There’s always a ton of good mixes on there. Another one I’ve recently started frequenting is Drum & Bass Links cuz not only do they have loads of mixes but they also have good variety. To be honest I go all over. I’ve become pretty adept at searching for mixes so even though those two are my regular go-to sites I tend to go anywhere and everywhere cuz I’m a fiend.

One mix I’ve had on heavy rotation is Aaron Jay’s April mix for Breaksblog. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve actually not been too happy with the past few Aaron Jay mixes. Last year I feel like they were really good and I would download without hesitation and then they just got really bloody boring. The tracklist would look decent and then I would find myself fast forwarding through the mix. This one I’m really into though. The tracklist is nice and it’s just an all round nice public transportation mix. I would never dream of driving my car to work as I work downtown so the ratings for most mixes that I put on my ipod are on a “public transportation mix” scale. We’ll have to get to the “partying at my house while doing laundry or pretending to clean” scale some other day.

Enjoy.
