When it comes to this weekends live matches, Skybets slogan “it matters more when there’

When it comes to this weekends live matches, Skybets slogan “it matters more when there’s money on” sums it up nicely for me! Whilst it’s great to back the winner between Elgin versus Peterhead, it’s not gonna be too exciting during that final 20mins as your waiting for sky sports news to update your result…………

This weekend live matches should provide us with both entertainment and value! Get the fridge stocked, pack the wife and kids off to the shops, and plank yourself infront of the box- cos this should be a good one!

Aberdeen v’s Rangers (12.45 sky sports 3)

Ok, when I said that we were going to be entertained, we might have to wait until this one is over! Aberdeen always raise their game against Rangers, especially at Pittodrie, with the Gers only managing one win in the last eight trips up north- and I don’t see that stat improving much once this games over!

Like I mentioned earlier in the week, I have no faith in the old firm whatsoever- against anyone! So I don’t see any value in the 8/11 being offered on a blue win. In fact, I’m quite attracted to Aberdeen & the Draw double chance @10/11.

There will most likely be bookings-a-plenty in this one, so the bookies won’t be offering up anything worth having on the bookings index.

My Tip: Under 2.5 goals @4/5

Aston Villa v’s Tottenham (17.30 ESPN)

This is the game of the day, and possibly one of the afternoons hardest results to pick! What I do expect to see are plenty goals, so the 3/5 being offered about over 2.5 goals leaps off the coupon at me!

However,
My tip: Spurs (draw no bet) @ Evns

Everton V’s Liverpool (13:00 Sky sports 1)

If there’s something I hate, it’s trying to deciede how two out of form teams are going to react when they go head to head. Add to the fact that it’s a Mersyside derby, and I expect a tense and free scoring affair. Both of these teams are decidability suspect to me, and fancy niether side to keep a clean sheet. The value bet might be Everton (draw no bet) @6/4, buti f Torres is fit and plays, then I might just fancy Liverpool to edge it. But as we won’t know about his fitness until tomorrow:

My tip: Both teams to score @3/4

Arsenal v’s Chelsea (16:00 Sky Sports 1)

There’s been a lot of talk coming from Arsenal camp that this game may define their season, which I see as just a bit of paper talk, as although it’s a massive tie- it’s nowhere near do or die yet! Is another tough one to call, but i really like the way that Chelsea are playing at the moment, and believe that they have the quality and depth to win out this season. As always, looking for near evens to keep the bankroll building:

My tip: Chelsea (draw no bet) @4/5

It’s been a while since I updated… Maybe because nothing exciting is happening in my world just now… *insert sad face here*
Work is as scintillating as usual, as shown by the 29 games of online scrabble I’ve played in the past seven days. I’m getting good, my win rate is currently 75%. A fair number of those are games with my flatmate who is determined to beat me. We’ve played about 18 games now, and so far she’s come close once. Her obsessive need to defeat me is keeping me slightly more entertained at work though, which is good. I’m scared that if she ever does beat me then she’ll stop playing me and I’ll have nothing to do all day!! Did I mention I’m kinda job-hunting? “But why?” I hear you gasp… And the answer is that even though being paid to play scrabble sounds like the ideal job after a year it loses the initial attraction. I think dogs can smell the waves of paranoid self-doubt emanating from me over the applications I’m preparing though, hell, humans can probably smell it to. But it is better to try and fail then never go for it and sit playing scrabble, waiting for the tiles to spell out words such as ‘embitter’ and ‘resentful’. Which would be impressive actually, considering how they have more than seven letters in them…

In other news, my flat is a secret portal to Antarctica. No, really. At night, in the living room, curled up in front of the heater, wrapped in blankets, wearing a bobble hat, I can see my breath. You go outside and experience a feeling of warmth. At least I don’t have to be concerned about chilling drinks or forgetting to put the milk back in the fridge.

And now back to the multiple games of scrabble I’m playing, oh yes.

There are just 11 journeys to Inverness from Aberdeen Monday-Saturday, and only five on Sundays. If a passenger misses his train, there is good chance that he will have to wait two hours for the next one.

Mike Rumbles, SLD, opened the debate on October 7, regarding Kintore Station and Aberdeen Crossrail. In 2003, a decision was made to reduce the more than two hour route between Aberdeen and Inverness to just 50 minutes, and also to open new stations to help improvement. The reopening of Laurencekirk Station in May, this year, was a success and a grasp of hope for people in the Highlands, the politician said.

He also stated that the lack of interest in this important case is disappointing and that the transport minister`s acknowledgement about the importance of the subject would be ‘a real step-forward.’ Mr Rumbles said that the transport minister has held no discussion on the matter so far, and not even attended significant debates about the issue.

‘I do feel that the people in the North-East deserve a straight answer from our transport minister and I hope we will be able to hear it,’ said Mr Rumbles. He would also welcome funding for the project.

The Aberdeen-Inverness railway is approximately 173km (107miles) long with only a few stations open along. However, this corridor is considered to be of great strategic importance within the Strategic Transport Projects Review, as it connects Aberdeen and Inverness airports as well as the port of Aberdeen with other cities on the route. It also supports the continued economic growth of the two cities and links rural communities with industrial cities.

Alison McInnes, SLD, drew attention to the issue of largely growing traffic in the area. (Between 2002 and 2005 the rise in traffic in the region reached 4.5% per annum).

A study, taken in 2005, on behalf of the Scottish Executive, considered possible changes in the railway system between the two cities. The most important points of the survey were improving journey times and introducing an hourly service from one of the cities to the other.

SNP`s Maureen Watt welcomed Mike Rumbles’ standpoint and called for ‘progress and activity,’ that is, more frequent trains and scheduling changes, after saying that it is sad that under two former transport ministers, the problem could not have been solved.

Stewart Stevenson, minister for transport, infrastructure and climate change, agreed that the current model has to be changed.

This is without a doubt the worst Rangers and Celtic squads that I have seen in the entirety of the

This is without a doubt the worst Rangers and Celtic squads that I have seen in the entirety of the time that I have been old enough to have an opinion that counted! (at 30, that’s 15-20 years in case your wondering)

Gone are the days of who’s best. The winner of the SPL is now determined by who is worst! With the glory times over, Gone are the days of high profile signings and big big money getting thrown about for average players (Flo, Rothental, Bratback). The old firm can no longer even afford to simply buy out all the best players from their lesser competitors in order to maintain the gap (Caldwell, Brown, Boyd, Whittaker, Naismith, Hartley……….. This list could go on a while!).

In fact, during this time when both Rangers and Celtic are struggling domestically, and in Europe- I find the fact that they feel hard done by because of their Premiership rejection absolutely hilarious!

A successful strategy that I have enjoyed this year is to oppose whom ever is play the old firm in Europe – home or away!

We’re now more that a quarter of the way through the Scottish season, and we have 3 points separating the top four teams.

Rangers will struggle to dominate an Aberdeen side, who shall be up for this one (why can’t they raise their game against every other team? – this must frustrate reds fans!). Celtic would normally have their match against St Mirren in the books before kick-off, but such outcomes can no longer be banked upon! Neither side shall be on my coupon this weekend! Gone are the days that I am willing to take odds of 1/3, just to boost the winnings- NO THANK YOU! The bookies must be killing themselves laughing this season!

I fancy Hibs to stuff Falkirk this weekend, & the match up between Dundee Utd and Motherwell will keep both sides in touch of the Glasgow giants, regardless of the outcome. But can any of the teams outside the top 2 sustain a run that we are still talking about in May?

Will this be the year of the underdog- probably not. But my top tip in Scotland for the foreseeable future, is to keep clear of the old firm, because their opposition no longer fear them!!!

Yeah, I skipped College today. There was 2 reasons for it.

1) I am skint and my bus pass ran out yesterday, so physically can’t afford college, unless I chance it with an out of date bus pass. Which I don’t want to do, cause they may just take the pass off me, including my college card. Which they have done before.

2) I was very, very upset yesterday. Im hoping I am just ‘dipping’ because my meds have been changed, but I dont think thats it. I was so close to phoning the Samartians because I just wanted to throw myself of something and end it all. Pretty severe, when you think that the medication is supposed to stop me feeling like that. But after I blogged, I went to the toilets and had a cry.

*sigh*
Anyways. I lay in bed this morning reading Death Note, and feeling sorry for myself. When I am like that, I am better just lying, locked away from everyone, cause I’ll just say something stupid.

I still haven’t done any work, although I sat and drew at my work last night. I say I draw, it wasn’t anything spectacular, but it was all I could do from walking out of my work last night, and never going back. Whats bugging me, is that how am I supposed to make sure I am doing everything for a customer, when the call center manager is on my back telling me to hurry up and get on the next call. If I need to email another department, I can’t. And that is not helping me at all, when I am feeling this stressed.

Just focusing on Saturday, where I’ll be up in Aberdeen with two of my oldest friends, Sharon and Gemma. Its Gemma’s birthday night out. I’m just looking to clear my head, so am really looking forward to it. Its kind of like the light at the end of the tunnel. Reminds me, I need to get Gemma and Sharon bday things on Friday, when I get paid.

“Finally” I hear you all cry, a blog post about running. Today was the official start of my 6 month marathon training programme, everything before today has been about fun! Growing weary of dark nights, wheelie bins and little of note to report on, I’ve opted to do my weekday runs during the day. Today I set off from the office, along the harbour area and down the beach. Boy was it windy, running along the beach away from the wind was a breeze (badoom-tish), the return leg was a lot little more like hard work. I even got passed by saw some other runners, one of which was wearing the most horrendous fluorescent yellow running jacket. Really, he looked like he was off to a 90s rave, all he needed was a whistle and a glowstick. Despite running in a sprawling metropolis unfortunately nothing interesting happened, nothing interesting ever happens when I run, sorry!

I forgot my ipod so instead I’ll finish with a mini rant. Now let me start by saying I absolutely love Christmas: crap TV, presents, loads of food and drink and, of course, booze. However, putting my Christmas decorations in November is a step too far, and that’s exactly what has happened in our office. So now from here until Christmas, and I’m sure into the new year, my eyeballs will be assaulted by the lovely purple and silver themed Christmas decorations we have. Bah humbug!

Some people have already unfortunately lost their car to water and sewage damage. Aberdeen is a smelly place at the best of times let alone when it floods. You do have to ask yourself though (looking at the image) just how did the drivers get into that state?! Did a river break its banks and it flow like a Tsunami?

I really wish people would stop decorating their cars like animals, they may have animal names but that doesn’t give people the right to cover it in fur, add some fake ears and parade around in it, it’s just weird. Even the wheels have hair. I have always had a thing about people in costumes and that goes with anything in a disguise, i once saw a BMW M series in Aberdeen dressed as a cat it had a tail, ears, whiskers and i freaked! Call me crazy, call me weird but there is something very un-natural about designing cars like animals and covering them with fur…chocolate is my only exception!

I wonder if it would be amazing or a waste to race it against a supped-up mini in Aberdeen for example, could you imagine getting that beauty covered in mud and dirt, after all that thorough designing. I am not too sure on the design angle here, i think there may be teeth, a scary face on the wing mirror and i gather it’s been ‘electrocuted’ all over but other than that is that the general gist of the design??!! It’s a bit much for my liking – i just wonder is this car is actually driven or if it’s just for show and tell?!

I have noticed Volkswagen Beetle has been dragged up onto the big screen all over the world. The film ‘Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me’ used the car because it had a very 60’s vibe! Not only that but the Beetle has made quite the impact on the animated screen in ‘The Simpsons’, ‘American Dad’ and ‘Family Guy’, all of which have depicted the car in their series., even animated Mr Bean drives a version of the Beetle, and Ugly Betty. I’m not too sure why this car is so popular, but i do think it has something to do with the unusual shape of the Volkswagen Beetle, Aberdeen is swarming with these little bug cars and too right, they are beautiful, extremely spacious inside and completely unique. They can be a pain to park but just takes practice.

This antique Scottish stool is one unique piece of carpentering. I love it but wonder if it’s actually comfortable to sit on and if there is more than one. Only the Scottish would come up with a sculpted balls and buttocks shaped stool for their kilted lads, and I’m thinking there might just be more than a few kilted lads eagerly awaiting this purchase for xmas. Best not to sit on it when it’s cold i imagine!

It should also come with a cushion insert to make it a unisex seat.

This is the third report for my How Do You Jew? project on Jewish identity. Rose Suttner Barlow grew

This is the third report for my How Do You Jew? project on Jewish identity.

Rose Suttner Barlow grew up a Jewish girl in Apartheid South Africa, a minority within a minority within a minority. Her minority status as a Jew within the white population in overwhelmingly black Africa was obvious. Her minority status within the Jewish community was a result not of demographics, but of the traditionally limited role of women in Jewish life at that time and place. Years later, as the Apartheid system was dismantled in her homeland, Rose learned of a more diverse, inclusive Judaism and gained equal rights as a Jewish woman thousands of miles away in her adopted country, the United States.

South Africa

Rose’s Jewish journey has been a lifelong one, and it has paralleled her physical travels away from her childhood home in a tightly knit Jewish neighborhood in Johannesburg to Cape Town, the DeBeers diamond mines, England, Scotland, and finally to Marin County north of San Francisco, where she has settled to raise her family. As Rose increasingly engaged in the wider, non-Jewish world and encountered diversity that was heretofore unknown to her, she shed many of the communal and ritual aspects of Judaism that had never fully or satisfyingly been incorporated into her identity. It was only once she became a mother and came to live in the liberal, diverse and tolerant Bay Area Jewish community that she found that there was a way back into Jewish life that provided her meaning and purpose.

In many ways, Rose has reinvented herself Jewishly, but she believes she had done so on the basis of a strong cultural foundation. “Even though I was alienated from Jewish communal life [for many years], I was never alienated from my Jewish self,” she says. Rose’s parents became baalei teshuvah when she was in her 20’s and her mother became ill with cancer (she died not long afterwards in 1986), but this was many years after Rose’s experiences growing up with parents who were at the time ethnically and culturally Jewish, rather than shul-going shomrei mitzvot.

A South African farthing from 1960, the year Rose was born

Rose was born in Johannesburg in 1960 to a mother whose intellectually inclined family immigrated to South Africa from Lithuania and Russia during WWI, and a father who came from a more business oriented family that had been in the country for three generations. Her father was a member of the first generation in his family to go to college, becoming an electrical engineer and going into the family business manufacturing car radios (founded by his father who had had no higher education). Rose’s mother, whose own mother had been accepted to medical school and father was a lawyer, studied social work.

As a school girl, Rose attended a whites-only public school with a large Jewish student population owing to the fact that the neighborhood was predominantly Jewish. Her parents did not send her to a cheder or afternoon Jewish studies program, leaving her formal Jewish education to the once a week session in which Jewish children were separated from the other students into their own class (for religious instruction) and given workbooks on Jewish topics from which to teach themselves. The Jewish Board of Deputies had worked out this arrangement with the public school authorities, apparently leaving teachers to instruct the children out of the plan.

Although Rose’s father’s parents went to synagogue regularly (a Modern Orthodox one, which was the normative form of Judaism at the time in this particular community), her parents did not. They did not keep kosher or regularly light the Shabbat candles, but Rose and her younger brother were kept home from school on every Jewish holiday and her brother officially marked his becoming bar mitzvah.

She did participate in the Habonim Zionist youth group for a short time, though she did not attend its summer camp. Nonetheless, Rose developed a strong attachment to Israel from her first visit at the age of thirteen and from her knowledge of her mother’s close relationship with a cousin and good friend who lived there. Her self-education on the Holocaust through reading works on the bookshelves at home also helped shape her identity.

Perhaps if President Obama had been leading the seders, Rose's experience would have been more positive. It appears that the President knows how to engage a crowd, even around a seder table.

The message Rose received from her family and her community was that she was expected to succeed in secular life, but that advancement as an adult Jew was not an option. She recalls sitting at the foot of the very long Pesach seder table year after year, unable to hear anything but the mumbling of the older men at the head. The most she could have hoped for would be her eventual move to the middle of the table, to the women’s section, once she was a mother. She characterizes her Jewish upbringing and identity formation as overall positive. “I learned by osmosis by having been placed in my formative years in settings where I was surrounded by Jews.” But she adds, “The gender message remained problematic.”

By the time Rose was in late elementary school and high school, she was aware of the political situation in South Africa and that among those standing up against Apartheid were many Jews, most of whom were very secular and on the extreme left (In fact, a distant cousin on her father’s side was imprisoned on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela). Many of Roses’s teachers were Jewish and exposed their students to the situation more than was done in other schools. Roses’s classes took field trips and was twinned with a school in Soweto. Rose herself, when she was an older high school student and in college, was personally acquainted with fellow young Jews who were members of the National Union of Student Leaders fighting against Apartheid, some of whom were conscientious objectors against the military draft.

Nelson Mandela revisiting his cell at Robben Island in 1994

“You could not sit on the fence,” Rose says about Apartheid. “Either you were for it or against it.” Against it, Rose chose contribute to the cause through her profession. She studied at the University of Witswatersrand for two years and transferred to the University of Cape Town to finish her Bachelors degree in psychology and industrial sociology. Upon graduation, she went to work in industrial relations in the mining industry for five years in the mid-1980’s. Rose was a member of a team that worked as change agents at De Beers, making significant strides toward eliminating the culture of (white) managerial violence against (black) mine workers through the implementation and enforcement of newly developed policies.

A book of interviews with Jewish South African activists, edited by Rose's brother, Immanuel Suttner,

Proud of the impact she had made, Rose chose to leave South Africa with her fiance (now her husband) so that he could return to his native England to pursue an advanced degree. Although the couple left for personal-educational reasons, it is evident that the question of the quality of their future life in Apartheid South Africa was lurking in the background. Unbeknownst to them, secret talks that would lead to the dismantling of Apartheid were already underway as the two of them were packing up and departing for London.

Rose and her husband, who is not Jewish and has not converted, were married soon after they arrived in England. They remained in the UK for seven years, living in both England and Scotland, where Rose worked in human resources in the oil industry. Rose claims that although she was not associating herself with the Jewish community during those years, she “never lost touch with [her] internal Jewish clock.” When a holiday came around, it was if she had “an atavistic impulse to get off the merry-go-round to contemplate or celebrate.” In 1994, while living in Aberdeen which was devoid of Jews save for Rose, she suddenly had the desire to have a Pesach seder – just for her and her husband. So, she travelled all the way to Glasgow to buy the required pesadik supplies.

In 1996, Rose, her husband and their baby daughter left the UK to start the next chapter in their lives in California. Here, they had a second daughter, and both girls are receiving a solid Jewish education in day schools, synagogue programs, Jewish camps and youth groups. Her older daughter has already become bat mitzvah and her younger one is preparing for hers next year. The Jewish Community Center (JCC) nursery school in their town was the gateway to an active Jewish life involving not only education for the girls, but also plenty of adult Jewish educational programming and a variety of volunteer, philanthropic and lay leadership roles in the Bay Area Jewish community for Rose.

Madame A.F. Aude and her two daughters, 1899, Mary Cassatt

Rose always had the Jewish proclivity for analysis and debate, and she has applied this to her recent study of Jewish texts. She finds that her increased Jewish and Hebrew literacy has allowed her to really grow in her Judaism. Rose describes it as “a virtuous cycle. The increased literacy promotes increased engagement, which in turn leads me to yet more learning.”

Rose is very grateful to now live in a community where Jewish pluralism is celebrated. When she was a girl in South Africa, she had no inkling that the Jewish community could include anyone other than Lithuanian and Polish Jews. Similarly, she had not had the opportunity to establish close connections with people of different ethnic, religious and racial backgrounds until she went out into the challenging world of the mining industry to try to make a difference. It has been through her discovery of the other that she has been able to rediscover and re-imagine her Jewish self.

It is not uncommon for Jewish women of Rose’s generation to reconnect with their Judaism and the Jewish community through their children. It is an especially pointed experience for a woman who felt Jewishly disenfranchised as girl to be able to empower her daughters. Few women, however, have travelled as far as Rose has in order to come home.

The Firm – Reports were taken down after ‘legal threats’ from the Crown Office

Scottish Law Reporter carried the story of what happened at “The Firm” here : ‘The Firm’ censored, now apologise over Lord Advocate ‘allegations’ in Hollie Greig abuse scandal as Police investigate Aberdeen Paedophile ring along with their initial report on very disturbing allegations made by the victim, Hollie Greig and her mother Anne, to Grampian Police, which is covered, here : Down’s syndrome victim identifies Sheriff & Police in Aberdeen Paedophile ring as Grampian Police investigate claims of historical abuse

The Firm’s coverage, I cannot report .. but the verbatim reports as published, and now withdrawn apparently after intervention from the Crown Office itself, can be found online with a quick google search, or HERE. The ‘apology’ the Firm published, almost sounding like it was written under duress, is here : Lord Advocate “not involved, no connection, unaware” in decision not to prosecute paedophile ring 10 years ago

It is of course, in the public interest that any allegations of such a serious nature are fully investigated, and if found to be substantiated, anyone identified must feel the full weight of the law, and the considerable media attention which normally accompanies such scandals. However, is the public interest served by threatening the media into a silence of blacked out pages ? I think not.

Hollie is without doubt, due to no fault of her own, a vulnerable human being, and it is the duty of us all to care for those who are in such circumstances. If that care has failed, we have all failed, and those in office who are charged with protecting us from such failures, have failed the most.

Hollie is, as we have all tragically seen with headline after headline. not alone in being let down by a system designed to protect children & vulnerable adults from serious abuse, but one very serious consistency which always seems to come out of any inquiry into a case, be it abuse, or even a death from abuse such as the horrendous Baby P case in England … many of those who were responsible by job & position for protecting against such crimes, tend to escape any penalty for their administrative failures …

With regard to these failures, I think we all need to be reminded of the infamous, and equally horrendous “Miss X” abuse scandal from the Scottish Borders, where a vulnerable woman with learning disabilities was systematically raped & abused for years, until the media intervened, followed by Christine Grahame MSP, which eventually led to prosecutions & guilty verdicts on those who committed the crimes against Miss X.

However, the efforts to cover up Scottish Borders Council’s lack of action in the Miss X abuse scandal, were quite stunning at the time, with the same threats made from certain quarters to those who were publicising the case, and tales of reports & files being removed, in what many construed as a concerted effort to hide the truth. Eventually, ‘improvements’ were made to social care in the Scottish Borders, but, apart from the successful prosecutions, little in the way of heads rolled in official positions, for Miss X’s years of abuse, suffered just a few hundred yards away from the Council’s own headquarters in St Boswells.

Sources of media & reports from the Miss X investigation, along with statements to the Scottish Parliament by Scottish Government Ministers can be viewed here : Inquiry Reports & Media (Miss X Abuse Scandal Scottish Borders)

Aberdeen’s Press & Journal newspaper report that Grampian Police have re-interviewed Hollie & her mother, and are now investigating the case. Let us hope that along with a Police investigation, comes the necessary full inquiry to establish the facts of the case, why some feel that silence & censorship is applicable, rather than serving the interests of justice, and why it may very well be that as a nation we are still failing to protecting those among us who need our protection.
