Seule voix discordante : l’ancien Premier ministre Sélim Hoss.

Published: May 14, 2009

JERUSALEM — The prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, met on Thursday with King Abdullah II of Jordan, who urged the Israeli leader to commit to a two-state solution with the Palestinians, according to news reports.

Mr. Netanyahu made the unannounced trip to Jordan hours before he was to meet in Nazareth with Pope Benedict XVI, and days ahead of a pivotal meeting with President Obama, scheduled to take place in Washington on Monday. It will be the first meeting between the Israeli and American leaders since the conservative-leaning Mr. Netanyahu took office six weeks ago.

The Obama administration has pronounced the two-state solution — the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel — to be the only solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Mr. Netanyahu has so far refused to publicly endorse the notion of a sovereign Palestinian state, a point of possible friction with Washington.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Mr. Netanyahu, said that the Israeli prime minister and the Jordanian monarch discussed bilateral issues and the peace process with the Palestinians. On the subject of Palestinian statehood, Mr. Regev said only that “the Prime Minister expressed his view that he is committed to moving forward and is committed to tangible steps that will benefit people on the ground.”

A statement issued by the royal palace after the meeting and quoted by news organizations said that the king had also asked Mr. Netanyahu to accept the Arab peace initiative, which offers Israel normal ties with the Arab world in return for a full withdrawal to its pre-1967 boundaries and a solution for the Palestinian refugees of 1948.

Mr. Netanyahu has emphasized the Palestinians’ need for rapid economic development. While stating his readiness for political talks, he has been less eager to define the desired outcome.

By meeting with King Abdullah, and earlier this week with the president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheik, Mr. Netanyahu seemed to want to pursue a regional approach that would pit moderate forces in the region against those that reject Israel outright, like Iran and its proxies.

Mr. Regev said that Mr. Netanyahu wanted to see Egypt and Jordan, countries that already signed peace treaties with Israel, playing an “enhanced role” in the Israeli-Palestinian process.

At a news conference in Egypt on Monday, the Israeli leader expressed appreciation for Egypt’s “assistance in the struggle with the extremists and the terrorists who threaten both the whole region and the peace which we all desire.”

Israel and Jordan have a history of cooperation on security issues. Relations were strained in 1997, during Mr. Netanyahu’s last term as prime minister, after a failed assassination attempt against a senior Hamas leader, Khaled Meshal, carried out by Israeli agents on Jordanian soil.

Times James Hider in Jerusalem America’s spy chief was sent on a secret mission to Israel to warn it

Times

James Hider in Jerusalem

America’s spy chief was sent on a secret mission to Israel to warn its leaders not to launch a surprise attack on Iran without notifying the US Administration.

As Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, prepares to visit Washington, it emerged yesterday that Leon Panetta, the head of the CIA, went to Israel two weeks ago. He sought assurances from Mr Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, the Defence Minister, that their hawkish new Government would not attack Iran without alerting Washington.

Concerns have been rising that Mr Netanyahu could launch a strike on Tehran’s atomic programme, in the same way that Israel hit Saddam Hussein’s Osirak reactor in 1981. Israel has been preparing for such an eventuality. It has carried out long-distance manoeuvres and is due to hold its largest civil defence drills this summer. The country’s leaders reportedly told Mr Panetta that they did not “intend to surprise the US on Iran”.

Mr Netanyahu will leave for Washington this weekend. He will meet Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, and Mr Obama, whom he will try to convince of the need for tougher action against Iran. Mr Obama favours trying to engage Tehran, but his efforts have been received coolly by President Ahmadinejad.

The Israeli leader is expected to insist that the US stays focused on Iran, rather than tackling stalled talks with the Palestinians.

Mr Netanyahu has held meetings with Arab leaders this week, including President Mubarak of Egypt and King Abdullah of Jordan. Both Sunni leaders share Israel’s fears of a resurgent Shia Iran.

In Aqaba, Jordan, yesterday King Abdullah told Mr Netanyahu there could be no regional peace without a Palestinian state. So far Mr Netanyahu has refused to commit to a two-state solution. Instead, he has talked about developing the Palestinian economy, with Palestinians having only limited sovereignty. That view is likely to cause confrontation with Mr Obama.

Mr Netanyahu raised the issue of Iran during a private meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in Nazareth yesterday. “I asked him as a moral figure to make his voice heard loud and continuously against the declarations coming from Iran of their intention to destroy Israel,” he said. .

“I think we found in him an attentive ear.” The Pope, who reiterated his calls for peace yesterday, did not give an account of the meeting.

Times

UN Security Council statement comes a week before President Obama due to hold first meeting with new Israeli Prime Minister

James Bone in New York and James Hider in Jerusalem

The UN Security Council called yesterday for diplomatic action to achieve a two-state solution in the Middle East after King Abdullah of Jordan warned in The Times of a possible war within 18 months.

David Miliband, the British Foreign Secretary, said that the Security Council meeting reflected King Abdullah’s call for urgent moves towards peace.

“Debate has moved from seeking a solution between two states to a debate about the whole regional stability of the Middle East,” Mr Miliband said.

Susan Rice, Washington’s UN Ambassador, said: “We share a sense of urgency. This is a moment that should not be lost. That is why the United States and others are redoubling their efforts to achieve a lasting two-state solution.”

The Security Council statement, at a summit for foreign ministers called by Russia, comes a week before President Obama is due to hold a crucial first meeting with Binyamin Netanyahu, the new Israeli Prime Minister.

Ms Rice told the UN council that the US would incorporate the Arab Peace Initiative, formulated at a Beirut summit in 2002, into its peace efforts. Israel boycotted the UN meeting, saying that it did not believe the involvement of the Security Council “contributes to the political process in the Middle East”.

Israel reacted cautiously to King Abdullah’s call in the The Times for it to embrace the Arab League peace plan because it offered the Jewish state full recognition by 57 Muslim countries.

Israel has always been wary of the Arab League plan, denouncing the way it was presented as a take it or leave it package in which Israel would gain automatic normalisation with the 22-member Arab League if it allowed millions of Palestinians to return to their homes inside Israel.

The package also required it to withdraw to the pre-1967 amnesty lines, relinquishing the Old City of Jerusalem.

Recent leaks have suggested that a revised Arab plan could be submitted with US backing, dropping the right of return clause that Israel says would end its status as a Jewish state.

Yigal Palmor, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, said that Amr Moussa, the head of the Arab League, had “said that there’ll be no change in the text and nobody’s going to make an amendment. I don’t see any sweetened Arab peace plan being presented to Obama any time soon. If Amr Moussa said no, then it is no”.

Questions remained in Israeli minds about the King’s prediction of war within 12 to 18 months if no progress was made towards peace.

Mr Palmor said that the phrasing could be construed as a threat.

“It means we are not engaged in a territorial conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, but between Israel and 57 nations. Put like that, it’s a conflict of a whole different order,” he said.

Times

Richard Beeston

How has the Pope’s visit gone? I

think it’s gone extremely well. I said to His Holiness that this is the right time. You’re coming here on a spiritual pilgrimage with a message of peace … as a signal of hope for what we’re planning to do on the political aspect. It is all part of one major effort. This is a critical crossroads that we need to take advantage of.

So this is good timing between your visit to Washington and before President Obama’s visit to Cairo?

I concentrated in my discussions with him on his being the spiritual dimension while I work on the politics of this. The trickle-down effect to the people has always been the challenge. So the message of reconciliation, the message of hope for the future of Jerusalem comes at a perfect time because there has been a flurry of activity over the past six weeks, after the Doha summit and what the Arab nations are doing as part of the Arab peace proposal. [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu’s expected visit to Washington next week will be the turning point. Obviously, I’m sure President Obama is keeping his cards close to his chest until he hears what Prime Minister Netanyahu has to say. I think the President is committed to the two-state solution. He is committed to the two-state solution now. He feels the urgency of the need to move today. Because we’re not working for peace in a vacuum, with others not there. So this is a critical moment.

A cynic might say, we’ve had the Annapolis peace conference, we’ve had the road map for peace, the Arab initiative, almost a decade with no results. What’s the difference now?

Four or five decades! There are two major factors. We are sick and tired of the process. We are talking about direct negotiations. That is a major point. We are approaching this in a regional context. You could say through the Arab peace proposal. The Americans see this as we do and I think the Europeans. Britain is playing a very vital pro-active role, more than I have ever seen in the ten years of my experience in bringing people together. What we are talking about is not Israelis and Palestinians sitting at the table, but Israelis sitting with Palestinians, Israelis sitting with Syrians, Israelis sitting with Lebanese. And with the Arabs and the Muslim world lined up to open direct negotiations with Israelis at the same time. So it’s the work that needs to be done over the next couple of months that has a regional answer to this — that is not a two-state solution, it is a 57-state solution. That is the tipping point that shakes up Israeli politicians and the Israeli public. Do you want to stay Fortress Israel for the next ten years? The calamity that that would bring to all of us, including the West? This has become a global problem. We are saying to the Israelis that this is an issue that is far bigger than you Israelis and the Palestinians. This is where I think the Obama Administration gets it. I am very, very concerned about having a conference in six months’ time, and another one in a year’s time, that doesn’t work. I think we’re going to have to do a lot of shuttle diplomacy, get people to a table in the next couple of months to get a solution.

So you are front-loading an offer to the Israelis that says if a deal is done, these are the people who will be making peace with you, whom you will be having embassies with and whom you will be trading with?

If you consider that a third of the world does not recognise Israel — 57 nations of the United Nations do not recognise Israel, a third of the world — their international relationships can’t be all that good. More countries recognise North Korea than Israel. That is a very strong statement when we are offering a third of the world to meet them with open arms. The future is not the Jordan river or the Golan Heights or Sinai, the future is Morocco in the Atlantic to Indonesia in the Pacific. I think that’s the prize.

There have been reports that the Americans have asked you to clarify certain parts of the Arab initiative, in particular the status of Jerusalem and the future of Palestinian refugees.

I was very specific in carrying a letter on behalf of the Arab League highlighting the Arab peace proposal, their desire to work with President Obama to make this successful, their commitment to extending the hand of friendship to the Israelis and a lot of other things that we could probably do for the world.

Are these reports malicious? I

t’s hard to say. I’d like to think they’re not malicious, it’s just people with a lot of extra time on their hands. The speculation is very far from reality.

You have a very right-wing Government in Israel which does not even accept a two-state solution. How do you overcome that?

We have to deal with what we’re stuck with. Just because there is a right-wing government in Israel does not mean that we should chuck in the towel. There are a lot of American Jews and Israelis who tell me that it takes a right-wing Israeli government to do it. I said, I hope so! Netanyahu has a lot on his shoulders as he goes to Washington. I think the international atmosphere is not going to be in favour of wasting time; it is going to be very much “we are getting sick and tired of this”. Here is one final opportunity. If the only player in this equation between the West, the Arabs and the Muslims that is not being helpful and is against peace is Israel, then let’s call it for what it is. Let Israel understand that the world sees Israeli policy for what it is.

Have you dealt with Netanyahu before?

I had three months with the overlap [after the death of King Hussein]. These were probably the least pleasant of my ten years. However, a lot has happened in the last ten years and we are looking at the bigger picture, and looking for what’s best for Israel, which I believe is the two-state solution.

How a bout Jerusalem?

It is not an international problem, it is an international solution. Jerusalem unfortunately has been a symbol of conflict for so many centuries. From the start of this new century what we desperately need is for Jerusalem to become a symbol of hope. How do you encourage the three monotheistic religions to make Jerusalem into a pillar for the future of this century? I am sensing a lot more maturity and understanding in these troubled times of cultural and religious suspicions that Jerusalem could be a binder that we need.

Do you think you can bring Syria on board?

The Syrians definitely see the benefit of peace negotiations with Israel, and I’m hoping in my discussions with their foreign minister on my visit to Damascus tomorrow that they understand that this is a regional approach, because I strongly believe that a bilateral approach between Israel and Syria would be used by one or the other side to waste time. I think that this regional approach that Obama is looking at and which is endorsed by all of us, of getting all three of them at the table at the same time, sends a powerful message to Israel and a powerful commitment to solving the Lebanese and Syrian problems at the same time. So there is a tremendous opportunity for Syria to benefit from the regional context of this and ingratiate itself into the West. So it is my real hope that they see how the dynamic approach has changed and they see this as part of a team. There is hope now that it’s a win-win situation for everyone. What’s good for the Palestinians is good for the Syrians, is good for the Lebanese.

Isn’t this a reversal of the traditional policy of Syria of wanting a comprehensive solution?

Well, they said that but they didn’t mean it. The comprehensive approach is the only way.

Netanyahu is going to Cairo and Washington. How do you see the process moving forward?

The critical juncture will be what comes out of the Obama-Netanyahu meeting. If there is procrastination by Israel on the two-state solution or there is no clear American vision for how this is going to play out in 2009, then all the tremendous credibility that Obama has worldwide and in this region will evaporate overnight if nothing comes out in May. All eyes will be looking to Washington in May. If there are no clear signals and no clear directives to all of us, then there will be a feeling that this is just another American government that is going to let us all down.

If you don’t succeed in your peace plans, will it matter?

We’re going to have a war. Leading up to the Lebanese war, I said there was going to be a conflict with Israel. I said it four or five months before. I said it would happen either in Lebanon or Gaza. It was Lebanon. In November, I said there would be another war in Lebanon or Gaza. I thought it would happen when Obama was in office but was surprised by it happening a month earlier. If we delay our peace negotiations, then there’s going to be another conflict between Arabs or Muslims and Israel in the next 12 to 18 months — as sure as the other conflicts happened. So that’s the alternative — to have another round of war, and death and destruction. But its implications now resonate far beyond the Middle East region. There are other challenges in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We have a lot more on our plate to deal with. If the call is in May that this is not the right time or we are not interested, then the world is going to be sucked into another conflict in the Middle East.

from a talk by Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani

Allah made for every sickness a remedy. We must not accept that there any sickness without remedy. The Prophet Muhammad mentioned that for every sickness there is a cure. This is the Prophet to whom Allah gave the power of Isra’a and M’iraj (the Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and then the Heavenly Ascension to the Divine Presence) to go to the Presence of Allah. It was a miraculous event that many did not at first accept until the Prophet gave them proof, telling them what he had seen on the road to masjid al-aqsa in Jerusalem. He told them about the caravans that were due to arrive in Mecca, and they then immediately believed him as no one would know such detail except one who was there. The Prophet was sent by Allah as a mercy, a rahma, to humanity. Every mercy therefore falls under the mercy of the Prophet: health is a mercy, wealth is a mercy, to be in a good position in this life is a mercy, to be in good standing in the hereafter is a mercy, even showers of rain (rahma in Arabic) or snow are mercies. All of this mercy that’s coming, Allah put in the hearts of our master Muhammad and his family, because his family is his blood and his blood is holy. So the one to whom Allah bestowed His Mercy knows what kind of remedy will help against every sickness.

I witnessed many illnesses cured by the remedies prescribed by both my shaykh Abdallah al-Fa’iz al-Daghestani and Grandshaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani. These cures come from the Prophet: it is prophetic medicine that so many people are using today under the names “alternative medicine” or “Chinese medicine”.

Real seclusion bears fruit. A real seclusion is not one that you demand, but one that is demanded of you: where the skaykh calls you out of the blue and says, “You, go to seclusion.” When you are in such a seclusion and training well, becoming more experienced, every sickness comes to you itself and says, “I am this type of sickness and the remedy for me is this.” According to the level of the one performing the seclusion, there will be prescriptions coming from heavenly sources for many difficult medical situations.

One of the most important sicknesses that people are facing today is cancer. I heard, witnessed, and saw from my shaykh (these are three distinct levels) that cancer can be cured and eliminated from a patient, but the patient must accept what they have to do. My sister was a gynecologist, and she had cancer. As a doctor she wasn’t able to accept anything other than what she’d studied. She went to Shaykh Nazim in the late eighties to speak with him about her case. He told her not operate. As a doctor, she insisted on it- she did the operation on her breast and lived 15 years before passing away. My auntie, who was in her early 50s, also had a cancer. She went to Shaykh Nazim and Granshaykh Abdallah for advice. Her doctors had already decided that she needed to have an operation. The night before the operation was to occur, we went to grandshaykh’s house. This was in the 1970s. He told us to take her out of the hospital, that if she didn’t do the operation she would have another 30 years of life. That night we went back to Beiruit and removed her from the hospital. The next morning they were searching for her, not knowing what had happened. She ended up living another 30 years, passing away at age 85. Meanwhile, my sister went through with her operation and lived only another 15 years.

Shaykh Nazim is carrying knowledge of Prophetic medicine that he has inherited by his spiritual connection with the Prophet through the chain of saints. He explained that there is a dormant cancer in every human being. It doesn’t awaken except in certain patients. If we touch the cancer, it will go crazy. Instead of going slowly, if we touch it with a knife the cancer will go wild and spread. He said the best thing is to take onion juice. The Prophet said that although onion and garlic have a bad smell, they are cures for 70 different illnesses that cannot be cured by any other means. So people of Allah recommend onion juice.

Just this past weekend, I was in New York. One of the students brought a lady to me, saying that this was the lady who had cancer before and, thanks be to Allah, she’d been cured. A year before I was in New York, and they had brought to me this lady saying that she had a tumour in her head. She had a child. I told her to drink onion juice. I also read surat al-fatiha (the first chapter of the Koran) seven times onto some water on behalf of Shaykh Nazim, telling her to drink it. One week later she had an x-ray at the hospital and the tumour was gone. It’s not because I read or she took the onion juice, it’s because she believed that it could happen. She believed in Allah and she believed in the Prophet. So a year later I saw her again, and she had been cancer free for the whole time with no operation and no chemotherapy. My recommendation for people with this problem is to take onion juice and to read surat al-fatiha seven times on water, or coffee for example, and drink it. They could alternatively read fatiha seven times and blow on themselves. If they are not able, someone else can read fatiha for them.

May Allah give us healing, shif’a, and give those who are suffering from this sickness healing also, especially Shaykh Nazim`s followers. May Allah make it easy on everyone. He is al-Shafi (The Healer). Ya Rabbi (Oh Lord), You are the One that Cures, there is no one else, we are coming to you, requesting through our master Muhammad and through your saints. We are weak and sinful servants, but we are coming to you. Where else is there to go? Your door is the one people can come to. We are coming to your door asking you to cure every human being, especially those sufferers who have children- to give them happiness in their lives. And to us also, and to our children. Extend our lives to see our master the Mahdi and our master Jesus, for that will be the best time- the golden time. We are asking that Allah will accept from all of us, for there are children here and their supplication is accepted. May Allah for the sake of the saints, our master Muhammad, and ahl bayt (the family of the Prophet) accept from us. Bi hurmati l-habib bi hurmati l-fatihah (by the sanctity of the beloved, by the sanctity of surat al-fatihah)
